BroBeau, love the old pictures --- look on Jim Brown's profile of his Mom and Dad with family --- years ago.  All the little boys had the cowboy hats and their guns and holsters.  I remember my cowgirl hat with the string you pulled to keep it on!  Those were the days!!!

Look on homepage under Announcements, I added "Old Farmer's Advice" --

Update on Barbara, she had her staples out yesterday and doing great.  She'll be at Fudd's next Tuesday - 14th.

Thought it was appropriate to change my picture -- this was taken on Congress Avenue in Austin -- I was probably 5.  All decked out with my hat and coat.  Back then they took the "street" pictures -- in the original picture you can see the Capitol in the background, but this is a cropped version --- and look at that Santa!

Oh, got my Christmas tree up!

  Hugs

J

Pearl Harbor and Christmas celebrations all in one day... WOW...

Greetings all. I have been in rehearsals for the 12 days of Christmas... not the song, it just seems like 12 straight days of rehearsals. I don't recall it taking so long to get a concert down back when i could remember the music for more than a couple of hours. I must say it has been truly a great way to get into the season and the reason. One concert down and another on Sunday. Anyone over in CS/Bryan Sunday night at 6 p.m. come on by for the Central Baptist Christmas Concert - The First Noel.

Burge, I remember Gale Storm but not from the movie. She was "My Little Margie" on TV.

I want the angel biscuit receipe too... Not that I will cook them, but I am sure they will turn out to be one of my favorite foods. I have missed a bunch of good stuff by being busy. I think I must not be away so long.

As always, it is fun and informative to visit with ya'll here. See ya, soon

Good Morrow mine waltripians,
Hey Jackie, love that picture of you and Santa...you look much the same today as you did back then...a tad taller now of course, but same great smile...and Santa looks much the same now too...I got on here last night, and typed a long dissertation, only to have it go away...seems the website was under maintenance till 5:30 this AM morning early, not evening...oh well, wasnt anything special, had a hard time keeping a steady train of thought going anyhoo...

Paige???? Is the church in College Station??? or Bryan??? No matter, I will bring it up on mapquest and find it...bet yall sound heavenly and angelic...any particular tune or tunes...Handels Messiah perhaps????  12 days of christmas???? I kinda sorta dont like that one anymore...Remember some radio station did an all day 12 Days of Christmas, and they would call, or make believe call to France for the French hens and call others for all the rest...got old in a hurry...

Hey Rich???? Methinks you used the wrongest word to describe how I describe my pets...disparage????  au contraire mon ami...I love my pets...I never disparage...I merely "chronicle" their anaphylactic antics...humorous hijinks...and their tabby tomfoolery...to say that I disparage, is disparaging in and of itsownselfiveness...I may poke fun at them, but they poke fun at me, so alls fair in love and pokefunniness...eh hoser??? Disparage??? "Nay hark spake mark"...or worids to that defect...

SPCA crisis is over for the moment...they only stated two days ago that they were running short of food for the meals on wheels pets program...when I got there yesterday with our contribution, they had tons of pet food...the young lady at the mainest desk told me that the citizens of Houston are  "very generous and rapid in their response to SPCA needs" ...so next time you hear on the "government controlled media" that we citizens dont care or dont give enough, give em a raspberry...
Whilst I was in line to check out at CostCo, there was a lady in front of me buying toys for needy kiddos in the 5th ward.(dont know if they serve other parts of the city, but I imagine they do)
She told me the name of her group, "prince" something??? not sure, left my bionic ears at home so I couldnt understand her...Heres how much the citizens of Houston dont care, she spent 2015.00 dollars at this particular CostCo, (I saw the total as it rang up) and she had other shoppers at other stores gathering up toys and other supplies for the less fortunate...CostCo was also stepping up and providing discounts on all items...

Any excess food at the SPCA doesnt go to waste, they can always use it...plus they need dark lettuce, not iceberg, for the rabbits and hamsters and the like...the lady gave a list to me of the things they need all the time...any of youse ranchers, (real ranchers, not a part time rancher like me) have any old but usable Halters, horse blankets and lead ropes...
you can get on their site and pull the list up...

oops, got to cinch up the raindeer and take the boys to the vet...see ya on the flipflop...

Thanks, Burge -- it's all a labor of love for all of you.  Y'all have made it what it is and so I send my thanks to my wonderful classmates/friends for touching all of our hearts with laughter, memories and wonderful stories and pictures.  We are all here for each other - good times and bad.

Hey Beau, I love that picture of your dad and his brothers and their parents. The boy with the tie, your dad, is the spitting image of a kid I used to go to school with at Oak Forest Elementary. His name was Harold. Remember him?

I also love Jackie's picture with Santa and Jim's family pictures too.

Aren't pictures magical in the way they transport us back in time?

Hidy Ho...Back from the vet with John Boy and Cooper...Coop still weighs the same, 110 pounds...whereas Mr Jack Daniels gained a pound and a half and is now hovering around 94 pounds...NO MORE OSCAR MAYER OR TREATS FOR THAT BOY...looks like it's green bean city for the canine side of the zoo...

I love those old pictures...guess cause times were just a mite simpler back then...or seemed to be...Hey burge, 32 ford roadster, and 39 and 40 ford and or willis coupe of the same year was my favorite...always liked the racing team of Stone, Woods and Cook...they used a 39 or 40 willis or ford coupe...I think it was red and had BIG JOHN on the side of it...hmmmm, maybe that was another racing team...Big John Masmanian??? I remember a picture from HotRod magazine of a 39 or 40 ford or willis was standing on it's back bumper after "poppin a wheelie"...My Grandfather had a 39 or 40 two seat coupe...had a floor shift...I remember riding in it and him making it "buck" letting the clutch out and RPMs not enough to make it go smooth...Of course back then, I had know idear what he was doing to make it "buck"...

I remember My Little Margie...one of my favorites back then...remember Sky King???? Who played Penny??? I always thought it was Gale Storm...but it wasnt...it was Gloria Winters...who played sky king????  nope not me or Pretty prissy pirate paige...Kirby Grant, thats who...

Gale Storms characters name was...????? Margie Allbright...she was the 21 year old daughter of a banker, Vern Allbright, played by Charles Farrell...You can still buy all the old shows and movies on DVD from TCM...

Gonna have to search my "it's around here somewhere" box for some more old pictures...seems I sawr one of me and my broken arm back in the summer of 59...right before I was to go to Black...had to spend one year in "detention" at Aldine Jr High...or thats what I called it...very interesting year, 1958 was for me...the magic 13 years old...a real teenager...a real...idjit teenager...How did none of the rest of youse youtes not have to go to Aldine Jr High???? Mangum Manor was zoned to Aldine until Summer of 59 when HISD picked it up and gave up someother territory to Aldine...Jimmy Sue, you rode the bus with me didnt you??? Teddy...when did you move to the corner of 43rd and Antoine??? Or did you???? Maybe my rememberer has unremembered...cause if you were there in 57-58 you woulda gone to AJrHigh...ow, I sprained my brain trying to remember...

Ok, gotta sign off for now...gonna check my "it's around here somewhere" box for some memories...

Good frosty morn mine fine waltripines,
Hoppalong here...just back from morning patrol with Howdy and Rowdy...them ol boys are a trip and seven eights...tried to get on the site last night, but I couldnt even get on the web...kept telling me I wasnt set up for it, or 75 other reasons why it was not letting me on...no matter...

I put a new master picture on the forum...I thought it would just change the one I am on now, but it goes back and changes them all...but thats ok...anyway, the picture is of me on the set of Tora Tora Tora down on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor...I am a sailor playing an army guy...that is a 37 plymouth I am leaning against...got to drive that bad boy...got to drive a command vehicle, looks like the fore runner to the hummer 1, but with no top...sits high too, and easy to turn over...which they did, with a stunt man of course, not yours truly...what a hoot it was just being on the set...mostly we just sat around while the director set up the scenes he wanted...got paid 30 dollars a day...and they supplied lunch, for .85 cents...usually meat and potatoes with all the trimmings...plus we got 55 dollars for every stunt we did, like getting blown off a ship, or out of a fox hole...I did a couple, but there were a lot of guys/extras doing all sorts of stunts...

Never did see me in the movie, but one scene I remember them shooting and wound up in the movie...they blew up a phosphorus bomb and we were running across the runway as fast as we could...took several rehersals before the actual shoot...there were lots of planes, seaplanes/PBYs and B-17s and P-40 Tomahawks...mostly they were plywood cutouts to look like the real thing...for fires, they used propane tanks and garden hoses...the director would yell, "bring up your fires", and the "fire handlers" would lightem up, and I forgot what they used to make em smoke a lot...what fun it was...

I thought it turned out to be a not so good B movie...the Navy gave em some barracks and hangars on Ford Island to destroy and a couple of old destroyer escort training ships to blow up, and they had about 29 planes in all,  a couple of real P-40s and maybe one or two real Zeros, but the rest of the Zeros were painted up ATF6 Texans...there are close similarities, but the Texan is a larger plane...there was one fatality and numerous injuries...one of the pilots crashed in a pineapple field, and when we were filming at Wheeler, a phosphorus charge went off too close to some extras, and a P-40 went out of control and did some damage to other props on the set...as well as some injuries from flying debris...

I'll put a couple of pics I found on this post...I have quite a few, but some are slides...

Three Zeros hugging the deck for a bombing run...you can see the backside of a couple of plywood P-40s

There were a few real B-17s...but you can see the backside of a couple of plywood ones, plus some zeros coming in for a strafing run...

Here we are, working hard...this is about what we did mostly between shots, and sometimes they were hours apart or days apart...I did look taller in the movie, plus they said I was so handsome, they didnt need to apply makeup...a natural...I will be signing autographs at Fudds next Tuesday...that is after I clean out the litter boxes and vacuum etc...all the things a movie star does...there will be a small autograph fee, you know, to help with expenses for my entourage and roadies...
well, got to run and do movie star stuff...clean up dog stuff...go to Krogers...etc...

Hate to put a damper on the holiday season, but some of you may have heard of the Wednesday murder here in Houston of my sweet cousin, Nancy Hiller Shank at the hand of her own 20-year-old deranged son, John. Our family is trying to deal with this tragedy as best we can, but some things are totally inexplicable as is this one.

Believe this or not but just this past Monday, this crazy kid was visiting the office of Dr Mark Hiller (coincidentally a cousin of both Nancy and me) where Mark had scheduled further dental treatment for him today (Thursday)---which obviously won't happen. Depending on the funeral arrangements and how I feel, I will try to be at FUDD's next Tuesday.

Good to hear about Babara's outcome.

Doug...sorry about the tragedy in your family...like you said, some things are inexplicable...need anything???

Hey Jim...Frank Mann did live right across from Teddie on 43rd and antoine...also a man named Kliber (sp) was also a councilman, lived right across the street from us on Costa Rica and DeMilo...He moved to LaGrange and opened up a Ford Dealership...He was a real rancher...

this was Christmas between 46 and 49. Believe it or not, I remember that tractor and dump truck...

The back of the picture says this is me...ol puffy cheeks...probably is because you can tell by the early primitive motorcycle I'm riding...

Would you look at the impish smile on that young lady...dont know who she is, but I think she either wanted me or my car..."Please Lord, if you get this crazy woman off my car,  I'll eat brussel sprouts"...I thought my 51 ford was my first car...apparently I was mistaken...I wonder if I was married to HER....

Doug,

So sorry to hear of your cousin's tragic death at the hands of her son.  I had just heard  this as I was rolling out of my drive this morning, was angsted because of the circumstances of it!  Also heard where he will have a well-known attorney representing him...... Lord, bless your family in your hardship.

Doug sorry to hear about your family's tragedy. Deaths in the family are tough to deal with. When it involves violence and another family member that really increases the grief. If we can be of assistance let us know. We're all extended family so don't hesitate. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I

I found these while looking for Christmas pictures. Black Jr. High 1960... I remember the play. My Mom came down the asile of the auditorium with a big round of bolonga and was swinging it at the people sitting close. She couldn't speak English and the other ladies were trying to help here. As I recall the three "ladies" brought the house down with laughter. My Mom is still abit "outhtere a bit"... of course I am nothing like her !!!

Notice in the Flood Control article that the "work is expected to cost $28,000. I love that the news of the day was a Smile Contest and the Reagan Red Coats magazine subscription drive.

I did find some of the Christmas pictures. This was my Mom's idea because the two little ones here kept taking the presents off and playing with them. Those two little ones would be Robin, my niece and Tim my oldest.

Howdyhigruessgott ffrom good old Europe,

good to hear all the news from far away. And the other news - what a Christmas for you and your family, Doug. I felt bad, but how are you getting around? It might help at least a little to know or to feel that we are all with you.

Since two weeks its winter with a lot of snow and temperatures down to ZERO! But today its warm above 30.

A lot more to tell but I've got to leave,

BJT...good to hear from you...all that cold is good for to keep the beer cold...eh!!!...ah yes, those lazy hazy crazy daze of summer... I see you have a nice stein full, or half full in front of you...an optimist would say that glass is half full...a Texan beer drinker would say that glass is half empty...another round tarbender...We havent experienced much cold weather here, just the general cold one day, warm the next...got down to freezing last week, and supposed to get there again tomorrow night...but it warms up rapidly here, which isnt unusual...we have had a couple of heavy frosts, which is a good thing...kills mosquitos...my contention is that it only makes em mad, and they take it out on us in summer, with a vengeance...

DougR...saw in the morning Pravda that Mr Marzio, director of MFAH, passed away...Great loss for the museum...heard he did some amazing things...you need a distraction from your burdens??? Lunch sometime next week...I can give you my ideas on how the whirld should be run...maybe make you laugh or at least smile...I could bring the three amigos, Cooper, Jack and Big Oliver...I know for sure that would produce a good feeling...

Rode Pegasus yesterday...after my chores of course...got through them early so I could ride early...left the castle, and it was 47 degrees...had on my heavy leather jacket, plus two layers of clothes...by 10 oclock, I was ready to get nekid...or at least shed a couple of layers...rode out to WestOaks mall...my darling grandaughter Haley was singing in her school choir...what a treat...got to see both sons, one daughter-in-law, my beloved, and my other beloved grandaughter, all in one day, at the same time, at the same place...Kids sang carols, plus some new ones I hadnt heard...and great too...all were so cute and dressed alike, dark pants, white fluffy shirt, with a purple cummerbun and purple bow tie and santa hat...the two directors have done a marvelous job, and from the looks and smiles on their faces, they really enjoy what they do...yea for them...

Went home as fast as I could to shed some leather...wasnt too bad as long as I kept moving...at 70 miles an hour...decided to stay home and bake cookies...hmmm, letsee...ride harley...bake cookies...ok, guess I'll bake cookies...that brings joy to more than just me, so it was a good decision...BUTTER WAS RANCID!!!!!!!!!! When was the last time any of youse youtes have experienced rancid butter???? I cant ever remember running into that problem...so, ran to the store and got more...seems like the bright thing to do wouldnt you say...
Made my Chocolate, chocolate chip cookies...did a few other things trying to capture something really special...didnt happen, just regular plain ol choc choc chip cookies...good, but nothing special...The real secret to baking good cookies, anykind, is to not let them bake for longer than 8 minutes...unless they are suppose to be crispy and crunchy...I like mine almost cake like...

I found a picture of me at 14, with my broken arm...the date says November 59...also took a remarkable photo of Cooper...remarkable, in that I took it, and with a point and shoot camera...all the years I considered myself an amateur photographer, I took miles and miles of the expensive roll film, producing only a handful of the illusive, special one of a kind shot...Thank goodness for the digital cameras withthe SD card...

Cooper                                     Jack aka John Boy                      Big Oliver
The three Amigos...

House still looks the same today...Me too...

Hi Doug!  I am so sorry to hear of the tragedy that has touched your family!  You are in the thoughts and prayers of all who participate in this forum as well as those who read it and beyond!  Just know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.

It is really cold here already (Indy) and we have had some snow, but are expecting a significant snow fall tomorrow with below zero temps at night some of the week.  Brr!  Take me back to Texas (and soon!)!

It's funny how the older I get the more I avoid the malls at Christmas - especially on the weekend.  Went to Kohl's today to pick up a pan for an angel food cake and turned around and left because the checkout line was so long!  I love Christmas, but I don't like the crowds!

Take care everyone and be careful out there!

I attended the Christmas wreath laying ceremony at the Houston National Cemetery today, and as it was two years ago when I helped out, it was a very emotional event for me. We were told that we had 26,000 wreaths to lay on veterans graves this year, and that Houston, due to it's generous sponsors and volunteers, was laying more wreaths than any other national cemetery, including Arlington. We were also told that together, the national cemeteries in Texas were going to be laying more wreaths than all of the others in our country put together. That says alot about Texas and the things we hold dear. It also says alot about the generous sponsors who contribute the money to buy the wreaths and have them delivered. Apparently Walmart is a major contributor, and they also donated the big 18 wheeled trucks and drivers to deliver and help distribute the wreaths today.

The event was bigger and more well organized than when Fran and I helped out two years ago, and there were alot more people there helping out. I think that year we put out about 15,000 wreaths

They have about 75,000 men and women buried at the Houston National Cemetery, so we put a wreath at about 1/3 of the total. And they do different sections each year so that every grave gets one every few years.

I looked for someone else that I knew while there, and I know a number of our classmates including Beau have participated in the past and were probably there, but with the big crowd it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

And Susan, the devil asked me to tell you this part, it was 74 degrees in Houston this afternoon and I did my wreath laying in shorts and a tee shirt. You're right girl, you need to get back down here as soon as you can.

My dad is buried in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, a very beautiful place, and one of these years I'm going to attend that ceremony and make sure he gets a wreath. I visit there from time to time, and even though he's been gone for 45 years, it's still hard to say goodbye.

The Houston National Cemetery is nicer in appearance each time I go there.I went to Dick Kreig's

services last month also from Waltrip. I don't know how many years I have been going there

but in 1965 when my father died the old cemetery was full and the new one was not ready .

My father was buried at Woodlawn where other family were .The VA paid for the plot for him

and my mother.Getting back to the new cemetery I really am impressed every time I go there.
