wow jimmy, those pics really took me back-to a good place.i remember how it felt to walk on thick carpet at the met and lowes.mostly the metropolaton, sitting there and studying the archetecture before the lights went down, ceramoniously with a hush.a day gone by.

anybody have a pic of old main st.with the overhanging christmas decorations?what a treat it was to see them each year.

One thing Jimmy's pictures and Burge's comments reminded me of was what a big deal was made of how Foley's was going to decorate the windows in the downtown store. I also remember riding around looking at all the great christmas lights people had on their houses. A simpler place in time but they're great memories.

It's a Christmas miracle - our prayers have been answered for Lindsey Apostolo, Skeeter's daughter - J

Good afternoon,  I want to share some incredible news with you and the Waltrip Family.  On Monday, we met with the Doctors at the Burzynski Clinic to review the results of Lindsey's latest scans. Jackie, we received a miracle.......we were told by the Doctors that all the tumors are inactive (GONE).  I reviewed the scans several times with the Radiologist to make sure that what we were hearing was so, and yes they assured me that it was true. Praise God.  Lindsey will have three more months of treatments to be safe and then additional scans.

Thank you and everyone for all the positive thoughts and prayers. I ask, please keep Lindsey in your prayers through this journey.

God Bless, and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Leon

This is such wonderful news!  What a wonderful Christmas they will have!  It is truly a Christmas miracle!  Prayer and faith in healing work!  If you haven't read or kept up with Lindsey's personal story on CaringBridge.com now would be a great time to do it!  Her attitude and faith are remarkable!

Jim, just back in town after a trip to South Texas and loved your pictures of the Houston we all remember fondly. The Foley's display downtown is a special memory for both Fran and I and we talk about it often this time of year. And Kitrik was my first real crush, and I suspect many of our male classmates can say the same thing. Thanks for sharing.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Burge, what gorgeous snow pictures!!

And Lloyd, yes, you'd better get with it!

It's a busy week --- everyone be careful in the last minute Christmas rush. I know I'm not getting near a department store!  Traffic last week in the Galleria area was scary --- and no parking spaces - took me at least 30 minutes to find one.  And folks were not being nice!!!

Please keep Jack Bevil '66 in your prayers.  He is having surgery on December 23 at Methodist for a kidney transplant.  I just sent out a "broadcast" email.

Jack and his wife, Polly and son at the last Fuddrucker's - December 14

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.  We're all thinking Healthy for the New Year!

Hugs,

J

Beau Wann, Jr.

Even me??? Hmmmm...I guess even the lowliest of us needs a Merry Christmas, huh!!!

I kid and joke a lot, but dont think for one minute that I dont have a serious side...a caring side...a loving side...not much I wouldnt do for my brothers and sisters...besides trying to make you laugh, laughter is the best medicine...Thats one of the reasons I have been putting my aches and pains on the forum, to try to get others to open up, and let us know of their trials and tribulations...and how we can help...hells bells, I know I am not unique in my aches and pains, and others have it much harder than I...at least we can include all those in our prayers...remember, safety in numbers...and prayers...no shame in wishing for a little extra help...

Jack...our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and your donor and his family..."greater love hath no man than that he lay down his life for the love of another..." We will add you and your family and all involved to our prayer list at church...and care circles...Please have someone in your family keep us updated and apprised of your progress...as I suspect, you will not be able to have a computer in the hospital...they are sort of picky about that...

Pat, we share in the joy of your good news and  we all hope that your husband continues to progress towards and maintain good health...as we wish that for all...

Lindseys good news does have the ring of a miracle to it as does the Williams Family...not liking to stand up in crowds and speak, I stood up in church Sunday anyway, and relayed the good news to our little congregation...we have included Lindsey and all in our "cares and concerns and joys"...

Paige...our Pretty Pirate, has been under the weather...we all hope you are feeling better and on the road to a full recovery...you probably need some R and R on a sunny south sea island...eating bon bons and drinking margaritas...being waited on by some speedo wearing, slim, 30 minute abs,  YOUNG manly men...I have 65 year abs, and I have a couple of speedos, but I think it's against the law for me to don one of those...in public...I keep em around to play "Sea Hunt" , so I can fish out whatever I happen to drop in the cement pond...remember "Sea Hunt" with Lloyd Bridges??? He really was a UDT...(underwater Demolition Team) pre Navy Seal...I think I need a wet suit instead of a Speedo...

Growing up, you dont see all the problems that we see now that we are...ahem...more mature...
They should have classes in Elem and Jr high and High School and College, mandatory, "GROWING OLD 101"...we probably wouldnt have listened anyway...

I too, loved the lovely and talented  Ms Kitrik...I wanted to get my hands into her birthday penny pot...WHAT???? What did you think I was gonna say???? JUST GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER PEOPLE...remember how they would let a birthday kid on the show, grab a handful of pennies out of a pot or jar???? I thought a handful of pennies was a fortune...it sorta was back in them good ol DuBarry Days...

Looked at a 2011 Ford Truck last week...they now have 4 new motors...well, not in one truck, but four to choose from...a V6 Cleveland motor that develops 300 hp at 4500 or so RPMs...
My question, and it is not rhetorical, but what happened to the distributor????? There was none or spark plug wires or plugs...at least I couldnt find em...I looked on the little womans 07 exploder, and the distributor is SQUARE....how did they pull that off???? is there no rotor anymore???? I just havent kept up with cars and or motors since the 50's and 60's...in fact, I never raised the hood of my last two trucks...last vehicle I was able to work on was my 82 GMC...

I went ahead and traded my old ford truck for a 2011 F150 last Friday...even though I couldnt find the distributor...if it runs without one, I'm ok with that...this truck gets about a hundred miles to the gallon plus can go fast, should one wish to...and it can tow 6500 pounds of trailer should the need arise, and still get good gas mileage, plus it has a 6 speed auto/manual transmission...havent figured it out yet, so I leave it in Drive...except when it is parked of course...

the instrument panel is akin to that of the space shuttle...real pretty blue lights, everywhere...tv screens everywhere...with all kinds of information...plus now my phone is SYNC'D to my radio, and what a radio, and I can give it voice commands..."Peggy Sue, call my wife"..."Uh Beau, you handsome greek god you" Ms Sue says..."are you sure you want to call her??? You havent bought her Christmas presents yet"..."yeah, youre right...what do you suggest" I says...

"Well", Peggy says, "since YOU got a new truck for Christmas, I think maybe she needs a new gun or set of tools"..."Peggy Sue..." I says, "you are soooo smart and pretty too..." This will probably be my last truck...unless it isnt...I said that about my last 4 trucks...but they just keep getting better and better, more effecient and better built...My 82 I kept for 10 years, and then traded it in for a 92, and drove it for 14 years, then got a 2006, V6 with a 5 speed standard on the floor shift, which cost only 13K new...then I got Cooper, and he and I could barely fit in the truck, as it wasnt an extended cab...I could either take my beloved with me, or my dog...

traded up to a 2007 extended cab so my beloved and my dog could go along...wise decision...get to sleep in the house now...thought I'd trade the 07 on a newer one...07 3 years old has more trade in value than when it is 14 years old...well duh...took me 65 years to figure that one out...like I've said before, I am slow in the brain dept...sometimes...we are very fortunate indeed...and thankful...

I really would like an answer on the distributor question if anyone knows...

All youse youtes traveling for Christmas, we will keep you in our prayers for a safe roundtrip journey, as well as fun and happiness both directions and inbetween...

I promise I will run off copies of my moms and her moms Angel flake Biscuits and bring em to Fudds...It's not too long, maybe I will put it on the forum...hmmm, let me think about it....
Think???? Ow, that hurts my head...

I will sign off for now...feels like a sleepless night coming on...so I might be back...I know, thanks for the warning...
Wishing you all good health and happiness...peace of mind...stay safe and warm...
your friend and brother
Beau DOD

Beau, Robert, others, do you remember the great story of Kitrik and the little boy named Luther as he waited in line to get a handfull of pennies from the birthday penny pot? The joys of live television! I probably can't politely retell that story on this venue.  For years after, the newscasters on Channel 2 would from time to time make reference to that episode. Ron Stone, one of my favorite all time local newscasters, who is deceased now, would occasionally sign off by saying, "Good night neighbors, and good night Luther wherever you are".

My neighborhood and back yard look just like those snow pictures right now, minus the horse drawn buggy and driver - we had an additional 4 inches last night on top of the 8 we already had!  We are expecting more on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day!  Time to drive my 4 wheel drive again - a snow mobile would be nice, too.  I'll try to get some pictures posted soon via Beau's excellent instructions!

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

ok beau, the modern ignition system is digital and computerized.a gradated ring is attached to the crankshaft inside the engine, sort of like a sprocket with the teeth corisponding to the number of cylinders..sensors are situated around this ring, picking up a signal as the ring rotates with the crankshaft;this electrical signal is sent to the computer which factors in all other sensor information from the engine and transmission;oxygen, manifold pressure, temps etc.all this info is sent to the coil which is now situated over the spark plug.a v-8 will have 8 coils etc.so,the machanical timing is on the crankshaft and is compensated by the computer as to load and performance.its just about bullit-proof.the computer chips control the timing, fuel, and performance.the wires to the coil/over plugs are probably covered with a panel or shield.no more outside distributer.fancy, huh?

Ted, Jim & Beau there is no telling how many thousands of us males lusted after Kitterik. Also Ted if I remember correctly Ron Stone picked up the "Good Night Neighbors" from Sid Lasher the weather man when they both worked at Channel 11. Sid would always refer to the "good neighbors" down at Pearland or wherevever he had been making personal appearances. If memory serves me they both came to Houston from the same station in OK. I had the opportunity to get to know Ron Stone working on some charity events. He was just as nice personality as he was on TV. No pretense, just a very personable man who gave away a lot of time to raise money for good causes in Houston.

Burge, that info about the distributor is pretty fascinating. I'm getting some routine maintenance done on my car and that is proving to be an education in itself.

Best wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas. All you folks in really cold places stay warm, cozy and safe!!!

If I remember correctly Jay Stoneburner bought her corvette and she came to Waltrip

in the corvette .We all all drooled over her . I think they made a country song based

on the girl and the corvette.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Burge, thanks for the info...I guess I've been asleep for the last 20 years...I think my 92 had a distributor, maybe the 2006 and 07...aint it amazing what technology has advanced to???? I'll bet the surprise I experienced by seeing no distributor, is the same surprise guys had when the cars ceased to have the spark rod on the passenger side in a 32 ford...or the floor button to start a car...and not having to back up a hill because there was no fuel pump...I think it was a spark rod, advanced the timing or retarded it, or did it adjust the carburator???? dont remember which...had a friend in High school, with Tommy Warren, his name was Maury, and he had a 32 ford that when we went around a corner, you adjusted the rod on the passenger side with a pair of channel locks...the knob was no longer on the shaft...

I dont remember the Luther story...whatd he do, grab her )(^*&%^$%???? or pee on the floor??? or her leg...I do miss Ron Stone and Ed Brandon, and especially the weather man Doug Johnson...that ol boy had such a nice face and smile, if an F500 tornado or hurricane was bearing down on us, he had a way of making you feel good, no matter what...seemed genuine enough to me...Oh, and Ray Smith...Good TV figures all...

I'll bet ol Luther told Kittirik that his daddy said he "would like to..."gotta watch what you say around kiddos...

Lunch still on tomorrow at 5 burgers and fries guys?????

Just got back from shopping with my beloved...the roads are crowded, but the stores are not...????? Whats up with that???? My Beloved brought me back home and is gone again, with her sister...yeaaaaaaaa!!!!! I hate shopping...but glad that I am able to...

Christmas and 80 greedees...but, typical Houston weather...Hey Susan...send some snow down this way...man, that will gridlock the city...watched the Vikings and Bears game last night...it was bears wasnt it??? well, no matter...10 gredees there, and blowing snow...

ok, nap time...DOD

DOD. the Five Guys Burgers is still on for tomorrow at 11:30; NE corner of N. shepherd and Loop 610. All are welcome!!!

Trying to remember from one of my uncles or my grandad i think you advanced the timing and retarded the spark. Maybe Burge can jump in and clarify this point.

Hey that pennies jar brought back some memories. My Dad and I walking along and he grabbed and pulled me back and said "always watch where you are walking". I had just stepped over a penny on the ground. I picked it up and thought WOW! Remember what a penny could get you in a candy store back then. What does it have to be today for one to stop and pick it up?

Kay and Burge commented on the pictures of the old Lowes and Metropolitan movie theaters downtown. There was also the Majestic, and I have discussed some time ago on this forum the first date that Fran and I had, where we went to a movie there and then on to other misadventures afterwards.

I can still remember how ornate and detailed the architechure was inside those old theaters. We would sit there before the movies started and just marvel at all of the details, knowing even in our simple teenage minds that we were getting to see something special from the past in those old Vaudeville houses. Just another example of how fortunate and blessed we all were to have grown up in the  time and place we did!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey RobertD,
whenever I see a penney on the ground, I pick it up...suppose to be lucky, especially if it's heads...either way, it's worked for me...although, it doesnt help you do algebra...you can woirk on your cipherin of addin and takeaways...I have amassed a fortune in lost and found penneys...way yonder mor'n Mz Kittrik had in her dumb ol pot...hmmm lessee...add the 6 carry the 4...yup just as I suspected...a dollar four eighty seven mor'n what she had...

The Majestic...how aptly named...didnt go downtown to the show as often as we should have or would have liked to, but when we went, I wore my Sunday-go-to-meetin clothes...Didnt have a suit coat, but at least a white shirt and tie...My first suit of clothes was a gaberdine ensemble from Foleys...5 dollars I think it cost back in them DuBarry Days...and 5 dollars was a powerful lot of dough back then...5 dollars would sustain you for a whole week if you werent too frivolous...
Of course, it WAS MY 5 dollars I had to spend on it...

I made ten whole dollars doing one modeling gig at Foleys Downtown, and had to spend half of it on a dumb ol Sunday-go-to-meetin outfit...that I outgrew in notime, no how...hmmm, lessee, I were 7 or 8 during my modeling career...only lasted one day...but I coulda gone on to be on the cover of Gentlemans Quarterly...but playing in the dirt was my forte'...not struttin around like a peacock doin pretend talk...thats what they told us to do...me and this other ol girl was suppose to walk down the runway and pretend to talk...bout the onliest thing I could think of to say was, "I aint a holdin yore hand"...mostly I just moved my lips and sang the Mousketeer club song, and Mighty Mouse...and any other fool thing I could think of...doin pretend stuff in front of a crowd just embarrassed me  no end...Yet, me and the DuBarry boys, could play army and cowboys and indians and get shot and fall down and die for 30 minutes rollin in the dirt and leaves...then, make a miraculous recovery, and shoot the guy that shot you, and watch him roll around and die for 30 minutes in the dirt and leaves...

I had the sound of my six shooters and army rifle down perfect...all depended on how you shaped your mouth and cheeks and tongue...and spit all over anything within a couple o yard whilst you were blastin away at the bad guys...my how fertile our imaginations were back then...didnt need tv or xbox or wii or u or anything other than our imaginations...didnt even need toy guns, our fingers worked just as well, or a stick...shucky darn, you considered yourself lucky if you found a forked stick that looked like a gun...lucky indeed...

Ok, it's Wednesday...dead off in the middle of winter...jus a couplela days till ol Saint Nick puts in his two cents worth...you know, they still sell the dreaded HARD RIBBON CANDY...that stuff was so hard and sticky, you could use it as mortar between bricks...there's a candy dish at my moms on DeMilo, (isnt that something, we moved from DuBarry to DeMilo...two D streets) anyway, there's a candy dish sittin on the coffee table, as I type this, that still has HARD RIBBON CANDY in it from 1958...plus my dad would buy some new everyyear and toss it in to ferment with the old stuff...there aint no gettin it out of there either...you can take the lid off, and pick the dish up by the candy, unless the candy has moved over to the edge, and the lid is stuck...
It still is pretty...buuuuuut deadly...my mom wont let me throw the candy dish away, says it came over on the Mayflower or something...candy probably came with it too...

I just recently, or at least within the last year or so, watched how they STILL make that horrible candy, that and candy canes...I say horrible candy, I suppose there are some miscreants and or misfits that like it...(hmmm I'm a misfit and I dont like it) but it is just so hard, when you bit down on it, it would pull two teeth out in one fell swoope...generally an upper and a lower, at the same time together...now, I liked the gumdrop tree...I would eat the purple ones and the green ones and if you were lucky enough that somebody hadnt already beatin you to the BLACK ones, the BLACK ONES...then eat all the other colors when you ran out of the coveted BLACK ONES...

my mom made divinity, which would give you a shugar high that would rival cocaine or someother such drug...man that stuff was sweet...it seemed sweeter than just plain ol shugar...I always marveled at such mysteries as how something could be sweeter than shugar...divinity is like hot sauce, beats you up all way round, yet you keep coming back for more...Mom also made chocolate whiskey balls rolled up in powdered shugar...oh me oh my, they were so rich, you could only eat a half of one...if you were a full growed man, you could eat em like peanuts...but not havin the stature of being a full growed man, I could only eat a half...I would stash the other half in my room and eat it later, and go into an F5 diabetic shock...a more tame delicacy, was her pecan stuffed dates rolled in powdered shugar...wish I could eat pecans...

Ok, made myself hungry just talking about candy...sooooooo I will deplane, depart and otherwise head on out to our class of 64 whirld problem solvin lunch...

Looks like it's just me again...guess everyone has gone for the hollardays...had a meeting of the minds...4 guys at 5 guys B and Fs...we reached a consensus...man cannot live by burger alone...he must have fries...

lots of good conversation, as per usual...5 guys is a very busy place...even at 2 oclock, the line was almost out the door...

on this day in 1989, it was 7 degrees...

Shopped at Krogers tonight and got out of there about 10:30...saw an unusual sight...behind K rogers are the backyards of the houses on the next street... one of the houses has a deck up about 10 ft around a tree right on the fence line between the parking lot and backyards...I just happened to look up, and a rather large possum was traversing the bottom cable...TV...acted like it was just out on an evening stroll in the park or down the sidewalk...and headed for the tree with the high deck...it walked off the cable into the tree and down onto the deck...that was kinda kool to see around here...we had some in our hood when we first moved in...in fact my trash can was laying on it's side...I picked it up, and smiling up at me, "playing possum" was in fact a live possum, "playing possum"...I left the can on it's side, and came back later and it was gone...I wished him or her well...

guess I will try to get some shuteye...maybe...looks like a sleepless night...maybe...all the kats are down as well as the dogs, fric and frac...yawn...

goodnight mary ellen...goodnight granpaw...goodnight john boy...goodnight sweet prince...parting is such sweet sorrow...

DOD good to see you , Jim Taylor and Jim Brown at 5 Guys yesterday. I'm not sure we solved any world problems but we gave them a thrashing, eh? If it's true that we have a city ordinance that outlaws you appearing in public in a Speedo swimsuit in public, I can't want to ever hear you or anyone else say that our City Council doesn't do anything worthwhile. That ordinance is worth putting up with some of their deficiencies. That is a mighty fine looking truck you bought, Ford I will add. Me and all the other Ford stock holders thank you for your continuing patronage!

Everyone have a very Merry Christmas and don't forget. . .
