Appointment after appointment… doctors’ appointments is how I spent the latter part of my week last week. During my last post I spoke to having to look into clinical trials. On Wednesday my mom and I met with the head doctor of the Clinical Trials Department at Oncology Consultants. What an awesome man! He walked in the room and told me he wanted to get to know me and that he was going to ask me 1,000 questions. He listened and asked questions as I rattled off what has been my life for the past 13 months.  He was extremely honest with us on treatment options and how a lot of those options are driven by money (this is more than likely the reason why my proposed chemo regimen was not considered.)  Our meeting ended with a homework assignment, I know I am the teacher here, but he was the one who gave me homework. My homework was to make a timeline that detailed all my past doctors, treatments, and medications and to also gather copies of my past ct/pet scans. This homework submission would help him to better understand my case and come up with the best treatment plan possible, whether that be a clinical trial or traditional medicine.

After this appointment I was sent for an immediate ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys, because the urgency and pressure I had been experiencing over the past week had not let up. I had a bit of a scare on Tuesday when I didn’t tinkle for close to 24 hours. Thursday morning I had an appointment with an Urologist who I was hoping could provide me with some answers, but instead left me with taking another pill (a pill that is given to males 99% of the time.)  My mom being the good mom that she is decided to read me a few of the side effects as a precaution (too embarrassed to mention, but you can use your imagination on side effects men might have.) Well luckily I didn’t experience “those” side effects, but I did wake up Friday morning to horrible stomach cramps, shakes, and sweats. I was incapacitated on the pot for what seemed like forever as the thought of Elvis’ final minutes spent in this very same position crossed my mind.

Unfortunately, I was too ill to attend our scheduled appointment with Dr. Comacho (clinical trial doctor) on Friday morning. Luckily for me my mom and dad were able to attend in my place. After a couple of hours of reviewing past scans and talking about treatment options, a Phase II clinical trial was decided upon. This trial has shown promising results in metastatic cervical cancer cases. Dr. Camacho understands my urgency in wanting to get back on treatment ASAP, so this week he will present this treatment plan to his committee and my insurance for approval.  From what I have read and gathered from my parents this treatment will be once every 28 days and will probably be the “harshest” treatment I have received so far. Fingers and toes crossed we should have the green light to begin treatment at the end of this week.
Happy belated Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful moms out there! I found this quote from George Washington online that just goes to prove that a child’s love for their mother is a feeling that has been around for centuries and will continue for centuries to come. "My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her."-- George Washington (1732-1799) He says it so perfectly, and I don’t know that I can match that, but I will give it a shot by putting it simply…Thank you mom for all that you are. You have been my pillar of strength during the trying times and my buddy to laugh and smile with during the good times. Your undying faith and positivity are contagious not only to me but to all who know you. I consider myself so lucky to be able to call you “MOM!”
Faith Creates Miracles,
Lindsey

With all the serious things going on we can't ignore our responsibilities fellow Waltripians. Upcoming on May 18th is the next irregularly scheduled meeting of the Whirld Affairs and Burger Evaluation Committee (WABEC). That day was selected because it is Waltrip Day at all the Hickory Hollow Bar-B-Que restaurants. We will meet at the location at 101 Heights Blvd. That is very close to Washington. We are going to that location because the manager is a Waltrip alumnus and will give us twice the contribution to the Alumni Association of the other locations. If you can't make the meeting but can stop by a Hickory Hollow location just tell the cashier that your from Waltrip and a percentage of your check will be contributed to the Waltrip Alumni Association. So come on out to the WABEC meeting. You'll be glad you did, good food, good friends (new & old) and good conversation. There's no agenda and no program. Just have fun. All are invited!!!! Come to Hickory Hollow Restaurant, 101 Heights Blvd.,at 11:45 on Wednesday, May 18th. Have a great lunch and take a large to go order for dinner that evening. The Alumni Association benefits from your purchases!!!!!!

Ferrell and I are moved into our new home! The house is lots bigger and the yard is 1/2 acre wildflower meadow. Nice, I think, if I can keep it natural without having to get a riding mower. think I'll try to just mow 3 or 4 times a year so I can encourage the flowers.Deer, coyotes and a skunk have come by to welcome us to the neighborhood. The skunk is not too happy cause we are too close and too noisy. He/she is living under my workshop. hopefully, PePe le pew will limit his visit to times I am asleep. One night the coyotes started a ruckus and I ran out there to chase them away. What a bunch of noise! Downside is we are a few miles from the grandkids rather than a few blocks. But they seem to like the place too. Lots of gusty wind here more than I remember from the other place. I hope the work slows down again soon... my back is sore! Here is apicture of the beautiful oak in the back yard.

 OMGosh I love ya'll !!!!!!!

I truly do not know how I could cope without knowing that my friends were there for me. I do hope you know that I am here for you, too. This forum is like life's blood more often than not. Thank you, Jackie, for all you and the other “background” folks do for us.

Prayer matters and it certainly has mattered with Mom (ok and me too). This morning she is alert, talking and conversing coherently. Being a feisty female, she was sitting on the side of the bed this morning trying to get up, get dressed to go to breakfast. They happened to get to her before she made it all the way up. (Yes, they were supposed to put a “bed alarm” but didn’t get it done last night… “they” didn’t think she could move herself…) I WARNED THEM !!!

It is a consistent vigil and your prayers are coveted. So when Waltripians and/or extended family cross your mind… Pray. It matters.

Not that it is funny, but little children, pets and death often give us pause. Last evening Marianne (6) was playing with "Mini", a very tiny miniature gerbil. Mini has been friendly, allowing the children to mess with her, dress her up and yes, even put her in a box when she was bad (that is another story). Well, yesterday Marianne was playing with Mini and as animals will often do, Mini nibbled a little aggressively on Marianne's finger. The natural reaction, of course, was to let go of Mini. Yes, Mini had a "heart attack" brought on surely by a concussion. Mini had passed on. I arrived on the scene shortly after the incident. The children were gathered around the tiny bundle of fur,  laid out for the funeral on a soft white cloth.

The Mini funeral has been postponed until Saturday when Daddy Walt returns from out of town. In the mean time, Mini is shroud in confetti tissue paper sealed in a "Glad" storage container, tucked in the morgue (freezer in the pantry) awaiting final internment.

Otherwise… there is no otherwise right now…

Lloyd, my dad loved trees. He used to take movies of them - bottom to top and down again. He knew the names of them all and could identify them by the leaves (even if off the tree). He and I once selected my "leaf collection" for school on a trip through east Texas. What a great memory! Seeing your beautiful tree is a delight. P

Hugs to all,

Paige

Good morning Waltripians.

Lloyd in case you do have an unfortunate encounter with Pepe' I understand tht tomato juice will do the trick of removing the smell. I've never had reason to try it so I haven't personally vetted the remedy. So far, so good. Hey that really is a great tree. With judicious use you should get several years of firewood out of it, lol. Since you are the guitar repairman I have a question for you. I saw a picture of Willie Nelson recently and the hole in his Martin seems to be larger than i remember. Does that hole effect the sound and tone of a guitar? Or does that come from the back of the instrument?

Here is a little basball trivia  for you. Ty Cobb holds the record for the most seasons batting .300 or better. He did that for 23 years ,pretty amazing. Second Place goes to Tris Speaker. He only did for 18 years. Which is no small feat in itself.

DOD, where are you boy? I know that Lucifer the cat didn't get you because you were at Fudd's Tuesday night. That was a good turnout and a fun evening as usual. We missed those of you who weren't there. Make plans to come out next month!

Keep on dancing,

Sorry we missed Fudd's this month, Fran's mom had a medical procedure that afternoon. But it sounds like another good time and as I told Scotty, everyone has heard enough of my BS anyway.

I've used the tomato juice bath treatment on a couple of my hunting dogs through the years after skunk encounters. It helps, but it's not full proof. Poor ol' dogs almost always lead with their powerfull noses and usually get a good shot right in the face. The spray is yellowish in color and it messes them up pretty bad right at first. I've had some close calls myself. And Lloyd, skunks are notorious carriers of rabies so if you ever see one acting strange, especially if it is during the day light hours, either kill it or steer clear and protect your pets, pipes and children.

HEY Theo...we will let you know when we are tired of you, dont think thats gonna happen though ! ! ! ! !  I'd be willing to bet, almost everyone there mentioned you and Fran, and Paige and all the regulars that were AWOL...Group seems to be dwindling somewhat...It's not like any of youse have anything else to do, or a long way to drive...eh what??? We were glad to see everyone...

Lloyd, FINE LOOKING TREE FOR SURE...I like trees very much...anytime there is a tornado or high wind, and they show HUGE oaks and others laying on their side, ripped out of the ground, I hate it...all the trees that were lost in ike and other such storms...cant have enough trees to my way of thinking...we started with about 15 trees and the wisteria from hell, when we moved in some 15 years ago, and we are down to one small tree in the cement pond area, and two trees in the front...just kills my soul to lose a tree...lost 3 pines in the front, two jap ewes, and one super fine red maple...lost all in back but one althea...oh well...

WHAT A RIPOFF !!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGEMENT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE HAVE HARDLY GOTTEN ANY RAIN AT ALL...GRASS IS WET, BUT GROUND IS DRY...STREET HARDLY WET...chances of rain dont come any higher than what we had, and still no rain to speak of...boooooooooooooooo hisssssssssssssss...I even rode my bike yesterday to Hempstead in the dark clouds, and got a drop or two...whats a guy got to do to get rain around this dump...jeeze loueeze...I want a recount...

I thought for sure all "hail" was gonna break loose, because every critter we have has been clinging to me like velcro...moving from room to room, got a dog on each side, touching my legs, and both looking around for "bears"...cats all in front of us in a "pride"...never seen that before...Maybe we gonna get stomped on later from this "non-storm storm"...In front of the puter, and got big Oliver in my lap, lacy on the left arm and peaches on the right arm of the chair, katy is drapped over my arms trying to get closer...and annie-bob on the back of the chair and my neck...Sammy is on my feet, every now and again, letting me know he is there by stabbing me with his built in switchblades...Jackie and Cooper are on the couch, looking at me, and at the door...these ol boys are freakin me out...

I guess if I'd gone up to the estate in the hamptons, to get some woik done, we might a got a drop or two...according to the lyin radar, looks like all "hail" is done broke loost,(east texas for "looks like all "hail"s done broke loost") Did see a mama duck and her babies floatin along cole crick, out on dawn patrol...lots o turtles and pond scum...

Paige, hope your mom recovers fully and quickly...and you too...and Frans Mom too...and anyone elses mom...Sent flawrs to my mom for "moms day", think it was 110 roses of all size and colors...she says they are pretty, but having macular degeneration, she has to look at things with her peripheral vision...nothing too good for "moms", especially after they put up with us for so many years...speaking of which, saw Mr and Mrs Theissen at the little country church in the city, last sunday...talking to them, is like stepping back into time, when we were hanging around their house as youngsters...they are soooooo nice....only had 25 of the usual suspects last sunday, and that was counting the choir and bell choir, and minister and organist and the couple walking their dogs past the church...I hollared a "halaluja" and a "praise the lord" at em, so it was ok to count em as part of the worship service...

Ok, got to get up...being smothered by cats, and burning up...plus the little woman should be getting home some time soon...gotta start supper...would you believe, I washed and dryed 3 loads of clothes, folded and put them away, vaccuummmed, washed dishes and put them away, cleaned out all litter boxes several times, rearranged some of the furniture, dusted, and now gotta get supper..."cause I'm a WOMAN, W-O-M-A-N...." our moms, and all youse moms out there now, have been doing that since Adam and Eve and the snake messed up Eden...and now you grandmoms, still doing all that stuff...

so, keep the sun at your six, and ride boldly ride...

Paige Talley (Meek)

Greetings from the North-ish country. Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers for Mom. She is physically recovering nicely. Walking well (with the walker of course) and this morning put the walker aside and went to holding on to the furniture like before. I asked her nicely -

DON'T DO THAT, MOM - and she immediately acquiesced to my wishes... NOT !!!

Her mind is not catching on so quickly. The dementia and/or confusion is bad. After a year of getting her acclimated to being in College Station, she is back to the day we arrived her 10 months ago.

Then... we lost a child Saturday evening. Madeleine (10) went missing in the early evening Saturday. Long and short... the police were finally called and the search was on in earnest. Walt and Daphanie had searched the house, yard, pool, neighborhood and friends (well they didn't search the friends but did contact them). No Madeleine. Finally she was discovered in the side yard asleep. Terror was replaced with knee weakening relief. The technology in our present world is often frowned upon, but this day Prayer was passed around in a flash. So fast, in fact, that within minutes of the prayer request being sent to my Home Group, it went through the church prayer line and Walt got a text requesting prayer for his own lost little girl. He said the comfort in that message was overwhelming. Not long after, Madeleine was found. Prayer Matters!!!

I am hoping to see ya'll at Fudd's on June 14th.  I want a good visit and see laughing, smiling faces.

Burge, I love the white horse... Where's the "knight in shining amour" ???

Lloyd, I thought of you and your new digs this Sunday. There are some butterfly attracting plants at Mom's home. She and I were taking a "walk -n- woll" trek around the complex and stoped to look at the flowers. All of a suddent the whole bush fluttered. It was engulfed in butterflies. Almost made me want to plant something...lol.

Ya'll brighten my day so keep those stories, cards and letters coming... the forum needs you.

Paige

Good afternoon Waltripians.

Burge all I can say is Amen brother!

I had a refreshing experience this morning. My washing machine had broken last Thursday. I called an independent appliance repairman that had been referred to me. He said I can't come tomorrow because my daugther is graduating from A&M but I'll be there between 8 & 9 on Monday. Which was cool with me. He calls at 7:10 this morning . Says I can come right now if you want me to. I say sure come on. He's there in 10 minutes. I show him the wahser and tell him whats it's not doing. He listens to it. Says he knows what it is. he starts disassembling the machine. Replaces the broken part. reassembles the machine. I pay his bill  and he leaves at 10 til 8 saying he thinks he can get his next customer's drier working before she has to leave for work. Wow, what a great way to start the week! I hope your week got off to an equally good start!

For the motorcyclist on the Forum check this out http://ridemission.com./motorcycles/

This is an electric racing motorcycle. One of our vendors produces the power plant.

I am returning from the land of "no sleep" to the world of "some sleep". I look forward to "restful sleep" in the near future. In the meantime, nothing catastrophic has happened in the last hour.

I, too, enjoyed the "Moon in All It's Splendor..." for the last couple of nights. Recently, before the more recent events of fractures and lost children, things around family, pets and stuff seemed to be a little tilted to the dark-ish of sides. I referenced the moon as being a "Crooked Moon" as an explanation of strange events. Of course that brought a mess of questions and a mini-science lesson (of sorts) i.e. tugging tides. Anyway, last night's moon was mentioned and in child like logic..."I guess the moon got un-crooked". Gotta love those little ones.

Paige, glad youre ok, and your Mom too, and they found the lost little girl...whew, that musta been a nail biter for sure...I am sure, WE ALL wish nothing but the very best for you and your mom and everyone out there too also...my mom called and wished me a happy birthday!!!!! In May!!!! I tried ever so gently to say she was a month early, which shocked her, and me too...My mom knows/knew everyones birthday in the family...hmmm...dont like this old stuff too much...of course, it beats the alternative...

Paige that bike, is a little toooooo modern for this old throwback...speaking of which, my steed, black that it is, is to me as beautiful as burges white horse...I love horses...oh yeah sure, I love most critters, cept maybe grizzly bears, lions and tigers, at least on the loose...sometimes when we take I-45 north to the highcountry, we see what must seem like thousands of horses, especially at the prison on both sides of the road...I understand they have an inmate/horse program...well duh!!!! sawr lots of colts this spring...

MOON???? what moon???? NAH, I saw that bad boy, and from up in the rarified air of the high country...had the coyotes howling a blue streak...and that of course got "White Fang", and "Huckleberry hound" a howlin...they were weirdin me out with all that noise..."SHUT UP BOYS, THEM COYOTES DONT NEED ANY HELP",I hollared....twernt no use, so I joined right in with em...pretty soon the boys got tired or bored, as did I...of course I bribed em with some of their favorite treats...and bribed me with some tennesee sippin whiskey and a good cigar...

I am watching National Velvet, with Elizabeth Taylor...I'll swear, she is the spittin image of my next door neighbor Lucy...WOW...lots of horse action in that yarn for sure...I'm not a big fan of horse racing, and or steeple chase races...looks mighty hard on the horses...dont like critters getting hurt for stupid human games...but I do like to see horses run in the pasture...we have donkeys running in ours...Ms Perrys herd got loose and came over to eat our grass and corn...I guess our fare is better than where they came from...they are an ornery lot...none of them would talk to me, like Leon Hales mule...guess they were not impressed with my title, "Duke Of DuBarry"...

But one huge white donkey, as big as a mule, did seem to take a shine to me...he kept pushing me with his nose when I'd turn my back...then when I'd turn around to scold him for assaulting me, he would look aside, like he was saying, "who me"???? He came over to camp, and stood chewing his cud, whilst me and Cat Jack sat in the swing...so I talked to him, and to Cat Jack...you know, just cordial stuff, "hows your family", "pretty day isnt it" and "wow look at that moon", you know the usual small talk...ever now and again ol Cat Jack and the Donkey, havent given him a name yet, would bay and bark at the same time...methinks they were mocking me...oh well I've been mocked by better and worse before...

Yup, gonna ride My trusty steed, Pegasus, to the Whirld affairs and burger evaluatin meeting at Hickory Hollow tomorrow...been riding everyday...I would go crazy if I didnt have Pegasus...
Alll youse youtes that need to renew your Drivers License, GOOD LUCK, if you go to one in the Bayou City...IT IS HORRIBLE AT BEST, OMG, what a nightmare at the dacoma one and the one on Grant road...screaming babies, seating section for 100, full, plus any line is long and does not move...and if you should happen to get to the people at the first desk in the first line, they have  such an arrogant attitude...and to think we pay these people with our tax dollars...

After waiting in the line for 30 minutes, in which time it did not move, and screamin brats did not shut up, I decided to ride Pegasus to Hempstead DPS and renew...took only 45 minutes, in an office about the size of my motorcycle...BUT, I hear tell, from the people at Hempstead DPS, that Brenham has a much better one, only takes 5 minutes, and also Rosenberg is suppose to be good too...I did renew the tags on my lowboy trailer at rosenberg, and only took 5 minutes or less, and cost 6 dollars...So my adivce, if you can, go to a smaller town that has a DPS office and licensing section...

Guess me and Cat Jack will go out and sit on the swing and gaze at the moon...if he starts howlin, I'm gonna throw him in the drink...hope to see more folks than just me at the WABEC at HH tomorrow, be good food and good company...guess I could talk to Pegasus if no one shows up...at least he talks to me when we ride...and oh how he purrs...

Goodnight mine waltripians...ride boldly ride...

Troy Holiman

A word about answered prayer. My 92 year old mom was released from the doctor after 6 weeks with a broken hip. She is using a walker and sometimes we can get her to use a cane. We are praying that in the next 3 weeks she will be walking unaided.

05/18/11 12:30 PM #3975

Paige Talley (Meek)

Troy, isn't it amazing the wonderful way they can restore the physical body with nuts, bolts, screws, rods and balls.  I am so glad your Mom is recovering well.

Mom is two weeks today since she fell and broke her hip. Saturday will be two weeks from surgery. She is walking better than before the fall with no limp at all, although she is weak and must hold on. She is supposed to be using a walker and may graduate to her cane in about six weeks (the prediction). She is also supposed to have someone with her to assist in standing and protecting her when walking. Supposed to is the operative here. She uses the walker when someone is there to make her and she gets up by herself because she can't remember that she is not supposed to.  Basicly her dememtia tells her that she can do what she wants. It is making me a nervous wreck because although bed and chair alarms are in place and are set off when she gets up, often no one comes to check why the alarms are going off. The State of Texas declares that everyone has the "Right to Fall" and restraint may not be used to keep them from falling. No bedrails, not straps to keep them from falling out of a chair. Attention to a fall is after the fall not to prevent the fall.

I think this is so upsetting is that it is not only the condition that I find my Mother facing, it is as though through the looking glass I see my own future. Makes me wonder if my "cape" will continue to be trustworthy. I am certain this is just a little wobble and my cape will return to full flutter in no time. Mom's cape seems to fit her just fine... she thinks she can and therefore, of course she can!!!

Well, whatever happens, we can only do the best we can do for our aging parents and selves...It's one thing for sure, no one gets off this earth alive...well, except for the astronauts of course...another bit of health news, is that 6 cups of coffee aday, and coffee in general, will keep guys from getting prostate cancer, and women from breast cancer, or a large percentage thereof...I dont have a problem drinking coffee, love the stuff...

OMG...I JUST FOUND OUT, THE WHIRLD COMES TO AN END THIS SATURDAY, MAY 21 AT 6 PM...wonder which time zone...6 pm is after happy hour starts, so most folks wont care, or notice, and thats a good thing I suppose...I dont see how I can cope with the ending, because I still have to mow the yard, and I have a couple of loads of clothes to wash, got a deck to finish, and a plethora of other projects to get to...just dont see how the whirld can end, with all this unfinished work...

Just back from the WABEC meeting at Hickory Hollow, and the concensus was that we were just gonna have to put off the ending of the whirld, because of all the whirlds unsolved problems...gonna take us at least a plethora of meetings to just sort out which whirld problem to start solving first...took a vote and motion carried that ending would be postponed...speaking of which, only 5 concerned waltrip citizens showed up for the meeting...5 brilliant minds I might add...HH probably collected about 5 whole dollars for the alumni fund...yes sir, money just a rollin in...

I think I'm the onliest one that had a burger...it was ok, barely....O rings were ok...they're really known for chicken fried steak, which is second to none...well, why didnt I have the CF steak instead of the so so burger???? well sir and ma'am, ah caint eat a whole CF steak by my lonesome...and since I was on my bike, couldnt take a to-go bucket, so I opted for a CB and O rangs...thas whuh!!!!! Next time howsomever thangs are a gonna be different...CFS...

Moon was beautiful again last night...as per usual...me and Cat Jack fell asleep in the swing  about 11:30, just after that ol moon showed its face up over the tree tops and winked at us...woke up about 2:30, man in the moon high in the night sky...didnt know where I was, or why...but it all came back to me directly...so me an ol sleepy head Cat Jack trundled off to our respective sleeping spots in the main house...speaking of sleep, methinks it's nap time...

Beau,  Just as you observed, it was a beautiful full moon last nite. As you may know we live in the woods outside Navasota, and have had an armadillo visiting our yard for many nights and just digging huge holes looking for worms. Kay finally got tired of filling up the holes and trying to get the grass restarted and camped out on the patio last night under that full moon. Sure enough, about 11:00 she came in and woke me up and said "I see him!!!!". Well, one 12 guage and #4 shot later, we were rid of our distructive critter. For the animal rights folks, we gave it a decent burial. We enjoy living with nature out here, but have to manage our own enviroment.
