Pat Brantley (Ross)

I am very thankful for everyone I love.  My daughter Amy is taking me to Jerusalem in less than four weeks.  I am so thrilled.  I have been talking about going to Israel since I was nineteen.  I'm not nineteen now, but it am going to have a great time.  One more thing to check off the bucket list.  Only have three more things after that. I am so very honored to have lived such a wonderful life.

Wayne, I Can't wait to tell you the story.  You can change any of it you want, but it is true.

I got to thinking about Pat’s ‘bucket list’ comment and decided it may be a good topic for discussion since we have ‘re-visited’ about every restaurant within a 100 mile radius of Houston that has served various food types over the past 50 years.

Here’s my list, past and present:

  • Sail the Caribbean and Virgin Islands – 15 x between 1986-2012

  • Climb into the burial chamber of one of the great Cheops Pyramids of Giza:- 1986

  • Body surf Kuta Beach, Bali Indonesia – 1980

  • Sail Bora Bora Tahiti – Fall 2013

  • Drive from top to bottom of New Zealand – planned for the Fall 2014

  • Take a ride on one of the big Galapagos turtles – 2015, I hope

  • Machu Picchu - 2015 I hope

  • Sail on a tall ship – maybe someday,

  • Visit all the National Parks – in progress

  • Northern Lights - 2009

  • Drive an old wooden Hacker Craft or Chris Craft runabout across a smooth lake – working on it

  • House with clear water in back so I can pat my feet in it – maybe soon

  • See a polar bear in the wild – still looking for one

  • See the Blue Grotto off the coast of Italy – maybe someday

So may places, so little time………………………………….

What’s yours?

I want to go with Wayne on the driving trip in New Zealand - one of my last places I'd like to visit.  We've been fortunate to be able to travel a lot.  Every summer, my parents took my brother and me on a 9-day driving trip.  Both my parents had only 1 week's vacation each year back then, so we drove at least 500 miles/day on trips all over the US.  Charles had a travel agency in Dallas in the 90s, so we did a lot of foreign travel through that.  His first group trip was for a company I worked for - Mesa, Inc., T. Boone Pickens - and 50 of us went to Tokyo for the annual meeting of Kioto, a manufacturer of light parts for Toyota vehicles.  Long story about the reason for the trip, but we got to travel outside Tokyo on one of the bullet trains to one of about a thousand shrine//temples in that area.  Then, we traveled back through Hawaii.  Charles did a lot of mission trips for groups, so he went to Russia and Egypt for those, among other countries.  For our 25th wedding anniversary, we both got to visit our "dream destinations" at Lufthansa's expense, since they transported the mission groups.  I got to go to Victoria Falls in Africa and he got to play all the good courses in Scotland.  Long trip and lots of flights, but we were both exceptionally pleased with our destinations.  We've done the river cruise down the Danube, cruised the Mediterranean, traveled to Mexico and the Carribean a lot.  In the 80s, Henny and I traveled to Paris, Monte Carlo & Rome - fun, fun trip.  Been to many, many golf course destinations. I thought i really wanted to do the river cruise of Viet Nam and Thailand, but friends did that recently and said it wasn't pleasant in a lot of ways, so I've scrapped that idea.  So, my last wish has been for Australia and New Zealand.  So, Wayne, think you ought to organize that trip and see how many of us might join you.  Friends just returned from the cruise around New Zealand/Australia and they were very pleased (same ones who did the Viet Nam trip).

All that travel sounds mighty good! Lots O places I'd a liked to visit, cept it's too late for me. Been a few places in my youte, went to Iraan, and Paris, Moscow, New York, Utopia,  Quanah, Harrold...of course all those are in Texas, but it was a start! Pat, did that Mekong river cruise, but whoever the cruise director was, didnt tell us we were part of a shootin gallery, which of course led us up a creek without a paddle! I hate it when that happens!

I'd a made me a buquet list, cept my buquet has allus had a hole in it. I believe Ricky Nelson had a hit tune singing about his buquet having a hole in it! Mine had a whole lot of holes, plus there is a "whole lot of shakin goin on" so what doesnt leak out of the holes, jumps out the top  !

My buquet list is the same now as it was when I was 3 or 4, very simple...I'd like to be able to put my pants on without falling over; Same thing with shoes and I'd like to get em on the right feet! Well they are on the right feet, mine, but not necessarily on the foots that they is supposed to go on...that clear? Well it is to me!  I'd like to be able to raise a fork or spoon to my mouth and actually have what was suppose to be on it, still be there! and not on my shirt!  I always wanted to shave so I could be BIG...can I remove that one from my buquet list? Didnt know I'd have to shave my whole durn haid! ! !  (never did get BIG). Guess I subscribed to the Steve Martin axiom of "getting small"! ! !

Probably looming large on my buquet list, was just to have a WHOLE day where nothing went wrong! Still looking for that one. Oh, I've had a few where nothing broke and nobody died, but sometimes the smallest of things can be the largest of triumphs...at least to me anyhoo!

I dont travel well anymore, so it doesnt appeal to me! Howsomever, all those places all yall mentioned, sound wonderful.  I would have loved to travel to Scotland and Ireland and England, Germany, Romania, those being the origin of my ancestors... Italy, Spain, Portugal, Transylvania, Bavaria...And all pre WWII...Jerusalum probably my all time wanna go place. Liked to have walked the steps that Jesus did!   Well, not all of them!

The Olympics, as everyone knows, is being broadcast from Sochi, Russia, the foothills of the Caucasius Mountains...Every questionaire, every application I have ever filled out, told me to check the box...CAUCASIAN, for race!  I decided to watch the Olympics this year, but only to keep an eye out for pictures of the mountains where we all is frum!    Maybe when we get moved, whenever that may be, and get unpacked, I will have to consult my myriad of many history books about how it is I AM FROM THE CAUCASIUS MOUNTAINS, when clearly my ancestors came from Scotland and England and the Germanic countries...Oh, I know, their ancestors came from somewhere else...

I've never been one to travel the grand scale of things!  I guess that is the sign of a simple mind isnt it!   My journey has been long and arduous at times...but blessed as well...I think of all the things I love, it includes the friends and people along the way...such as you all...my beloved...not all, but some of my family...

Fudds is one of those pleasant journeys...I hate to see it come to a close on 2nd tuesday of every month. I love hearing all about everyones families and travels and funny stuff...some bring pictures...
All bring commradirie and friendship...

Guess I've been subscribing to "there's no frigate like a book", for so long! Sometimes the real thing can't match my imagination...Well, there's one thing that can and surpasses it all to hell and gone...MY BALD EAGLE....saw him again today. He asked me to share some pictures of him with you....so I shall...

I know the last picture is not an eagle, but a very funny looking white duck! Oh, it's probably the AFLAC duck with a perm...yeah, thats the ticket...

Beau, I love your eagle.  Transylvania is beautiful.  Brasov is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen.  The people of Transylvania are very different from the people around Bucharest.  I have not traveled as much as Jimmie lee or Wayne, but I have enjoyed all of it.  I did get to see the northern lights once from a cockpit.  It was a glimpse of heaven.  I have not been to Russia.  Friends are trying to get me to go on a river cruise from st. Petersburg this summer, but I don't see it financially happening.  I just want to be healthy in march.  I will have an infusion treatment one week before, so I am hoping my hands and legs cooperate with the brain.

02/14/14 09:06 PM #6231

Beau Wann, Jr.

Ok, I consulted my crystal ball, my beloved,  about caucasians...and here's the scoop, just in case you dont remember your history, like I dont!

The term caucasian was coined by  German Philosopher, Christoph Meiners in 1785 in his book, THE OUTLINE OF MANKIND...in it he proposed a taxonomy of human beans were involved to two races, Caucasians and mongolians.  It was further expounded on, in 1790,  by German Professor of medicine, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach a member of the British Royal Society, and considered one of the founding fathers of anthropology...

So there you go...now you are thus informed of real important stuff...there will be a test next Fudds... Here's a good picture of a couple of mongolian caucasians during the last snow storm we had...maybe 2007? The fellow in the yellow hat is a mongocasian...or mongo jerry...or mongo santa maria the fellow in the rabbit hat is from the planet remulac...

Then again, there is me...probably a descendant of dogs and cats...

Beau Wann, Jr.

All those in favor of Pats hands and legs cooperating with her brain for her infusion treatment, say I      ! ! !       All opposed??? Looks like the I s have it. Youre good to go Pat.  Well, we can all hope that it goes as you say!  Woulda liked to  have seen the northern lights! But, I will go with Pats description..."heavenly"....

My wifes sister and her family live in Kursk, Russia, as missionaries. They have been there for the past 20 years, give or take. Dianes parents went to Russia and stayed with them for three weeks, and wished they had only stayed a couple of days.

The roads are not paved, there are very few houses with running water and electricity and of course no phones. I have talked to others that have been to russia and they say russia is where we were in the year 1900...

Plus, all the tanks that were in the largest tank battle ever, in Kursk, are still on the streets where they stopped. They just left em where they were blown up, or ran out of gas, and stuck a MUSEUM sign on the street! And voila, it are a museum now!

They have invited us, but I aint going! Being missionaries, they have very little money, so if you stay with them, You foot the bill, for you and them... They cant understand why I dont want to go to Russia! ! !   Even if it were free, I dont want to go...I wouldnt go if Catherine the Great invited me! ! ! But she's always welcome here! ! !

I'm not sure what they eat in russkiville, borsht? Cabbage and fishheads???  I do like sauerkraut and sausage..... I'm not one of those that feel you must experience this or that from another whirld...to enjoy life, unless youre talking about chicken fried steak and gravy, and that's out of this whirld! ! ! ! !

Back in the middle 70's, I went to the MFA here, and saw a russian exhibit of paintings that had not been out of Russia since Catherine the Great. Saw some beautiful paintings. They wouldnt let me take photographs of them! I didnt use a flash back then, and still dont. They never gave any reason as to why they wouldnt allow any picture taking, but that made me mad, so I vowed never to go to Russia! ! !

Flippin through the history books, I ran across this Daguereotype photo of 3 generations of russki militia men.  The russki 2nd from the left looks kind of familiar...

Beau,  This video reminded me of your birds.  Flying with the hawks!

Here are the cliffs next to the Torrey Pines Golf Course just north of San Diego. These men release their hawks, and then soar with them.
This is really spectacular.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Yeah, that's what I say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALL YALL...
Yeah, birthdays are very important I think! Well, not for just the obvious, WE'RE STILL HERE...But we get to celibrate our own special day! ! ! Others may share that day, but it still belongs to us! ! ! I had an aunt Thyra, that celibrated her birthday by giving her mom, my grandmother, a birthday present, every year! I think of all the family I miss, I miss aunt Thyra the most...but then there's aunt Alpha and Uncle Bubs...all three very neat people...

Valentines day...! ! ! What more can be said? Everyone, well almost everyone, celebrates V day. I dont like special days like that one, because it is contrived by several industries...candy...flowers...and cards...not to mention restaurants...

I think giving someone you love a card, flawrs, and candy and taking them out for dinner, should be a spur of the moment thing. Do it because you want to, not because some set aside day dictates it. But alas, I click my heels and get in line and buy flawrs and candy and cards...thinking about it, I guess it's not so bad...beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick now doesnt it! ! !

I bought cards for my beloved, and find I have the best luck with the everyday cards, the ones not in the valentine selection. I always seem to find just the right one. Didnt do the candy, cause neither one of us need it. Plus we have a lot left over from halloween, another "special" day I detest!  Probably one of my all time worst ones.

But, I digress...back to valentines day. This was the first year in a while that I bought flawrs because the cats have always jumped up on the counter or table and started eating them, or pulling them out and tumping over the vase, and then, voila, a cat tastrophe...water everywhere...I decided to go ahead and buy some flawrs this year, cause I like em too...

And sure enough, ol cat tastrophe struck again...in more ways than one.  First I couldnt find any vases, cause they are all packed and stored. But for some reason I can see those big emerald green ones that everyone has under the sink or in the cupboard, just as clear as day. As I've allus said, "a mind is a terrible think"...

We did have an extra tea pitcher, so thats where they went... I wanted to add some frills and dressins to it, so I wrapped some tin foil around it to fancy it up, but it kept unraveling, so I did the onliest thing I could to remedy that, short of super glue...DUCT TAPE...it was pretty, even if I do say so myself...and I'm probably the onliest one that thinks so too...no matter, my declaration of love knows no bounds...I will go to any length to declare it too! Like cooking that special heart shaped dinner!

Oh, I forgot, I made heart shaped biscuits for breakfast. Well, some of em were suspect, but most came out looking like a heart....well, ok, one did for sure!  Back to dinner...
Had some frozen pork chops, or center cuts, defrosted em, and trimmed em to look like hearts! One thing wrong though, that I forgot to take into account, they were about 3 inches thick. Normally one of those bad boys is enough for the two of us if we slice it in two long ways. I forgot ! ! !

Used the wrong pan, and the wrong seasoning...if they hadnt burnt, they would have taken a month of sundays to cook through and through. Got distracted, and they burnt! ! ! Well, the outside and the oil burnt, and why not, that matched the burnt german fries I was cooking!  I finally just chunked the fries out, or blackened taters, as I call em, and chopped the chops up for the boys!

Lorda mighty, you ladies make cooking look so easy! How do you do it?  I've watched my wife and mom and aunts and grandmothers cook, and carry on a hunert conversations at one time, and the meals turn out better than in any restaurant! I thought, "shirley, I can cook such a great meal"...! ! ! Yeah, dont call me "Shirley"...Never again! ! ! Just breakfast from now on!

My beloved gets home, and of course my foray into the culinary vortex, is still hanging heavy in the air!  As soon as her nose entered our little rent cottage, she knew what I had been up to! But, being the trooper that she is, soothed my burnt ego as well as the singed hair on my arm. Did I mention the flare up? Well, no matter, put the fire out with the water in the tea pitcher/vase!

Of course, she's trying hard not to laugh, but not very hard though...cause a smile broke out, and the giggles started, and pretty soon we were guffawin together...and as I allus say, "a family that guffaws together, stays together"...so much for a ruined dinner...and a valentines day dinner at that.  Well, the extra V card I put in her lunch bag didnt hurt! I allus buy two or three cards, mainly because I cant seem to settle on just one! I like this one because it has a kitten on it, and that one because it has a puppy on it, and this other one, because it has a kitten AND a puppy...So much for not supporting the Card industry!

If I buy enough cards, instead of saving them for next year, which is dumb, cause I'm gonna lose em anyway, I give her one the day before, the morning of, and one in her lunch, and one when she gets home and smells that I've burnt dinner!!!!!! See how well that all worked out!  Almost like it was planned!

You know, if you soak one of those burnt pans all weekend in a bucket of Dawn, it almost goes back to normal!

Hey JAN! ! ! Thanks so much for that youtube video...man, that is so cool. I would like to try it, but only on the ground...terrified of heights...but, how cool was that, guys just stuck out a gloved fist, and voila, a hawk lands on it, whilst they are flying! ! !  Simply beautiful...I love raptors...

I'd be afraid of losing the hawk ! And I say that, because any crittter that shows up at my house, gets a name!!!  That's just the way it has always been with me!  "Oh look dear, Bobby Blue jay is in the back yard"! ! ! This name thing, applies to any living thing that shows up at our door..."uh Diane, get my shotgun, cause gary grizzly is at the front door"...

Oh, my bald eagle, Eddy, was here again Saturday. We took the boys for a walk around the lakes, and there he was, sitting in a huge oak. Didnt have my camera, hard to take pictures with a mastadon pulling on the leash.  He let us get within 50 feet of his beautiful self. Other folks were jogging or walking their dogs, and we got their attention and pointed up into the tree, and only a few were slightly curious...amazing!  One did say "oh wow"...I guess thats something!

Ok, time to go...I could type all night, and probably have too!
Happy birthday to all youse youtes, and happy Valentines day also too!

Hey...it's me again. go to you tube video, and then just type in "30 eagles", you dont need the quotation marks! It will bring up 30 eagles backyard...just click on that, and these people that live in unalaska, alaska have 30 plus eagles in their back yard...almost as amazing as gettin to fly with your favorite hawk!   Ok, think I'm gonna try to go to sleep...it's only 4:18...

Bucket list. My first 'adult' books were Michener's tome 'Hawaii' and Kipling's 'Kim'. I immediately put Hawaii and India   on my bucket list (later also Pakistan when I found that it had split from India). I was fortunate to be able to go to India & Pakistan a couple of times.  No Hawaii yet.  I did go to several 'Holy Land' places.  That was great but found that the Holy Land distances are small compared to Texas.  Have not made it to Israel yet and have a vague desire to go there before a war erupts.  Would like to spend time at the Smithsonian and other sights around D.C.     Maybe in a few years when I am retired...

Forewarning, the following is definitely under the category of bragging on your grandkids, and also more than a little ego-centric. But what the heck, we all are guilty of that every once in a while.

All four of our grandkids are special, each in their own way, and we love each of them them with all of our hearts. Granddaughter Jordan, who is 9 1/2 now, is the youngest of our four. She made me this poster / birthday card for my recent birthday and it demonstrates two of the many things we love about her, her creativity, and her sweet heart. Brought a tear to this old man's eye.

As a key to the candies on the above poster, they are chocolate heart, chewing gum, gummy bear, some kind of fuzzy/huggy ball thingie, hard candy, hershey's kiss.

Here is one of my favorite pictures of Jordan which was taken about 3 years ago down at Freer.

Well, I'll brag on a grandson - Grayson, age 10.  He was selected as 1 of 4 reps from all of Melissa ISD's 4th graders to represent them in UIL Math Competition.  Last Friday was their first competition and he "thought" he completed 13 questions (all has to be done in their heads - no paper, computers, etc.), but knew one of his teammates completed 18, so assumed that friend won.  We all congratulated him on doing so well in his first competition and he said "Mima, it was really, really hard."  We bolstered him up saying now he knew what to expect and it would be much easier next time, etc.  Well, on Monday he found out - HE WON THE WHOLE COMPETITION - #1 OUT OF ALL THE SCHOOLS!  So, his buddy did 18, but didn't get them all right.  What a fantastic surprise for him.

Howdy myne fyne waltrypynes...It's me again...well, whom else would it be this time  o the morn?   Hmmm, wait a minute, it's actually daylight outside...."Well, Johnny Ringo. You look like somebody just walked across yore grave"... One of my all time favorite scenes from Tombstone....Val Kilmer shoulda been nominated and won all awards for his portrayal of Doc Holiday...my old dentist! ! !

Remember Walter Pyes?  Rummaging through some boxes, found an old walter pyes hanger...also found some pictures yall might be interested in. But first, if ALL YALL  ever find yourself in Brenham, there are two places to eat that are OUTSTANDING! !!  One is on  the old square, just across the street from the courthouse on Alamo street, called YUMM....and brothers and sisters, it is just that! ! !

Another place is out at the airport just north of brenham off HWY 50....THIS PLACE IS THE MOST OUTSTANDING PLACE IN THE WHIRLD...Me and another biker rode to Brenham to look at some ammo at Ammo To Go, on hwy 50. He had eaten there many many time before and has been trying to get me to eat there! So Yesterday I did.....OMG ! ! ! ! ! ! !....(thats OH MY GOSH)...It is just about one of the best places to eat on oith!  Sat out on the patio and gazed out across a small lake. The patio is also screened in to discourage boids and bugs! ! !

Inside it is fixed up like an old MALT shop or large GIZMO! ! ! ! YEAH, THATS WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT! ! ! The waitresses all wear PINK POODLE SKIRTS... They even have a Wurlitzer Juke box. I think it is a new one that plays CD's....I dont recommend many places, but this one is a must try! ! ! Bring your appetite, cause they have lots on the menu...Meat loaf sandwiches for one, and the chicken fried chicken has got to be the lightest fried food I have ever eaten. As light as bignets! ! ! OMG ! ! !!  OH, AND LEST I FORGET,  THE ONION RINGS ARE THE BEST I HAVE HAD SINCE BILL WILLIAMS OR VALIANS! ! !

Gonna take my beloved there this saturday! ! ROAD TRIP! ! ! !  Wish I could get the WABEC group to meet there! We havent met in a coons age!

I found these old pictures on my computer...dont know where they came from, but if I had to guess, Scotty...he of phenomenal memory....

Sometimes up North you need a he-man snowblower.  This one can shoot snow 126 feet.  Move it from your front yard to your back yard!

Yup, not a one of those theaters are alive today...too bad so sad ! ! ! Thats a real early one of the Heights theater. Probably 30's ! ! ! I think there was another theater on 19th street closer to Yale st. I think the building is still there. Will have to check that one out. I went there for a "the con man is a saint" motivational meeting...only thing is, I didnt know it was that till I walked in...WOW! Some pretty delusional folks at that one. I left as fast as my feets would carry me out of there!

Just in case it gets leaked to the media, I am ok ! ! ! Yeah, tried to wrestle a grizzly bear, jaws, a lion, a tiger, a T-rex, a pteradactyl, and ride a rhinoceros all at the same time yesterday! Actually I was performing open  heart surgery on my left wrist. Yup, got blood on my hands now..."got blood on my face, a big disgrace, slamming my name all over the place...we will, we will rock you..."

Had to go to the ER and get some stitches...dang, and that was one of the things on my bucket list..."dont ever get stitches"....now I've got to change it ! ! ! "Dont ever get stitches...again"...
Actually I cut myself using a utility knife, (fancy name for a fancy box cutter).  Man, it bled like a stuck pig, or a cut wrist! Wrapped it in a kitchen towel, and it ate that one up, so had to get a second one. One of the cats was laying on one on the table, so I jerked it out from under her from outside the door, so I wouldnt get any blood in the house. She didnt appreciate that I'm sure.  Surprised she didnt do some blood letting of her own!

Knew I was gonna have to drive myself to the ER, and didnt want to get blood in my truck, so I broke out the emergency kit...DUCT TAPE AND TIE WRAPS ! ! !  I Duct taped it and then put a tie wrap on it so I could drive and not lose the towels...they were white, now they are crimson...

Called my beloved and asked if our insurance worked at Northwest hosp er...she said it did..."WHAT THE HECK DID YOU DO"  she says...Oh nothing much, just about cut my arm off..

WHAT A SCREWED UP PARKING LOT THE NORTHWEST HOSP HAS ! ! ! SOME BEAN COUNTER I SUPPOSE decided they had to have money for every square inch of cement.

Got a ticket from the ticket dispenser, and just for making me do that, I got blood all over it! Ha, mess with me will you!  Other than parking, checking in to the ER, is pretty simple.  After they flled out the paperless computer questionaire, a nurse wanted to see my wound...she asked me who wrapped it up! "I did" I said with great pride! She said she didnt have anything that would cut the tie wrap, so I said I have something in my pocket that will!  She said, youre not gonna cut yourself again are you? Actually it was a pair of sissors I usually cut things with. I whupped em out and cut the tie wrap and the duct tape.

Bout that time, my superior wrappings had drawn a crowd of nurses and interns and docs..."yeah, I'm bad"...the nurse says let me see the wound...I open er up, and sprung a leak...loooked like spindle top, only red... "Thar she blows" I say...."ok capt ahab, you can close er up now" says the nurse! ! ! Oh man, at last, someone with a sense of humor and wit to match mine! ! !

Well, to make a short story even longer, they shoot it up about half dozen times with some deadening stuff, and clean er up and stitch er up! Then they put a band aid on it...a DORA THE EXPLORA band aid...WHAT???? "dont I get a sling? A neck brace?" come on man, open heart surgery on my wrist, and all I get is a DORA THE EXPLORA band aid??? The nurse says they are out of SCOOBY DO band aids! ! !  Not even a HELLO KITTY band aid...OH THE HUMANITY ! ! !

I didnt even get any crutches, a walker, nothing...they didnt even wheel me out in a wheelchair...what's this whirld coming to ???

I've been convalescing at home...put out 10 bags of mulch, planted two rose bushes, moved the office around...no rest for the wounded! My little foray into the near death whirld woulda killed an ordinary man... I did fall asleep on the swing  with Jack...of course I had taken a #3 and got sleepy.  Just waiting for the love of my life to get home from a hard day at the knowledge factory!

maybe I can milk the sympathy routine somemore...ooooh dear, I feel faint, sweety can you get something for me to drink, and a snack?  I will keep yall apprised of my medical chart...maybe I can post a picture of my wound...wanna see it????
