I am in Houston since last Tuesday, so I just assume where I live is OK. The drive in last Tuesday was horrible. The torrential rain was from Elgin to Brenham. Everything good in Houston if I can get to Med ctr. tmo for pet scan.

Am hoping everyone is safe.

Teddie Jordan

We spent this past weekend down in Port Aransas with daughter Nicole and her family, and a good time was had by all. The boys got up early Saturday morning and went fishing and we caught speckled trout and redfish. The girls fished in the local shops and also got their limits.

Then Sunday morning we had a interesting experience. Curt and Jordan went for an early morning walk on the beach which is just a 5 minute walk from the house where we stay.  A little way down the beach Curt noticed two men doing something over by the the sand dunes and being a cop and a detective went over to investigate. It turns out that a female Kemp's Ridley sea turtle had come ashore overnight and was attempting to climb to the top of a very steep sand dune to lay her eggs, but kept sliding back down about half way. Curt texted us back at the house and Nicole and I left immmediately to watch. Unfortunately grandson James was not feeing well that morning so Fran stayed at the house with him.

The man who discovered her early that morning immmediately called the number of a local turtle rescue and first responder organization, ARK, and when we got there one of their first responders was already on scene and was shoveling out a flat spot for her about half way up and next to where she was resting. When he finished she inspected and approved the spot and began digging a hole with her rear flipppers and started laying her eggs. Over about an hour and twenty minutes she layed what turned out to be over 100 eggs. When finished she started covering them up  by using her rear flippers to rake the sand back in. She then started about a twenty minute process of packing the sand down over them. She would amazingly lift herself up on all four flippers then rock and slam back down on the lower plate of her shell to pack the sand. She continued doing this in a 360 degree circle until she had about a four foot diameter circle of sand tighly packed and as smooth as could be. She was a beautiful creature, about 2 1/2 feet in diameter and weighed as estimated 70-80 pounds.

At this point the volunteers, led by a delightful gray bearded British gentleman named Tony Amos, a real character and as it turns out a noted marine scientist, admitted beach bum, and long time resident of Mustang Island, lifted her up from the nest and placed her on the lift gate of a pickup truck and proceeded to tag her, measure her, and do a medical evaluation including taking a biopsy.

They then carried her about half of the150 yards back toward the surf  and put her down and let her crawl the rest of the way. She was totally exhausted and would crawl a short distance, then stop and rest, then resume. But when she finally got close enough that she could see and hear and smell the surf she kicked it into another gear and sprinted the rest of the way on her four flippers until she could swim away. By this time it was about 11:00 AM and a fairly large crowd had assembled. We cheered, and I'll admit that I teared up and got emotional as she swam out of sight. I've been a lover and observer and student of wildlife my entire life, and have witnessed some pretty special and unusual animal behavior, but this was a singular, unique and special experience. The Kemp's Ridley is a critically endangered species and is said to be the rarest sea turtle in the world. This was also the first one to be spotted on Mustang Island this year and one was also  found laying eggs on Matagorda island that morning. What are the odds that one would pick that popular and busy beach on a holiday weekend and a spot ten minutes from our house? Thank you Lord!

After she swam out of sight the volunteers returned to the nest which they had marked, and carefully dug up the eggs. They then were to be taken to a special hatchery on South Padre where they will be incubated and hatched. Then when the little ones are a few days old they will be brought back to this exact same spot and released to crawl back into the Gulf. They have a system whereby you can track their incubation, progress and  release date, and I'm thinking about going back down to watch them be released. If I do you'll know it because I'll be passing out little turtle cigars as a proud papa at the following Fudd's get together!

I apologize for the rotation of the one picture, and I've got a great video of her sprinting the last yards back into the water, and also Mr. Amos, but somehow the formating of my phone or something is not  accepted by this website so I will continue to work on getting that, but what I know about IT you could inscribe on the head of a pin. It says I need an URL and I don't even know anybody named Earl.

We live on a hill in new braunfels so we're high and dry during the worst of the storms.  There is a deep ravine in my backyard so I watched a great deal of water run past on its way to the Dry Comal Creek.  We went to kerrville Monday morning to visit a friend in the hospital.  The river up there was flooding.  On Tuesday we emptied our closets of unneeded clothing and took it to San Marcos for the flood victims at the emergency shelter.  Those poor people left their homes with what they could carry in a suitcase.  Some of our family in Houston have damage - ron's sister has a leaky roof and his nephew has lost his car when it drifted away on west main.  He was not in the vehicle.  He was at dfw waiting to be able to fly into Houston.

Teddie, what a wonderful experience.  So glad you got to see it.  I hope beau and Diane are safe.

There have been no reported occurancies of flooding around the Canyon Lake area.  The lake level has risen significantly from a normal level of 909 ft. to a current level of 925 ft. as posted by the C.O.E. since the rains have started.

Another storm passed through yesterday and a reported tornado touchdown near Twin Sisters in Blanco County was observed.

Meanwhile, the ground remains soaked and the mosquitos are very bad.  Still more rain in the forcast and everyone is keeping their fingers crossed hoping to see the sun once again.

Teddie,

Your adventure in Port Aransas was truly a once in a lifetime event.  Thanks so much for sharing your story - it was so interesting.

Hope everyone is staying safe!  We are being blessed with the end of a long term drought, but in the process, the flooding has brought many difficulties for many folks.

Well, here it is Frahday, and the sun is shining like a "red rubber ball"...Ah here tell that we have beautiful sunrises and sunsets on this here hill...sure would like to see one or a million...

goodness, we have been hammered day and night up here...damage only to our road...I say "only", it aint cheap maintaining a road ! ! ! Glad everyone is ok, leaast I hope everyone is ok...

Diane and I are shell shocked with all these violent storms...when we see it's going to be a particularly nasty event, we load up the center hallway with supplies, flashlights batteries, water, snacks, pillows and blankets, and a chair for me of course, our scratchy radio, our IDs so they can identify the bodies shouls worst come to worst, plus two terrified dogs, and three pissed off cats, the family bible, and a partridge in a pear tree...

I read to Jack and Cooper from the bible, starting with the 23rd psalms of course, and move on from there !  Cant tell if it does them much good, other than hearing the sound of my voice. The cats could care less, they hollar incessantly all through the storm, howling and hissing and spitting...ok, next time I'm not taking them in the hallway, they can just fend for themselves, the ingrates ! ! !

To say we are weary is putting it mildly ! But at worst, our nerves are frayed, at best, we're still here ! No water in the house like down in the flatlands, no loved ones missing, no damage to house or car, and for that we are truly greatful ! ! !

Pat, thanks for thinking of us...

Yeah teddie, great adventure you witnessed...I like nature too, cept for spiders and snakes...got to witness a
T-A-R  A-N  T-U-L-A sunning hisownself on our screened in porch...how he or it got there I have no idear...I emptied a whole can of wasp spray on his fuzzy ugly black self. Finally he fell off the screen, then I smashed him with shovel, again and again and again, till theree wherent nothing left of him....of all the creatures God has made, I think he left this one up to satan....I hate even thinking about those ugly things, let alone looking at one...

And as luck would have it, up shows another one in the yard just outside the porch...probably the mate looking for revenge...I didnt have a shovel or hoe or anything to hit it with, and I was all out of wasp spray, but I did have my .45 pistol, so I emptied a clip on that ugly fuzzy monster...I'm a pretty good shot, and I will say the first shot blew him to smithereens, and probably the next 7 shots were a bit of overkill, but when youre dealing with tarantulas, aint no such thing as overkill! ! !

One of the neighbors  called to see if that was me shootin, and just what I was shootin at, wolves? coyotes? bobcats? rabid skunks?   nope, much worse...TARANTULAS..."my goodness, how big was it, you shot half dozen times or more" says he!    "Big enough" says I, "Big enough"...

I know, i know, I'm sure there's someone that loves the little darlins, but I aint one of em!   They say, they are not poisonous, that's what they say...but I am not going to let one of em bite me just to prove a point.

NO SIR, NO FREAKIN TARANTULAS ALLOWED....I hope they're on the endangered species list...and check out soon ! ! !

I cant believe the sun is shining like it is...havent seen that in some time...crazy weather for sure, and deadly and destructive...

ok, time to deplane...Ive been on here half dozen times, and posted that many times, only to lose connection, so I'm gonna try er again...here goes....

Wayne - I really enjoyed reading dead wake.  I like Erik Larsen (except his anti gun book).  I would recommend paul Collins book "the murder of the century".  It has more to do with the battle between Hearst and pulitizer over New York newspapers than murder.  Historically interesting glimpse of life in New York city at the turn of the century.

Howdy  ! ! !   It's early, could'nt sleep, nothing gnu...hmmm, thought I had stuff to tell, but apparently knot ! ! !  Rain rain and more rain...and after it was such a sunny day too...well, at least we got some sun ! ! !

Closing out our antique booth tomorrow, er, today. All the good stuff has sold, just mostly junque left.  If Cooper is up to it, we will take him in for one last tour around the place. He so loves meeting and greeting people at the antique mall, and anywhere really......

His hips are getting weaker and it's getting harder and harder for him to get up and down.  I have to take a rug for him to lay down on so that he can get traction for when he gets up.  If the floor is tile or concrete, his big ol feet just slide, and it takes two of us to get him up.    He's 11 now ! ! ! Which makes him 77 in people years. 7 years older than I am. I seem to be having the same problem, getting up and down! ! !

Sure hope the rain has ended like they say it has.  Nothing but sunshine...and 90 gredee weather. That's fine with me. Gonna take a week of sun to dry us out. Drove down to the gate last night to lock it, and water was pouring over the road. Seems our culverts just cant handle that much  water.  Anymore of that, and our road will wash away, and we wont be able to get out, and no one can get in!   Then we'll be in a pickle ! ! ! A sour pickle !

Well, guess I'll sing off...nothing much to add...lots O pain...trying to manage it without drugs, just aspirin and tylenol. Days are bad enough, but it's the night I dread...I take my pills, and diane packs me in hot rice socks...I fall asleep for a few minutes, then start moaning and groaning about the time Diane gets to sleep, wake her up, and fight to go back to sleep, all to no avail...so I generally sit up all night channel surfing and trying to read.

Ok, I believe I was going to sign off, and this probably wont post anyway, internet connection flakey, so maybe you wont have to read this stuff...so...keep the sun at your six, or wherever you can find it, and ride boldly ride...

me...

Jan, I don't think I ever had the pleasure of meeting you but I certainly have your husband.

Ed, yes I remember you.  I remember talking to you right before you left Bechtel.  You had blueprints in your hand heading to the hill country to build your dream house. Sorry I never connected the dots between you and Jan.

I can't wait to see both of you at the 65 class reunion.

Cooper

have you all tried Rimadyl. we have used it on our dogs with arthiritis. it will help for a while. take care of him.

06/07/15 09:38 AM #7144

Teddie Jordan

John you are right, I've used Rimadyl successfully with my last three Labs as they aged. It is especially helpful with arthritis symptoms, and I used it for months to alleviate pain in my buddy Boomer who was dying with cancer in a foreleg when he was twelve. At age ten Gus gets to where he can barely walk after a hunt or other strenuous activity, but  with half of a Rimadyl for a couple of days he's back in business.

06/07/15 09:34 PM #7145

Beau Wann, Jr.

We're down to our last Rimadyl...gotta get a refil...we have been giving Cooper an Adequan shot once a month in one of his hindlegs, round the hamstring, if he had one. It's a pretty big muscle.  He still has trouble getting up, and cant get up at all if the floor is slick. I carry around a piece of carpet for him to lay on and to help him get up. I still have to pick his hind in up...He's pretty heavy for an old dog, but he is a couch potatoe...We walk him some, and he wanders around the portion of an acre we have fenced in, but generally he just lays down. He's 11, which equals 77 in human years, so they say!

Just watched a herd of deah walk across our place..saw at least 3 bucks, probably more, but lost the light! Counted a dozen, but probably morethan that.  Lots of fireflies...just love the wwildlife...

what kind of rabbit is this, Jackrabbit? This is just a few miles west of us on Robert and Sharon Hoppens place.  Ours have shorter ears and are brown...

of course here is Bambi...moma is just to it's left off picture

here are 3 of the bucks we saw this evening...
Just thought I'd share with youse youtes what we get to witness...

Thanks Jackie...I dont recollect ever seeing wildlife in my youte...lots O fireflies though ! ! !

Hey Pat, books finally arrived at samwann hill today.  I've already started reading both...Thank you so much, how very thoughtful...I just love receiving packages in the mail...My beloved knows this, so she always orders some bauble or trinket, or cigars or something,  for me to enjoy. I enjoy the package almost as much as the contents...silly me ! ! !

When we were youtes, most packages came in brown paper tied up with string...love to hear the sound of the paper krinkleing...oh, and I love the sound parchment makes when it is rustled about...doesnt take much to amuse me now does it...

Ok time to go do more stuff...

Keep the sun at your six and ride boldly ride...

Jan Barnes '65 (Nimtz)

This is what I read from Troy on Facebook earlier today...

"Today has been a long day for me! If anybody knows me they know how close I am with my dad. He had prostate cancer and had a successful surgery today. We go to games together, watch movies, and he's always there when my kids need help with math. I love my dad very much and I pray he has a quick and easy recovery!"

It sounds like it was his dad rather than Troy who had the surgery.

Pat Brantley (Ross)

Jan, Troy lL.  Is the son.  He is talking about his dad - our classmate.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Pat. I must have been having a senior moment... one of many.

Fuddrucker pictures are posted  under "Fuddrucker/Houston by Year" and more pictures added for Coach Burton's dedication in Waco under "Football Dedications 2015-2008) tab on left.

Jan, you were not the only one confused because our Troy is Troy L Holiman on FB and his son is Troy Holiman on FB which I discoverd soon after Scotty made his post!

Hugs,

J
