Glad to see folks contributing to the blog again. I was concerned about the lack of activity and thought I may have to put more lame jokes on just the keep the pages turning. Kind of reminds me of NPR or other public radio stations that depend on listener participation whereby I listen but don’t send them money – same thing here – if you read it, you should also write on it.

Speaking of writing, Bunny Paine publishing another(?) book and by the sound of the title, I am sure I would continually need a dictionary nearby in order to read it. You see, I come from a family of dummies, for instance, my older brother, Dennis was going to U of H and thinking he would sign up for an easy ‘A’, he registered for Philosophy 101 thinking it was Psychology 101 but after attending the initial class, he realized the vocabulary was beyond his comprehension – true story, the boy could not spell too well and to say he was not an academic would be an understatement.

Where is our country cousin, Beaucephus? I hope your health is good, brother.

I got to thinking about you guys growing up in Mayberry RFD and realized, I grew up in Green Acres sans Eva Gabor and Eddie Albert and we would occasionally go to the Garden Oaks Saturday matinee movie or the Sears store on Shepard to see how the other half lived – I can still remember the smell of popcorn when you walk in the Sears and the racially separated drinking fountains and restrooms by the entrance – good times and bad times………….

Before I started Cooley elementary, we had a milk cow that my Dad would milk early each day before going to work and after drinking our fill, my Mom would sell the remainder to neighbors – no wonder I was a little fatty. We also kept about 500 layer hens and as I got older, I got to clean out the houses each summer, a real treat on a hot day – I did not eat chicken for nearly 5 years after leaving home. We also had a small herd of sheep for a while, several horses, a pair of white ducks that drank and crapped in the horse trough, a couple of cows at one time, a big garden and of course the typical pets – dogs, cats, guinea pigs,  a goat and even a pet pigeon. You might ask, a pigeon, yep I climbed up in my grandfather’s barn one summer brought home a squab, took care of it and after it learned to fly, it would return each day to eat with the chickens.

Happy New Year from Lake Wobegon, - 5F this am with a wind chill of -20F and leaving for the sunny slopes of South Texas on New Years Day,

wtl

Wayne gets the Mayberry RFD award! I thought our house was the only one with chickens! But a cow? One year when the lawn mower wasn't working, my Dad found someone who loan us a donkey. Hated that animule.

i think I still have my Heights Library Summer Reading poster. It is a clown holding balloons. You got to write in the name of  the book on the balloon.

My mom was raised on a blackland farm up in Bartlett, Texas with no electricity, no well other than a cistern to supply water, obviously no indoor plumbing, six miles down a muddy rutted dirt road, 8 miles from town, no phone service, daily cooking and  winter heating with wood as the fuel, and remembered every day the rest of her life just how hard that life was, especially during the depression. Obviously she had no more use for and saw no romance in the country life.

My dad on the other hand was raised in the relative comfort of the small town of Aransas Pass,  with all of those conveniences. That is where his dad, who worked for the old San Antonio- Aransas Pass Railroad, moved with his family in 1912 when they completed the  the rail line over to the natural deep water pass and what now is the Corpus Christi ship channel between the mainland and Port Aransas. That was a big deal and gave south Texas direct access to a deep water port for the first time. Daddy left there being burnt out on the the coast and fishing. His dream was to own a farm. In 1954 he got a chance to buy a 100 acre farm with a house, a well, a barn, a smokehouse, and a chicken house in Grimes County, using his benefits from the Texas Veterans Land program which provided low interest,  zero down payment loans to returning veterans to use to buy rural land. His plan was to generate enough income to make the payments from working the land. Mother gave her approval, but made sure he understood she would only go there on special family get togethers. We had previously spent time during the summers at my grand parents place at Bartlett and I remember picking cotton there. In the early sixties daddy bought a second place, again through the Texas Veterans program, this one in Milam County.

My dad died at age 59 in 1965 so it turned out that he only got to enjoy that life for 11 years, but what a lifetime of memories we have from that time. Daddy and Harry and I would go up every Friday night and come home on Sunday afternoon. He would take his vacation time from Humble Oil and we would spend at least two weeks up there every summer during cotton harvest. Sister Kay would come up and cook for us and all of the hands during the cotton harvest.

We ended up with just about every farm animal you can think of, from Angus cattle and horses, to up to 75 hogs at one time, to sheep which we sheared yearly and sold the wool,  goats, always chickens which I still love and from which I would collect and sell the eggs on Overhill street when I got home, rabbits which we would sell to a meat market on Shepherd, turkeys, guineas, ducks, geese, and homing pigeons some of whom I tried to race.

We had an old tractor and we farmed mainly cotton and corn, but at various times also vegetables, a lot of watermelons, and hay. Daddy gave Harry and I each a young Holstein heifer calf he had bought from a daiiry farmer for next to nothing, and as they grew into cows he allowed us to use the services of his Angus bull and keep our heifer calves and sell our bull calves to produce a little income. I sold that small herd of 5-6 animals to fund my first semester of college. After daddy died we convinced mother to let us try to keep the places and I continued to operate the Iola place and Harry the Milano place on weekends running cow calf operations to generate income, and we were able to eventually pay both of them off. Two shallow gas wells that were subsequently drilled on the Milano place helped speed that process up. We eventually sold the Iola place and Harry bought the Milano place.

I am so thankful that my dad got to live his dream, and it definitely stamped my brother and I with a love for the country life. Harry has lived for a number of years on the place in Milam County, and of course I have enjoyed that life, and wildlife viewing and hunting, and a little bit of farming planting wildlife food plots on the hardscrabble place Fran and I bought in Freer. We have two longhorn steers there, but for some reason in the 17 years they've been with us they have not produced a single calf ??? I guess as a rancher I've still got some things to learn, and I must have been absent from school that day when they taught the chapter on reproduction in Biology.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hello from thorasic park, mine fine waltripians.

Yup, enjoying a balmy 40 wet gredees up here in the chappell hill mountings.   Was flat on my back for the last umpty zillion hours days weeks years. My beloved is down at the med center getting her annual woman female girlie checkup. She has been plagued with high blood pressure of late, but she just phoned and said her blood pressure was low and normal. Needless to say, she is excited with that gnus. She asked if I was behaving myself and laying down...."of course dear, I'm just veggin out here in the bedstead watching football. (shhhhh, yall dont tell her I was at her desk typing this out. )

So with Diane away, I am sitting at the desk, where I shouldn’t be, typing this progress report from high up in the Chappell Hill mountains.

Hey Wayne next time you go to a warmer clime, take me along will you? It's only taken me 70 years to figger out I hate the cold weather. You probably came to that cornclusion 65 years ago eh!

Had my MRI last Monday before Christmas, and it was not good.  T8 T9 T10, T-bone one or some of those are compressed and swollen. (herniated disks) methinks that’s what it’s called.  That doesn’t even count the 3 crushed vertebrae in my neck and L-whatever in my lower back.

Got a date with a spine specialist in College Station on the 19th Jan. Earliest one I could get anywhere.

Needless to say I hurt. Both physically and mentally, and all this furshlerginer rain and cold and night is not helpoing one iota!

All chores have pass on to my beloved.

It is also with great sadness I pass along the death of our sweet kitty Peaches. She was 18 and a half.  That’s three cats that have died in the span of a year. All three were buddies. Now we have two cats that hate each other and fight like cats and kats, and one that is invisible and lives in our box springs except for the occasional visit to the litter box and food and water bowls.

What a horrible last couple of years we have had. Things dont look very rosy for 2015 either. Only rest and surgery are remedies for back problems. Nothing now that I can do to get this place ship shape for any kind of get together with anyone. Any more rain and we can kiss our 900 foot long driveway good by.  And as luck would have it, it is suppose to rain heavy for the next 2 or 3 days...yippee! ! !

Need to get a couple loads of crushed concrete layed out on the drive. Two wet for trucks to come this high. Just as well, wouldnt be able to drive the tractor to spread it out....heavy sigh! ! ! Well, whatcha gonna due!

All of the above has just wreaked havoc on my mental health compounded by not being able to get on and stay on the internet.

Jack aka stinky, and I went to town CH, and got a news paper and some cinnamon rolls and some firecrackers.  Yup, gonna bang in the new year, speaking of which, new years is my least favorite day and time of the forever!

If I can post this, then I just might come back and post another one.  Thorasic park is now hurting, so gotta run...See ya next year…hopefully…

Wayne, where was Cooley elementary?  I think that is cool that you had all those animals.

Beau, I feel badly for you.  I know that pain causes depression.  Been there - done that.  I am ready and willing to come visit and bring whatever you need.  I bet I can even bring you a special kitty.  let me know when.  I am praying for a miracle.  Driveway will get finished.  I enjoy the forum so much.  We need to get your internet fixed.

Steve, thanks for the library photo.  I had those book club certificates.  I loved reading.

Hey Johnny and Pat, thanks for the well wishes. It's just gonna take time. Pat thank you so much for your offer to help. If there's one constant on this earth, it's Pat's genuine willingness to pitch in and help. She even made a casserole for us when one of our idiot sons got injured in a motorcycle wreck, or was it the one whose leg tried to commit suicide. Well, no matter, they both tried to corner the titanium and stainless steel market, in there legs,  Pat was right there helping us out. Dont know if I ever thanked you, so I wil do that now, "Thankyou so much Pat for your thoughtfulness, and not just thinking of us, but actually doing something for us...THANK YOU"! ! ! !

Dont know what you could do now, the rain and cold has halted all box opening and moving in mode. We have had more rain this last two months than we've gottne in two years.   Methinks there's chicanery afoot...foul play...and tomfoolery to boot!

Pat, Cooley was just south of 19th street on 17th at ashland and rutland. It was catty corner to the phone co building which was on ashland and 18thst.   I think the Cooley family bought the school from HISD and it is now row houses or soon gonna be..

Ok, lessee if this will post. Found out that it's my computer that is not recognizing the connection, even though it says I have an excellent signal....

WELLLLLL, looks like my cornection held up!

Man, WHO STOLE THE SUN????  It's got to be a commie plot, yeah, that's what it be...A COMMIE PLOT! ! !
I cant bemember when I've seen this much fog and drizzle before. I'm sure I have, but not in a long time, thats for sure!  It's so foggy, almost cant see the valley below.  The hawks are just sitting in the trees, probably grumbling, like me!

We're a fixin to go to town, just waiting on my beloved!  We had company yesterday, and have stayed in the house for almost 2 full days. "We gotta get outta this place..." Cant wait to be able to sing..."well here it comes, here comes the sun..." I know it will be here sometime, ....BUT WHEN????

Would you believe I slept till 10 this morning AM...or whichever comes foist!

Back started hurting lastnight about 1 and had to double up on the pain meds...better living through chemistry eh!

Otay...guess I will sing off for now...

here's hoping my cornecction held up...

Beau, if I bought you a cat would you keep her?  I found a big one to sit on you while you sleep.  I should have known the name of the school across the street from the phone company.  I worked the 2-10 pm shift there for almost two years.(junior and senior years of high school.  All those extra credit courses I took during the summers came in handy when I had to start working full time because of my daddy's cancer.  that was the only time I was forced to join a union (cwa).  I wasn't allowed to attend meetings because they served beer and I was a minor.  Silly rule.  I was just about raised in a beer joint (the dutchman's) across from st. Rose of Lima.  Most of those men had served in WWII and their stories were incredible.  One man was at the texas city oil refinery when the explosion occurred.  His story was scary.  They taught me to play shuffleboard, dominoes, and blackjack.  It was fun.

Wishing all my Waltrip friends a healthy and Happy New Year!  It's been fun and informative reading all of the posts for the past few weeks.  I am beginning to believe the guys are far more ambitious on the forum, with a few female exceptions.  I really enjoy reading all of the Oak Forest history from those of you who grew up there from the beginning.  You are absolutely correct when you call it Mayberry!  What wonderful growing up memories!  I didn't move to Oak Forest until the middle of seventh grade, but also have a lioness's share of great memories.

Beau, I hope whatever treatment you seek for your back will be helpful!  I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers!  Wayne, I am thinking you are back from the cold country by now.  I am thankful every winter day, even when the sun isn't shining, that I live in Texas.  I love reading about all of the yard animals some of you had.  I would never have thought that would happen in the city! I lived in the country when I was growing up, but we only had a dog and a few cats - actually a lot of stray cats that city folks would drop off on the country road by our house.  Also had a chicken once that I got for Easter.   I was always dragging a litter of kittens home when I would walk home from the bus stop.  We lived on the acreage where Robert E Lee HS is today in Houston - the city used imminent domain to take over that property from my folks to build the school.  Not a good deal!  But it did cause us to move to Ella Lee Forest, which actually turned out to be a great thing for me!

Take care everyone!  Looking forward to seeing all of you at our next mini-reunion.

Love the picture of the old Heights Library. Really brought back some wonderful memories. What a beautiful place that was. Before moving toOak Forest we lived at 419 West 23rd Street and my mom took me to the library often. Did not go as often after moving to Oak Forest until they built the new library by Oak Forest Elementary. That was a nichj library as well but the old one had a lot of character, I assume it is still a library today? Need to get over onthat side of town one of these days and just drive around and see what remains from the old days. Again, thanks for posting ther picture.

Hi, Butch thanks for asking what my book Creative Synergy is about.  i'll quote from the Preface:

"This book explores the mystery of creativity: the why, the what, and the how.
We will trace some of its manifestations in the fields of science, spirituality,
literature, the arts, engineering, psychology, business, sports, and
philosophy,as well as traditions both eastern and western.  What makes this book different is its focus on synergy: the interactive synthesis of many parts and wholes. Ken Wilber calls such units holons: they can be whole in and of themselves but
are also parts of larger wholes.  So math and literature are both whole fields,
but they are usually parts of a college education. Your background is a whole, but it is alsonly a part of you, and in itself it is composed of many parts, such as your reading, your experiences, and your synthesized ideas about life."

I have used the chapters of this book (as Adobe documents) in both undergraduate and graduate creativity courses.  Basically, it explores how to become more creative yourself and how various theories fit the success of individuals like Leonardo and groups like the Beatles.

Thanks Bunny, for the overview of your book.  Two thoughts come to mind of your description...B.F. Skinners "you are a product of your environment",  and the books "The courage to create", and "The Road Less Traveled...forgot who wrote the latter two, and as things go, "they're around here somewhere". We have not even scratched the surface on unpacking, so it's probably in a box...well duh, huh!  I miss having my books around me, being able to look up on a shelf and my eye catching an old familiar title, or jacket cover!

I am currently reading Dr. Ben Carsons newest book, ONE NATION. I was sorry to see that he was exploring the political field, our corrupt political system will chew him up and spit him out!   He was and is a great man! He and I follow the same path in life, a thirst for righteousness! I read his first book somee 30 years or more earlier, GIFTED HANDS...here is one case study that I'm sure would befuddle ol B.F.

Dr.  Carson was and is truly gifted. I've got another book around here, in a box, autographed by him. Dont know which book it is, but in Coopers and my travels to one of the many schools Cooper taught in, one of the teachers gifted that to me. How nice that was!

"A book is like a frigate..."  Mrs. Simpson was so right.

Hello there, from Thorasic Park and the windy hill.   Back seems to be somewhat better, if I'lll stop trying to pick up every box I see. It's amazing how much better one feels when one stops and rests for a couple of days. Our bedroom is the perfect recouperating room. We get the morning sun till the evening sun and all inbetween, in our bedroom windows...when it shines that is.  But blessed as we are, the room is awash in healing light.

I guess the swelling in my spine has gone down, because it is not quite as painful when I cough or sneeze. It's amazing how many muscles we use when we sneeze or cough, that are attached to the spine!

Got my appt moved up to next tuesday, Fudds day. If the sawbones doesnt mess with me too much, we will be at Fudds. Of course i said that last  time, and then was a no show.

HEY SHARON, ARE YOU AND ROBERT GOING TO FUDDS??? JOHNNY S AND BECKY?  WE COULD CAR POOL! ! ! !

Well, just a thought!

It was 23 gredees this morn AM, or whichever comes first! Now it is 30 methinks! Jack aka stinky, and I have made our appointed rounds. Chappell Hill bakery for coffee and cinnimon roll, the ACME for a newspaper and prescription for drugs, pick up my shirts from the ACME laundry, and a ride down  the backroad to the post office to check the mail. Still havent received my decoder ring yet. "dagnabbit"... Anyway, safely back at the mountain. Ol stinky and Cooper are down for a late morning nap, as well as our 2 and a half cats,  where I should be, and am going...soon!

Hmmmm, lessee if this will post...

OH Hey, Gloria H., I watched some of the twilight zone marathon...I have the entire collection, so I  can pick or choose which episode I want to watch.  I like the "aunt T." episode where two kids, a boy and a girl,(the girl played Gregory Pecks daughter, "Scout" in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, ) find a portal in their swimming pool to "aunt T.s wonderful place for unloved kids. In this episode, her name is "sport". Another of my favorite episodes is "The Hunt" with the venerable character actor Aurthur Hunnicut. The overview is that his dog is killed by a raccoon and then he dies trying to save his dog, "Reb". They walk along a road and come to a gate that is run by the devil, but he says it is the gate to heaven. The devil wouldnt let the dog in, so Aurthur Hunnicuts character doesnt go in..."I wont go anyplace my dog is not welcome"...So they go along to another gate, run by an angel, of course, and it is the gate to heaven...etc.

And, no thanks Pat, we dont want  another cat...thank you so much anyway...

Hello Waltrip Classmates.  Happy New Year to each of you.

Lately there has been a lot of talk both on the '64 and '65 web sites about the "Good Old Days"  Talk about Monterey House, Doyles, Chuck Wagon, etc. etc.  Personally I love the 50's and 60o's music and thinking back to our simple way of life.

On that note my wife Michele ('65 graduate of Jones) has written (9) songs and one of those songs she turned into a music video this past year.  The name of the song is "Do You Remember"  and that is exactly what it is about.  She wrote it about she and one of her cousins growing up here in Houston and just how simple and fun life way.  If you have not viewed it please take a moment to.  She is not singing it however she is in it and so are our (5) grandchildren and some of their friends.  I think you will enjoy.

Go to You Tube.com and click on videos then search Michele Hilsher.

Thanks for sharing a very enlightening video Jimmy.  Wouldn't it be nice to enter some kind of time capsule and go back about fifty years and relive them all again.  I miss growing up in the 50's and 60's and wish we could go back and do it all over as it once was. I think about it a lot.

Thanks for the memories.

Okay folks.  Wake up and post.  Arizona passed legislation mandating a civics curriculum for high school graduation.  The test score must be at least 60%.  Test will contain questions required of immigration and naturalization process.  Didn't we have a semester of required civics?  The course was taught by mr. West.  I was never a problem student until the incident in civics and I thought I was going to be expelled.  Mr. West was a member of the john birch society.  He was a serious right wing zealot.  I was raised on the politics of the Democratic Party.  I am not exaggerating the fact that we bought a tv so my father could watch the McCarthy investigation and we watched.  We bonded on loving animals and politics.  Mr. West had given a test question regarding socialism and communism.  I said it wasn't true because Britain was a socialism and stable.  We both raised our voices and it ended in mrs. Gale's office.  I was really scared.  Mr. West and I had to apologize to each other and mrs. Gale had to grade my papers.  By the time I was a mom my political views had changed.  My older daughter was a sponge for education and I spent every penny I could at the teacher supply store.  When it was time to enter kindergarten she was reading and doing basic math.  I went to our neighborhood school and inquired about the curriculum for kindergarten.  The lady in the office was astounded by the request.  I was finally escorted into the principals office to discuss the matter.  There sat mr. West.  He didn't recognize me.  He proceeded to tell me that "our kinder babies" aren't really ready to learn much more than colors, etc.  I went home in tears and told my husband that I would return to work to pay for private school.  We were enrolled at second baptist within the week.  I am still a political junkie.  Who else would watch a one hour discussion at the national constitution society?  My husband says I have accomplished the impossible - I have made him a baptist, republican, basketball fan.  I must be a politician.

Please send well wishes and prayers to Barbara Porter Raines.  Barbara will have knee surgery again tomorrow and she needs a lot of TLC from all of us!!!

As you will recall, right before our reunion she fell and shattered her knee cap and fractured some bones.  The fractured bones healed, but not the knee cap; so another surgery. She will probably stay overnight and I will keep you posted.

Hugs, J
