Teddie Jordan

It was so hot here today I saw a lizard carrying a parasol and wearing flip flops!!!!

Pat Brantley (Ross)

Thank you for the close-up photo, Teddie.  My grandchildren have never seen most of our beautiful lizards and toads because my daughter is even less an outdoor woman than me.  Has everyone taken the summer off from the forum?  I am recovering from a broken hand.  What's the excuse for the rest of you?  Beau?

I know we all grew up calling them horny toads, and daughter Lisa went to TCU and is a horned frog for ever, but the correct name is horned lizard, and it is my favorite reptile. Old friend and business partner Dick Weinland took that great picture on our place several years ago.

I will always call them hornie toads.  I remember my daddy telling me I could catch them as long as I let them go that night.  That's what shoe boxes were for.  He told me they would grow up to become dinosaurs if I let them.  I think I believed that longer than I should for the same reason as Santa.

Hey myne fyne waltripynes...just been weatherin the weather...106 today...heat index 118...wow it's hot...last winter I was saying "come on summer", and in the spring i was saying "stop raining"...now, "come on winter and we sure could use some rain...

Pat, what'd you do to your hand?   You're not supposed to get injured !

Horned toads ! ! ! Havent seen one of those in a coons age...hells bells, not since the jurasic period have I seen one of those bad boys...I remember when I was 6 or 8, one of the wild bunch found a hornd toad and put it in a bucket and gave it some beer...(I wasnt yet a member of the wild bunch, being of such a young and tender age).  Anyway, they named it Alvin, I think, and them and Alvin all got drunk! ! !     I probably had a 6oz coke!

I'm finally learning to just take er easy. I have a zillion and one projects !  I do a little on one, and then just go in the house and sip on a mint julip or sweet tea, whichever comes foist.

Most of the pain has subsided, in the daytime, cept when i turn wrong, but all in all I'm swell!  Night time is another matter, but still not as bad as before, and I'll take that anyday.  Mostly been settin on the porch, sippin an adult beverage, watching the little doey eyed deah.  Havent seen any fawns on our place this summer. think I got some earlier this spring, but they may have fallen prey to the torrential rains or predators, or both.  TJ says that 75% of fawns dont survive, and even after that, there are still a lot of deah out there!

Got some hog trappers out hear last saturday eenin...voila, no hogs...deah have come back to the feeder, yea!!!!  The three bucks I've dubbed "the three amigos" have come back. Ones a 4pt, ones a 6pt and the big boy is a 7 point. All still in velvet, and growing outside the ears, and still growing! I hope no one shoots one of them.

Did I mention I opened up a new account at the chappell hill bank?  Yup, just for mad  money ! Well, when I opened it up, they gave us a prize...a watermelon...yup, thats what you get when you bank in a small country town, not a toaster, not some ginzu knives,  but a WATERMELON...Well, I'm gonna make some watermelon wine...that oughta be fun !  Last time I made watermelion wine, it was good, but potent. Took a week for the buzzing in my head to clear up! That was ok, cause it was harmonizing with the ringing in my ears.

This heat has frahed mah brain...so guess I'll sing off. Anyways, my beloved and my grandaughter are on their way here, after shopping for the last 6 hours. Talking to them now, and they didnt even get me a present of any kind...I knead the presence of a present !

Keep the sun at your xis and the Air Conditioning up full blast, and ride boldly ride...

Correction on the weather report for yesterday...107 yesterday about 5 pm...ok, that's enough now, stop it ! ! !

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

Yep, BroBeau, we are all in agreement --- IT"S HOT here in Texas!!!  Cool off with your watermelon!

Pat hope you are doing better and on the mend, I'm like BroBeau how did you break your hand?

Horny toads - that brings back memories growing up and fishing at Lake Travis and they were all over the place.  Weird looking critters - mini dinosaurs!

Everyone have a good weekend and stay coooooooooooooooool!

Hugs, J

Jan Barnes '65 (Nimtz)

It's good to hear from you, Beau. I'm glad you're feeling better at least in the daytime. I'm also glad the topic has changed to something other than guns and snakes. I personally do not have anything against guns. However I do not like snakes of any kind. Is anyone going to post vacation pictures? Or even "stay"cation pictures? Or is it just too hot to go anywhere? We made a day trip to New Braunfels earlier today. That is all of one hour from here (Boerne). It was 100 degrees when we left NB and was 72 degrees and raining when we got home. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

08/01/15 07:16 AM #7237

Teddie Jordan

You had to get up early to feel it, but there was a whisper of fall in the air this morning from the puff of a front that moved through yesterday. It obviously is just a hint, but is the Good Lord's message to all of us in Texas to hang in there, and  that fall is on the way. In six weeks we will be getting more cool weather and another Houston summer will be history! ( I'm kind of like the ground hog, the first morning I walk out to get my newspaper about 5AM and feel that hint of fall, there's only six more weeks of barely bearable heat and humidity.)

I will try not to rub it in, but it's 66 right now on the porch of the cabin. Slept under a blanket last night in warm pajamas. We managed to get out of the Texas heat for a couple of weeks before my husband has back surgery. At Jan's encouragement I will try to post a couple of pics from God's country. They will be on my profile bc I am not techy enough to attach them here using my phone. Ah well!

Come to Lake City, bring your fishing pole and a jacket plus a good hat. An invitation is always open! Might want to bring a sleeping bag, too, and an air mattress since we are getting older and, I don't know about you, but I can't handle the floor for sleeping anymore.

So glad you are feeling better, Beau. Take care of that back. Like Jan, I am happy the subject has changed! I dealt with way too many snakes growing up in the country. Shouted, "Momma get the hoe!!!", way too many times.

Susan, Thanks for posting the new photos. Your cabin certainly is in God's country. The surroundings are breathtaking! Enjoy! The updated photos of kids and grandkids are priceless! Enjoy them too... each and every one.

This is Diane in her class room...this looks like my 1st grade class at Travis Elem. way back yonder in 1851...You'll be pleased to note, that my beloved is retiring from the classroom after 38 years, August 31 of this year...that makes her a short timer...29 days and a wake up....

Here's probably the highlight of our summer, since we have no vacation home to go to, and we both cant go on vacation together, too many critters to take care of. We havent been on vacation together since 1992...
the first picture is of course Pegasus all duded up for the fourth of july parade...next one is a line of longhorns ridden by some mighty brave folks...next is my beloved and soon to be fellow retiree standing next to a real live over a hunert year old chuck wagon...belonged to Lonnie Teaglers great grand father...all the above is from this years 4th of july parade in Chappell Hill, Tx. 77426....

Teddie Jordan

Congratulations Diane, you so deserve your retirement and you will love it!

And thank you for your service. In my book teachers are real heroes, right up there with our military personnel, our police and fire and first responders, and our nurses and health care professionals. They all do jobs of upmost importance to us and our country, and too often with inadequate recognition, compensation, or appreciation!

As the sign on the outfield wall of our old pony league baseball field on Judiway said, no person stands taller, than one who stoops to help a child!

okay, this is how I broke my hand, but no laughter.  I get very little real exercise since I don't have a Pilates class.  A principle of ballet and Pilates is core body conditioning so I still refuse to get dressed sitting down or holding on to anything nearby.  I started losing my balance while getting into my jeans.  I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands and wrists so I stopped myself from extending my hand Palm flat.  I fell onto the backside of my hand.  Left hand of course since I am left handed.  My signature has looked like a drunkened sailor.  Hand is mending.

We got none of the rain that boerne received.  We are back into stage I water restrictions.

08/03/15 07:29 AM #7246

Beau Wann, Jr.

HEY....PAT...I RESEMBLE THAT "DRUNKEN SAILOR" REMARK ! ! ! !  We were just practicing our handwrithing...drinking all that booze, but it was GOOD booze...most of the time! Ever now and again, as I recalletaremember, we did sample the fine wine departmen t...does Boones Farm Strawberry hill, Ripple and  Thunderbird fall in the fine wine catamagory?  We always added strawberry Koolaide, for whatever festive occasion had arisen, like the sun going down, the sun coming up etc...sometimes we'd add hard liquor to the Ripple...we called it Kripple....then you'd see some celebratin....

I'm still into ballet, having to hold onto something, anything to get dressed...I DO NOT, WANT TO FALL ON THE FLOOR...breaking my hand or whatever else, would just add injury to injury, and even if I didnt break anything, I'd have to call 911 to have someone come and get me off the floor, but then, I'd have to try to find 911s telephone number, who can remember tele numbers nowadays anyhoo, and we dont have any phonebooks, I recycle em soon as they come out, so there you go ! ! !

I could wear the MENS ballet tights...and look good too...me being of sound mind and supple body...or cripple body....I can leap...well, guess that would require a "leap of faith" , but you could conjure up that image in your imagination ah reckon ! ! !   Ok, I wont go there...oops, too laate...

I cant wait for Diane to retire ! ! ! Then she can get another job, and make more money ! ! ! Nah, just funnin ya...It'll be nice to have someone to talk to for a change...the dogs and cats are not very good conversationalists I'm here to tell you...great listeners, but not much for talkin ! ! !

Speakin of horned frogtoadlizzards, we have a plethora of green tree frogs...now, that might not sound to amazing, but we have no trees, at least closer than 50 yards to the house...and praying mantisisisisisisis....whatever ! ! ! ! You can go to the glass back/side door and open up the blinds, and voila, there's a green slimy treefrog stuck to the glass! !! ! ! They are sorta cute, sorta, in a green slimy tree frog sorta way...

howbout a vacation picture????

Close enough...how can that be, "any seat, 5 and 15 cents" ???? which is it, 5cents, or 15 cents???? Wonder which jewelry store that is next to the theater....maybe it's Paul Boschs....

Remember going to the heights?  The heights was uptown, and downtown was was, well,  "downtown", duh! ! !
the "heights", was really fun, but "downtown", was "dressup time"...prolly wore my gaberdine suit from Foleys...I have a question....what is gaberdine????? is there an animal called the "gaber"? sorta like naugahyde comes from the "nauga"...."when them cotton balls get a rotten, you  cant pick very much cotton, in them ole cotton fields back home....." I know where cotton comes from,  Target !!!!!

Ok, gee, it's been lovely chattin with all yall...but gotta go do stuff....
keep the sun at your xis preferably behind a cloud, a thick cloud, and ride boldly ride...

Beau, Townes VanZant sang a wonderful song about Thunderbird.  I never tasted it, but if it was as awful as boone's farm --- well, I don't have to do it.

Susan, your photos are great.  Where is lake city?  Which state?  I miss the weather in Salt Lake City sometimes, but then I remember the drawbacks to not being home.  My older daughter Amy was born in salt lake on May 2nd.  It snowed on May 4th that year.  i hope Teddie is right about our heat spell being over in 6 weeks.

Pat, Lake City is in Colorado. It's 50 miles south of Gunnison, which is about 150 miles sw of Colorado Springs. It's a beautiful little town of 450 year round residents, bit swells to many more, mostly Texans, in the summer. The altitude is 8700 ft, and our cabin is 9000. My parents blessed our family with this place many years ago. I guess you could say it was their legacy to us.

I know gunnison well.  My family used to spend vacations skiing.  We have traveled all over Colorado, but not lake city.  It looks fantastic.  Wonderful heritage from your parents.

Susan, great photos...love your cabin...and the location.  Cloudcroft NM is about 9000 feet, give or take...I went through there in july of naught 7 or 8 or 9, doesnt matter...what I noticed, was the flag at the post office was standing straight out headin south...got there about 7 AM, coming from the beautiful drive from Alamagordo...Needed a jacket...in July....beautiful place.

If I ever got up there again, or where you live, or montana etc, I'd never  come back...much as I love Texas, guess I could love it from afar...

Remember how I was excited about my back pain easing up? No drugs?   Well, it has come back with a vengeance this week....upper and lower, and feels just like it did when I broke it...dont know what I did to hurt it this time, I've pretty much slowed down to a crawl lo these last couple O months....it hurts to move, even to breathe...

ol doc Frahnkenschtein said he could put some plates and rods and screws and nuts and bolts in mah back, but still couldnt guarantee that it would be better...well, duh, thats a no brainer...I'm just gonna leave it alone...if I already hurt, then why would I want someone hackin on me and make it worse...

I'm a thinkin, that this episode is a blessing in disguise, howsomever,  because I was going to rent a walkbehind brush hog this week,  and get to the places the tractor cant go, and with the temps forecast at 103 and higher, it will be at least 111 here, or higher.  So now, working outside is out of the question...see there how things seem to work out for the best! ! !

Still I could have used a little less drastic way to keep me inside!  Maybe a text msg from beyond...a voice in my punkin head...."hey dufus, dont go outside and work because it's gonna be hot and you'll fry..." you know, something like that ! !   I generally obey the voices in my head ! !

Now, I'll just have to lay around and sip mint julips or sweet tea, or lemonade...oh darn, if I must, I must! ! !
Maybe watch a few movies...yesterday they had on a few of my favorite ones, Song of Bernadette, Mrs. Miniver, The best years of our lives, Pride of the yankees....I forget I can record those movies without using tape or DVD, just tell it to record this or that, and it will...

So if anyone wants to come over and sip on some cool refreshments with me, and perhaps look at me sadly and say "tsk tsk" , then yall come...havent swept the floor today, so it has plenty O hay and clods O dirt scattered about, but maybe, when youse youtes get here, YOU can sweep....ha, see how this is all working out ! ! ! Hey Johnny, if you want to t ake a break from the snake farm there, come on over...you can wrangle frogs and crickets and grasshoppers....

Shucks and I almost forgot, I've got to feed the horses and bulls and keep tabs on their cattle at two ranches  for the next couple of weeks for some friends up here, starting Thursday or Friday, so I'd better get right real quick...

Ok, time to sing off...keep the sun where it's suppose to be, behind a cloud, and ride boldly ride...

Post Script:  Hey Jackie, we love you ! ! ! Yup we do, can you feel it?   It's headed your way, all the time ! ! !
