For those of you who left Fudd's early last night or didn't manage to get there, you missed the opportunity to meet Cooper Wann. Beau and DW stopped by after Coop's class. Those of us that were still there trooped out to the parking lot to meet him. Barbara Porter photographed Coop and Beau with Coop's certificate. He is now a Certified Service Dog. He is a reading specialist now. He and Beau will be going to CyFair schools to work with kids to get them to reading more. Beau put bites of Oscar Meyer weiners between the pages to teach Coop to turn the pages. Beau have you thought of doing that with the kids?

Burge you're on the right track. Let's lighten up the Forum. Everyone needs some laughs during these trying times. Laughter heals the body and the spirit. I read somewhere that a study showed that people who read the comics in the paper first, feel better in general.

For the thought of the day: yesterday after seeing a client in Missouri City I passed a church. They had this thought  on their marquee; "Having trouble sleeping? Try counting your blessings" !

An item from this morning's Chronicle on page A2. Sally Gordon, 101, has received the award as America's Oldest worker for 2010. She works at the state capitol in Nebraska. She was secretary to 3 governors and worked as a model. For the last 26 years she has been an assistant sergeant-at arms in the Nebraska Legislature. She was born, 1909, before the current state capitol ws built. She said " I used to be a model. Now I feel like a Model T." She has no plans to retire though. Her advice; :"try to learn new techniques, listen and be kind to co-workers". Sounds like good advice to me. She's had 101 years to reach that conclusion.

Everyone have a great day and. . .

Yes, I am playing a dulcimer that the guitar player loaned me. As people would walk up to listen he would say, "Now go back to your car and get your banjo, I know you got one out there." Most people would laugh, but I said," Just as soon as I finish my peanut butter and jelly sandwiah, I will play that dulcimer of yours." Heck, he thought I was kidding. the dulcimer was made for him by one of his friends out of an old wormy chesnut board and it looked and sounded very nice. I think I will make me one of those instruments, if I ever finish the guitar I am working on. Hopefully, I will get it finished by the end of the month.

hey lloyd,i have a lotus "dreadnaught' clone and the label says 'made in china';i did a little research on the lotus and most agree that it is acceptable.the wood is fine and the finish is pure, the silver frets are perfect.the problem is the "e"string tangent screw;it seems to bind then loosten.i thought about taking the worm screw and knob out and shimming for some resistence;mabe a couple thousands of an inch, the knob could have suffered a blow and bent out of shape.would it be worth taking apart just that one?

Burge, replacement tuners are not too expensive, I would try a new set  and then if that clears up the problem you might consider a better set in say another year or so.

Making a kit guitar can be straight forward I would think, Try the Stewart McDonald web site as well. There is a place around Waco I think for all kinds of guitar finishes like the Fender elctric cool colors. I look up the web site, it is something like Rancho De Luxe or something. then of course you have to get the right elecric pick ups

beau,i dont have any experience finishing any musical instrument;the varnishes are special and preserve the tone of the notes.this lotus is varnished with a couple of different finishes.you have to ask lloyd about that.as for that tuner,it might be fun to look for some originals;ill have to look again what model it was cloned from;high grade for $100.

Lloyd I'm impressed with your making of musical instruments. Not only can you play them but make them too. Very cool. I've been working on repainting my patio furniture. One more coat on the underside of the table and I'm finished. Great color, wildflower blue. I've already had several people comment on how good they look. Not in the same category though as making a guitar or a dulcimer. Very talented my friend.  Have you ever thought about making a bass fiddle? Now that would be a project.

OofOF, with the weather we've been having, if you keep the sun at your six all the time, your six is going to be real sunburned. Since you are a connoisseur of burgers did you read the article in the Chronicle this morning about The Hubcap Grill? In the opinion of Allison Cook it is the best burger in Houston and the whole state. By chance have you tried it?

I have heard of the Dinnerbell but I've never eaten there. It was one of my dad's favorite places when he used to work for McCullough Tool Co. on Lockwood, methinks.

Burge when you talked about shimmg that part of the guitar 1 or 2 thousandths made me think of one of my grandfathers. He was a master tool maker at Hughes Tool for 35 years. When he would talk about some tool he was working on and the engineer would want him to take 1 or 2 ten thousandths off of something I always had a hard time imagining how miniscule that would be. Also what precision it would take to accomplish that.

By the way that snow cone stand is still operating at Ella and 43rd. if anyone wants to take a trip down memory lane. It's bright yellow. If you miss it, you shouldn't be driving.

Beau, I found it.... Guitar ReRanch  Garland Texas.... web page reranch.com

Garland is not too far from Waco is it?

ReRanch is not too far from Rancho Deluxe is it?

I guess I would be good at horseshoes.

Beau,

I surmise that was you who yelled out my name as I was leaving Fudd's Tue nite? Sorry I missed you and Diane and Coop the "Hund". The Dinner Bell cafeteria is well known in my family as I have eaten their all too many times in the past---seems my ENTIRE family on my dad's side is buried there on Lawndale from his grandfather/grandmother on down to his parents plus aunts/uncles including both my parents and other relatives. I am now logging on from the Rosenberg Library in Galveston trying to take a breather from Houston's heat. My computer is still down!!!!!

all the years i spent trying to play the piano,it wasnt the notes so much as the touch.my nephew darin now has my mothers piano and he had it cleaned and retuned;im happy that it gets played;it was a gift from my father.i guess i love every kind of music;even got to like polka, but i dont have the coordination.

i hadnt read beaus'rebuttal to gary(sir gallihad) keith;sometimes it takes a provocation to find out what you need to know.it makes me sad and feeling that i have been the one who was naive.i have a greater need to trust than to know;mabe ive become too cautious, mabe paranoid of a world that keeps sliding backwards, towards savagegry.all you have to do is read the news.

i dont know how many people read the forum, not as many as 'facebook' but enough that if any one of you can object to my being on this forum.one down, one to go,speak up and im gone.

ps...        i will say that i understand the phylosophical point of "emotional prosperity"and would certainly welcome that too;but not as a political shill.

Good mornin' fellow Waltripians. This will come as no surprise but Liz, the Rushin Setter, is continuing. Last night I was whipping up a batch of rolls for dinner. I look over and Liz is about three feet down the counter, paws hooked over the edge. She's now tall enough that her head is above the counter edge. She is surveying everything on the counter. Like she is deciding what she should claim. Yikes, she is only five months old. Whew it would be great to have her energy level. It's good that I'm bigger than she is and hopefully smarter.

O of OF I'm up for a late lunch at the Hub Cap Grill. I'm not for standing in line at the regular lunch rush. Anyone else want to join this trek to burger nirvana? DOD yes you can be called for another jury. I don't think JP court was on your list was it? I don't think you have to be a law school graduate to be a judge. It is a shame about the Marine that was buried yesterday. I don't know what the answer is but we need to get something done to keep these multiple DUI offenders off the roads.

Burge, great photo of the two galaxies colliding. I don't think you or Beau need to drop off the Forum. We may need to lighten the subject matter some so more people are inclined to participate. We all need this Forum to have a connection to our friends from Waltrip. Gary included if he wants to act like an adult and be polite. Just my opinion but remember the title that goes with the name Richard.

Oh yeah, I got the patio furniture project finished last night. It looks great. Now when people ask if I paint, I can respond yes. I'm versatile I  use brush, roller or spray can. Hey Lloyd if I can "hep" you finish that geetar let me know. I'll tell you it was more than a tad hot outside. After about an hour and a half of finishing the furniture and watering, I was soaked in sweat. If it makes you feel any better take comfort in this. My niece called from St. Louis. She has a new job there at Washington University. She said she didn't know there are places hotter and more humid than Houston. I told her they make up for that with bone chilling winters. If we get through the summer without a hurricane . . .it will be a good summer!!!

Yo DOD, how about Tues., Wed. or Fri., 1:30 or 1:45 @ Hubcap Grill? Any other takers? We will dine on the State's best burger (which means it is the best in the USA) and fries. DOD another great burger joint is Christian's Tailgate over at Wescott and I-10. I'm inclined to go the purist route at Hubcap.

My next question pertains to your nap. I think in the rule book, to take an official nap, one must take it on the couch or sofa whichever term you prefer. From what you describe at your house all couches are occupado by critters. So where do you nap? It's too hot to use a hammock. Maybe like when you were a little kid. . .on a pallet. . .no you'd never get off the floor without mechanical assistance.  Maybe a recliner. . . no Big Oliver has that. I'm stumped . . .where?

I do remember when we ate everything. Also I remember eating a heavy meal, going to bed and sleeping very well. That doesn't work anymore. The summary of all I read is basically. . .if something tastes good. . .spit it out if you want to stay healthy.  . .or better yet just don't eat or drink anything!

Have you wondered why we're the only ones chatting? Sir Theodore left town after Fudd Tuesday. Ms. Jackie is on vacation AGAIN, Doug R is visiting the Rosenbergs in Galveston, Kay is staying in Anderson to get a herd of tiny cattle started (are those the cattle they use to make sliders) and here we are in town. You're going to funerals, getting your six sunburned and I'm painting patio furniture after work. . . I think that means we deserve the best burger in the state/USA! What do you think?

Got to go for now.

Rich LH

I think Teddy said it best back when the Forum was first created - let's leave politics out of it.  Somehow politics has crept back in and that's when the number of people participating on the Forum dropped.  We can always send whatever message we like to our classmates via their Waltrip profile e-Mail (or regular e-Mail as Jim Taylor, Beau, John Adams, Doug Romans and others +me do with our political views every day) and that keeps that aspect out of play on the Forum.  What do y'all think?

All this talk about burgers is giving my tummy something to rumble about. Course I have had burgers Thursday and Friday.... but  they were veggie burgers, no animals were harmed in the production of these sandwiches, Ferrell's Mom, Dorothy would have called them "Erstaz burgers" Any way I can remedy that soon enough. Here in Austin, someone decided that what we need is a Formula 1 racetrack. They want to build it a little south  of here near the small community of Elroy. TV reporters have been interviewing the locals to get their opinons of the proposal. One of the local eateries specializes in wild game, antelope, buffalo, and such. I'm adding that one to my list to sample. The owner said ," I guess I'd better clean the bathrooms."   Practical advice

What ever happened to the College Station World Speedway? Wasn't it supposed to be the money maker to end all money makers?

Happy Sunday yall!

Beau, like your snowman pic! Although most of us are lucky enuff to be able to stay in air-cond. the psychology of this heat is staggering!

I got "emotionally" tired of enduring the heat, the dust and all the country duties, so opted to drive out to a friends home and enjoy concrete of the shopping malls and good restaurants with good food, pleasant conversation and good friendship! Helps the heart and the mind. Now back to my precious animals and last day before my job at school officially starts. (hey, beau, no animal in sight at my friends, clean floors, beds, smells, no vet problems, etc. was a great break from my animals as well. Hope you and Lady Di have a pet babysitter in order to get away by youseselves for a while.

Well, the world speedway between Navasota and College Station is still being used, has been under legal scrutiny about it's noise and a new subdivision close by, but still active. Nothing about it is interesting to me, I prefer golf-watching. Tiger doing horrible on putting, today may be better, civilized sport it seems.

I've decided NOT to have the minature cows, thinking this is a not so economic choice, staying with the normal size after having attended the beef conference.

Teddie Jordan

Greetings all. Just back from the beautiful resort town of Freer, Texas, in the cool green section of South Texas previously known as the Wild Horse Desert. It was close to 100 down there every afternoon but I swear it didn't feel as hot as high nineties in Houston with high humidity.

I know the Dinner Bell diner. Used to take some of my ship channel refinery customers there. Great food, and at least it used to be pretty cheap.

Lloyd, I too am impressed with the fact that you can not only play several instruments but also actually build them. Very cool. I can whistle pretty good, duuh!

We had planned to attend Lindsey Apostolo's benefit on Saturday but realized earlier in the week that I would not be back from South Texas in time. So we sent Skeeter and family a note of encouragement and a donation. I am in awe of their courage and strength and try to mention their family and their needs to the Gentleman Upstairs every night.

Kay, I think you are doing the right thing on avoiding the miniature cattle. My dad was a weekend farmer and I've had cattle most of my life, although I'm now down to only two spoiled longhorn steers. They are a minimum of trouble, with just average rainfall and a conservative stocking rate you should only have to supplement their native pasture feed about 3 months in the winter with hay and a few range cubes,  and are a very liquid investment. You have one or two excellent cattle auctions right there in Navasota and you can turn them back into cash at the going rate any given week should you decide to. It's been my experience that whether it's dogs or any other animal, selective breeding for any one trait like small size, by definition leads to the introduction of other cogenital health defects.

I think most of you could guess my political orientation, but I'll say once more that we need to renew our efforts to keep political views off of this Forum. It is a fact that our country is just about evenly divided on which direction forward is best, and it is reasonable to assume that our class is similarly divided. Such discussions will only drive people away from participating. Somehow we need to encourage more of our classmates, especially the ladies, to participate on this thing as it is heavily male dominated. So come on girls, let us hear more of your old memories and stories. When I go back and reread some of the old postings, which I love to do, what I find that I most enjoy is when we are sharing stories and recollections about the good old days.

Stay cool everyone, in about four weeks or less there will be a hint of fall in the morning air. Like Richard said we just need to avoid a hurricane between now and then. It is a rare Labor Day weekend that we don't have one threatening the Texas Gulf Coast.

Take care my friends.

PS- Beau I just read your last posting, which you must have put on while I was typing mine, with my patented two finger typing skills. As you know Oaks Presbyterian was my home church growing up, and I am also a proud alumnus of Scout Pack 648, which dates back to the early fifties, and has always been sponsored by Oaks. Robby Wallis' mother was our cub scout denmother one year. Anyway, your comment triggered another great memory. Thanks.

oaks presbyterain church was our church;my sister christina was married to jerry mcdanial there,in 1957.i remember they borrowed don schenfelder's 56 chevy bellaire and he had to have it painted solid black;somebody used the wrong kind of paint for "just married"on the white of the then white over black beauty.that crowd could get roudy if they put a mind to it.you guys are something, digging up these stories,i dont remember the scout number but my den-mother was mrs. cook;billy cook's mother.we had a blast.

i guess as the short-term memory goes, the long term-memory sort of steps in with some relief.like a two day rain, that i wish would come on tonight(mabe tuesday).some memories creep in no matter what and im happy to have them.dealing with stress burn-out is not helped by the heat.some of my favorite memories are the rains in oak forrest;the clean smell and bright pine trees.

O.K.  here's a gal......thank you all for your cattle comments.  I have come to the similar deductions that I had investigated and decided  not to for most of the same reasons, and to top it off, they have names for all the minis....not a good omen.

Beau, I did exactly what you were saying.  Found out that a baby possum was in the flowerbed, Katy, TX, and put out bread and watched for him each day....you are right....once a pet nurturer, always a pet nurturer! I'm not a big fan of pine trees, raked way too many of them in Houston, was very happy to see few of them here in Anderson, although their seeds are finding their way here from the east.  They don't help the cattle, except for shade.  I do love the cedar trees, knowing full well they are not needed as well.

We just had the Navasota Blues Fest here last weekend, did anyone come up for it?  Don't know why we are the Blues Capital of Texas....I prefer Jazz. There is a Bed and Breakfast here "Bogarts" exceptional and serves dinner Friday and Saturdays...a bit pricey though, we paid $70.00 for two, but music, pool, pato or inside dining, as well as some of the "notable locals" in Navasota.  They are really pushing to put Nava. on the map as somewhere worthy to visit.

Today is officially 1st day back, and I have a lot of important things to do and little time to get them in place before 1st day of school on 23rd, but the Super wants me to help with env. stuffing....eeegad, guess the student's schedules will have to wait, what was he thinking?  Guess you would call my position administrative, but wear a few diff. hats.

Sorta of outa order here, but responding to Beau's question about the Austin Holiday House. The once thriving empire is down to one location on Burnet
Road, "the Frisco House." Not too far from my house. They recently moved from their original location and now enjoy a much larger place. They still pack them in. I like it that many of the workers have been there for their whole career, 20 -30 years!

Back in my days as a freshman at UT, there was a Holiday House near the campus. I had a crush on this girl who wouldn't give me the time of day. I worked for weeks to get a date with her to go to a football game. Was I surprised! this delicate feminine southern flower was a football fanatic and oh, I'll bet guys in the Navy couldn't keep up with the expletives that came out in flurries. I was sorta a punching bag during the game. when the Horns were doing good I would get punched, if the opponents were gaining I really took a beating, believe it or not the Horns lost iin the last minute of the game and I think my arm still has scars from her fingernail. she cried and black mascara ran down her face. (Very pretty} Anyway after the game we went to the Holiday House and she order a steak! there went my budget for the week!

( Hope this isn't a story I already told!)

DOD, I'll see you tomorrow at Hubcap Grill. Anyone else want to join us? Lloyd you could drive over from Austin. . . bound to worth it for the best burger in the State! The French Fries are supposed to be awesome also. They're double fried. I saw a show on Good Eats on the Food Network about fries. Double frying is supposed to make a French Fry that is ethereal. That was an interesting article about the rehabilitation of Michael Vick's dogs. Jonny kind of reminded me of Petey from The Little Rascals. That is a great picture of him and that little boy reading a book! In my opinion people that fight dogs, cocks, bulls etc. are pathetic excuses for human beings.

Lloyd I haven't heard back from you about painting your guitar for you. I still have some of that wildflower blue paint leftover. About three coats of that would make that guitar something to talk about! (lol).

It seems to be a common situation. I can't remember my pack # either. We met at Oaks Christian Church over on Ella. Seems Skeeter, Mike Hess, Earl Higgins, Bill Goetz were in it. I was in Mrs. Higgins den. I think Skeeter and Mike may have been in my mother's den. A friend of Mom's, Jeri Klepper was also a den mother. Her son was in the pack. Can't remember his first name, his nick name was Jug. The dad, Frank was my coach in little league one year. Many moons ago. Any of you other utes that were in that pack and know the number#?

Burge, you mentioned the rains in Oak Forest. I also remember that but my memories are of more gentle rains than we get now. Does anyone else remember that or am I just off track there? I know that weather moves in cycles. It seems to me that we are in a more violent weather cycle. When we have rain it is rarely gentle rains. It is usually torrential down pours.Oh well, se la vie, right?
