Susan Howard (Bowman)

Thanks, Beau!  All of the above (or below) could apply to Duffy.  We moved, his Litter Maid is now in use (he was using the regular litter box for awhile), new litter, its possible there was a previous accident on the rug involving our dog, etc., etc., etc.  Plus we were out of town last weekend and the dog went but Duffy didn't.  Maybe he was PO'd at us!  Who knows!  You are so right when you say animals are hard to figure out!  Anyway, no surprises this morning - Yipee!

Ok, I’d like to say something before I start talking………..First of all, I (and many others I’m sure) sure appreciate the time and energy that Jackie, Barbara, Teddie, Beau, Johnny S, Scottie, Richard M, and numerous others that have contributed so much to the Waltrip64 cause which has resulted in very successful venues for re-connecting such as the reunions, web site, Fudd’s, WEBEC, etc. Through these connections, we have been able to catch up with each other, confirm our values, show off our families, pets, etc., solve global and domestic political problems and meet new friends, which is simply great.

However, I think I have noticed a decline in the number of Fudd’s attendees which may be attributed to the frequency (monthly) and since I don’t attend often, this has been confirmed by Jimmy Hilsher in my absence.   I’m concerned that it could feel like ‘work’ to some and at this stage in our lives, none of us want additional work!

Perhaps, if we met quarterly instead of monthly, more folks that don’t live close such as Paige, Leroy Greg, Tony M, Gary and Marilyn, Robert, Skeeter, Jimmy Stockton, Burgess, Jimmi Lee and Charles, Kay, Susan Howard Rose. and others (I apologize for those not mentioned) that are 50-150 miles away would attend more often. I will admit, this comment is strictly self serving as although I always enjoy talking with my old friends such as Beau, Teddie, Jimmy Hilsher, Lynn P, Dennis H, I would also enjoy seeing others when I do show up.

Therefore, I suggest we form a group of the movers/shakers to decide if this is indeed a good idea and, if decided, to meet less frequent, pick dates for same. So I open this proposal for comment and maybe a small group such as Teddie, Beau, Jackie, Jimmy Hilsher, Barbara or others might decide on Fudd’s dates for 2012.

Wayne, you raise some valid points. I definitely think there is room for some weekend at noon type get togethers like Johnnie and Wabec are doing and for some the weekend and no night time driving will probably be more attractive. The main idea of the Fudd's concept is a standing date, second Tuesday of every month, and place and time, so that no advanced notice, planning, rsvps, etc. were required but yet allow for out of towners if desired to plan their visits to Houston to coincide. I say let's hear from everybody on their preferences.

As for Fran and I we enjoy all of the get togethers and will make as many as possible. We are just so thankful to Jackie for coming up with this amazing website and for all of the work she does to maintain it, and for getting us all back in touch.

Teddie and Wayne

Wayne, you brought up some good points. ie I live about 50 miles away and attend when I can and would more if I lived closer. But I like what Teddie said about having the option more often. So, how about a compromise, a quaterly semi major get together, monthly casual, and for Johnnie an annual big one and then the 5 year blast. Yea!! Now let's hear from the scholars, Beau and RH. (Jackie, you have made all this possible and fun Thank you)

Well said Mr. Derrick!  I like the monthlys but I have no problem including other "special" get togethers like the one we had in College Station on Saturday.  The highlight was the announcement of Paige and Richard's engagement.

WAYNE???? THATS JUST CRAZY TALK MISTER...I'll get back to that after this message of cheer and good hope, sincere caring and emotional prosperity...

Yes, a laurel and Hardy handshake and good wishes to our own beloved young betrothed couple...(he went to Jareds)...I, being an ordained minister, performed the wedding macaroni at Abouels, or whatever in the heck name of that restaurant was, whilst we were breaking tacos together at the unscheduled scheduled meeting of the lodge of THE MYSTIC SEA AKA WABEC...

The princess bride to be, Paige, wore a lovely ensemble of clothes, and the handsome prince, Rich the LH was dressed also in an ensemble of...clothes...everyone was misty eyed with happiness for the lovely pair of...young and betrothed folks...

The happy couple plan to mooneyhoon...somewhere...congratulations mine beloved friends, and best wishes from the entire class of 64 and beyond...

I also perform bart mistas, not to be cornfused with bar mitzvahs...burials at see...christening of poltices...polkas...and slide rules...among other ministerial services...

NOW, back to the dissolution of FUDDZZZZZZZZZ...."nay hark spake mark" ...I think not mister...
Fudds is like Wabec, unstructured structure...orderly chaotic chaos... going to fuddzzz is not mandatory, is it???? If it were, I wouldnt go...it is however, and not speaking for anyone else, mandatory for my well being...I read what was written by one and all about changing the frequency of meetings at fudds, and decided to sleep on it before I let my feelings be known...so I did....

And here they are....

FUDDZZZZ IS WHAT I DREAMT ABOUT ALL NIGHT LONG...I kid you not...So, Fuddzzz must be very important to me...and it is...I so look forward to attending and seeing all the good folks that are the attendees...peoples faces, voices and names that I grew up with, that I spent the better part of 12 years with, folks that were really more family to me than mine own family, sometimes...most times...

Fudds isnt an official Waltrip function, however, being an ordained minister,  I can preside over the proceedings to make it one... I am not being flippant, but If one wishes only to attend 4 times a year, then by all means,  attend 4 times a year...no less will  they be thought of...in fact, they will probably mentioned a few times, and in a good light too....as was quoted by the person that suggested that we START a tradition like meeting at fudds,

"Having a reunion is a good thing, but even if it is every 5 years, things change quckly at our age, and we aint getting any younger, and you never know when one reunion, or 2nd tuesday at fudds just might be the last time we see one another"... Case in point, Jimmy Ira Brown...

If it were within my power, I would magically transport everyone to fudds, everyone that wanted to be there that is...no muss no fuss...then get em safely back home again...I know it's a long drive for most, and I fully understand maybe missing a gathering now and again...I have done just that, missed a gathering, due to pain and suffering, and then afterwards, regretted missing for ANY REASON...no matter how bad I felt...there's just something about the friendship of all you dear folks that I so crave and enjoy...like revisiting the past...I know, you can never go home again, and that is so true...but you CAN have fond memories, and ever now and again open that door to "home"...and at least peer in and talk to a few ghosts...

Like I said before, no harm in missing a fuddzzzz ever now and again, sometimes, things come up, children, grandchildren, medical, or you just dont want to make that drive etc...Now, no matter how bad I feel, my beloved pushes me out the door when 2nd Tuesday rolls around...and guess what, I feel so much better having seen those of you in attendance...forget my own problems for a couple O hours, major or minor as they may be...

As I stated, Fuddzzzz isnt mandatory for anyone, just for me...I view it as an opportunity rather than a pressured social chore...

Ya wanna know the funny thing when we get together???? I recognize everyone there...cept me when I go to the mens room and  look in the mirror....makes me feel like I dont really belong there....(not a fishing expedition)...what makes me feel like I belong???? All you good and gracious folks that attend our little gathering...even if it comes down to just two of us in attendance, and one is me???? Well, just look at the visiting we can do!!!!!!

I certainly cant speak for anyone else, and dont want to, nor do I want to come off sounding condescending, but if folks dont want to attend, for whatever reason, no harm no foul...I know that when folks are not there, that have attended before, they are always noted and missed...and sincerely wished well, because we all do truly care...and as the unscheduled WABEC meeting was moved, I imagine Fuddzzz can be moved hither and yon, to and fro...well not actually move FUDDRUCKERS, but at least the get together, eh what???

So without further adieu, I will bid you adieu...
Your frien and brother

DOD...Attila the hon ey...

 Paige and Richard:

Wow! Congrats, you two.

I forgot t include in my list of Fudd's benefits the possibility of re-connections ending in matrimony. And just think, we owe it all to Jackie and Teddie for putting it all together. Maybe we should meet at Fudd's more often instead of less often, let's say every Tuesday?

What a fun afternooon......I enjoyed the meal, and chatting with you all.  Would have liked to be able to roost around the table and chat individually a little bit more, and also chat with Richard and Paige about their plans, but so excited that we have a couple of Waltrippers that have decided to walk the matrimonial path.  Congratulations, couldn't see a more suited couple together!  Paige, if he will go to church with you, you have a great guy!

Scotty and Lois, nice to see a couple that will go places together, even out of town! Beau and Diane, glad you were able to make it....the afternoon was made so much brighter, being able to just see and chat, since it is difficult for me to get to Fudd's.  Which brings me to the ongoing discussions of Fudd's.  I can't say that I'm unhappy with the monthly date.  It is always a happy reminder that the Waltrippers are alive and connected and flouishing in Houston and, in my opinion keeps our daily shenanigans and conversation more current.  it is a little far for me to come and go in the evening.

Anyhoo, with Beau's help, we were able to open the meeting, toast to Mr. Jimmy Brown, toast to Richard and Paige and decide "nothing" except that all was "excellent"  and as it should be!

Tony Maddox.....you missed a good un!

Teddie Jordan

All I can figure is it must have been the recent re-reading of my all time favorite novel, movie and story, Lonesome Dove, but something triggered (pun intended) my long time yearning to own one more old saddle.

And it had to be an old working saddle, hopefully one used for years by cowboys working on a ranch, not a fancy one used for horse shows and parades. And it also had to be one made by the historic old San Antonio saddlery, Shirley Brown Saddles, who made and repaired saddles for many of the old south Texas ranches and their cowboys including the King Ranch. A good friend and hunting buddy of mine Mike Galvin's dad, Leonard Galvin, apprenticed as a saddlemaker for Mr. Shirley Brown, ended up owning the business and personally made most of their saddles, from about 1954 until he sold the shop in the early 90's. I knew Mr. Galvin and was fortunate enough to get to visit him in that shop once. I can still remember the smell of old leather, oil and saddle soap, and maybe a little horse hair and sweat, all mixed in the air. I wanted one of their old saddles that he had built.

And thanks to the marvel of the internet on which I would search about once a week, and some good luck, I found just such a saddle about 50 years old, well worn but with not a stitch out of place, and for sale cheap in Austin, and went and picked it up this past week. My desire was to have this old saddle just to look at in my upstairs office / man cave. Something from my childhood I guess.

Maybe it was childhood memories of my old horse and friend Buddy, who we kept on our weekend farm up at Iola in Grimes County and with whom I had many an adventure. The best horse a boy could ever own!

Or maybe it was the way I was drawn to the farm and ranch department at the old Sears store on Shepherd whenever our family would go there, which was frequently. I would go to that room and sit on one of the saddles on display and dream that I was Roy Rogers riding out onto the floor of the Colosseum in the Houston Rodeo, on Buddy. I have heard from other of our classmates who used to do the same thing at Sears, as discussed on page 48- 49 of this same forum 2 1/2 years ago.

Or maybe it was the week back in 1962 when I fulfilled a boyhood dream and was able to ride the Salt Grass Trail ride from Brenham to Houston with my dad. And that dream week culminated with the downtown rodeo parade and riding Buddy down the Mainstreet of Houston.

The thing is, I have no desire to own another horse. Been there, done that and besides I couldn't beat old Buddy anyway. No, I just want an old saddle to look at.

Must just be an old man thing.

Go figure!

WOW Teddie,
for an admitted two finger typist, you are remarkable...great story, and great saddle...I, like you, and others, use to go to sears and sit on the saddles they had displayed, and smell the wonderful smell of leather and neatsfoot oil etc...being able to handle the guns, when my dad was there of course,...looking at your picture, I can almost feel and smell the leather...I had a horse named Gingersnap...at least I think that was her name....even got some pictures of her, "round here someplace"...

I bought her from a mutual friend and boss of ours, Nelson...dont remember his last name, or that may have been his last name...he was assisstant manager of Mangum Supervalu...big guy...only paid 125 or 250 for her, saddle, bridle and blanket and all...she was half thoroughbred and half quarter horse...when she ran, it was the easiest gait I have ever experienced on a full out moving horse...what a wonderful gentle creature she was...had another horse named Buck...he was a "hoss", a hellacious pulling plow horse...if you werent paying attention whilst you were riding him, he would put you on the ground, and stand over you and laugh...

Some hunter shot and killed him...found him laying in the shallow end of my uncle pauls pond...never found out who the culprit was...I dont see how something so big could have been mistaken for a deer, and dont think it was...just someone wanting to kill something...first thing you and I and all guys learned about guns and hunting, "be sure of what you are shooting at"...if you are not sure, DONT SHOOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Wise words Del Gue, wise words"...

Like you though, I dont want another "hey burner" at least for me to take care of....I love looking at them, and the feel and smell of the tack though...

You sure have met some interesting and great folks along the way...

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

Hey Teddie, that's not an old man thing -- that's a beautiful saddle that brings back such warm and loving memories.  I think you got a super deal - beautiful saddle - beautiful memories.

Congrats to Richard and Paige -- there's nothing like LOVE!!!  Have you set a wedding date?

And Wayne, I understand your reasoning, but all in all over the last 3 years, we've had a pretty good turn out at Fudd's.  Probably this last gathering was the smallest - but that was mainly due to weather and elections.  So I'm still in for the monthly - a large or small group really doesn't matter - we always have fun and I'm like BroBeau, I always go away with a smile -- a night of being with my good friends and so many laughs!  And speaking of friends, Tony M, Jenny A, Doug R and Allen and Betty G  - where are you?  We miss you!

BroBeau, I knew you'd come up with some good advice for Susan -- you should know all!  And sorry about Gingersnap -- not a happy ending.

Looks like the WABEC had a good gathering, sorry I missed it.  Barbara and I and anyone else that would like to help, are working with Johnny Sheffield to get our group together on a Saturday at Clay's, hopefully in March.  More details will follow as soon as Johnny checks out Clay's and their schedule of events.

Happy Week to all!

Hugs,

J

Teddie, when we were in Houston last week, my brother gave me a magazine that celebrated Roy Rogers' 100th birthday.  I read a lot of facts I hadn't known about Dale & Roy and their modest beginnings.  Seeing the photo of your saddle brought that to mind.

As far as your Fudd's get-togethers go, we really enjoy seeing all the photos on the website the day after those events, so it doesn't matter to us how often you meet, just keep the photos coming.  Again, we thank Teddie & Fran for suggesting those get-togethers and thank Jackie for keeping all the communications going among all of us.

Congratulations Richard & Paige!

It sounds like everyone had a great time on Saturday!  I am with Jackie and just about everyone else - the more we can get together the better.  Those who can't make it enjoy hearing about the fun and laughs and seeing the pictures.  How exciting for Richard and Paige!  Congratulations you two!

tedddie, you can tell that saddle was well used but the sheen of wear makes it all the more beautiful.up here there are plenty of horses and one sees riders all the time;just the other day a neighbor had a mini riding event at his place around the corner.you did good with that saddle, hope you enjoy it for years to come.

p.s.

Good morning all. I guess it falls to me to say thanks for all your good and kind wishes. It's hard for Paige to do these kinds of things. As you know she is such a shy quiet little person. We really do thank you very much. Not much has been decided other than to get married and what church to use. The Church will be Oaks Presbyterian or as Beau refers to the Little Country Church in the City that is often talked about in this Forum. This was Paige's choice. After attending there a couple of Sundays she asked if it would be okay if we got married there. She likes thinks the church is very pretty and it has been a part of my family life since 1950 when we moved to Oak Forest. She asked me if they would allow us to since we're not members. I told I thought they would since my mom is considered one of the pillars of the church. Also since we know important people there like Diane Wann.

We are now discussing when to get married. I am lobbying for four years. (not getting much traction on that). Paige is lobbying for next year sometime. Where do you think you should put your money on this one?

When we made the announcement at a family get together. One of my uncles asked if we had decided where to live Houston or College Station? We replied that for a variety of reasons we would contine things as they are for a while. He replied. "Good it will probably make for a long, happy marriage".

When Paige introduced me to her Sunday School Class as her fiance' I was looking right at her Sunday Schoole teacher. A look flashed across his face like"whew that is one big problem solved". Got the same sort of look from her youngest son and daughter-in-law. Their looks were like "whew we're not going to have to build a cottage for Mom on the property". When she told her Bible study group, she told them we had agreed to live a frugal high maintenance lifestye. All the women giggled and laughed at that. After a few moments one of the men asked if that meant that Richard was going to live frugally and she was going to be high maintenace? Her response was "exactly". It's going to be a lot of fun. I still not sure when we agreed to that? I'm not sure if she realizes how deep my Scottish heritage goes.

Well as you can tell this process will provide lots of material for posting on the Forum. As to the discussions about frequency of meetings I think having as many as possible is the way to go with regularly scheduled ones and ocassional others. No one should feel obligated to attend anymore than they want to. Actually I was thinging we should start having a daily meeting. We can meet for breakfast every morning at Beau's place. How does that sound? Everyone can get to meet Big Oliver, Coop, Jack and the rest of the gang  personally. Beau can whoop up a mess of ole timey grits and all the other things not approved by the American Heart Association. That's the ticket. We can plot and scheme about just about anything.

Got to get back to my Capitalist endeavors.

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

Dance like no one is watching.

11/15/11 11:51 AM #4546

Paige Talley (Meek)

I will add my "Thank you" to Richard's. Being the submissive sweet shy problem solving woman I am, should be, going to be, could be, he thinks I am … maybe I'll get back to that another time.  ... this may be more fun than I suspected !!! Opps, lost my train of thought... oh well ---

Yes, the Big Boys are happy that the building plans can be put away. The back 40 will remain a wilderness. They even like Richard alot. The little kids have a completely different take on this new development... the girls are vying for flower girl and  Jacob is counting all the football and basketball games he'll get to go to. I won't pop those bubbles just yet. The bigger kids say things like "Sweeeet" and Way to go, Nana. Really I think they are busy trying to be grown-up and nesting on their own. Like most folks they each will quickly figure out their definition of  this loveable "Scotsman".

I do want to thank you all for your "joy" in our "joy". Family and friends are more valuable than gold. Ok, Richard, maybe not gold... how about as valuable as gold ??? Regardless of the commodity you choose, you are friends and truly of value.

Now where did I put that shopping list... caterers, designer, contractor, florist ... hmmmmm ... where is that list ??? RiiiiiiCHARD, do you remember where I put that shopping list ???

Love ya'll a bunch.

The Paige part of R&P

11/15/11 12:09 PM #4547

Richard Meek '65

I just hope I keep finding those lists so I can throw them away!. Particularly since she added a contractor and a designer to the list! It's best to put coffee grounds on top of them to make sure she won't retrieve them from the trash.

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

This will be as much fun as a barrel of monkeys, hardee har har!  Does R&P equate to "Rest in Peace?, well almost, may want to spell out the "and"....we are all too close to the other!

Richard, don't wait too long, or it may never happen!  Four yrs....come on!  The thing with men is ya'll don't want to live life alone, want that TLC that comes with us women...I know a little about it, and compromises ....hmmm.  We, on the other hand want that bond as well and a little of what comes along with it!  Just decide how the finances will be done and, viola, the marriage is on!  The fact that you both know the righteousness of the 10 Commandments shows that you are aware you are on the right tract.  Paige, how about your church here in Bryan?

Annnnyyywwwaaayy!

Paige and Richard, Fran and I got married in that same church by our old friend Rev. Hudson McNair almost 46 years ago and it took for us. We are excited for you.

Beau Wann, Jr.

THERRRRRRRRRRES JOHNNY....Yea!!!! Good to hear from you, keep it up. If you win big out in Vegas, you gonna take us all to supper???? they named the Beau Rivage after me, of course!!!
Good luck on the gambling...first time I was out there a few years back, I was in shock. Slot machines in the airport. Noise and lights 24/7....I even saw me a couple o them, er, uh, working girls...young pretty ones too...they were coming up the escalator as I was going down...they smiled and waved and giggled like they wanted to have their way with me...I just said howdy, and got lost in the noise and lights...I could not wait to get out of there and back to my little grass shack in North Zulch, Tx...

Hey Paige, I can cater...or find a catererererer for you...just happen to know a couple O good ones...they will give me a great rate. What yall want for reception??? you gonna have it at the little country church in the city???? I can get the church for you for free...our wedding gift to you. Plus the reception hall. It's kinda plain, but can be dressed up...Diane and I got married there back in 84. We had so much fun, we didnt want to leave. But folks at reception wanted to go home, so they shoved us out the door about 10 pm. Plus we had to get to our first B&B in Weimar before midnight, cause they locked the doors and that was that. We made it at 11:45.

Lessee, hmmmm, what kinda food would you like at the reception???? GRITS???? Hmmm Lessee, theys frahed grits, regular grits, shrimp grits, cheese grits, garlic cheese grits...just call me Bubba gump...the onliest problem if you have the reception at the church, is no alcohol. That wasnt a problem for DW and I, we are not big drinkers. Love that ice tea though, made with pure d ol sprang water...

Well, you study on that there...Also, there's the Lederkranz Hall, at pinemont and Ella. They have a bar, and can probably set up for a reception. Dont know what their rates are, but Dianes class of 72 had a reunion there sometime back. I'd say have the reception at our house, but it's a dump. I mean, we have so much furniture, and just about border on being hoarders. Well, maybe not that bad, but we just have too much crap. Most of the furniture is "handmedowns heirlooms" from her grandmother and aunts...It would be nice to get rid of about half of all this stuff...

Maybe we can find a young couple just starting out in life that needs some stuff...hey, you and rich are just now starting out....saaaaaayyyyyy, there's a idear...I will have the 18 wheeler backed up to Rich the LHs driveway in the morn...yeah, thats the ticket...Oh Riiicccchhhhh, got our wedding present s just waiting to deliver...

Yeah, and we can meet here everyday for breakfast...I love cooking breakfast, and eating it...WHAT THE HECK DO YOU MEAN, THAT GRITS AINT GOOD FOR YOU????? IT'S JUST CORN....HEAVENS TO BETSY MAN, WHERE'S YOUR MIND AT THESE DAYS???? Paige???? Yeah, I thought it might be something like that...you lucky fellow you...looks like youre in luck in the grits department also too...I have about 50 pounds of the wonderful stuff, and thats gonna be your wedding present...and maybe a couple of cats to sweeten the deal...you cant have Cooper or Jack though, although if you let them come to the wedding, they can be the official watch dogs.
And you know how feeeerocious them ol boys are...yup, they are so bad I call em Smith and Wesson...

We could have us a ol fashion shiveree too...well, maybe not like they had in the bad ol days, cause I got to be in bed by 9...or was it 10??? Maybe in bed, but not sleepin...hells bells, sleepins for sissys...wouldnt mind being a sissy just once, get about 12 hours of straight uninterupted sleepful bliss...but I guess them days aint gonna happen...and I aint gonna worry about it because, when I shuffle off this mortal coil, I will have plenty of time to sleep, right???

When DW and I got married, they throwed so much rice on us, and filled the suitcases with the stuff, we are still finding it ever now and again...When we got up from our first night on our mooney hoon, and packed to go, the bed and room had rice all over the place...we had breakfast at the inn there, and when we settled the bill at the front desk, they wanted extra to clean up all the rice...I told em to go to heck, they OWED US for all that rice...When we went back through Weimar some weeks later, they had rice on the menu at every meal...imagine that! ! ! ! ! ! !

Hey Teddie, wasnt Nelsons last name Mac something????? Also too, there was Marion Kubezka another asst mgr...his brother lived across the street from us on Costa Rica and De Milo...And Marion lived on Costa Rica and Viking...Both are deceased now...dont know what happened to Nelson, or the Draper brothers, or charles and jerry faigle, and Mickey Faison, remember him...His dad was a pro boxer...

Paige, I can supply the music also...Polkas, and other fancy stuff...

Hey Lynn P, the only two songs I dont have, are the two that you requested...but I'm gonna get them...one was done by Faron Young and the other was, dang, now I forgot...not to worry though, I am gonna find em...

Well, I can see by the old clock on the wall, that...it's stopped...oh well, it's not like I'm on any kind of a schedule...just waitin for daylight...never did like the night, couldnt see...now I really cant see...so now, I really dont like the night...good thing I got my guide dogs...they can guide me right to the food, for a small fee of course...

Ok, time to go...wish it was to sleep, but alas and alack...dont know what that means, but I read it once in one of Billy Shakesperes stories...did he invent the fishing reel???? I think he did, cause there's one with his name on it...

ive been re-reading some of the old messages and comments on the forum.it makes me really proud to have been part of oak forest and and the kids who went to black and waltrip,we were part of a time in history that reflected the very good of america.people were honest to the most extent and the fact that our community was safe enough to leave our doors unlocked and our hearts open to strangers among us shows a positive aspect to a generation that was full of good intentions and trust.i hope that some emperical results will come out of the analasis of the last 75 years that can inform our future direction;all is not lost from the american character.we need to discount the failed theories of materialism and regain what ethics worked to make us the very best society ever seen in all of history.be hopeful if not enthuseastic;i reject the notion of hegel and his disciples that human nature is inherently bad and people must be compelled by force or threat.oak forest was an example of the opposite.

Hey Beau, this things kinda quiet right now and I just realized that somewhere between weddings and grits you asked me about some of the names of our old bosses and co-workers from the grocery store days.

Nelson's last name is Mackenroth. He was as you described him a big ol' hard working German boy with a passion for horses and the ranch life, but trapped then in the city. I kept my  horse Buddy in a pasture he had rented out on Hempstead highway during high school . Fran and I used to go out there and ride him after school. Years later I saw Nelson at the livestock auction in Navasota and he and I were both waitng on some calves to sell and ring the cash register. Nelson was one of my groomsmen when Fran and I got married.

Gary Draper was a nice guy and ended up marrying Nelson's younger sister. I can picture her, a pretty and sweet girl, but can't recall her name. I remember Marion's name but can't put a face on him. What was the name of the great guy who worked the courtesy booth at night and on Saturdays as a second job and had about 8 kids? I want to say Floyd. What was the name of the man who worked the back door? He went by initials I think. Jerry Faigle became a coach and then a principal in the Waller school district. I last saw Nelson and his sister and Gary and Jerry  at Danny Dolejsi's son's funeral about 15 years ago.

A great group of people with good work ethics, and good role models  for us teenagers. Jimmy Stockton worked with us there too.
