Lloyd Pond

Enjoyed a drive in the country yesterday. The wind was blustery and cool but the skies were clear and blue. I was looking around Milam County for clues to my Pond family roots. Some of the clan came over from Alabama just before the Civil War. Stomped around the Little River Baptist Church Cemetery looking at their markers. This is a very pretty county with so many farms, rivers and distant vistas. Blue bonnets were coming out...so let's sing Texas our Texas!

I have a good friend, Emile, who likes to cook up Cajun food. He came by to help give me tips on making Shrimp Étouffée . He brought over his cast iron skillet, spices and expertise and I think we did a good! OK, I will try and post a picture.

WOW Lloyd, that's text book etoufee....would love to dive into a steamin bowl O that picture...but alas and alack, my taste buds are broke, buds....I have to  add pepper and hotsauce stuff so much, just to taste something.....say, Lloyd, are you any kin to my youngest son?   He always cooks these gormet dishes, and then texts a picture of him having shrimp and steak hokey pokey...whilst I'm having a gourmet spam sandridge....when he is up at his place in lee county, and cooking out on a camp stove, he sends pics of breakfast lunch and dinner....braggin blaggert....

Pat, does you hubsand know just how lucky he his...fixed stuff for him that you were allergic to...now that's dedication..."in sickness and in health, and shell foods..." etc...I'll bet your gumbo was second to none....I thought your name sounded cajun, who maun, hah gaurantee...! ! ! Diane made her gumbo, and added chicken, shrimp, and sausage.....just wish I could taste it...! ! ! !

Hey Linda, how's the gnu gnee? Was it a degenerative thing, or athletic, or just general all round knee tomfoolery?   Sorta like my joints, just the usual hijinks and tomfoolery....havent had em replaced yet, but worked on....how long for total healing on your gnu bionic gnuee...therapy can be even tougher than the original problem, sometimes....but we are wishing for a total and pain free recovery for you and your Jaimie Summers knee.....wouldnt that be swell to beable to leap tall buildings in a single bound?  Usta think I could do just that....faster than a speeding bullet...more powerful than a speeding locomotive....

Jimmie Lee?   33 gredees here at 7:28....feels like 27, or so my Doug Johnson genuine official unofficial weather station here on Sam Wann Hill in the lovely downtown Chappell Hill, Texas, Washington County, "birthplace O Texas".....we had a heavy frost....Dixie Belle and Jacky boy were zippy de doo dahin all over the place this frosty morn...hope your snap dragons faired well....one O me all time favoriite flawrs....

You know, James Coney Island over on 290 at Hollister has a couple o large flawr beds out front, and theyre allus showin off their snapdragons....dont know who does their flawrs, but they do a bang up job ! ! !

OK, WAKE UP, GUESS WHAT DAY THIS IS ! ! ! !     COME ON GUESS ! ! !    MONDAY?  Well, yeah it's monday all right....NO,

It is the 100th anniversary of the FIRST ANNUAL CONVENTION OF "THE OLD TIME TRAIL DRIVERS' ASSOCIATION"  ! ! !! And the first convention was held at the Rice Hotel in Houston, Texas, this day back in 1916....and then met with the Texas Cattle Raisers' Association at the downtown city auditorium....

Introductory speeches were by none other than the legendary and Hon PAT GARRETT,  and the then mayor of Houston , the hon Ben Campbell....know who else was in attendance????    BAT MASTERSON....and a cast of hundreds.....first annual dues was one dollar....by 1919 it had jumped up to 5 dollars....

Just thought I'd throw that bit O trivia in there that comes from a book wayne gave to me....thanks to Wayne, I have a book I can read and reread and reread....it is a great book...."The Trail Drivers of Texas"...Waynes grandpa is in this book, or great grandpa....I tried rereading H.G.Wells Time machine among others, and Ol HG was a great writer, but, that ol boy was warped and had an unusual propensity for big complicated words......his stuff is laboriously hard to read, sometimes......

anyway, I love the book, that wayne gave to me, thank you so much....much easier and more entertaining to read than HGs stuff....hmmm, did I hear Mrs Simpson give a huge sigh?  I'm sure she would understand, as long as one likes to read ! ! ! !

Ok, I know it's early, but I was so excited to get back on the internet and forum...been dead in the water fer a spell or two spells....just wonder whom it was that put a spell on my computer....cpu on, screen black....
anyway, my beloved fixed it for me whilst I was having a breathing treatment or two.....

Oh, Larry, I did want to mention that watchin you play the drums, made me want to be "YOU"....I've tried playing the drums over the years, but sounds like me stumbling through Foleys kitchen dept and knocking over a display of cuisinart pots and pans, but what the hey, I woulda been good in a washboard and spoon and jug band, hey! ! !

Ok, gonna find a Gingham Dog and Calico Cat to snuggle up in the blankets....

and a big Howdy to Billy and Max, and you too Gerry...and the cast O hundreds that make this all possible...classes of 60s through 72.....

Kudos to Larry Reid and all others of you out there who contribute their time, $ and any altruistic efforts to any and all needy and worthy causes. However, I’ve got this scary image in my mind of being stuck behind a line of bicycle riders with Larry in his lycra spandex tights – don’t want that to happen! Just kidding ya’ Larry, good to hear from you and now that you have used the waltrip64 platform for your favorite charity, I hope to see you at Goode Co on April 2nd.

Funny story about Larry; I went to work for Amoco in 1982 and they immediately sent me for one week of diversity training at ‘mecca’ in downtown Chicago – go figure me needing diversity training? As usual, on the first day of class, they had all the participants introduce themselves and say what they expect to achieve in the course blah, blah blah…… Larry was the class leader but he did not recognize me when I came into the room and took my seat. When it came my turn to say something, I reeled off my name, rank and serial number and told the class that Larry and I went to Waltrip together, he got a good laugh and I think we had a beer that evening.  We ran into each other a lot over the years as we both traveled and worked overseas and then both lived in the Clear Lake area after retirement.

I am glad you are enjoying the Trail Riders of Texas book Beau. Has anybody been to the Texas history museum in Austin? Reports?

Lloyd, that looks delicious, everyone out there that love seafood like I do should be aware of the fact that much of it these days is ‘farm raised’ in S.E. Asia and rich in all the wrong ingredients like antibiotics as they simply do not change the water enough for suitable consumption. I can’t believe the FDA allows it’s import. Anyway, I suggest you buy wild/local and ask at restaurants as I was in one in Houma LA a few years ago enjoying a plate of crayfish and asked the server where they came from and she said Vietnam! Go figure.

Hope to see y’all soon, from Aransas Pass TX,

wtl

Cephus, What a beautiful sunrise, and you have the perfect observation point from Mt. Wolverton.

Those Washington County pine trees seem to have unusual protuberances though.

Beau, it is easy to see why you love it there...beautiful and very peaceful.

Why yes, yes...that rather tall protrubance is a cell tower that AT&T built especially for me...at least that;s how I;m going to tell it....do I have my fingers on the wrongest keys? I keep hitting semicolon instead of apostrophe....hmmmmgonna have to speak to management about that....

yes, it is peaceful here, when it's not stormin normin....why it's so peaceful that the litttle boidies build their nests everywhere!   My motorcycle is on the back porch, till I finish the garage. I took the cover off my bike, and within a day, the sweet little peaceful boidies had built a nest in the front fork....their must have been a zillion of em, and all woikin overtime, cause when I dismantled it, there was just about a whole bale of hay, hey!  That is just sacrilege to ignore the sanctity of a Harley Davidson and build a nest....

and it is ever so peaceful, the little boidies are ever so diligent in their nest building endeavors...just this morning, I was standing looking out at the view I posted, and noticed I left my house slippers out on the front porch rail....upon further observance, I noticed one of the little boidies flying into one of my house slippers !

I was standing there in awe and wonderment about why a bird would be flying into my house shoe...then it flew out...and as luck would have it, the little retired woman walked up and witnessed another bird flying out of the other house shoe....she said not a word, but gave me the one raised eyebrow stare, then said...."I know youre commited to conservation and helping the wildlife, but letting them have your house shoes, is just a little above and beyond the call of duty, dont you think?    You know, they make houses for birds, called "birdhouses", and you can buy them at Home Depot "! ! ! !

Smartallecky woman ! ! !   So, I went outside and retrieved my birdhouse shoes...dumped about a peck of hay out of em....if I set them on the floor, will the mice build condos out of them?  You know, these are LL Bean houseshoes,    Is nothing sacred anymore????   Oh the humanity ! ! !

Ok, gotta go, the pancakes are ready....

Beau, the new knee is getting a great workout in physical therapy.  Arthritis caused the problem in both knees.  I am so glad that I made the decision to do this...no more hobbling around in pain.  I went to the Coon Joint Institute in St. Helena, Napa Valley and highly recommend them. Of course, it will be such a hardship to travel back to Napa Valley for those checkups...Thanks for asking.  Wish my husband and I could make it to the Spring Fling, but the timing is not good for us at this time.

03/25/16 11:00 AM #7867

Beau Wann, Jr.

NAPA VALLEY...GIRL?  Yeah, I feel for you ! ! ! Of course, along with therapy, I'd imagine that there are some fine examples of wine growing in the area, and since youre there, you'd have no choice but to sample such wares...eh! ! !   Well, someone has to do it, so it might as whale be you....we expect a full report from the front lines in Napa Valley...girl ! ! !     Oh, and that Arthr is the meanest one of them ritis boys...

An up date on Robbert Hoppens....he had 3 chemo sessions I think on Tuesday....each session longer than it's predecessor...he experienced a little nausea, but otherwise was ok...his white cell count came down, dont know how much, but it must have been considerable....They came home from the hospital in Temple yesterday and got home late afternoon...the trip was an exhausting one for Robert...as one can well imagine...he is resting comfortably today...

Ok, I'm exhausted, so gonna let Diane finish this...I guess she can explain, maybe...Hi, Diane here finishing up for Beau.  We told Sharon to keep us posted on Robert.  She is doing okay.  Next chemo will be in College Station in 3 weeks.  She is glad it will be closer to home.  This bronchitis, asthma, and arthritis pain and whatever is really causing Beau to tire easily.  Lungs are clearer, but doc still trying to determine why the exhaustion-so far all tests negative.

Beautiful day! Enjoy everyone and Happy Easter!

Happy Easter from Anderson, TX....just read all posts and want to say, keep fightin the good fight. I am glad to hear that we are all doing well (for our ages...lol)  Beau, I've enjoyed all the sunrises and the sunsets are gorgeous....Hill country has nothing on us.  Staying busy with the generation before us, have learned a lot going to the Sunshine Senior club in Anderson w/ 90 yr blind  fellow churchgoer....wonderful people, darn the food and fellowship is good.  My church here is growing and thinking of new ways to help people, we are across the road from Anderson Elem. and we are planning on having daily aftercare, which will be such a plus for all of us, me too, love the little children. Easter blessings.

Let's see, I need to follow up on the etouffe recipe. It really is an easy recipe. Emile suggested Bret Farve's recipe. You can find it on line. However, a major change is to use Campbell's Cream of Shrimp soup rather than Cream of Mushroom. Another tip is to make a shrimp shell stock. I just added onions carrots and celery to the washed shells and boiled them for a couple of hours. Use the stock to make the etouffe mixture the right consistentcy. Emile did the seasoning. He brought several varieties, but we used the one called "Slap Yo Mama"

Anyone know a WAltrip grad, Larry Wayne McClure? I think he was in the mid 70's classes. He is a fireman now. His parents were friends of my parents. They were Baptist Temple members. Anyway found some old photos from Mom's scrapbooks, and thought I would pass them along.

Speaking of church, I found some old newspaper clippings that reported that my fathers family was kicked out of Norhill Baptist Church, excommunicated, en masse! Back in 1939, something got them riled up. Wish I could have seen that.

Sorry I will miss the Spring Fling.  It sounds like fun, especially with so many coming.  We are in Ruidoso, NM for a few days, then heading to Arizona to enjoy the areas we have not yet seen near Phoenix and the northeast part of the state.  This date was all we could work out, so looking forward to seeing you at the Fall Fling.  Have a great time!
