Beau Wann, Jr.

Good moanin chirin. Cunnel Beauregaud Cephus E Lee heah. Duh, who else would it be! Sa fine moanin, already 80 befoa 7 AM,  but gonna get hotta than a chicken laig daincin cross Georgia.  Ah dont know what that means, but sure sounds wise and sagey. Whatint no dew upon the grass this moanin, ceptin a smidgen.  You know what that means!  I dont, so if you do, please tell me, then we both knwo.

Had a cattle round up a couple of days ago. Seems the grass IS greener on tother side of the fence after all.  All of clives cows, bout 15 give or take a heifer or two, snuck under the fence down at the crick. Woke up to seein cows grazin in front of ye olde homestead. took me a moment to realize that the cows were on our place and that the house hadnt moved over to their place.  Just boggles the mind how sharp mah mind can get. I know all yall are suitably impressed!

Anyways, had to get on mah mule, Kawasaki Mule, mah fence cuttin and fixin pliers and try to round them up. Ah opened up a place in the fence wide enough for all these fat gals to waddle through, fat and sassy ah might add.  tooke me awhile bout an hour to get em all back on their side O the fence. Onliest (east texas for only) one left was the bull. Aint that always the case!

Clive told me he was small for his size...what?  He probably weighs just over 1000 lbs, which compared to Beaudacious (former buckin bull star, now deceased) that weighed in at just under 3000 lbs, so ah guess in comparison, ol red bull here is small, as ah am to the red bull. Well, you get the picture.  Anyway, ol red was just not gonna budge from eatin all the fine grass on our side. I'd run at him with the mule and he would backup a tad, and maybe move to the right or left some, but no more.

I went back up to the house to see if ah had me a empty feed sack to shake at him. Knowing what the sound of a feed sack is, most cows will follow you, and then glare at you if youve tricked them with an empty one.  Anyway I finally found one in the Waltrip Daince hall/Cooper memorial ice haus, and started out towards the ornery ol cuss, ol red, when I spyed a figure, a small figure walkin up to ol red and it looked like it was being talked to.

OMG, IT WAS DIANE, MAH BELOVED!  She was standin there, straw hat on, apron, and with a rake in one hand and a feed sack in the other, right up next to ol red.  Anyway, she is just givin that ol boy what fer. Ah dont know what she was sayin to him, but he raised his head up and started following her to the opening, real slow like he was in trouble. all the time he was nuzzlin the feed sack,  I could hear here talkin to him, dont rightly know what she was saying, but it was working!   I wanted to help, but was frozen with fear for diane, also knowing that sometimes moren one is too many. So I just watched with my hand on my .45 just in case all else failed.

Ol Red was followin her like a dutiful child, and when she got to the opening in the fence, she stepped aside and ol red started through the opening and stopped and looked at Diane. She straightened up and pointed to where she wanted him to go, and he just shook his massive head and sauntered on through the fence.  A bull whisperer ifin I ever did hear of one.  I wanted to scold her for being so so careless? "Darlin, that ol bull could and woulda stomped a mud hole in you", ah tried to say calmly.  She just grinned and said she had it, so I let it go.

Ah wonder if I could get her a job at the rodeo as a rodeo clown. Shucks, one O them bad bulls gets to being too sassy, she could just go over and give it what fer and that would be that.   Nah, dont think ahm gonna do that. Ok, got to go, got some folks coming to take a look at sumpin I need done.

Cunnel Beauregauhd Cephus E Lee singing off...your frien and resident knutjob.

Cephus, your story reminded me of this image I saved last year when we were getting all of the heavy spring rains. The caption I put on it then was, "You know you're in Texas, when you look up and there standing in the floodwater is your mom saying, You get home right now young man! And so embarrassing when she does it in front of all of the other cattle". I'd put my money on Diane as the wrangler, it's that teacher authority thing.

08/17/17 07:55 PM #8782

Beau Wann, Jr.

Yup, that teacher thang for sure.  Shucky darn, I'm not going outside anymore, I'll just send Diane, let her handle it. TJ, is that Diane standing in the water with the long horn bovine?  "Alright young man, you get home this moment, and take out the trash, feed the dog and do your homework. I will be in later to check on you..."

Yup that's my woman.  WONDER WOMAN...DUNT DA DAAAA...(wonder woman music)

That woman has gotten into the pioneer spirit, she made an apple pie in an ARN SKILLET. Dang thangs too heavy. got to have a forklift, or DUNT DA DAAAA, WONDER WOMAN Diane.

It's me again Margaret !  Duh, who else !   I mentioned  a spell back about paw paw jelly. Anyone ever had that?   I know it's a real thing, because I've seen it ever now and again at small country stores.  Dont know what a paw paw is, (cept the grandpaw paw paw).  Remember we use to sing a song in elementary school, "pickin up paw paws puttin um in a basket, pickin up paw paws puttin um in a basket...".   Just t hought I'd ask.

Had the exterminators over today, they come oncet (east texas for once) a quarter.  Have to move everything away from the walls and pick up all the dog and cat toys and dishes, what a pain.  Then have to clean the winder lights (east texas for window)    where the bug killin juice has run down. Windex does not work ! ! !          I have found some new stuff that cleans them no problem.  It's a foan called "SPRAYWAY". It's for glass, but works on lots of things, granite tops and the like.

Ok, time to deplane boss, got an ear appt today.  then I'm gonna come home and take a nap. Yeah, that's the ticket, a nap.

I remember the song, and there is a wild berry that grows in East Texas named Mayhaw that makes a fine jelly,  so maybe there's some connection. Probably not a good idea to put any kind of berries in your pocket for very long though.

I remember that stupid song, picking up paw paws and put em in your pocket. Had no revelance to me and I was not a city slicker. I think it was northerly inspired. What is a paw paw?  I hated that song along with another song about eating pimecun which is dried bison meat or jerky. I find it strange that the same song was at different elementary schools in HISD in the '50's.

08/18/17 09:26 PM #8786

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

I remember liking that song....in the Brownies, I think.  Wow, is it ever hot today and yesterday...100  will be glad when we can all talk about Fall.

08/19/17 03:16 PM #8787

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey all yall !  Thanks to Tom Gann, he sent  a discription of the paw paw. It is a real tree and the largest fruit grown in America. It is mainly in Appalachia.  The article said it is cross between the apple and banana, and tastes like neither. It's about 2 inches wide and 10 inches long, so the song, "puttin um in your pocket", seems far fetched. They musta had real big pockets back then.

The sad part, is once a forrest is clear cut and the paw paw is cut down, it is hard to reestablish.  So I'm going to make it my mission in life to grow a forrest of paw paw trees.   Next time I visit one of the little country stores in the a rea I'll buy some of the tantalizing jelly, if they have any.  Last I looked at the CHIMACS thermometer, we had 102. Been over 100 here everyday since June.  Had 110 last week. Previous high was last August 109.  At least here.

Me and the "bull whisperer" going out to dinner tonight.  Hope we can find a good place to eat up here. Few and far between good eateries up here in the high country.  Had ears and HAs worked on yesterday, seems more hearing loss.  Retested, and reconfigured my HAs and now I can hear again.  Stopped at the Steak/Seafood dump of Hempstead for lunch. blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyuuuuuuuuuuuuukkkkkkkkkkkkkk.  That was probably the worst food I have ever had the misfortune to pass my lips.

The place came highly recommended.  they must have been getting back at me for a fox paw I made.
I cant even describe the taste, or nontaste.  None of the batter was seasoned, nothing was even salted or peppered, served tap water for table water, tea sucked.  They said have a nice day when I left,. I said it can only go up from here. Told em it was the worst meal or non meal I have hever experienced. GOOD FREAKIN BYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....

Bennie Schielack

I realize it is way too late, but . . . . . the information I have gleened over the past few years is . . . . . paint your out door ceilings . . . . . patios, porches etc . . . . . . sky blue . . . . . . supposed to fool the wasps etc into thinking its the sky and they will not build there nests there.  Don't know if this is true, but I have been told this by several folks here in God's country . . . . . .

08/20/17 06:10 PM #8789

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey James K, gonna send you some paw paws and the recording of it by lawrence welk.
Bennie, we painted our front porch sky blue, and so far it doesnt work.  Not as many as before, but we still get boids and wasps and spahders, and snakes and all sorts of other bugs, but never elephants and water buffaloes.  I've even seen a couple of assassin bugs. Big black ugly with big jaws, really mean looking.

Went to our new little country church in the country, and they even invited us to lunch afterwards.  Super great bunch of folks. Kinda reminds me of all yall.  Most of the folks are big city converts like us. Just as nice as can be.  Once again leaving the church felt like walking out of heaven into a hotter part of heaven. 100degrees today. That's 7 million days of straight 100 degree weather.

Actually saw some fireflies at dusk down at the creek. I think those bad boys and girls are on steroids, because their lights have some fire behind em.  Just looked at the CHIMACS thermometer and a cold front must have come through, it's 96.  Sweater weather for sure. One of the church folks said some rain is coming. He is 80, so I acquiesce to him being senior.  Even my beloved said we should have rain by next friday.  Couldnt it come just a little bit earlier? Say, tomorrow?  Ok, Ok, I know it's not on my schedule, but the lords!

Ok, I've got to take the pups out, so I will return....

08/22/17 05:40 PM #8790

Beau Wann, Jr.

Ok, ahm back ! ! !  I know, I know, I said I was going to take the pups out and be right back, but that dint happen.  Got so many things to get done around cheer ah get sidetracked pretty easily.

Yall watch the EEEclipse?   Before the EEEclipse, I was asked a jillion times if I was going to watch it, and during the EEEclipse, I was asked a zillion times if I was watching it, and now after the EEEclipse, IVe bee asked if I had watched it.   NO, NO, and No ! ! !   What I was watching was a chocolate EEEclaire.  I love CEs!  I kept staring at it and no, I didnt go blind, but I did go almost crazy because I wanted to EEEat the EEEclaire, but have been watching my caloric intake.

So, I ate the EEEclaire anyway. I'll watch my caloric intake some other day.   Well, I didnt want anyone else to suffer the slings and arrows of EEEclaire watching, who knows, a body might go blind staring at the EEEclaire.  I do know if you get hit in the eyes with an EEEclaire, you will be temporarily blind, and blond seeing as how the custard inside the EEEclaire is yellowish. Did I mention I love EEEclaires?   Havent had one in a coons age, however long that is!   This one was good !

Just got through with lunch.  I had been marinating some chicken thighs for about two days, and put them on the grill about 1 oclock.  the cookbooks all say 30 minutes and they will be done, just make sure it's at 165 gredees.  It cooked for two hours before it finally reached the desired temp.  I was cooking them in an aluminum pan, using the BBQ pit like an oven. I had it up to 350 for 1.5 hours, and finally lit another burner and got it up to 450 and let it cook for another 30 minutes.

Finally it made it to the desired temp inside the meat.  Put it on plates along with killer homemade potato salad and homemade coleslaw and some poke and beans. We were starving!   The PS was wonderful, best I've ever made and eaten, CS was great, Beans were, eh? what can I say about P&Bs. I did doctor em up a tad, but didnt reach the desired results....THE CHICKEN WAS TASTELESS ! ! !   It had been marinating in a quarter pound of butter, bacon grease, BBQ sauce for two days.   Boo and Boo ! I hate BBQing, it almost never turns out worth beans.

Maybe if I had some Paw Paws to baste em with....I should have just stuck to eating EEEclairs. Well, even if the meal wasnt as projected and hoped for, we can still count our blessings, eh waht?   We are blessed beyond all belief, crumby tasting chicken and all.

got to 102 today, that's a zillion and a half days of temps over 100.   Wish this global warning would cut it out.   I'd like to see the temp go to 50 during the day and 40 at night, and stay that way till next August, and then warm up to 50 and 40. Sound like a plan?  It's on order, along with some rain.  However, and aint there always a however, weather folks say we will get a TS by Friday and dump 10 or more inches on us and then probably dump some more on us.   We woujld like some rain, of course, but maybe not quite so much all at once. I know, you have to take waht you can, when you can.

Ok,  time to deplane boss.  Got to go to the general store. Need some salt poke, hawg jowls, deviled hawk aigs, mustard for a poltice (been feeling a might poorly here and there, so thought a poltice would help) flour and salt, a side of bacon, greens and some twine, chawin terbacky, and a licorice stick. (and a partridge in a pear tree)

Oh, I think we have QUAIL up here at the wannderosa.  Havent positively identified them, but they sure do look like em. Gonna investigate more and I'll letcha know what I've conjured up with.

Tropical Depression Harvey forecast to hit Gulf Coast as a hurricane by week's end

Harvey could reach hurricane strength before slamming into the Texas coast later this week.(Photo: National Hurricane Center)

Tropical Depression Harvey redeveloped Wednesday morning in the Bay of Campeche and is forecast to roar into the Texas or Louisiana coast as a hurricane later this week.

"We are anticipating Harvey being a hurricane at landfall," the National Hurricane Center said.

Rainfall from Harvey could cause life-threatening flooding across the region, the hurricane center predicted.

A hurricane watch has been posted along the Texas coast from near Port Mansfield to San Luis Pass.

Harvey is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches with isolated maximum amounts of 20 inches over the middle and upper Texas coast and southwest Louisiana through next Tuesday. Heavy rainfall could begin as early as Friday morning.

Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city, is in the cross hairs for the heavy rain.

At Wednesday's City Council meeting, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said now is the time for citizens to prepare, encouraging everyone to make an emergency kit, minimize travel and monitor conditions, according to KHOU-TV.

Thanks sis Jackie.  Anyone in touch with Wayne T Lake?  His place is down in Aransas Pass?  Port Oconnor?  Well, somewhere along the gulf.  HEY WAYNE, BE SAFE! ! !

Rain has been daincin around us for two days, but nary a drop here in the desert. "Been runnin to and fro, hard workin at the mill, never fail in the mail yet come a rotten bill"...Oh , sorry, really have been runnin to and fro tryin to get ready for the storm.  Got a supply of water layed in, gasoline and diesel, and chocolate and stuff.

Bought a new generator, hope I dont have to use it.   Onliest (east texas for only) think I'm really worried about is the bridge.  Only way in and out.  Saw a couple of cracks in it, so I've been watering it hoping to settle the earth before the onslaught of 10 or 20 inches of reign!   If I was 20 years younger, I'd build a new bridge.

Storm looking worser and worser, now predicting a cat 3. We have a 3 cat here already!   Ok, just recollected I need to do more stuff, but "I'LL BE BACK" ...

Got a text from Wayne (aka Mr. Lucky) says his place is ok. no rising water. yet!  Hope it remains as is!
Hey Scotty,  I have loved the Heights since I was kneehigh to a grasshopper.  We lived in a Garage Apt On Key Street right where 11th turns into Micheaux and Beauchamp in 1950.  Use to be west side church, now an event venue.

Dont know what it was about the Heights, but it was magical for me. I think the attraction was that it was not as big as downtown, but just as interesting. Lots of shops and a theater and stuff, lots of stuff. Plus one could take the bus from Oak Forest, to Sears on Shepherd, then on to the Heights, then on to downtown if one so chose. Usually one didnt choose to go downtown unless one was accompanied by a responsible adult.

Latest weather report from CHIMACS (Chappell Hill Intergalactic Meterologic and Cornpone Society):  Some rain, about 1/2 inch so far. Wind about normal gutsing 16 MPH or roundabouts thereof.  I know we have probably another 5 or 6 days of rain and wind. Weather folks predicting we will get 25+ inches over the next 5 days.  Boo...! ! ! !

So far so good !  Laid in a supply of water and food, about a months worth, gas for the generator, vehicles topped off, tractor topped off with diesel.  Just hope we dont have to use any of it.  Spent the better part of the last 3 days preparing, shopping, checking and rechecking lists, putting all potential missiles in storage. Dont forget to fill a bathtub with water so you can flush the terlet (archie bunker for toilette) in case electricity goes out and pumping station loses power.

Good luck to all yall. If we lose power, we will lose TVs and Computers and WIFI. We have no land line!
Onliest thing I'm worried about is the bridge.  25 inches  could tear it aloose (east texas for loose), and then we are really up a creek without a paddle, or bridge.

I really wanted to live in Montana ! ! !  Well, they have snowstorms and stuff.  Just no place ideal is there.
My youngest is stranded in alaska till tomorrow night methinks.  Was suppose to catch a flight to night at midnight, but that was delayed. Now it's tomorrow night and he will fly to Atlanta and then on to Houston, maybe. Why anyone would want to go fishing in Alaska is beyond me.  Krogers has some very nice fish, already cleaned and ready to cook, and so much cheaper than flying to Alaska to catch one trout. Oh well...

Got an email saying the In memoriam section had been updated. Didnt see any new names, but looked at the ones I'd seen before.  Made me so sad...Looking at the faces and names I'd been with since Oak Fores Elementary.

Got a text saying "the guy responsible for auto correct had passed away, may he roast in peas"...you probably got it right away, took me a minute before the light came on.  Sometimes I am so slow to catch on to things.

Diane and I finally got to stop and rest around 2 today. Took showers and just collapsed.  Now I am hurting so bad, everywhere, I can hardly think.  Diane has packed me in hot rice socks for the last couple of hours, about 8 or 9 of them. Finally had to get out from under them because I was "roasting in peas" and sweating profusely.

I think I will stay up tonight and just, stay up!  Hate to go to sleep and wake up to a dark silent house.  So logically, if I stay awake, that wont happen, right?  Yeah, I thought so ! ! !

   Time to deplane bossssss....

BroBeau, I posted "In Memory" Virigina Pettit who passed away in December.  Please look under 2016 deaths.  Teddie just found out yesterday from her daughter, Brooke.

All in my area doing okay from Harvey (I still live in the old neighborhood of Oak Forest).    Yesterday it was light rain and wind, then at 3:33 a.m. this morn heavy bands of rain and wind since.  Thank goodness we  still have power.  Stay safe and sound there's more to come.

Beau Wann, Jr.

hey Sis J,  right you are. Thanks for keeping us all posted on the important things, and thanks to TJ for finding out the info.  Been light rain here till 4:30 this morn, had 1/2 inch till then, now 2.5 inches, still not bad. We can sure use it.  Rode the mule down to the creek to take a gander at the bridge. Looks like it is ok, for now! Cows in next pasture mooed at me, so I mooed back. That got em all to runnin after me and yodeling. Of course I had to yodel back.  Dixie Belle was barking and runnin up and down the fence line wanting to herd them.

One day down and  5 more to go before the inviskable rabbit, Harvey, goes away.  You know, I never really did like that movie no matter how many times I watched it and how hard I tried to like it. I think it was because folks wanted to meddle in Mr Dowds bidness.  Dont like meddlers even in the talkies!  I do hope the weather center is wrong about Harvey hanging around and meandering all over us dumping too much rain.

Methinks I will go lay down and take a mid morning snooze, eh what!  Ok, a show of hands voting for us all to go back to bed.....2...100...320...482...ok, the eyes have it aye!  it's back to bed for me...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

BroBeau,

So glad to hear Thrill on Hill in Chappell Hill is okay.  They keep saying more to come but Harvey is so  deceiving;  has been pretty calm here in Oak Forest.   A few strong bands here and there but over in minutes.  Keywords according to news "Don't let your guard down - stay ready". Okay!

You've probably seen the pictures of  Sienna Plantations in Missouri City where many homes were damaged by tornado or very high winds.   Barbara Porter Raines' daughter, Sommer, and Barb's grandchildren, live there.  Barbara said they are fine and thank God no damage to their house.

Waltrip family please keep all of those in the storm's path in your prayers.  Would like to hear from others who are experiencing the storm and how you are doing.

Hugs

Beau, I can't believe u don't like Harvey. That is one of my favorite movies. I thought a sensitive guy like u would love it.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Jimmy, did I say I didnt like Harvey?  What I meant was I didnt like not seeing Harvey.   I loved Jimmy Stewart, and of course loved the rabbit, but didnt like his family trying to commit him to an asylum.  Maybe I'll watch it again and get a different perspective, and will probably love it more better.  Yeah, that's the ticket !

So far we have had 7+ eenches, and guts of wind up to 29 MPH.  Sure be glad to get this behind us by a month or so.  Talked to James Winborn class of 63 (Dianes cousin) they have had 14 eenches of rain. They live off Kickapoo road about 20 miles east of us off 290.

Heard from my son in Alaska. They were on one of the islands in the alutians, and they had a typhoon and had trouble getting the float plane in and out. They finally made it to Anchorage, and he will board a plane or has boarded a plane bound for Atlanta and then on to here...maybe.  Be glad to see him home again.  He's 47, but you never stop worrying about them do you!

Guess I'll sign off for now. Tired, but didnt do anything today except look at the radar and look out the window and take a dozen naps.

Keep the sun at your six and your Mae West handy...

Yikes! Houston is getting pummeled!   Rainfall for the last 24 Hours (before 8/27/2017 6:43 AM CDT):

You can check bayou status and rainfall totals for various time periods at https://www.harriscountyfws.org/   I see that parts of Oak Forest have received over 16" in the last 24 hours and that parts of Houston have already received over 28 inches in the last few days.  Stay safe!!
