Bernd, thank you so much. We all hope the rain in Berlin is nothing like what's been happening here. At this time we know nothing outside our small world, we just get local news of everything happening since good ol Harv showed up.
I seem to have developed "survivors guilt" somewhat. We've been watching every channel and the unfolding catasrophe. Had a bad feeling when we sat down to eat during the day, lose my apetite and when we try to go to sleep in our DRY warm beds, I just toss and turn thinking about the folks standing in knee deep water soaked to the bone. We donate, but it just doesnt seem like we're doing enough. But, it is what it is I suppose.
We've had about 2 foot of rain here on Wolverton Mountain. And clever fellow that I am, and having listened to Mr Clausen, sometimes, I know water travels downhill, mostly. I've been told that there are a couple of rivers that flow uphill, but dont remember which ones, and I'm not sure I believe that.
Finally got out today and checked the surrounding communities, Chappell Hill is ok, lots of deah hanging around. Brenham looks ok, didnt do much traveling there, seemed to be an unusual amount of traffic. Saw lots of boats coming from houston and heading to houston.
I'm sure most have seen the unbelievably spectacular response from our neighbors here in Texas and Louisiana and as far away as Kentucky. Saw a minister driving a boat from Kentucky being interviewed by one of the reporters.
Speaking of reporters, one of the tv stations was blasting the first ladys (I dont even know what her name is) choice of shoes whilst she and the president were visiting the flooded area, calling her an elitist, blah blah blah.
All I can say is, GET A LIFE! ! ! Who cares what she or anyone was wearing. What should she havve worn, waders? Ok, I'll get off that, it just boggles the mind of the small mindedness of some folks. As much as I may dislike, whoever, I dont give a flying flip what they are wearing. My wardrobe isnt exactly from whichever is the trendy dept store nowdays. Mine is generally from Academy or Bass Pro, Sears, Penneys etc, so I'm not one that could critisize anyones dress!
I would like to say that the mayor of Houston has handled this unprecedented catastrophe about as well as anyone could. And I wouldnt have voted for the guy. But he and all the other leaders have put politics aside and done a magnificent job.
All the agencys, from what I can determine from the news, city, and county and state and federal levels have performed magnificent. I cant remember ever when most everything that these agencys were doing have come off so smoothly, or as smooth as this catastrophe has allowed. I keep hearing reporters ask the question , "why wasnt Houston evacuated"? I heard the mayor ask the reporter "how do you evacuate 6.5 million people in 2 days"?
I guess folks dont remember the evacuation debacle during the wimp storm "RITA"! Some folks were stuck on the freeways for days, and some died, including a bus load of senior citizens, burned to death. I dont care what your politics is, COULD YOU OR I HAVE DONE ANY BETTER? I dont know about you, but I sure couldnt think of better things to do than what was being done. Well, one thing, I would have restricted the press from the rescue boats. They were taking up 2 spaces that could have been used by folks that needed to be rescued. And I would have limited their incessant yaking to 6 words an hour.
My youngest that finally made it back to Houston from Alaska Saturday? Methinks? Rescued an elderly mother of one of his life long friends somewhere around Memorial and Dairy Ashford. Then if that wasnt enough, his girlfriend got a call from some longtime friends, an elderly couple in their 80s that lived behind Barker reservoir.
Kevin rushed over in his old dodge truck as the water was getting higher, helped the couple gather important things, meds and papers etc, then got them out through almost 4 ft of water. Some rescuers in an airboat told him he would never make it...Wrong, or right thing to say to Kevin, he made it, no problem. He and Kellie took the couple to their home, got them comfortable with food and drink and space to sleep, then headed back to their restaurants to put together box lunches for the firestation down the street.
The restaurant on I-10 had a couple inches of water in it, so they cleaned it up and were getting both restaurants ready to open by 11 AM tomorrow. I told em to keep the menu simple, HOTDOGS, I love hotdogs. Well, my contribution to the situation. Less than 2 cents worth I suppose! I dont know why I'm surprised at Kevins heroics and a cool head in a distressing situation. He was in Katrina in Jamaica and again in New Orleans.
I know we all are proud of our children and grandchildren etc, but both of my boys are so cool and amazing under fire. I'm not sure I could duplicate the things they have done, I'd like to think so, but not so sure. For every small story like the above with my son, there a thousands going on around the clock in Houston and surrounding areas.
Methinks I'm going to buy an airboat, and a duce and a half (2and a half ton army transport), then I'll be ready next time for sure. Well, I guess I'm really too old and crippled up to be of much use, but I can pray real hard!
I do hope all have faired as well as we have, if not our prayers and thoughts are with you. Time for me to deplane boss...
Keep your boat close and your Mae West closer...
