Jimmie Sue, Fran and I just want you to know that we understand completely the combination of stress and worry and frustration you are going through making this transition with your mom. We have been on a similar journey with Fran's mom Margy who is 90, for the last two years, and intensely for the last year since she fell and broke her hip. We took her first to the hospital then a few days later to a rehab facility and subsequently transitioned into long term care. The first 6 months were rough, as we helped her learn how to live in a wheelchair and in an institutional setting, but now a year into it she is more stable and adjusted. We know that the march of time is inevitable for her, as it is for all of us, and that things will always change,  but at least for now it is manageable. And I should mention that we have been lucky to have the considerable help of Fran's sister Judy, who also lives in Houston.

All we can do is try to make their final years as dignified, comfortable, happy, and filled with love as possible.

One thing we have realized, at least in Margy's case, is that she had not really been around anyone her age in the last 10-15 years since her husband and sister and cousins and neighbors had passed away. Slowly we have seen social and psychological benefits of her interacting more with people her age. The big deals at her facility for her are dining three times a day and bingo 4 days a week. In the case of bingo she didn't want to try it because she and her husband had played for a long time and she was burned out. Then she finally tried it and now loves it. She will say, no I don't want to wear that outfit tomorrow, I want to save it for a Bingo day!

We realize all of their situations are different, but please know that we are with you on this journey, as others of our classmates are and have been.

Batman here...Batman?  Why yes Virginia, since I started out my first day in Pony League Baseball, at the American legion field, as BATBOY, instead of player,  stands to reason now after 70 years, I are Batman...

Well, maybe Tomahto Man..."Tomahto Tomahto man, I wanna be a Tomahto man...", or woids to that defect....

Jimmie lee, you are correct, aint no retirement for us...retardment maybe, but not retirement....but, that's ok, cause when most folks retire and quit and slow down, that's when you break down and shorten your days on this mortal whirld...with the goings on up here on Denali, I'll live forever...

Just thought I'd report, all's safe on the western front...I shot and killed one of the boys SS water bowls this morning...I swear, it looked like a skunk from the distance I sawr it in the light of my trusty boyscout flashlight...plus it was in the middle of the side of the back yard, totally out of place....there's one water bowl that wont hurt anyone thanks to me...
It was black on the sides and white down the middle...or so it loooked...well, it could have been a skunk, or a mountain lion...

Yup, it has been reported that a mountain lion was seen in the vacinity...no joke...I know we have a big bobcat, cause I have that ol boy on the game camera saying cheese...We had noticed that the last two weeks, we have seen no rabbits or any critters hanging around, and before, for the past year or so, this was bunny land...

Jack and Cooper have, no let me rephrase that, Jack has been acting peculiar the last two weeks, Cooper has been acting peculiar for the last 9 years...When Jack goes out, he lowers his head and the hair has been standing up the back of his neck, or at least the last t wo weeks...no bunnies, no armadillos, no skunks, nothing moving at all...

Next door neighbor, next door? Well, for out here, it's next door, even though it's a mile away...anyway, Chris said one of his calves was missing...and he mentioned the mountain lion...I thought he was funnin me and just pullin my leg, but he was serious.     I asked him how much the calf weighed, and he said 300 pounds ! ! !  That'd have to be some large pussy cat to make a haul like that....

It would have to drag it a long distance, because there were no buzzards hanging around the area...there was also no blood...but, he said the mama cow had her nose to tthe ground following a path where her baby might have been dragged along...

I thought I detected a problem, when I heard the mama bawling...they do that when the calves are taken away from them, bawl for two weeks...and since it wasnt time for them to be taken away, it was out of the ordinary...of course everything here is out of the ordinary....not me of course....

I must also report that I almost shot our scarecrow several times, and probably will before too long...Diane made a scarecrow out of one of my old pair of biboveralls and a denim shirt and red scarf....when we were fighting the nazis wind, released by them opening up the "Ark of the Covenant" and gale storm, )ha thought I'd throw that in (    the wind caught that ol scarecrow and blew him, it, along the fence line...

I caught the movement out of the corner of my eye, and pulled my 45 out ready to blast whatever it was...(I had the option of a 45 or 9MM, or my Rambo knife) but opted for my .45, since not much can stand up to it...I had the hammer back and ready to go, ready to defend to the death my beloved as she was out saving the whirlds ENTIRE ecological system....and the whirlds economic health,  all wrapped up in one stinkin tomato plant....

She, my beloved,  totally unaware of my heroism, fought the elements, (better than fighting elephants), as I, "CAPTAIN TOMAHTO MAN",  drew down on certain death, Jason? Michael Meyers? Frrrrahkenstein? Texas chainsawr masacre guy?

Nope, worse than all those combined...our scarecrow....well, he, it is scary sometimes...laying there, floppin in the wind, like scarecrows are want to do, scarin the bejeebers out of crows and real jumpy folks...not me you understand, but others....well, you stand out in gale storm force winds in the middle of a dark and stomy night, and see if you dont react to a scary crow guy coming at you...HA and ha...so there ! ! ! !!!!!

Cooper was outside witness to all the goings on, he can confirm everything I have said...and would too, if he could  talk...so, guess you'll have to take my woid for it....

Anyway, like I've reported, all's quiet on the western front...cept it's still sprinklin...idjit weather people said we were through with the rain, YESTERDAY....liar liar pants on fire...of course out here, not much could catch on fire with all the rain...well, that's ok...

Wee also put down 50 pounds of winter rye grass seed hoping that it would help the soil here, and help keep some of the errosion in check...well, we will see what we will see....

Ok, Tomahto Man has to sign off,  the coffee is perkin and the aroma of the bacon is wafting gently to and fro in our conestoga hut...

Keep the sun at your six, and your tomatos safe...

Rain, rain, and more rain! One thing that is a benefit from the deluge is that you can find all the leaks. So far just two. One at the hot water heater vent pipe and another that cause water to seep into the garage. I hope I pumped enough silicon caulk into a gap between the bricks and some weird decorative element to fix that one. Reminds me of the joke about the city guy who ask the mountain man," why don't you fix your roof brother?" The mountain man replies,"When it's raining, I can't. When it ain't, I don't have to." Beau's tomato rescue reminds me of the hurricane Beulah June 1954. I was at my grandparents house in the Rio Grande valley with my cousins. The winds were blowing and suddenly my younger cousin jumps up and runs outside. He had been keeping a eye on a bird nest on the patio. When it blew down he rescued the nest and the eggs and found a sheltered spot for them.

Tomahto Man, Beau, and all, did you know that Gale Storm (born name, Josephie Cottle) was from Houston?  Makes perfect sense now doesn't it?!  Her neice, Sharon Divine, was my childhood girl friend and we went to Thomas Jefferson Elem. together.  Here we are at the May Fete.  'Just something I happened to know.

Teddy and Fran, thank you for your words of wisdom.  The hardest thing has been taking small steps with leaded feet.  I always associated PTSD with our military and never with an event that could be so devestating to us common folks.  This has been one of the hardest things I have dealt with since I lost my husband in 1977 in an off shore drilling accident.  It has been a learning experience.  But with God's Grace and Guidence, I will make it through this chapter in my life.  Continued Prayers deffinatly appreciated.   Jimmie Sue

Gerry you are right.  My mother went to highschool in Houston, when there were only two highschools here.  Everytime "My Little Margie" came on she would anounce " Gale Storms was one of my girl friends".

There's a nice obituary in today's Chronicle for George Prappas, our old history teacher and coach at Black Jr. High. He was 89, a decorated WW II  veteran and Army sharp shooter in the Battle of the Bulge at the age of 18. He ended up teaching at Black for 11 years during which time he went to law school, then practiced law for the rest of his life. The picture shown looks just like I remember him, and I also remember his sharp sense of humor and his enjoyment of coaching.

Good News - Wayne Lake is leaving Methodist hospital today!!  He'll continue his recuperation at home in Aransas Pass.  We pray for his speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him at our Spring Fling in April!  We missed him at our Fall Fling which he was going to attend, but instead he had to make a detour and go to the hospital.

Keep on dancing, Wayne!

Hugs, J

Oh what I would give to be able to go back with maturity and perspective and a real interest in history, and have a chance to spend time each day in the class of someone who had been there and experienced it. Rest in peace Mr. Prappas.

I adored mr. Prappas.  I had the class with Ben vandenbossche and Allen Weinstein.  I have always been a history nut.  I used to talk with my daddy about mr. Prappas' class and what we were learning.  He thought it was funny that mr. Prappas used to wield a ruler while he wandered the classroom.  If he saw someone dozing or daydreaming he would slap the ruler on his desk and scare the student.  It was Ben a lot of the time.  You could tell that he really cared for his students.  He was a great teacher.  I'm glad he had a good life.  If I wasn't traveling I would go to the funeral.  We are in Kansas visiting a friend who has ALS.  Won't get back until Friday.

A bit more about area legend, Josephine 'Jo' Owaissa Cottle aka Gale Storm - 1922-2009. She lived for a time at 2813 Truxillo (near TSU & UH) and went to Albert Sidney Johnston Junior High School and San Jacinto High School. A friend of mine's mother dated her step-brother and was a good friend of Jo.  Jo went to the Hallie Pritchard School of Dance on Fannin. Ann Miller, Chandra Wilson, & Tommy Tune also went there. Besides being a good dancer, Jo was an excellent ice skater at Houston's Polar Wave Ice Palace and worked there. She has 3 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: recording (for her songs), radio, and TV.

What was the name of that show, and wasnt there a young girl like in it like his niece or something?   I guess I could look them up on you tube, but it's more fun talking to yall...

Beau, Penny was Gloria Winters.  The Bob Cummoings Show became Love That Bob and the guy that played Dobbie Gillis, Dwayne Hickman (?), played his nephew...lots of peoplw who went on to play more famous parts were in that show...Ann B. Davis (Brady Bunch), Nancy Culp (Beverly Hillbillies)...that's our flash back for today!

Scotty, thanks for your post about Stanley. I read it this morning on my phone while out of town on a brief hunting excursion and have been sad about it all day. Stanley was a good friend throughout Black and Waltrip and I've got a whole boatload of stories about the fun memories with him from those years. He was a great and fun loving guy. Stanley was a about a year and a half older than me and when he got his drivers license our adventure level went up big time.  I had just mentioned his name and one of those memories, and my interest in tracking him down and catching up with him, to Fran in the last week.

That makes the third old friend, all good, good men, I have lost in the last week. ( the other two were not classmates) Fran and I went to two visitations at the same funeral home at the same time one night last week.

As far as I can deduce there are three reminders to take way from this week. One is to consider every day as a gift and have fun, two is to show those that you love that love every chance you get, and three is to take the initiative and track down and reach out to long lost old friends while you still can ( In the case of all three that I lost this week I wish I had done a better job of that).

Beau Wann, Jr.

TJ,  Scotty, sorry about your loss of your friends...I dont know If I knew Stanley...my long term memory drive seems to be locked up...I've got a good memory, just short..very short...

You are so right TJ,  you gotta live like you're dying...someone made a song about that..."go skydiving, rocky mountain climbing, go 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu..." love your friends and family whenever you can...

Speaking of living, Jimmy Hilshire visited us today...what a very pleasant surprise...now, there's a very good man....he stayed for about an hour..two old men,  rockin in rockin chairs...talked about fishin and huntin...he caught about 30 bass in his sons pond...one was 6 pounds....I've never caught anything more than 1 pound, and only about 3 of em...but it was sure nice talkin about it.....absolutely made my day...made my week....

Right after he left, within a couple of minutes, one of the little doey eyed deah came to the feeder...rather early for supper, but they come and go whenever it suits em...

Speaking of a beautiful buck...old number 7 point came a calling this morning about 7 AM...whatt a beautiful creature...they are safe as long as they stay on our place....just thought you good folks would like to see some of the wildlife...I never tire of it, cant get enough of it....

I really liked Stanley.  He was a gentleman.

I have been learning about deer points; what is a point and what isn't yet.  We have herds of them all around.  We had a seven point in the ravine with his lady friends.  My dog was on one side of the fence and this beautiful creature was on the other.  Dog kept barking and running up and down the fence line.  Deer just watched and looked up at us every once and awhile.  The herd around here has gotten very big this year.  We came home very late one night and there were more than 10 walking down the street to see what we had planted.  They don't move quickly when we drive up.  They just slowly continue down the middle of the street like they own the place.  I,am not a hunter but I understand the need to cull the herd.  I just don't want to be the one doing it.  I will kill beer cans all day.

Wayne Lake

I am back……………………………….I lived through it and feeling pretty good, all things considered.

First of all, a respectful salute to all combat veterans out there, I hope you have a good day, you certainly deserve it.

Second, I agree with Teddie’s comments on reaching out as I missed seeing Spanky while he was living near the location where I grew up (sort of) on Sherwood Lane. I could kick myself for not trying harder as I think he probably needed a friend.

In case you missed it, I had open heart surgery two weeks ago and I am now home in Aransas waiting on the great white pelicans to arrive for winter. My house is still a mess but I love sitting on the back porch just doing nothing at all which is about all they will allow these days.

A bit of what happened to ol’ Wayne; I was diagnosed with left ventricle mitral valve regurgitation (medical term for leaky check valve) about 2 years ago but since I had no symptoms and was only leaking about 30%, the cardiologist and surgeon agreed that until the situation got worse, no surgery was required, so I stayed the course and took off for S.E. Asia on September 10th - Queensland Australia,
Bali Indonesia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Then while in Bali, about half way into the month long trip, I blew the valve out completely, could not breathe, sucking wind, could not sleep, could barely walk 100’ without resting, etc. We kept on our merry way for the rest of the entire trip, I just got to feeling worse and worse until I finally said enough and spent the last day of the trip in the hotel room in Hong Kong before traveling home on Oct 10th. When I finally saw the Cardiologist and Surgeon on Oct 16th and Oct 21st respectively, they both agreed that I had ‘busted’ the valve loose (medical term, his not mine) and it was flailing and leaking 60+%. Luckily, the ol' heart was in good condition (no heart disease/blocked arteries) and strong enough that I could still motivate but it was apparent, it needed repairing and the sooner the better. I was operated on Oct 28th by the same guy that repaired Barbara Bush’s broken heart and other famous/rich people (why they accepted me, only Henny knows - see below), but I am glad they did as the surgeon, Dr. Gerald Lawrie has literally written the book on heart valve repair (1600+ and counting with 99.5% success) and is world famous for it.  By the way, they repair the Cordes that hold the valve in place with Gortex thread, go figure, and gave me a 10 year parts and labor warranty.

Henny Banning has been like my own personal Saint, ‘Florence Nightingale’ throughout the entire process and I feel like she was at least partly responsible for my great outcome. She truly is a saint in every meaning of the word and I thank her from the bottom of my newly repaired heart. For those of you who may not know, Henny was Dr. Debakey’s surgical nurse for 25+ years (now called PA), knows all the players at Methodist and pushed all of the right buttons so that I got the same care as Saudia Princes and Babs Bush.

You see, I had started out at St. Luke’s but Jimmy Hilsher convinced me to check with Henny and see where I should be for the best care. Jimmy had sort of kept up with her and her career over the years as early on, he was an EMT driver for HFD and would run into her at Ben Taub where she was working in ER. She evidently got a job as nurse/translator with Dr. Debakey partly because she was fluent in Dutch (spent years 2-10 in Indonesia attending ex-pat Dutch schools there) - check out her bio on waltrip64.

Long story short, based on Henny’s referral, I went to see the 2nd generation Debakey team at Methodist, Dr. Mohammed Attar, the smartest, hardest working Cardiologist on the planet and Dr. Lawrie, the leading heart surgeon as described above.    I also owe a great deal of thanks to Jimmy for having me contact Henny and get the ball rolling at Methodist.

And finally (this has gone on way too long almost like an awards program), thanks to Jackie for the forum we all rely on and Teddie for the Fudd’s Tuesday get togethers that helped me get re-connected with Jimmy on a routine basis and by staying in close contact, he knew my health situation and convinced me reach out to Henny in a timely manner.

From Aransas with a totally new outlook on life, feeling like a very lucky guy with a new heart and the best of old friends,

wtl

ps: Reminds me of a line or song title by Dolly and Kenny Rogers; “you can’t make old friends”. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next fling ding as I was all set to go in October but did not have the where-with-all to attend.
