One of the doctors who worked with us for over twenty years had a wonderful Alamo connection.  His ancestor was the only defender of the Alamo who was given a Christian burial.  He had an ancestor who was an adjunct to Santa Anna.  His brother was a defender of the Alamo and he went to Santa Anna and asked for his brother's body.  He and a priest buried him.  There is a marker in the Alamo.  I don't remember their first names, but the family name is Esparza.  They had a land grant from the 1700s given to the family by Spain.  I found a Texas map from that period that showed their land grant.  I had it repaired and framed for Ray J.  His family is mentioned in most books about Texas.

We had a patient who asked dr. Esparza how long he had been in the United states.  He was rather racist.  Dr. Esparza told him since 1700s.  Asked the man how long his family had been in Texas.

Another blast from the past. Senior prom night. Could we have looked any happier? How strange that my date's parent's furniture & draperies showed up true to color (yikes) but my beautiful green dress looks all washed out. I ended up marrying my date one year later and we have been happily married for 49 years.

Jan,

Love the prom picture heart!!!!  Congrats to 49 years --- that is what it's all about.

If anyone else has prom pictures, please send to me and I'll post under "Prom & Celestial Ball - 1964" tab.

Hugs, J

Jan, we enjoyed your picture! The happy picture of yall would have been when you got in the car to leave your parent's home, and finally exhaled!

Hellow from the frozen windswept Wolvertons mountain...remember ol clifton clowers? "They say dont go, to Wolvertons mountain, if yore lookin for a wife..."   CHIMACS has the temp at 34, wind a howlin at about 40 mph, which puts the wind chill at just a bout "coldern all get out"...

This is about the wurst winter I have ever experienced, in my old age!  I know we've had colder ones, and wetter ones, but I wasnt 70 back in them good ol days! ! !

WOW, Jan youse two youtes was lookin good...like teddy said, yall was lookin a mite tense...probably couldnt wait till the parents put away the brownie hawkeye and yall could be on your way .  49 years...that is quite admirable, something to be proud of for sure. My beloved and I have been married 31 years, of course we married late in life. If we could have married when I graduated in 64, she would have been 11.   And a girl scout to boot....Kinda dont think that woulda been too popular. So, in order for us to be married for 49 yeahs, I'd be...hmmm lessee...I'll be 90...the year 2035..."in the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive..."  I hated that song...

Hey Jan, what kind of car did your date pick you up in??? Just curious!

I have no idear who I went to the prom with...even if I went...did I even have a date?  Did guys go stag back in them good ol days?  There are no pictures of me at the prom or of my date!  Maybe I really wasnt there then. Yeah, that's the ticket, I'm an alien from the planet Munimula...yeah, now I remember!  Or maybe from the planet Krypton...supermans younger brother...yeah, thats it...

Speaking of the Alamo, I think I'm a direct descendant of the front doors...folks were allus calling me "knothead" ...just a thought...

I know my Catahoula dog Jack is a descendant of Jim Bowies catahoula dogs. Jim and his brother lived in a parish in Louisiana named Catahoula. He and his brother had several catahoula hunting dogs.  I found Jack at the ranch in Leon county, and it borders along the "old San Antonio Road" or "kings highway", and that's the route Jim would have had to take to get to the Alamo, ergo, Jims dogs were the ancestors to my Jack...

I'm really not making this up. You can look up CATAHOULA dogs, and it will tell you all this good ol stuff. Well, not that my dog is related, but he must be.   The dogs were bred by the spanish and french from fighting dogs back in the 17th century or somewheres roundabout.  The word Catahoula comes from the Cherokee indians, and I think it means "dog always hungry and will eat anything", of course that is a loose translation, my Cherokee is a mite rusty! ! !

Teddy Roosevelt had Catahoulas...Dont know if they charged up san juan hill with the ol "Rough Rider", but I think that would make one heck of a story, dontchew? And given time, I might just come up with one!

My neighbors cows got out and over on to Waltons mountain. I drove in and there they were, eating MY GRASS... of course they left behind some fertimalizer. Think I'll wait till it wears down before I do anything with it!  I tried to shoo them back from whence they came, but they were rather stubborn, and down right aggressive...they charged at me!  I told em they was trespassin and I could apply a citizens A rrest on em, but they was havin none of it.

They even surrounded my truck after I honked at em!  Wouldnt let me and the boys deplane!  Jack was about to have a stroke, but ol cooper remained cool as a cucumber. He was asleep and really wasnt involved  in the goings on!   Fortunately I had my neighbors number and called him. he said to just stay put, and dont try to get out and shoo them away, cause they didnt like people. Nooooo, said I! Maybe the fact that we eat em waas wweighing heavy on their minds.

He did ask me what color they were!  There were two blonde ladies, and a black and white bull. The bull was almost as big as my truck, and probably ther tree of them outweighed my truck, my boys and me by a  couple of thousand pounds. They finally left of their own valition. Just disappeared in the high grass and tall brush and trees.   I sure would hate for one of them to run into me. That could smart!

Ok, time for lunch!   I'll try to not stay away so long, but our internet situation is not the best. Dianes computer generally staysup, but mine does not, and mine is a newer model, go figure!

Keep the sun at your six, if you can find it, and ride boldly ride...

Your frien and simple minded kook, Quasimodo, hunchback of Chappell Hill..

Post Script: Somedays my back is ok, and somedays it feels as if it hasnt healed a lick!  Have noticed I cannt ride in the truck for very long!

Good to hear from you again, Beau.  Hubby picked me up in a 1953 turquoise & white Pontiac Chieftain sedan.  That was his "ride" throughout high school.  But as soon as he graduated he bought a 289, 64 1/2 red Mustang with white interior.

Jackie, we enjoyed your pictures too and glad you found them. I see you had your long gloves in one hand. It's always fun looking back at old pictures, and it's safe to say that long gloves and big hair were definitely in fashion  in 1964.

Jan, Fran and I went to our prom in my old '55 Chevrolet hot rod. It was a little loud and I imagine we shook some windows and maybe some people when we pulled up in front of the Shamrock Hotel amongst all of those shiny Cadillacs, and got out dressed to the nines like we owned the place!

Beau, you mentioned that bad song "wolverine mountain".  I have been reading a Dave Barry book about the worst (read stupid) songs written.  It is fun to read because there are so many to chose from.  Title of book is "Dave Barry's book of bad songs". That one is there along with quite a few others from our youth.  I found it at half price books.

I went to the prom with jimmy hilsher.  We were friends and it was nice, although I was really sick with measles.

Thank you for the photos from railroad jack.  No wonder there was no parallel parking in Houston.  We drove very large cars.

Thought I should check in...we have really got the rain out here....4". I've never seen my pond overflow like this...been a faithful watcher all my years...hope my fish don't flow out. Love the old cars,  Beau, how's Chappel Hill doing?

Kay, it's always good to hear from you up in beautiful Grimes county. Our timely rains should ensure a bountiful wildflower spring.

03/10/15 07:27 AM #6946

Pat Brantley (Ross)

Teddie, you are right about our wildflower crop.  We needed the rain in new braunfels.  It has gone now, but it soaked into the ground here.  Cold, wet weather doesn't help our old bones, but it helps everything else.  My red hawk stayed put most of yesterday, but toward evening he started hunting in the ravine.  I love that bird.

I have looked for an obituary on Rita rents and her husband.  I met her several times at second baptist when we were hosting conferences.  Such a gracious lady.

Today is my grandson's 21st birthday.  He is in Washington d.c. For spring break.  He went with 5 other Baylor students.  Amazing how life just keeps going.  I never imagined that I would reach 65 and now here I am at 68.

Lots of the wet stuff here in Austin. The seasonal "Yett" creek is flowing. Now I wonder why I did not install that 2000 gallon water tank last summer. I am sure it would be full now. As it is , all the buckets are full and two garbage cans are overflowing. Probably should last a week or two.

Our Austin Mandolin Orchestra performed Sunday night. We played 15 pieces that were composed just for our group by composers not only in the US but also Armenia, France, Brazil and New Zealand. The music was supposed to represent the theme "Texas Wildflowers". I think we did a great job, naturally. We had 18 musicians plucking, mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, bass and guitars. Next fall we will host the National Classical Mandolin Society Convention. When I get the details I will send a link of the video that was made of our performance.

I hope everybody is celebrating the arrival of Spring. Ferrell and I miss the Azalea Trail in Houston. when will it be this year?

Our Mandolin Orchestra video can be viewed on line. The link is from Blackerbys Violin shop. www.violinshop.com then look at the selection for Video. Our video, should be right at the top. Part A is some small ensembles and solos. Part B is the Orchestra. Here I am getting pysched up for the performance.

looking back at the post about the Robbie Boswell Judy Nelson Prom Photo. This is a photo I took. My Father was in Heights Hospital recovering from lung surgery. We all dropped in to visit him in our Prom finery. So Robbie and Judy are standing in front of a row of chairs against the wall. Another visitor was sitting in the corner by the door, although his arm is all that is visible.

Lloyd, I watched some of the video (Part 2) and enjoyed it, and plan to watch more. Your face and foot action and  expressions as you played were entertaining, as was the music. And your smiles at the end of the numbers leave no doubt that you are having a good time. Good for you!

And Robert, I liked Beau's  theory on the extra arm better than what we now know to be the truth. That Robbie was such a good guitar picker because he had an extra arm growing out of his hip.

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

Wow, Lloyd thanks for finally solving the "extra" arm in prom picture.  I haven't watched your video, but will soon.  Thanks for sharing!!

Just posted Fudd pictures from last night.  Good time with my Waltrip family!

Wayne Lake

Hello everybody, I’ve been enjoying the pix lately.

I just finished a book called ‘In the Kingdom of Ice’, a fascinating story about 1880’s maritime quest in search of the North Pole by the American explorer/US Navy Captain De Long. Do any of you Cooley alumni remember a kid (Milton?) in our class from the Heights area that reportedly had a grandfather/explorer that went to the North Pole in the late 19th century, maybe related to Admiral Byrd?

I picked up a free, local magazine today at a sandwich shop in AP (cause it was free!) called Texas Now and noticed an article by one of our very own (class of ’64), Willie Younger. He is the coordinator of Rally on the (Colorado) River slated for April 11 which is to be featured on Earth Day by Matagorda County Birding Center) MCBNC. For those of you who don’t remember Willie, he got degree(s) in biology from Texas A&M and worked for the state for several years out of Matagorda, ran a research vessel/education from Matagorda Harbor and officed/retired in Palacious and now resides in Bay City. FYI, Willies’ contact info is 979 240 4872, w-younger@att.net. PS, Willie recently hiked hundreds of miles of the Appalachian Trail – just like ol’ Thomas Jefferson!

Lloyd, I am so impressed with your musical skill sets and you write great stories also! I do good to tune in the radio and scratch out a line or two.

I spoke with Frank Lynn the other day and he has been commissioned by the state of Texas parks to restore furniture built by the CCA workers nearly a hundred years ago. I wish I would have learned more about making sawdust from his Dad.

The more I know about my classmates, the more impressed I am and glad to be part of such a great group of fine people; war hero’s, teachers/educators, authors, writers,  ranchers, farmers, bankers, horse trainers, musicians, software experts, successful business people, nurses, police, firefighters, mayors, lawyers, etc. Did’ja know that Sweetie Marbury is currently Mayor of Durango Colorado, Tony Maddox was Mayor of Navasota and Larry York played on the 1980 Men’s World Fast Pitch Softball Championship Team?  Whodathunkit?

Pat, I am guessin’ you went to the prom in a black, ’55 Chevy. I too like to see all the predatory birds especially the red tipped hawk that frequents us in great numbers this time of the year.    Where I am in Aransas we see all kinds of migratory birds, loons, great white pelicans, hummers, osprey (saw one carrying a fish the other day – what a high pitched sound), shore birds of all kinds, American oyster catchers, curlews,  all sorts of water fowl (red head, canvass backs, coots, etc.) and on and on………….I took my nephew on the ‘Skimmer’ (1-800-TX-BIRDS) out of Fulton harbor (near Rockport) to see whooping cranes last week and we had a good’ birding day’ – the count is now up to about 300 adults which is a great conservation story since they were down to about 38 in the ‘60’s but hurry as they head back to Canada by the end of March.

Nearly every night I have either a night heron or great blue heron sitting on a piling looking for prey at my underwater light behind my house.

There are several good coastal birding areas between Port Lavaca and Port Isabel which have all sorts of migratory birds – I understand San Jose Island has more species of migratory birds in the winter than any other place in North America:

Calhoun Loop – Port Lavaca Bird Sanctuary @ US 87 and TX 35 head East on TX 35. Magnolia Beach,   from Port Lavaca head West on TX 35 to FM 2433 to TX 238 to TX 316 toward  Indianola – I think the state recently purchased 20,000 acres of the old Powder Horn ranch for a wildlife reserve with money from the BP oil spill, Magic Ridge (same area) – see texasnowmag.com Jan 2015, Seadrift/Swan Point, Guadalupe Delta Wildlife Area, Aransas Wildlife Refuge, King Ranch Loop including Santa Gertrudis Creek, Dick Kleberg park and then south to the Atascosa Wild Life Reserve near Laguna Vista (Port Isabel area).

Speaking of marine wildlife, there are numerous dolphins around here and while fishin’ last week with the nephew we started catching specs, mostly undersized (legal size is > 15”) but we were not keeping any regardless of size and a adult dolphin was following us taking advantage of the stunned ‘throw backs’ – he/she must have eaten 6-8 fish while circling around from end to end behind the boat as we drifted along fishing, care full not to go in front of the boat – I firmly believe the hungry/lazy dolphin was herding the fish in sort of a symbiotic arrangement –anyway we had a hoot watching it grab the fish and afterward rolling upside down showing the white underside, maybe saying gracias. The next night I was sitting outside on the back porch and noticed one swimming by my underwater light, told the nephew and later he said he saw three around the light, went down to the dock, tapped on the side and they starting jumping 2-3’ out of the water – he thought they were putting on a show for him, begging for handouts! Of course, he had drunk several beers by then so who knows for sure but he was pumped up the next morning telling the story. Then yesterday afternoon, three came in behind the house and were copulating, some sort of a Frenchy  ménage of sorts which went on for 5-10 minutes – local biologist say each ‘act’ only takes 13 seconds but they seem to having fun for sure. Today, I counted four in here at once looking for an easy meal along the bulkheads.

Well, I hope I have not bored or offended too many this time, from Pelican Cove AP, where I am

‘dancin’ with dolphins’ and hoping for sunshine as too much of this gloomy weather puts me in a foul mood,

wtl

Ps I hope to see you all @ spring thing in April
