Wayne Lake

Jan, you make my mouth water talking about those little baked pie crust left overs with cinnamon and sugar on top. Like yours, my Mom made chocolate and lemon meringue pies nearly every week it seems and there was always extra pie crust for her baby boy.

Steve and Burge, I never cared for syrup although I do remember the log cabin and aunt Jemima containers– I think we always had local honey and I still try to use same wherever I am. I had some old friends from deep East Texas that liked buttermilk with their cornbread – yuk.

So Paige, if there was a QB for an NFL team with last name Luck that had a horse shoe logo on the helmet, would that also qualify for “disambiguation”?

Beaucephus, Fargo is the capital of North Dakota but close to the MN line.

We drove North of the twin cities this weekend to as state park to hike and the small lake in the park is connected to a major lake called Milacs which is the location/basis for ‘grumpy old men’.  This lake in the park is also the head waters for the Rum River. I think I’ll get a canoe for this kind of activity as the fishing appears to be great and the scenery also.

I am home sick for the salt air and miss my boat. Brrrrrrrrrr, it’s getting cold up here, time to head South with the birds.

Still from Lake Wobegon,

Yes, may all have happy birthdays...
hey WTL, come on down...the heaters on down here. Got some rain yesternight...cool air to follow...Me and Cooper have school today at Lamkin in cy fair...Coop knows too...he's been standing around grinnin! Ever now and again, he lets out a loud "RUFF", just so I know he knows...

Krogers carries local honey from Alvin...you can get some other bee dudes honey at any and all the "fairs", and "first Saturdays"...one in Bellville comes to mind. Diane and I usually ride the MC to that one. Cant carry much back, and thats the idea. Got just enough room for some jewelry for my "Honey", and some honey for my biscuits...

I have decreed today as NATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET YEAR...yeah yeah, I know, one day does not a year make...
But howsomever, at the JETHRO BEAUDINE SCHOOL OF CYPHERIN, BRAIN SURGERY AND DOUBLE NAUGHT SPYIN, it does...

"A dog is the only creature on earth that loves you more than themselves"

how about a couple O pics ? ? ? ?

A marine and his dog in front of a memorial for the dogs that died in WWII

Got my pics out of order...of course this ol boy above, is Big Olie...not a dog, but loyal just the same...

Big Olie and his buddy Silent Samson, or "Sammy"...is stone deaf...

Cooper and Jack guarding Haley...                                             Another "cooper" guarding his Marine..

I instantly thought of my dad when I read Jan's description of cornbread crumbled in milk. He loved cornbread with buttermilk and liked to spoon that mixture from a glass.

And for me it's honey with my sopapillas and syrup with my pancakes, although I think there are a lot more natural health benefits from the honey. I wish I had been as foresightful as Steve and saved a few of those old Log Cabin tins.

And Beau here's my contribution to today's pet pictures. Fran took this yesterday of Gus and I in our recliner enjoying the excellent Texans game. As I've said before he may weigh 70 plus pounds and sometimes act like a macho hunting dog, but in his mind he's still a lap dog.

Gus and I had gotten up at 2:30 AM on Saturday morning and driven down to Garwood, Texas to hunt the opening morning of the two week teal season with a couple of old friends, and Gus retrieved all of the birds. He didn't show any signs of tiredness from all of that running in the muddy and wet rice field, until we got home that afternoon, but was pooped the rest of the day and still recovering yesterday. Fran said I need to get him some camo underpants.

Come on everybody, please post a picture of your favorite pets, present or past.

Apparently I'm not smart enough to rotate a photo on this thing because I tried three times and it kicked my butt everytime, so please just tilt your head to the left a little.( Well some Genie must have gotten on here and rotated it for me after the fact, so thank you Genie!)

Good afternoon Waltripians, one of my grandfathers was a real lover of cornbread and buttermilk in a tall glass and eaten with an ice tea spoon. That was his favorite Sunday evening meal. If he didn't have buttermilk he would use sweet milk (country term for milk that's not buttermilk). I might need to give that a try. I've acquired a taste for buttermilk as the years have passed. Couldn't stand it when I was a kid. That's like a lot of things I used to think Campbell's soup was better than homemade. I'll lay that off to the power of television advertising. My mother and both grandmothers were great bakers. One grandmother's peach cobbler made with real pie crust top and bottom is still my favorite. None of them made anything that you would turn down though.

There is a bee keeper over in Garden Oaks. You can get the honey ar Wabash Antiques and Feed Store on Washington. Now that's really local!

Steve I used to have a whole fort made from those Log Cabin syrup tins. My dad cut the doors out so they could really be log cabins for my toy soldiers. you've got me to wondering if there might be some stashed in the attic or garage at my parents house. Good memories about those kind of things.

Wayne you're correct Fall is setting in. A cool front will pass through tomorrow night. Temps will drop to 61 tomorrow night and 59 on Wednesday. That's great weather to me. Paige is getting her sweaters sorted out ready for the onset of winter.

Ted, Liz is about 15 lbs. shy of Gus but she still thinks she is a lap dog too. I've been meaning to ask you, is Gus named after Agustus T. McRae of Lonesome Dove? Man those Teal must be good eating for you and Gus to take off at 2:30 in the morning. If anyone is looking for a dog, a neighbor of mine needs to find a home for her dog. He's a little over a year old he's the color of honey with a white muzzle I'd guess he's about 40 lbs. His name is Baylor (that's where her kids went to college) I'd guess that he's  a Boxer mix. Nothing wrong with him. He's just an energetic pup and Miriam is afraid he'll knock her over. He's got a sweet disposition and minds very well. He gets under their fence and crosses the ditch to visit with Liz. I'd take him in a flash if I didn't already have Liz the Wonder Dog in residence. Call me if you're interested. I think my sister has some pictures of him posted on Face Book. WE're trying to help Miriam find him a home.

Keep on Dancing

Jan Barnes '65 (Nimtz)

Well, though Beau & Teddie's dogs are cute enough (and probably very gentle) they are huge!  I am intimidated just by their photos as I have always shied away from large dogs.  Jim, yours look just the right size plus they're good looking animals.  Is Millie Jan's and Ricky yours (or vice versa) or do you share joint custody of both?  Unfortunately we have no pets currently, either indoors or out.  We travel a good bit and living out in the country it is difficult to find someone to care for them when we're away.

09/18/12 07:07 PM #5238

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Jim, great pups...just look at the love behind those eyes...
Jan, yes, Coopers size is intimidating...but if you ever met him, you would see that he is a "special ed" pup...hard to explain, but he is not your normal dog.He weighs some 50 to 75 pounds more than his kids... Some of his "special ed"  and "normal" reading kids are slightly taken aback from his size, but not so his autistic kids. They seem to be on the same wave length. Of 8 autistic kids, kids that dont want you to touch them, nor do they want to touch you, nor do they make eye contact, 6 of them touched cooper and walked him and even hugged him. The two that did not want contact, got close and talked to him, one sang and the other read to Cooper.

Cooper knows the difference between his "normal" kids and the autistic ones. He nuzzles his reading kids, and licks em a couple of times and greets them like he greets almost everyone. ON the other hand, when he goes to his autistic classes, he stops short of the child. He stands perfectly still, and lets the child advance and make the first move. When I let them walk Cooper, when they step, Cooper steps. When they stop, Cooper stops.

I dont know how he knows the difference, but he does. This is a dog, that cant remember where his food bowl is, a food bowl he has been eating out of for four years...or has to have either his leash to come in the back door, a back door he has been going in and out of for four years...or Jack has to be leading the way. He is not motivated by food, yet he likes it...but you cannot get him to move from his spot even if you have a 10 pound roast in your hand, wanting to give it to him... All dogs and cats are special to me, but Cooper posseses something so extra special. We are blessed to have him, as are all his kids.

I'm not trying to talk you out of being intimidated by big dogs, for the most part, a strange big dog intimidates me somewhat. I've never met or known a dog like Cooper before. Anytime we, me and Cooper and Jack, go out on patrol, if we are acosted by dog or dogs, Cooper dances about, and "ruffs" but it's Jack that is the protector. Jack will light into whoever or whatever is the perceived "threat", yet jack is as gentle as Cooper when not threatened. Cooper just looks like a dog, and smells like one, but is more probably an "angel" ! ! ! ! At least thats my take on the subject.

Ok, suppers ready...we're having chicken tortilini with an italian sausage sauce, sweet peas, AND GOLDEN HOMINY...havent had hominy in years. It smells so good and earthy. One of only a few ways I can have corn.

Yall come back now ya hear...

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey kids...it's me again...yeah, who else would it be. I'm inbetween moving "junk" around upstairs so we can paint the "old game room" and the foyer. Then carpet, then move junk back in...I have to take spells moving stuff cause my back starts hollarin if I'm going to long.

"please pet me...I wont bite"                             Big Olie finds good use for everything...

I told you I had an easy chair with duct tape on it. If it doesnt have duct tape on it, it belongs at the bottom of the swimming hole. And sometimes even if it does have duct tape, it is at the bottom of ye olde swimmin hole...as you can see, Big Olie is putting this chair to good use.

Love those pups Burge, thanks for sharing them with us..

whattaya think about this car for Diane??? She's looking, and I found this one. I really dont think "idjit bonehead" shoulda been the appropriate response for my earnest help. Of course she said it with a smile and kissed me on the cheek. I kinda sorta like that car. It is a cadidalac. Dont know what year. I especially like the flame job. I have allus liked flames on cars. Always wanted a 32 ford roadster with flames. My 51 ford had flames, well not on the side, but coming out of the carburetor. Seems it was out of time, and would backfire up through the mean ol two barrel and shoot flames out like a dragon. I had the hood off at the time. It was an attention getter for sure, and I thought it was cool, but my dad thought otherwise...so you can guess who won that one...

Teddie Jordan

We sure are enjoying the pet pictures guys. Come on folks, especially you ladies, we know you have some good ones too.

Burge, all of the words you use to describe your pups are appropriate, and I think serene and regal would apply too. Simply beautiful. Which one is Tugboat? Love the name.

Jim, priceless. The "eyes" have it. Also like the names Millie and Ricky. (How about Lucy and Ricky?)

And Beau, is there any way you could get your cats to relax a little more? I think they believe that they live in a resort. And as for working dogs, Cooper is the ultimate working dog, with the work he and you do with kids and especially  the special needs ones. Cooper does indeed have a gift. There is no higher calling.

And I think you need to try to get Diane to reconsider on the car. She could make quite a statement in that beauty.

Jim Taylor

Well Jan, its just the opposite.  Millie is mine and Ricky is Jan's  Jan inherited Ricky from her dad when he passed away in 2006.  Millie was just diagnosed with canine diabetes and is on 2 insulin shots a day.  In a matter of two weeks, it caused her to develop cataracts and go blind.  Once the diabetes in under control, I expect we will be at the mercy of a doggie opthamologist.  It's only money, right?

Hey Teddie, I showed her the car again, it's just three doors down from us here in the barrios. Got the "teacher glare"... She does need a car that gets a little better gas mileage. Hey Susan, what a fine kitty! ! ! ! I Is Duffy deaf??? I had heard that most white cats are deaf...we have one cat that is deaf, but he is silver grey...I love em...well, except when they barf on things.

Cats have got to be the barfinest animal in the whirld. We have half dozen bedspreads on our bed. 5 decoys and one for real one. One day, each cat barfed on each bedspread...and we have 6 cats...first cat barfed, I removed the cover and put it in the washer...2nd cat barfed on the next one...and so on...gosh how lucky we are...we keep the washing machine hummin thats for sure..they also like to barf on the mail if you happen to set it down where they can get to it. Well, why not. I've often wanted to barf on the mail myself. Oh, they like barfin on "official" documents and books of stamps and your I phone...

A person came over, wont say who, but we put all the cats up except for Big Oliver...he was asleep, what harm could possibly come from a sleeping cat???? This person set their I phone down, did I mention it was brand new? Anyway, we sat down, and then I heard the tell tale "gaaack gaaack aaaack BUUIICCKK"...our guest said "my that is an interesting sound. whatever could it be"...Hmmm, yes, whatever could that be I feined...

Yessir, Big Olie didnt disappoint...it was his finest hour, and messiest...uh...barf...we appologized, for Olivers rude behavior, but methinks it fell on deaf ears...good thing they looked before they put the phone up to their ear, or they woulda had more than a deaf ear...I gave Oliver a stern talking to, and grounded him also...kids, whatchagonnado...

\Got a call from em later on from a NEW I PHONE...they said Best Buy was not sure if the insurance covered "cat barf"...but they would go ahead and honor it...Maybe I could start selling "CAT BARF INSURANCE" ...who needs a stupid lizard when we have BIG OLIVER as our spokescat, or is it barfcat???

Hey Jim, we had a cat with diabetes that lived to be 18 years old. She got a shot twice a day for 7 years. the trick is, once you get the dosage set right, then give the shot at precisely the same time everyday. ours was 7 and 7...The vet said 30 mins on either side was sufficient...The shots are easy to give. just pinch the skin and stick and move...I have stuck myself on many and various occasions...her last year, we had to administer fluids by IV every couple of days. That was easy too...She seemed to know when her shots were due, because she would come sit by us when it was due...cats are smart...smart enough to find my house and me feed the little buggers for 30 years...

Our dog rocky got diabetes at 6 years old, and then got cataracts...they cost 2500 dollars to remove, but before we could remove them, he got glaucoma...no cure for that...never did get his insulin right...never had the chance, because he died of a hemoglobin disorder...BOO...I still miss him! ! !

They are our friends and family...not much most of us wouldnt do for family and friends is there ! ! ! !

Burge, your dogs are such a pleasure to look at...I'll bet they are just that much and more, actually being with them...

Hey Jimmy ! ! ! ! Fine family! ! ! ! and fine horses also...just beautiful...My sister in Virginia, use to raise thoroughbreds and andalusians (sp) I think she calls em "warm bloods"! ! ! I thought horses were all in the warm blooded family...oh well, learn something knew every millenium...

Hey folks, keep em coming...Hey Mickey, you still riding SAA??? I think thats what it's called. I remember you posted some pictures a year or so back of you riding in the shooting competition...give us more...

I love looking at pet/family/travel/any and all pictures...Ok, the little woman is home from choir and chrogers...AND, I hear the tell tale, "gaaack gaaack aaack BUUIICCKK" and in stereo too..why, it's big Oliver and Peaches...dueling barfcats...invest in paper towels and cleaning products...now you know why we are ridding ourselves of CARPET...

Guess I will shower and turn in, so I can toss and turn another night...been having hell trying to sleep...seems like I fall asleep and then wake with a start in a cold sweat...sins of the past probably...alcohol doesnt help...pain pills make me sleepy, but no sleep for sure...most everything else just makes me a raving pairofnormal schizophreniacs..."and miles to go before I sleep..."

Your frien and brother...Dr Doolittle...vice president of BARFCAT INSURANCE...

09/19/12 10:47 PM #5247

Beau Wann, Jr.

oH HEY JIM, I forgot to mention, get a bottle of Karo syrup, the clear kind...sometimes they get too much insulin and you have to give them a teaspoon of karo...you can tell because they sort of stagger about...we have had that happen a few times...luckily our vet clued us in about that long before we were confronted with it...also, make up some "RICE SOCKS" because sometimes the critters get cold from the insulin and or lack thereof...

In case you dont know what "RICE SOCKS" are, just buy some kneehigh tube socks and put two of them together, one inside the other, then fill with uncooked rice...tie up the open end...heat the sock in the microwave for about 2 mins...cats dont try to eat the sock with the rice in it, but Jack and Cooper discovered one, played tug o war,  and tore it all to hell and gone and we had rice all over the house....the place looked like an Elvis Wedding chappel...ever now and again, I still find a kernel of rice...

They stay warm for quite a spell, and you dont have to worry about leaving a heating pad on and forgetting about it...Good luck...

Dr Doomore than little

Hey Beau!  Duffy is not deaf.  I did have a white cat way back when that was deaf - he also had a green eye and a blue eye - also a black spot on his head - his name was Topper.  I have a dog, too!  Her name is Ebony, call her Ebby.  She is a black dachsund and really sweet.  I don't have any pictures of her online.  Also, I must confess, I am more of a "cat" lady!  Keep the pictures coming!

hey teddie, tugboat is the guardian of my couch, the white one is ping and is his mother.in the top pic tugboat is on the left, the little one is panda, she was the last of the six pups i gave away;i could have sold her for $600 but all i wanted was for them to have a loving home.debox is the sire and is on the right.they are registered shar-pei brushcoats with 3000 years of breeding and are well behaved.i like em.

jimmy, you have some really fine horses, they love to show thier stuff,i bet you are proud as a peach.horses are noble creatures and i love them, just cant ride too well.

i like cats too but i made the mistake of trying to give one a bath;i had to dig the claws out of my arm,for some reason he didnt like water.i leave them alone and they leave me alone;they like sleeping on my cars though.

Susan Howard (Bowman)

Hey Burge!  I'm sorry someone didn't tell you that cats don't like water!  It's kind of like they always land on their feet when they fall!  If you bathe a cat you should always wear gloves - thick rubber gloves or working gloves.  My cate loves to play in water, but I can't imagine what he would do if I gave he a bath.  He accidentally fell into the bathtub once when it had water in it and that was hilarious!  He was not a happy cat!  I understand that if you start bathing them when they are kittens they don't mind it.  Cats are inherently clean creatures anyway, so they don't usually need extra bathing.

Didnt the chinese breed sharpeis to be bear killers??? Hard to believe something so sweet looking could kick a bears ass. I know the loose skin was so if the bear bit, all it would get was skin and no vitals, which has to not feel very good anyway...stinkin chinese, what the hell do they know anyway...THOSE PEOPLE ! ! ! ! they ought to stick to fishheads and rice..."rolly polly fishheads"...seems there was a song that went like that...or am I part of EAPs "a dream withing a dream"????...plus, from now on, when I dig a hole, I am not gonna dig to china, in protest for their idjitry...so there...

Susan, I'm more of a catlady myself...oops, cat man du actually. But we are an equal opportunity animal rescue family...cept for snakes, grizzaly (east tex for grizzly) bears, spiders, sharks, alligators and crocs...and any other mean bad and nasty critters...

OH HEY JIM ! ! ! ! ! if you let your pup out by your swimmin hole, you gonna have to build a fence around it. When Rocky went blind, he fell in twice...had to jump in and rescue that poor boy. Killed my soul that he had to go through that. I just got 2X8 lattice work, and built a frame around it, and put large shelf wall hangers for feet, all around the pool and connected them with bungy cords.

Both times Rocky fell in was at night and in the winter, when we had winter that is. I didnt hesitate, just jumped in after him. He only fell in the second time because I hadnt finished the fence. As blind luck would have it, he found the only opening. What are the odds of that??? At my house, odds are good...

God love his heart, I could take that ol boy runnin and he would run beside me, blind as a bat, and just trusted me that I would keep him safe. No greater love...works both ways dontchathink! ! !

I love horses too. Had a couple once. They are high maintenance for sure, but smart and loving. I would like to go to one of those "DUDE" ranches dude, but dont know if I would care to saddle up and ride one. Not as easy on the back and joints as is my "ironhorse" Pegasus. But there is also a "medicinal" effect that horses provide, for folks with neurological problems. Hey, maybe thats my problem, GOT NO HORSES, ONLY BARFIN CATS...

Well, I do have Cooper and Jack...Jack pretty much wants FOOD, and lovin. And probably in that order too. Coop on the other hand...well, that ol boy is just amazing...At Jefferson Elem, on our initial visit, the shyest girl in the whole school volunteered to read with cooper. The teachers et al, were just amazed and shocked at that...they knew then and there, they had to have Cooper. Our first session with the little girl, went just great. If a smile was glass, her face would have broken into a zillion pieces. What a sweet child ! ! ! ! I wouldnt mind doing it twice a week there, but I already have another school, and it does take some prep work to just get to one school once a week.  I need an assistant, thats what. An assistant for Coopers assistant...

Well, ok, "MY Painters" are here...why yes, I have painters now...Renoir of Oak Forest and Picasso of Pinebluff...Remodeling sure goes slow, but is worth it in the end...maybe...

Keep the sun at your six and ride boldly ride...

Thanks for the advice Mr. Beau.  Millie has already fallen in the concrete pond several times.  She takes off running and doen't realize she's going to get wet until she's already under water.  So far she's small enough that she hasn't gotten far from the edge and we've been able to scoop her up.  As I'm sure you are aware, until we get the diabetes under control she has to pee a lot.  Letting her out at 3:00 in the morning has become a real adventure.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Jim, one is glad to be of service. Good luck with Millie. Generally if you can hit the every 12 hour mark close, she will do well, unless other complications arise...dont know what those might be, but you never know.

OK Gang...this is now serious. Got an Email from Jackie, and the biopsy came back...cancer. She also has a blood clot that is suppose to clear up in about 3 months. She is back to work, but I know this has got to weigh heavy on her mind. The only reason I am being the town crier on this, is, she is a dear friend and unofficial sister. And she said it was no secret, so I determined that it was ok to put it on the forum. Others in the Fudds circle know, and since she said it was no secret, I take full responsibility for getting the word out...If I am wrong, apologies will be forthcoming. I would never intentionally or unintentionally ever hurt anyone, let alone a friend like Jackie...or any of you...

Safety in numbers...think as positive of thoughts as possible. I'm not certain what service we can render, but we  are here, at the ready to do ANYTHING for our dear friend and sister, as I know most others are also ready to assemble any kind of rally and help for Jackie.
