Hey Johnny one more snake tip and then I'll shut up. On big rattlesnakes like the one your neighbor saw the snake boots and chaps will do the trick on most of them, but as with all snakes you just have to be careful where you reach  with your hands. They all live on the ground and their striking range is limited by their body length and physics.

A number of years ago I had the chance to talk to a man who is a professional live snake handler and goes all around the country putting on shows and exhibitions with a bunch of big live rattlesnakes. I asked him the highest they can strike? He said about 80% of the big snakes will hit you below the knees, but that the other twenty percent will go for your belt buckle! Not coincidentally that is the same day I bought my first cast iron jock strap!

Here's a picture from two years ago of classmate Lynn Prewit with a healthy specimen of western diamondback rattlesnake from south Texas. As you can tell from the bare ground it was an extremely dry year and you could see the snakes. This year with all of the rain that same spot and the entire ranch is covered with and ocean of grass and weeds three feet tall. The snakes are still there and are prospering , you just can't see them very well until you're right on top of them.

Here's ya a big tom kitty... I'll bet he could stop all that snake nonsense....or, get yursef a couple O hawgs...hawgs love snakes and eat em with gusto...you cant poison a hog...and snakes know what hogs look like, and are afeared of em, sort of like putting up an owl decoy to keep the varmints out of your garden and ofin yore porch...

Like these fine fellows..."oh yeah, we love snake souffle, bring them bad boys on" ...remember if you killed an odd number of copperheads, they travel in pairs...look out for number 6.....
I keep the grass cut so short around the house all the way out to a hundred yards in front, and all the way to the tree line in back, about 50 yards....that usually works as a deterrent to keep the critters out, cept rabbits...but I dont mind them so much...they dont make much noise, and will generally not eat EVERY thing youve planted...

I am so happy for you henny.

All of this discussion about snakes is interesting.  they don't frighten me.  I didn't enjoy killing the copperheads in my jasmine bed, but I did it to protect my dogs.  I've never seen a coral snake in the wild, but then again, I don't live in the wild.  My cat won't even try to kill a cricket, so I think I have a princess.  My dog would determine whether or not it was food and then leave.  Barn cats are wonderful, but with beau in the house they would be in the bed and not patrolling the barn.  He seems to raise the same royal animals that I do.  We have coyotes in our neighborhood and one beautiful fox that we see occasionally.  When we lived on the comal river there were always nests of moccasins nearby, but they weren't a problem.  If I lived on enough land to have snakes I think I would get some pigs.  You could get those cute miniature pigs, beau.  That way if they needed to be in the house it would be okay.  (See my mind at work.  Every creature can be a pet).

Oh Pat...!!! You are so funny, I love it! But real life is funnier than made up, isnt it!   yeah, there are pets, and then there are royal pets, royal FAT pets...I passed on to Johnny about getting hogs or pigs...they really do keep the sanke population in check.   We had one hog show up on our game camera, oncet (east texas for once) last year, and then again this year. I guess you could say he was our annual hog....just checked the game camera, and it appears that Mr Razorback, has a missus...and they have about a dozen little piglets.  All getting fat on our corn and sweet feed...

got a shot of mama, and she is a huge shaggy lady....wish I could get a shot at a couple O "them little piggys went to the deah feeder" The hogs that young has the sweetest and redish meat.  Hmmm yum! Almost no fat for youse healthy eaters...

Diane sawr them and said, " oh look, that one looks just like your cousin..." "NO" says I, "dont go naming them, we'll neverr be able to get rid of them. We'll have get em braces, and buy them all cars when they turn 16, get em prom dresses and tuxes, put em through college, get em married off, go through their divorces, move em back home....NO NO NO ! ! !

A year ago or so, when the wild life lady, Theresa, came out, she said there were no hogs in Washington county....hmmm, yall want to back a bet I'm gonna make with her and her collegues...(is that spelled right? doesnt look right, well, ok, we'll go with that spelling for now)?

The ranchers and farmers around here, are not going to be happy when they see my pictures !   Of course, they're gonna say, "STOP FEEDING THEM"...I'm not, just feeding the little doey eyed deah ! ! ! The three amigos come by twice a day, three bucks that hang around together, at least until the rut, then they will start fighting for the ladies of their choice...hopefully the strongest gened buck will win.  Then spring comes, the bucks will shed their antlers in march, and the bambi's will be springing forth. Of course according to our little doey eyed deah expert, TJ, 75% will not make it!

ok, again congratulations to Henny and Roric...their happiness is contagious isnt it!

time to sing off for now...but, "I'LL BE BACK" ! ! !
From beautiful downtown Chappell Hill, Texas 77426, weather center, temp 83, feels like 88, humidity 73 percent, wind out of the south at 5 MPH...
Your frien and brother-in-classmate...Robert E. Lee Wanninski...(everyone up here is polish, so gotta fit in if I can) (and they're all related)....

Howdy all. It's been awhile since I've posted anything. I was planning to be at Fudd's tomorrow but after reading about all the snake encounters I want some assurances that one of you kind hearted souls hasn't made sweet little Fang your new pet . If you have I don't want to meet him or her! The infrequent encounters in the wild are more than enough.

Beau, I really like your snake killer. I wondered how long it would be before you had one on your hill top. I think dispatching several if not all of those piggies would be a great idea for a bar-b-que.

Well it's time to get back to working. I trust I'll see everyone tomorrow without any pet snakes.

Stay calm & carry on

Rich

Johnny, Can't tell for sure from the picture if that last one was a copperhead, but damn sure is a vivora and under the circumstances better safe than sorry.

Sorry my snake chaser is upside down.  I am sure that she would yawn at a snake in her territory.
