WOW, SWELL RESPONSE AND PICTURES ABOVE...what I really wanted to say, was that Jackie figured out why I was having problems putting pictures on the forum...18megapixels and HD is why...
the old pics like the ones above of the tomb of the unknown soldier, went on in less than a nanosecond, and those photos were from my old film nikon cameras...hmmmm...I can adjust the quality of the pics on my new canon, so they should go on faster...maybe...

yes, burger and fries next wednesday...and whirld problem solving, of course...wouldnt be anykind of a meeting at all if we didnt cuss and discuss things...eh what???

I should have though of lavender on-line... silly me! I do kinda like getting the directions the old-er fashion way... ask someone that actually can give you wrong directions that will eventually get you where you want to go... most likely by an adventuresome route. I am not one that necessarily prefers purple above other colors, but lavender is supposed to help one sleep deeply. (Does that mean one must sleep in a hole?)  Anyway, I tried sleeping in the color lavender... it didn't work at all... I was just as shallow as before I went to sleep. Beau, perhaps you could try sleeping in lavender.

I am sure that ya'll will have great success solving the whirld problems at the Burger Joint. Do ya'll all talk at once? I have visions of everyone talking and eating and doing other boy things all at once... it is not a pretty thought.  Solve on...

Fellow Waldripians, wherever you are tonight in North America, if you haven't already done so, do yourself a favor and go outside and check out the beautiful full moon. It is spectacular. In Houston we have scattered low clouds, but when the moon is allowed to show it is sweet.

There is also a hint of Spring in the air, or maybe it's just my imagination. I was in South Texas earlier this week and on Tuesday, while out walking, I had a close encounter with a mature Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, a five footer, as big around as my forearm with a head as big as my fist. A truly dramatic and beautiful creature. For safety purposes, especially that of my canine buddy, I feel that I must dispatch those that I encounter on our place, and this one suffered acute lead poisoning. But it is as sure a sign of the approach of Spring as any, from an animal that hibernates in winter.

Teddie,

We had no clouds last evening and the full moon was beautiful.  We have 1/2 moon windows across the top of all the rooms on the back of our house, so the moon was visible from one of those windows all night as it moved across the sky.

We're driving down to The Woodlands tomorrow and weather looks to be the same as up here - back in the 70s again.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Good morning to all fellow Waltripians, looks like we should have a lovely weather weekend. Be sure and make the rest of it equal or better!

Ted, I don't think your departed reptile will be missed, particularly in South Texas. Do you take those dispatched ones home and fry them up for appetizers? The moon really was magnificent last night. Got a good look at it as Liz and I were taking our nightly hike. Of course the full moon makes the crazies drive crazier on the freeways.

For those who are interested don't forget that the Whirld Affairs & burger Evaluation Committee meets next Wednesday, the 23rd, 11:45; five Guys Burgers & Fries; N. shepherd @ Loop 610. All are welcome!

Keep on dancing,

Glad you saw that rattler before he did any damage. My cousin and I used to hunt for those rascals down near Rio Grande City. We would poke around everywhere, but thank goodness we must have made so much noise that they kept out of our way!

FULL MOON?????   AOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...I allus take advantage of the full moon...I generally have it all to myself as I go traipsin through the hood...most all my neighbors stay inside when there is a full moon....they know I, dr jekyl and mr hyde, is out on the prowl...makes me wildern a march hare...krazier than a pair of narnia psychofreniacs...hankerin fer some termater juice...

Doesnt affect my critters, they are all passed out in their respective hidie holes...Burge that sure is a cute puppy you got there...yes, dog good, snake bad...very bad...they tell me the snakes up around my place, hang out in the trees...tree rattlers...only saw one copper head up there, and he was headed for the road...good riddance I allus say...they say the tree rattler is an endangered species...if I see him, he is for sure...

Had RSO (range safety officer) duty at the gun club...very enjoyable day...lots of shooters...some very serious competition shooters...takes em 45 minutes to set up all their gear, and then another 45 to shuter down...glad I'm not that serious about it...anyone want to go with me sometime, be glad to take ya...for free too...well, cept for a small handling fee...

Someone brought out a .500 smith and wesson...I'm here to tell you, thats too much gun...the recoil on that bad boy almost bounces the hammer off your forehead...heck, you might as well just throw dynamite at what your shootin at instead of the .500...even the guy that owned it said it was too much...?????...my question woulda been..."well then why'd you buy it" , but I know the answer to that, It's a guy thing, "my gun is bigger than your gun..etc etc"...he only fired it twice, and put it back in the case...yeah, thats a thousand dollars plus that will look good in the gun safe...like I dont have any white elephants...got a whole herd...

Hey Lloyd????? You actually hunted for them thangs????? If you want to find one, dont look for them, they will find you...My floor guy at Northwest Floors on 43rd at almost old hempstead hwy, got married a few years back, to a lady that looks like she could be a playboy bunny...he said she is from wyoming or arizona, and is an avid snake wrangler...I dont care what the lady looks like, if she likes to hunt and handle snakes, she can do it without me...Me???? I'm a kat wrangler...Kats are Kool...much much kooler than any danged snake...I know, to each his or her own...well, handling a dangerous thing such as a poisonous snake, be like me tossing a loaded cocked gun in the air to see if it went off when it hit the ground...

We probably dont have too many snakes at least on the ground, because of all the hogs running wild...hogs will attack and eat any snake with no ill effects at all...good for them...hogs eat the snakes, and I shoot the hog...two varmits with one bullet...

Ok, time to go to dreamland...yeah right...well gonna try anyway...
Keep the sun at your six, and ride boldly ride...

PS; Happy birthday to all youse youtes...
Oh, it has been brought to my attention by one of our classmates, that Miss America 1983 was none other than Debra Sue Maffet, a 1974 Waltrip graduate...Is that true???? That woulda made her about 25 or so when she competed...isnt that a tad old for a Miss America???? Just askin, just curious...we have Dianes 72 Aries, think I'll look see if she is in it as a sophmore...

02/20/11 11:55 PM #3768

Beau Wann, Jr.

Good morrow mine waltripians,
I checked on Debra Sue Maffets biography, and it says she was from Cut N Shoot and graduated from Waltrip in 1975. Further states she was in the Imperial Guard...and that she was Miss America 1983...thats it...I do hope she has fared well beyond her celebrity status...Miss Americas do help carry on good deeds and works of a lot of charity organizations...which goes without saying...even though I said it...so, just disregard what I said, unless you dont want to, of course...moving right along...

I have misplaced a baggie full of SD cards some 2 gig to 6 gig memory...I told dw and showed her where I was putting them, saying, "this will be a great place for these cards"...I was right, it was so great, I cant find them now, and DW cant remember where either...I just know none of youse out there have ever done that...right???? I reallly need them too, because some go to the game cameras at the ranch, plus other stuff...sometimes, I just outsmart myself...

Like making breakfast...using a cast iron skillet, takes really a lot of skill, at least for me...almost everything sticks in it...like the pancakes I cooked on them this morn...just made a mess of them, so much that I had to make new batter and use a non stick skillet...you just have to know what you are doing...my mom, and of course all the women in the families and their predesessors, were masters at using any danged pot or pan, including the iron skillet...of course they also used about an inch of bacon grease in everything they cooked in, so not much would stick, if anything...I also have a more healthy respect for their physical strength as well as their mental strength...any of youse youtes use iron skillets anymore?????

I have a 10 inch and an 8 inch and a long two burner griddle...I'm here to tell you, those things are heavy, especially when you are holding one in your left hand and transferring the goodies into a serving dish, and or washing it...our moms and grandmothers and beyond, sure endured a lot, God Bless em!!!!

I remember when my mom got new "Club Aluminum" pots and pans set...sure was a lot lighter...in fact, she still has most all her old pots and pans...dont think she has gotten any new pans in 50 years...I guess thats where I get my "make do" attitude from...Diane and I have pretty much all the things we started with 28 years ago...we have added a new cuisinart pot set just recently, and a few new other utensils, but have kept the old stuff...hard to get rid of useful things...guess thats part of our clutter problem, not discarding duplicate items...I just know, no one else has that problem, right????

I found at the dollar general store on 43rd right across from K rogers, an old brand of a lavender soap...since we were talking about lavender fields a while back...this is an old smell, or a smell I remember from my youte...at my grandmothers house and our house...just made everything so homey and felt so good...smell, for me, is a larger part of my memory system than any visual memory, even though I am a visual person...walking the boys, sometimes I can smell folks cooking breakfast, bacon, pancakes, etc, and supper, chicken fried steak and other great oderiferous fare...and just for a monent, float on the smell, back to our DuBarry Days, or DeMilo, or as far back as Little Rock, Ark of the late 40's...

Every now and then, traveling down washington ave and other streets where a lot of eateries are, the smells of hotdogs popcorn, peanuts and coffee, steak and chicken and onions etc and other delectable smells,  transport me back to the smells downtown that emanated from the L C cafeteria, and Normandy cafeteria and Walgreens and Woolworths, and all the othe eateries, as well as the diesel from the busses and trucks blended in...which brings me to a dream last night...I dreamed we lived next door to Woolworths downtown in a town house, and I worked at the store that took woolworths place...I asked someone in my dream when Woolworths closed, and they said 17 years ago...dont have a clue where all that came from...havent thought of F W Woolworths in a while...at least I am employed in my dreams...wonder how much they are paying me...maybe I'll find out tonight...if anyone else is looking for work, I will see if we need any help there...I dont know what I do there yet, but I'm sure it cant be too hard...probably dont have to have algebra or latin...

Guess I will sign off for tonight and join Catahoula Jack and Cooper, and Big Oliver and all the other critters, that are now sound asleep...Jack and Oliver are asleep butt to butt and touching, on the couch upstairs...cooper hogging the couch downstairs...Katy in the wingback by the fireplace...Lacy on our bed, waiting for us to tuck her in...peaches is probably in the laundry basket, annie-bob in the basket on the dinning room table, and Sammy...well, Sammy is the gray ghost, and no telling where he is...probably under our bed...get close to one of the cats, and you can hear and feel them  purring...hopefully thats where I will be, purring and asleep...

Keep the sun at your six and ride boldly ride...
your friend from yesteryear and today...olbeauwannkanobie

Awwwwwwww Woolworth's - there and Foley's were my lunchtime stomping grounds when I worked downtown at Gulf Oil in the late 60's early 70's.   Remember the big orange Gulf revolving sign -- yep, I was there!!  Memoriee-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-es.  Glenda McDonald and Earl Foster worked there, too.  In fact, Glenda was the one that got me the job interview - she was already working at Gulf.  Thanks Glen!!!

Had a great time at Beverly Hengst's 65th Birthday Party on Saturday.  Good folks, great food and a beautiful home!

Have a good week.

Hugs,

Hey sisJ, I forgot you woiked down there...me too, at Houston National Bank in 65 till I got drafted in aug of 65, then again from 69-71...man I loved all those smells down there...ate at foleys a few times, sakowitz, and a couple of vendors on the street...well, didnt go back to my job at woolworths last night in my next dream, guess I got layed off...dont know where the heck I wound up...well, woke up with a cat sitting on my chest, gazing into my bloodshot eyes...meowing for breakfast...

But speaking of woolworths...it all started back in 1879, in Wilkes Barre, Pa., with $300 dollars from Frank Winfield Woolworth...one of the original five and dime stores...there are a few surviving stores in Germany, Austria, Mexico, and South Africa...the chain in Australia and New Zealand, were not actually a part of the F W Woolworth chain...they just stole the name, since it was not tradmarked in those countries...

The Woolworth Bldg was commissioned by ol FW is ownself, in NY city in 1910 and finished in 1913, and paid for entirely with cash...it was also the tallest building in the whirld till 1930...Woolworth evolved into Woolco in 1962, the same year that S S Kresges opened Kmart, and Dayton opened Target, and Sam opened Wallymart... I said someone told me Woolworth closed 17 years ago...actually it closed in 1997...focusing on it's Footlocker Division, Venator Group...then changing that to Footlocker Inc...

So there you have it, all you could possibly want to know about the start and demise of F W Woolworth...I am just a wealth of knowledge, aint I...cant find my furshlerginer glasses, or remember what I am looking for, but I can quote bible and verse on really useful information,  Woolworths...Their lunch counter downtown was excellent, as was the one in North West Mall...
ate breakfast and lunch there a time or three...

Well, got to spruce myself and Coop up for Coops Class today at 2...So I will bid youall adieu...for now...
yore frien, ol F W his ownself, olbeauwannkanobie

Good morning Fellow Waltripians, I hope your week is off to a grand start and that it finishes that way. I had a great weekend, took a trip down memory lane and wen out to the San Jacinto Battle Grounds and also toured the Battleship Texas. had not been there in a while. It was really enjoyable. If you haven't been in a while take time and go out there and take your grandkids along. Kids now days don't seem to have much of a sense of being Texans. I did not remember that the Monument was a Works Progress Administration project built 1938 - 1939. It is still a great view from the top. You get a real appreciation for what an industrial complex that area is. I still get a kick out of cetting up on the various anti-aircraft guns and making them operate. It's not a quick an ascent or descent but it's fun. I'm always amazed at the fire power of a dreadnaught like that. In case you're not keeping track the Texas is approaching it's 100th birthday! I visited with a couple of Park employees and picked up some interesting tidbits. One of them was the staff electrician. I always like that since my dad was an electrician. He commented that they're still using a lot of the original wiring. He says it's sort of disconcerting when the insulation just crumbles in your hand and you're holding a bare copper wire that you hope isn't hot. He pointed out a couple of search lights that were not original equipment but are mounted on a super structure in the aft section where the cranes for  launching boats and planes are. Seems when the war ended in Europe that the Texas was redeployed from the Atlantic to the Pacific because the high command was still gearing up for an invasion of the home islands of Japan. They thought the extra bombardment capabilities of the Texas would be handy. They were probably right. The 14 in. guns on the Texas could fire 1500 lb. armor piercing shells 13 miles. Anyway she had to stop at Pearl Harbor for maintenance and painting. While this was going on the crew was rummaging through a Navy warehouse for additional weaponry and someone came upon these search lights and had them mounted on the Texas. They have just recently determined through Navy records that those search lights were originally on the Arizona. After the Arizona was sunk they salvaged everything usable off her. So that's how they wound up on the Texas.

Back to the age of the Texas. They originally put her in the water in 1912. Apparently when they're building ships they float them as soon as possbile and finish construction afloat. she was commissioned in 1914. It really is amazing how much information some of the park employees have abou the ship.

Finished up the trip down memory lane by having a seafood dinner at Pier 8 in Seabrook. One of the few places on te Seabrook side that reopended after Hurricane Ike. I like it because it is more like the old days than all the Landry's operations on the Kemah side. I try to avoid the Landry's facilities. I just like the simpler  side.

Beauwannkanobie, your comments about smelling food cooking aromas brought back some real memories. particularly before everyone had air conditioning. You could get wonderfull smells of meals being prpared. Air conditioning is a prefect example of getting something wonderful but losing something else in the process. thank goodness we do so much bar-b-quing and grilling in Texas that you still enjoy the smell of food cooking. Interesting how things are always going around and coming around .....now the IN thing is to have an outdoor kitchen. Now we're going all the way back to Colonial times. I'm sure you remember Colonial times don't you ObieWann?

Time to move back into work mode. Don't forget this Wednesday, the 23rd is the meeting of the Whirld Affairs and Burger Evaluation Committee; Five Guys Burgers & Fries; N. Shepherd @ Loop 610; 11:45 until... Everyone is welcome!

I neglected to include in my previous posting the initial reason for a re-..visit to the San Jacinto Battleground. This year is the 175th anniversary of the Texas Revolution. The state has a promotion going that I read about in Texas Highways Magazine. There are five stops on the Independence trail. You get a Texas Passport at any Location or email them to get it. Then if you visit all five locations and get your passport stamped by Dec. 31, 2011 and return your validated to the state. They will send you a comemorative gift. I decided to do it because there are a couple of locations I've never been to. The locations are: San Jacinto (LaPorte), Washington On The Brazos, Gonzales, Goliad & The Alamo (San Antonio). So none are far from Houston, get started.

Rich and all, yes there is going to be a big Texas Independence Day celebration (175th year celebration) this weekend at Washington on the Brazos just 3 miles west of Navasota.  If you have not been to the park in the last several years, they have  built a huge two-story museum loaded with Texas memorbilia. Lots of food vendors, shops, and a working primitive farm.  My wife Kay will be playing with her dulcimer group, Star of Texas Dulcimers, on the second floor of the museum, both days.  The entire weekend is free, except for the food vendors.  It will be great fun for the whole family, educational as well as entertaining!!

If you haven't already gotten the latest issue of TEXAS MONTHLY, buy it.  It's the Terquasquicentennial Issue and has a few pull-outs you could even frame.  It has 175 bits of Texas history with locations mapped in geographical order.  Out of 175 items, I read 98 so far on our trip to/from The Woodlands Saturday/Sunday.  Has some well-known facts as well as a lot of obscure tidbits that are really interesting.

One hundred and seventy five years ago today Travis received an ultimatum from General Santa Anna to surrender the Alamo and to surrender its cannon. He answered that demand with a cannon ball and the reply, " Come and Take It". Thus began the siege of the Alamo.

Brave frontiersmen, willing to die for their freedom and what they believed in. The foundation of our Texas spirit and attitude.

Remember the Alamo!

Remember the Kingston Trio song?

They're rioting in Africa

They're straving in Spain

There's hurricanes in Florida

And Texas needs rain

Sounds very up to date with current events today. So why is it when you turn oon the morning news we learn about Lindsey Lohan's necklace and question "do we potty train our children too soon?" Oh well, guess I will go fill up the car's gas tank before the price hits $4/gal

Did deck maintenance Monday and Tuesday. Cleaned first then put on the sealer, then went to bed at 7PM
