Hey Paige,

What is Central Baptist Church doing this Christmas?  I had to go all the way back to pg 77 to read last year's comment from you for the churches name.  I stumbled upon pg 70 first and read about the Barkley tale - very interesting, inspiring, faith of the children.  Hope he is continuing to thrive.

Bernd I read an interesting story at lunch. It is on MSN. Apparently there is a museum in Berlin that has an exhibit relating to Hinduism. According to the article you can rent a bed in the exhibit and spend the night in middle of 12 reindeer and 24 canaries. The price. . . . only $1,363.00 for the night. Have you partaken of that opportunity? Heck you might want to spend two or three nights at that price!!!

Thanks Kay, had a great one and hope everyone did. Had the great dinner, family, camp fire, smoores, and family football game to work it off. (we let the girls win) Then enjoyed the Aggie game. All stayed until Saturday. Kids on the couch, grandkids on the floor. Wasn't the weather great. Does anyone else remember when you were kids, going to visit relatives and playing all day and then sleeping on quits on the floor. NOW---Lets look forward to a Merry Christmas.

Boy Robert you brought back a good childhood memory. When we used to go visit relatives all of the kids and ususally some of the adults ended up sleeping on what we called pallets, blankets on the floor. It was fun then, although it probably would be a little harder on the back at this age. The first time I ever heard the term "guest bedroom", I thought, what the heck is that? It's safe to say that back then most of our houses were barely big enough for the family that lived there, much less for visiting relatives.

Anyway, thanks for the wonderful memory. That's my favorite thing about this awesome website and Forum that Jackie has created, the chance to go back in time and recall the way things were back in our good old days! Or as Beau would say, "our youte".

12/01/10 07:34 PM #3457

Robert Derrick

Teddie, that was the word I was looking for---pallet. And  you are right, heck our houses hardly had room for our own families, but somehow, we could put up as many as that came. (That's probably not proper English). But us kids would play so hard it did not matter where we fianlly crashed.

thank god for those times that we had as families gathered together for the christmas season.some of those christmas's i remember so well as warm, happy, exciting and filled with love and thankfulness.it was for everybody, good food and sometimes a little eggnog and mogan david wine.christians and the name of christ are now under full attack;from the secular humanist, the firey islamists and the 'sons of perdition'.for all the prophets of the one god and the sacrifice of 'the son of man';there was rejoicing for the eternal power of the spirit; forgiveness and joy.the spirit can also grieve for its creation; people scoff and mock, even those who know what the bloodline of jesse means.

to everyone ,....    MERRY CHRISTMAS

12/02/10 09:46 AM #3459

Richard Meek '65

Robert, I've noticed that I can still crash like I did as a "youte". It just doesn't take as much activity or time to get to that point. Ted I think you are right that a night on a pallet on the floor, these days, would require mechanical assistance to get off the floor in the morning.

DOD, haven't heard from you in a few days, whas up? You didn't fall in the cement pond again did you? It seems that Cooper, John Boy and Olie all of  whose intelligence you disparage seem to stay out of the pond. Hmmmm, what does that say?

Keep on dancing,

Had a great birthday and many greetings from my Waltrip friends! Thank you!!! It was a beautiful day and I celebrated by making a Dr appointment, my first Medicare  physical courtesy of Uncle Sam. Reminds me of the football physicals we got at Waltrip on the auditorium stage. Dr Synott doing the honors. Brr, it was cold in there. Then there was the induction center physical at the Federal Building on San Jacinto. that was a trip... a bad trip.

No birthday cake tonight, just a cherrry pie!

LH you are correct. Seems like now when I finally get down on the floor to play with the grandkids, I have to get their parents to help me up. Ohh but dont you rmemeber when your parents had to yell at you you long after dark that it was time come in and get ready for bed. Memories are what it's all about.

Our grandson Will is fighting the bad virus that is going around Houston right now. Channel 13 had a report on it last night and again this morning and it is affecting a lot of people. High fever, coughing, achiness, some stomach problems, altogether not much fun. He's on day 7 and the report refers to it as the 11 day virus as that's how long it's affecting most people. I hope us old folks have already gotten immunity to this one because Fran and I have been fully exposed, as has most of our family. Time will tell.

One of my favorite memories occured when I was little . My family went to my grandparents

house in Kerens , Texas 15 miles east of Corsicana during Christmas. On the square stood the

tallest Santa Claus I had ever seen and today he is Big Tex (since 1951)

Great story Jim, I'll bet not many people knew that. Sounds like ol' tall santa kinda did what the pro athletes do, got a big promotion a new uniform and more money and moved to the state fair and the big time!

Scotty, sorry about your Tigers but it sounded like a good game.

Burge, I love the line "wash my brain out with soap". Made me, as the kids say, lol.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Greetings-professor-Falken...it-has-been-a-long-time...would-you-like-to-play-a-game???

it's 4:30 AM on  a Sunday...been up since 2...so what else is knew??? Been havin  a devil of a time with pain...hard to concentrate and keep a steady thought...amazing how pain distorts and twists thought...thats the reason I have been absent from the forum...couldnt keep a train of thought, except the train running over my body...

Been embroiled in the per usual activities...ok thanksgiving...too crippled up and hurtin to be of much help to my beloved...but did as much as allowed to do...DW is such a trooper...nothing seems to faze her...good person she...
We had the regular crowd here for T Day dinner...Daughter in law and sister and mother in law all pitched in and really was a big help for DW...got her out of the kitchen, hours ahead of schedule...SCHEDULE??? on a holiday???? I dont think so...but DW said with all the help, it shaved about 3 hours off cleanup time...

I didnt make my angel flake biscuits this time, just too time consuming, plus I would have had to stand up for too long...also was gonna try my hand at gravy this year...but, I made a test batch earlier in the week, and it was ok, for the likes of me and Cooper and Jack, but I wouldnt want anyone else to have to suffer through it...it was ok, just not as tasty, but kinda salty too...
and lumpy...wasnt he one of the seven dwarfs??? Oops, cant say dwarf now can we...vertically challenged...yeah, thats the ticket...

My Mother-in-law made the gravy...again...cant beat a moms thanksgiving gravy...dont know what mothers possess that allows them to turn out such masterpieces...guess it's just one of those MOM things...I'll bet that all you moms in our class can cook as well as your moms..eh??? Maybe even some of the guys too...Well, I can cook a select few things pretty good, but moms could just seem to cook anything and everything, and well too...

Put the boys out back, and they just stared in the window and back door the whole time...of course, someone, who shall remain nameless, kept slipping them small bits of ham and turkey and sausage...WASNT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah right, and pigs can fly...
Kats were all in our bedroom...each had a favored spot to nap in...every now and again, a paw would slip under the door and kind of feel around...I guess they were either looking for a newspaper or a plate of goodies...and since none of them have bothered to learn to read, we know it wasnt a newspaper...but, most likely just being curious...you know how kats are...if it's shut, they open it, if it's open, they shut it, unless they opened it in the first place, then YOU shut it...locked Annie-Bob in the powder room...by accident...she snuck in as I was hanging up jackets and such...after a couple of hours, I started missing her and calling her produced nary a sight of her...finally opened PR door and voila, there she was curled up just inside...scared me, I thought she had gotten outside somehow...we are VERY VERY EXTRA CAREFUL about the felines NOT GETTING OUT...in 30 years, never had one escape...yet...

Been up to ye olde country place...me and the boys...cant do very much, all stove up like an old man and all...but managed to get around some...I like walking the land that God has intrusted me with...even with a walking stick...through the woods and meadows...once the boys got the "bounding through the countryside" out of their system, they pretty much stuck to my side, one on each side...well, except for the occasional burst of energy chasing a butterfly...what good loyal companions they are...they seem to know I am not the me I'm suppose to be...you reckon it's the walking stick that has them more attentive??? Well whatever it is, it is muchly appreciated...

Still going out on patrol every morn and night, but it has become quite a chore...finally had to ask DW to help me out and take jack, and I hate to bother Diane with petty details, as she has her hands full with her job and driving to and from...but, Jack pulls so hard, just was killing my back and hip joints and legs...Coop is easy to walk...he just wants to stop and smell every blade of grass in the hood...and every light post, and every mail box...methinks that ol boy is part bloodhound...as well as couch potato...

Rode Pegasus some these last couple of weeks...first time I have felt pain whilst riding...but once I got my face in the wind and pipes purring, pain pretty much secondary...until I got off...getting harder to throw my leg over the saddle nowdays...not looking forward to the day I cannot ride anymore...I know it's coming...I even looked at a new bike...a Heritage Softail with mini apes and bags and all kinds of goodies, AND PURPLE TOO...buuuuuuut...I'd feel like a traitor if I sold Pegasus...I've always said that it was the only bike I would ever want...I guess it's just something about a SHINY NEW TOY that attracts us...I got over it...

Rode yesterday, Saturday, up to Bellville for "First Saturday" fair...met a good friend there for lunch...He and I worked together for about 30 years...Good man he...plus, there isnt anything he cant fix or work on, from guns to motorcycles...any new firearm he gets, he promptly tears it down and puts it back together...and just about anything else he buys...he is a TRUE MOTORCYCLIST...he has 4 or 5 BMWs that he has torn down and rebuilt...he rode his bikes to work, rain or shine, day or night, and been to sturgis, (I have yet to make it) and to bike week in Daytona Florida, and pretty much all over the country...like I said, he is a TRUE MOTORCYCLIST, whereas I am just a Harley rider...

Don, my bellville friend, and I rode east about 8 miles outside of Bellville on 529, and had lunch at THE PIT STOP BBQ JOINT...pretty good fare they have there...someother motorcyclists pulled up as we were sitting outside talking...funny thing about MC riders...we're all pretty much friends whether we know each other or not...not hard to strike up a conversation at all...just start out talking about their bikes or your bikes, and voila, new friend...one of the REALLY great things about riding...all the people you meet...

Got some honey whilst in Bellville...Daves Honey...even talked to dave and his wife...good folks...If any of youse youtes see a guy selling Honey on the corner of 34th and Shepherd, dont buy it...I did a couple a months ago, and noticed that it was unusually runny...honey is not runny...I asked Dave about it, and he said he knows who the guy is, and he was putting in about 5% honey, and the rest corn syrup...they were selling it at Caninos and were forced to stop selling it there...I HATE CHEATERS AND SCAM ARTISTS...so, remember, if you buy roadside honey, it should not pour like syrup or water...

Ifin any of youse youtes would like my ANGEL FLAKE BISCUIT recipe, I would be glad to share...My mom gave it too me, and it was her moms...I have made them to perfection before, but then I have made them to ruination...well, not inedible, just not what they were suppose to be...the key and most important item, is the YEAST...has to be just right, otherwise they dont rise...they rise whilst they are cooking, and not before...you can make them a week ahead of time, but store them in a plastic bag, in the fridge...when they are good, they are very very good...when they are bad...I messed up, but they are still edible...

It's almost 6 and it has taken me awhile to type this out...that train of thought thing I was telling youse about...I guess maybe someday I will get some relief...one way or another...Now, I dont for an instant think I am the onliest (san leon for only) one that hurts or has problems...not by a long shot...neither am I seeking symphony nor pity...I also know that whatever problem I have or you have, someone else has a more worser problem...it's just that...I'M NOT READY YET...I have toooooo much left undone...I have biscuits to make...ponies to ride...dogs to walk...pools to clean...nah, the pool can clean itself for all I give a rats patootie...

Guess I will sign off for now...might get a little shut eye before church...although all the dogs and cats have been millin about thinking, "well youre up, must be time to eat", or words to that effect...I keep telling them, it's too early, but now it is getting close to their breakfast, sooooo guess I will spring my young patootie into the kitchen and "git er done"...

Have a swell day...
Your friend and slightly bent and broken brother-in-class...Beauregard C Ephus DOD...Or words to that effect...

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

BroBeau,  so sorry you're having to deal with more pain.  Just not right --- Our Vice President who is only 50 was crippled up all last week with his back --- he has gone through all the rehabs, exercises and then finally the injections, etc. over the past year and for a while it gets better ---- than it strikes again!!!  You probably just need to eat some fruitcake to feel better!!!  Okay - I know that's not funny.  Take care and I'm relieved to see you on the forum -- I was about to call you!

Burge, Gale Storms -- she was my favortie -- I had almost forgotten about her - what a great actress she was.  Not sure I've seen that movie either, I'll have to check it out.

Guess all of you have noticed I put a Christmas countdown calender on homepage.  I still haven't adjusted that this is DECEMBER.  Just took down Thanksgiving decorations yesterday.  I'd better get with it --- I love the Christmas holidays.  And, oh, the wonderful memories -- after moving to Houston in 1956 we always went back to Austin for Christmas.  Christmas Eve was always at my Grandmother's (mother's mom) and Christmas Day at Mamaw's (dad's mother).  Of course my dad being 1 of 9 kids -- it was a huge "immediate" family gathering witih the aunts, uncles and cousins.  We always had homemade eggnog -- that was a tradition and my kids have carried that tradition over to their families.  Plus all the yummy goodies - Beau, I'd like to have your angel flake biscuit recipe.  I know what you mean about yeast - I have two favorites I make -- my Mamaw's sweetrolls and my Mom's butterhorns.  If you don't handle the yeast just right -- it can be a disaster!

Everyone have fun during the holidays and stay safe and healthy.

Okay I'm going get my decorations out and maybe put the tree up!

I'll see y'all on December 14th at Fudd's!

Hugs  J

I would like Beau's recipe for angel biscuits and I want
to meet Beau , he seems like quite a character.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Jim, be glad to give you a copy of the recipe...you gonna be at Fudds next Tuesday, or the 14th???? Or if you live out of town, I send it to you...I guess I could put it on the forum, but it may be patented, or copyrighted from long ago in a galaxy far far away...Like to meet you...I  can never have enough friends...

Sunday eefening...something about a Sunday evening...serene...quiet...calm...that is until Annie-Bob got the afternoon crazies...zippin all over the house...with Jack in tow, trying to check her ID...with his nose...which she will smack with her built in stilettos...and he will cry and come running to me for symphony, bless his little ol pea-pickin heart...remember the 100 pound bag of potato chips I bought at CostCo???? And just perzactly what I was gonna do with all those chips???? Not a problem anymore...I had em out nibbling on one or two, and didnt close the top and put them back...during Annie-bobs sojourn into the twilight zone of the Flying Wallendas, she smacked headlong into them and scattered them all to hell and gone, much to my dismay, but much to the delight of two hungry dogs...Finally got em cleaned up, but you know and I know that I will be steppin on em and crunchin um for decades to come, and with bare feet too...

Church today...had the 40 usual suspects...I was runnin behind, as usual...washed my hair and couldnt do anything with it...after I fed the zoo this morn about 5:30 or so, I sat down in the chair in the library and fell smooth flat stone cold asleep...woke up and someone had covered me up, that and two cats...it was my beloved...plus she took both dogs for a walk this morn, by herownself, just for me...so I jumped up, rather slowly, and made the bed and picked up and cooked my unpatented breakfast..the usual fare, eggs, grits, gravy, biscuits, sausage etc...hmmm good...

Then I got behind, and we had to go in two cars, which I hate, because I like to at least do things together on the weekends...I do enough stuff by myself during the week...But it turned out ok...today was communion day plus the hanging of the greens and Chrismons...Diane and two other ladies purchased all new christmas finery for the sanctuary...the old stuff, was just that...OLD...in fact we were using it when I started 28 years ago...some of it was pretty dilapidated...it has always been fun decorating the church...always looks so beautiful on Christmas eve...If some of youse youtes dont have a church home on Christmas eve, everyone is welcome...We also had a luncheon after the services, and celebrated the churches 62nd birthday...had a huge cake...SWEET???? man that thing would send you into a diabetic coma...but it was good...chocolate and vanilla, both together at the same time...

I tried not to limp in church today, but couldnt quite pull it off...for some reason I couldnt get my walking stick and left leg in sync together at the same time...dont you just love redundant redundancy redundantly...or would that be reluctantly????? No matter...

Took my mandatory Sunday nafteroon nap...then me and the little woman went outside and put up lights...some were in wads, which I promptly plugged in and threw in the bushes, much to the displeasure of the little woman...I dont like stringing lights...period...or restringing, or taking them down...I thought I had thrown them all away, but half dozen strings of the little buggers reared their ugly heads saying..."string me, hang me, string me, wrap me around a tree..." man, I hate em...the pushy little devils...

Oh great, here comes Jack crunching on some tater chips...if he pulls out a beer, I am gonna be agitated...and aggravated...

Been workin on some Christmas Carols with my guitar...why would anyone slip in an E flat and a B flat or a B7th...the beatles were notorious for writing songs in E flat and B flat...my grandfather played the rinky tink piano in burlesque houses and theaters before talkies, and he said B flat was the onliest (san leon for only) key he could play in...never did understand that one...I thought if you could play the piano, you could play in just about any key, especially the major notes...

Well, anyway, I was trying to play The Christmas Song, and it has a B7th in the 6th measure, and an E and B flat 7th in the 7th measure and an E flat in the 8th measure and then again dotted throughout some of the other measures...I can play it ok up to there, but my fingers are too slow to form those chords...plus Angels We Have Heard On High, is ok up till you get to the refrain, or the "Glo oooo o oooo o oooo oria, then in the "in excelsis" measure, it has 4 chord changes, one for each note...I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not really very good...But to me, the Christmas Carols seem to be hard to sing and play, and they are written in too high a key...instead of tuning my guitar like all the others, to E on the piano, I tune it down to D which is a good key for me to sing in...or easier anyway...but still some of the tunes are still too high, or start off in a good range, but then just sail way out of sight on the musical scale...

Away in the Manger is an easy tune and a good one to play...bout the onliest one that is...I like Holy Holy Holy, but it gets all rowdy and goes high on me...Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby and Perry Como and Elvis dont have any trouble with the songs, how come I do...DONT ANSWER THAT...I know I'm a no talent, but one likes to dream...

Ray Price sings Christmas Carols real nice...one of them especially, "I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day" ...but guess what???? in the 2nd and third measure there is a C sharp diminished, and a D sharp diminished...Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the words to that song...how about that????  Remember "Pretty Paper" by Roy Orbison???? It was written by Willie Nelson...

Hey Lloyd, you are probably a much better muscian than I, you ever wonder about some of the songs???? In O Little Town Of Bethlehem, somewhere around the 12th measure, they show a N.C...I'm assuming that means "no chord", but an A minor works good there...I dont read music, but I can sight read fairly well...or semi well...

I love Silent Night...well duh...who doesnt... that one is fairly simple...the music was written by Franz X Gruber...cool huh!!!! The music of Hark The Herald Angels Sing, was written by Mendelssohn...well, sorry to bore you with all my musings on Christmas music...

Guess I will sign off for now, probably be back around 2 am or so...Good Sunday Evening to ya all...
your broken down old friend and walkin bowl of nucular (I know it's spelled wrong. but GW use to pronounce it that way) rice krispies...Beauregard C Ephus...DOD...or woids to that defect...

Beau, I don't think you mentioned it but my favorite Christmas song is O' Holy Night. I like just about every rendition of it, but my all time favorite is by a country singer named John Berry. Go to playlist.com and listen to it, just beautiful.

During our junior year at Waltrip the music teacher put together a boys choir to sing that one song during the school Christmas program. Several of my upper classmen buddies, including Allan Womble, Jim Reynolds, Jim Montgomery and Keith Buvinghausen thought it would be cool if we all joined the choir and so we did and practiced that one song over and over several mornings a week leading up to Christmas holidays. On the last day we performed, and to everyone's surprise it was pretty good. We performed that one song that one day then dropped back out of the choir. Talk about your one trick ponies!

I've loved that song ever since.

My favorite was The Little Drummer Boy .We performed it at the reflecton pool downtown.

We were all scouts then and we sounded pretty good .(at least to each other.)

I never could carry a note.

12/06/10 06:47 PM #3477

Beau Wann, Jr.

I really mentioned Holy Holy Holy, by mistake, which I like and have performed it. I meant Oh Holy Night...that is my all time favorite, and starts out in a key you can sing, and then gets rowdy and high, but still a most beautiful song...
Did you know that Hal Leonard Corporation owns all the copyrights to all the Christmas Carols.Purchased them, or renewed them in 2002..

.

I found an old picture of my Dad and his brothers and my grand parents, whilst I was digging around in my "around here somewhere" box.
Dad is the kid with the tie on the right. Paul or Buddy is the kid on the left with the tie...I think this was around 1926-27, either in Little Rock, Ark., Missouri, or Mississippi.
The little boy in the middle, Richard, was the youngest and hit the beaches of Normandy on D-day at the age of 17...Hard to imagine that soldiers fighting in any battle or war, were once that young...and inocenct...
