For bluebonnet sightings:  http://www.bluebonnetlove.com/sightings/

Galveston bluebonnets, a few days ago at  I-45 & 61st St.

Another friend saw some in Spring off the freeway near 2930.

Steve, thanks for posting the bluebonnet photo.  We haven't seen any yet, so this is a beautiful gift for those of us without access to them so far.  Hoping they will still be blooming when we drive down to MD Anderson April 9.

Brantley, what a true prayer partner you have been.  To have been prayed for where Christ walked is a HUGE blessing.  THANK YOU!  Would love to hear about your trip.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!  Charles gets an X-Ray and sees the surgeon Thursday for follow-up and we're hoping the brace comes off and he'll get orders to go into out-patient spinal rehab @ a Baylor facility close to our home.  Thank you all for your prayers and support.  Charles has had some of the best days in the past month that he has had in the past YEAR.  God has blessed us!

Last night, we celebrated Charles' 68th birthday at our home with all our family.  It was one year ago that Charles was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer.  During that time he's battled the cancer, several life-threatening illnesses and 1 extremely difficult spine surgery.  He has fought very hard, so last evening was definitely a CELEBRATION OF LIFE!

With our daughter Betsy

Charles, you are looking great!  So nice to see that wonderful smile!  There's no place like home to truly get well!  I am looking forward to seeing you and Jimmie in October!

I love Texas in the spring!  Thank you all for sharing bluebonnet sightings!  I have seen bluebonnets along I 35 between Temple and Georgetown, also.  I plan to get out tomorrow and possibly head for Fredricksburg - the bluebonnets and indian paint brushes are always beautiful in that direction!

Another mini-reunion is coming up next weekend.  Some of you who have be missing lately need to mosey over to Clay's and get caught up!  We always have a great time no matter how many or how few show up! But as the old saying goes, "the more the merrier!"  Looking forward to seeing you there!  Thank you, Johnny, for making arrangements for our get together once again.

Beau

When I returned to Austin last Friday, I not only saw the beautiful blue bonnets, I also saw your beautiful home from 290. I want to see and visit(drop-in) after you are settled. It is in such a lovely place on you land. God Bless you and Diane. Hope you are feeling a little better and will be able to go to Clays.

Charles & Jimmie Lee

Charles you look great, maybe it's because it is your Birthday. Happy Belated Birthday. Good picture of you and your daughter.

Jimmie I know you are so happy for Charles' progress. But just remember you are an Angel, being there al the time for him. You deserve bunches of credit for that, and the love you have given him. I know that sometimes the caregiver is forgotten but you have not only gone through all Charles has and kept everyone updated . Thanks so much for that.

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

Thanks, Linda, for your kind words.  Hope all is well with you.  Good to hear you are out and about traveling.  I think we'll all want to visit Beau & Diane's lovely home.  Such an inviting color and loved the photo with the bluebonnets.  Sorry we will miss all of you at Clay's, but we have to drive in next week for a week-long visit @ MD Anderson for tests and lots of doctor visits - will be Charles' first long car trip, so we can't chance 2 trips quite so close together until we see how it goes with the 1st one.  Hope you have a great gathering, Sheffield.  Again, thanks to all on the Reunion Planning Committee for all you do to make the get-togethers so enjoyable.  Congratulations, Frankie & Leron.  Never thought we'd make it for one of our class to reach 50 years together.

Fran and I got lucky and got to see that beautiful work in progress while on a hot date one evening this week, with a sitter at home with Fran's mom. We were on our way up to meet my sister from Tennessee, who is an antique dealer showing at Roundtop, my brother and his wife from their ranch in Milano, and some life long family friends from La Grange, at old friend Manuel's Mexican in Brenham.

We spotted the house from the highway and made a u-turn and drove down the country road and lo and behold, there was not only the beautiful house but Beau and Diane visiting and checking on the progress. Safe to say it is not only a perfect Texas Farmhouse with great porches and all of the modern conveniences, but in a perfect setting as well.

Hope to see yall at Clay's tomorrow. I gave up a favored annual turkey hunt just to see you my friends! So if you see some weird guy over in the corner dressed in camo and giving out seductive turkey hen yelps, don't panic it's just ol' strange Theodore going through withdrawl.

Oh and on the subject of anniversaries, Waltrip classmates Anne Stewart and Bobby Helton are up to at least 52 years now. So Fran and I and many of the rest of us are relative newlyweds at 48, compared to them and Frankie and Leron at 50.

Good times at Clay's until I dropped my camera on the concrete and totaled it!!!  I just started taking pics when it happened.  I was able to salvage my memory card that had a few pics on it and will post ASAP.  I was lucky my daughter bought me a new Sony camera for Christmas, but I hadn't switched because of the learning curve.  Now I've been forced into it!

Hugs,

J

News regarding our Assistant Principal, Joe Tusa
from Jane Jester Marmion -

"Mr. Tusa is to be inducted into the Texas High School Sports
Hall of Fame on May 3 in Waco, Texas.

Before coming to Waltrip as assistant principal, he coached football
at Reagan, won City Championships ’58 and ’59. After leaving Waltrip,
he went on to be Athletic Director for HISD from which he eventually retired."

I didn't know that Mr Tusa was a coach. Guess that explains how he could lift you off the ground with his swats. Right Teddie.surprise

04/11/14 07:14 PM #6324

Teddie Jordan

You're definitely right Robert, he was the best swatter by far and was very uplifting, and whoever was second best wasn't even close. He is a good man and at this point in my life I appreciate all of his "corrections" to my behavior. I think you were standing there at our 45th reunion when I got a chance to tell him that and to personally thank him, and it embarassed him to talk about swats. I think in this day and time in public education it's probably not cool to talk about the corporal punishment of our day. (They probably don't talk about how all of the male students would go swimming naked in PE every day either.)

When he was under consideration to have the Delmar Sports Complex named after him I wrote a letter to the HISD school board and gave them my perspective on Mr. Tusa as a non athlete, and of how much respect I ended up with for him. I told them that as assistant principal he was in charge of discipline for male students, and that at one time I was one of his best customers. And that he was tough and that was his job, but that he was always fair with me, and that he deserved the honor.  I am sure that my letter was only one of many that were written in support of the idea. He wrote me a very nice note later thanking me.

I am glad that he is receiving this additional honor and he deserves it too..

Sorry to read the obituary this morning for Mrs. Mary Lois Barden, our old English teacher, and my personal favorite Waltrip teacher. She inspired me as no other. Mrs. Barden was born in Hondo, Texas in 1915, so she was in her 100th year. She was the epitome of southern class and grace.

Rest in peace Mrs. Barden.
