After getting a Bachelor's from UT Austin and a Master's and Ph.D. in British Literature from the University of Houston, I taught English at Houston Community College and gave workshops in creative writing, creativity, and meditation. In 1991 I moved to the place that best fit me--the San Francisco Bay Area. I am now teaching humanities and interdisciplinary courses in the Cal State System (CSU Maritime).
In high school I was determined to be a writer (and was elected Senator of the Imperial Guard for that reason). I wrote the lyrics for "The Guard Song," which I was surprised to hear sung at a Guard reunion. (Cathy Parker wrote the tune.) My mother told me to get teaching credentials because writers might not make a living. She was right! I found I love teaching, and academic writing is much easier to get published than novels.
