What a great time at Clay's last night. Thank you Johnny for organizing it, and thank you to all who came from afar to make it such an enjoyable success.

Again this year a group of my friends and I got together on Saturday morning with our grandsons and sons and daughters and celebrated the opening of Texas' Youth Only Waterfowl Hunting Weekend with a duck hunt and sporting clays shoot. Friends Jamie and Debbie Lewis hosted us at their beautiful place near Garwood, Texas and a great time was had by all.

We posed for our group photo by honoring not only our Southern hunting and Christian heritage and tradition and the passing of the torch, but also to honor the Robertson family and the success of their TV show Duck Dynasty. Most of us older ones have known patriarch Phil Robertson for thirty years or more going back to the days when we used the early duck calls made by him by hand one at a time. As Wayne Lake recently so aptly stated on this forum, "Any show about a bunch of bearded rednecks, that starts off with music by ZZ Top, centers on catfishing, frogging, hunting, lawn mower racing, and razzing each other, and ends with the entire family having dinner together after the patriarch says the blessing, has got to be real". Amen Wayne!

We had five fine young men and one beautiful and sweet young lady (the six on the front row) as our youth participants. And the young lady out shot the guys on the sporting clays course. What a fun day. That's me and Gus on the far left and grandson Will in grey beard and holding ducks on the right front.

We had a blast at Clay's!  Had a headcount of 34 and some newcomers that we haven't seen in years - maybe since graduation!  Rosemary Richter and Sandra O'Connor honored us with their smiling faces!

Also out-of-towners we haven't seen in a while - Wendy Sherrill (North Carolina), Bradley Seals,Tom Gann, Lynn Bledsoe, Susan Howard, Mary Vaughan, Linda Webster, Marilyn Wolfe, Gary Jorden, Robert and Kay Derrick and Wayne Lake, if I've overlooked anyone, please excuse.  I'll post pictures soon under Fuddrucker/Houston by the Year tab.

BroBeau Wann, Charlie Burkhardt, Diane Cunningham '72 and Rosemary Richter

Just a sample of the fun!

Hugs,

J

After Charles got settled into the Baybrooke Village facility last Wednesday, he just never felt very well and started running a temperature Friday afternoon.  They did blood work and finally got an X-Ray last evening and this morning, the facility doctor sent him back to Baylor Heart Hospital.  He got into a room around 5pm and Infectious Disease doctor came by.  Blood work indicates he's got high white blood cell count, but havent narrowed down exactly what kind of infection.  Now, they've decided he's got an infection in his picc line and they are going to take it out and have it analyzed in the lab to see whether that could be the culprit.  Also, might be an infection caused by all the antibiotics they've been administering since Sept. 15 when he was hospitalized for pneumonia @ MD Anderson.  Very hard to understand how he could have been on so many antibiotics for such a long time and yet still be getting infections causing fever and overall discomfort.

I think he's actually very glad to be back @ Baylor Heart and not @ Baybrooke.  We'll see how long he has to stay here and where he will go next.  Doctor @ Baybrooke said he should have been sent to a long-term care facility rather than theirs because there would have been pulmonary specialists on call rather than just 1 doctor visiting Baybrooke twice a week.

Charles' sister Debbie and her husband George will be visiting tomorrow, so I know he'll be perked up when he gets to see them.

We are anxious to see all the photos from Clay's.  Johnny Sheffield was so sweet to call us that evening to tell us about the great turnout.  Sheffield, hope you know how much we all appreciate your organizing the Clay's events and the work of all the Reunion Committee on setting up our 50th.

Dittos Johnny. Great job again of setting up the mini at Clays. Prayers out to Charles. We want him back out on the golf course soon.

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

Wow!  What a turnout @ Clay's.  Jackie, thanks for all the photos and you looked absolutely fantastic.

Brantley, I've really enjoyed my Kodak easyshare camera.  Smaller than a cell phone, can fit in a pocket .  I got it when our granddaughter was born and I was babysitting so I could send photos to my daughter while she was working and wouldn't miss some "special" moments.  You can just run through your photos on the camera to show to friends (like a phone camera - but I think these are better quality), besides transferring to the computer to print or send in e-Mails or Facebook.

Susan Howard (Bowman)

Thank you, Jackie, for getting the pictures from Saturday night posted so quickly!  It was wonderful seeing you there and spending time with you!  You look great!  What a fun evening, and so nice to see some folks that either had not been to one of our get togethers or hadn't been around in awhile!  I was so sorry that I didn't get to visit longer with some of our out-of-towners!  Jimmie Lee and Charles, we really missed your presence there! You were in our thoughts and conversations constantly throughout the evening.  Of course, you also remain in our prayers. Keep looking up - this is going to get better!

Another big thank you to Johnny for making the arrangements for us to be at Clay's.  What a great place for us to all be together!  It was so much fun watching the middle schoolers attempt to party - several of us were tempted to get out there and show them how it's done!

10/29/13 12:38 PM #5963

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

Thank you Susan and all the rest that came - what fun and laughs!   A special thanks to Johnny for all his enthusiasm in  getting this together!  That Johnny knows how to party!

Charles and Jimmie Lee, glad you enjoyed the pictures and I hope it brightened your day.  We sure missed ya'll - but we're planning another Clay's around April, so we'll see you then!

Charles, you hang in there, each day will be better.  Sounds like you are getting the TLC you need and maybe check into that other facility for long term care for better service.  Infection could be from your PICC line -- that's what caused my demise last year when I had Viral Menengitis and went home with a PICC line resulting in a blood clot, even though I was taking Lovenox shots to prevent clots.  Figure that one out!  Hugs, J

Happy Halloween!

Black Jr. High Basketball players --- look at that cute Charles!

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

OK, Teddie, in the BB photo Jackie posted, who are the guys on either side of Charles?  I can name all the guys in the photo but those 2 - maybe because photo is so old?

10/29/13 08:35 PM #5965

Teddie Jordan

Old is part of it but also the black background makes all of them on the front row look like they have huge ears. I think neither of these wags are right but I'm going to guess Larry cooper on right and Tommy Tucker on left.

After everyone else guesses those two please give us the rest. I know several and always like seeing old pics of Ben Vanden Bosche. He was a nice guy.

10/30/13 08:03 AM #5966

Robby Wallis

#45 kinda looks like Allen Brown???  And, that's coach Ronnie Truitt, an outstanding coach, mentor and gentleman who left us way too soon.

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

May I ask who is the last person bottom right?

10/30/13 09:24 AM #5968

Larry Cooper '65

Teddie, was not  me or Tucker.  Tucker was in 7th grade and I was in 8th and was'nt good enough to make that team !!  Who would have figured ? I have no idea who they are.

10/30/13 10:01 AM #5969

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

Last person bottom right, depending on whether you're talking about player or manager - player - Bruno Leonardt and manager - Spanky Taylor I think?

10/30/13 10:19 AM #5970

Teddie Jordan

And I think Robby is right on Allen Brown (45) being the player to Charles' right.

What has happened to ben vandenBossche?

Beau Wann, Jr.

Good early morn myne fyne waltripynes!

Spring back or fall forward, back when we had to give a cat an insulin shot every 12 hours for 7 years, daylight savings time sure threw a kink into things. Guess the problem was overthinking the problem. Well no matter, Libbey has crossed the rainbow bridge some years back, and time means nothing to her.

As for the photo of the basket ball team, the onliest (east texas for only) one I recognasize is Charles! Maybe Rod King in there, but thats doing so without me eyeglasses! But I recognasize Charles anytime anywhere! Ben Vandenboshe?  Mind conjuring up a blank on that one. and I'm sure a swell fellow he!

Pat? You cant go wrong with a Cannon camera! They make the best in photo equipment.  I have had 6 nikons, and still have them, but they are FILM cameras, and are virtually of no use anymore. Hard to find someone to develope hard film these days, and the digital pictures are better and easier to work with. Took all my NIKON equip to camera exchange to see what they would allow for trade or cash money...$225.00 is all, for equipment that cost, at one time, in excess of 5K...Advanced technology is good sometimes, and sometimes not!

I, and a lot of folks I know, have Cannon EOS T2i's and or T3i and other models of the EOS REBEL. The T2i is very user friendly, mostly. I've sort of given up on photography due to failing eyesight. Back when I could see, these cameras would a been great. You can do so much with these new cameras and your picture program in your computer. You can crop and fix red eye and change exposure and color saturation etc...and the camera goes up to 6400 asa which allows for shots in low light without flash, which can ruin the mood of a picture.

Go on line to CANNON and you can see which one you like. I think I bought mine at Best Buy in a package with two lens and camera bag and whatever else it had for about 1k dollars. The prices have come down somewhat on the older models and up on the newer models. Check also with COSTCO, as they have just about the best prices on everything. For example, a blanket at Costco was 15.99 and same blanket at Bed Bath and beyond was 30 dollars. Near as I can figure, costco must be stealing them to give such a good price.

Oh, you can also get Cannon printers, my nephew, a pro photographer, says cannon printers are the best.

Yes, the Clays mini reonion was a goodun. Still not a lot of folks, but mostly the regular fudds guys and gals. and then some. Saw a couple of new faces, and didnot get to talk to them either. Didnt recognize their names, and now of course cant recollect the names at all.

Went to my sawbones, Ol Doc Holliday last week. Called on a Tuesday, expecting to probably wait for an appointment the following week, and wouldnt you know it, got one the same day, and only an hour and a half after I called. What the heck is up with that? The whole idea of calling for an appointment is so you can get better whilst waiting for the appointment to roll around, and not have to go at all! Jeeze, no wonder he's retiring!

I guess we're settled in to the rental cottage. Still have to go on a scavenger hunt when we think of something we need...like winter clothes! DUH! ! ! ! !  I found my sweat shirts, which IS my winter wardrobe, that and my jackets...I just love jackets and coats and hats and gloves and boots...well, clothes in general, but some more so than others!

Had to go to storage and bring our 17th century iron bed back to the cottage. We have separated...gone our separate ways...departed from one and other...well, one of us snores and one of us thrashes about, add that to the cats jumping on and off the bed, neither one can get any sleep.  I try to stay up till at least midnight, so I can sleep a few hours in the wee small hours of the morn, but rarely make it past nine. Diane's the same way. All she has to do is sit down and pick up something to read, and she is cuttin z s almost immediately! What the heck happened to our youte?

Of course I'm up at 1:30 or round abouts thereof. This morning I have washed a load of clothes, dryed and folded same. Washed dishes, made a pot of coffee, drank same! Had an organic free range Honey Bun!  Now, tippy typing on my commodore 64!

Got Four cats around me, two at my feet keeping them warm and one in my lap and one lapping over the keyboard with his tail. So I guess I have the warmest place to be. Checked the thermostat, and it says 67 inside. Dont know how to turn on the heater, cause the stat just says AC, and I certainly wouldnt want to burn the house down cause I didnt know what I was doing. Gonna get Jordans Air out and have them check it out. That ol boy Ha that is the field foreman, walks on water as far as I'm concerned. He is the best AC/Heating man in the whirld!

Nothing new on the new home. TOO MUCH RAIN! ! ! We couldnt buy rain in the last 5 years, and now we get 5 years worth in 5 days. This house aint never gonna git built!

Been a couple of beautiful days, and Sunday, today, is gonna be another. Thought about going to the Lone Star bike rally down in Galveston, but think I'll just remember the ones I went to in the past!  Think I'll play hooky from church and sleep in...Probably by the time church rolls around, I might be sleepy.  Then, when Diane gets home from church, go to Cajun Town for lunch! Best seafood place on the planet! The cook use to cook for Papadeaus, and it shows!

Wow, outside temp is 45 ! ! ! Can snow be far behind? Oh no, we'll be snowed in...oh the humanity! As my dad use to say, when it started getting cold, "it's snowing in Conroe", and I believed him too!

Hmmm, cats have all shuffled about, moved on...dang, I thought something was wrong, I'm freezing! ! ! ! Tha ingrates! I'd get back in the warm bed, cept I'd just thrash about, toss and turn etc...

Ok, time to sign off! "What so soon"? yeah yeah yeah, I know...well, it gets lonesome by yourself at 3 am, so you all are elected to be my best friends! No way to go wrong there!

Keep the sun at your six, well, not at 3 am, but later on when the lazy sol decides to getup, and ride boldly ride...
your frien and brother-in-classmate...freezing man

To Whom it May Concern:

I enjoyed seeing everyone at Clays, thanks to all that do the work to put these events together; Johnny, Jackie, Barbara, Lynn and I’ve probably left a few out. Man that Jackie is something else huh? I swear she looks better now than before taking all that chemo – I’ve always subscribed to the thought that women were truly the stronger of the species and she proves it! I would have liked to see more folks show up but I guess we got quality instead of quantity.

Can you believe it’s been nearly 50 years since the JFK assassination, November 22nd  1963, I think. I can still remember where I was when I heard the news, Mech. drawing class. I didn’t know much about JFK except that he was the 1st Catholic president and had a hot looking wife. I still would like to know who all was behind it and think that we may never know the truth.  I’m not a conspiracy theorist but there has got to be more to the story………………………………..

I fished East Matagorda on Mon-Tuesday with a friend that has a place at Caney Creek, West Galveston Bay on Friday with Jimmy Hilsher and planning on being on Aransas Bay on Tuesday and Upper Laguna on Wed-Thursday, trying to catch up on a coastal connection to replenish my salt water soul after a summer of strictly fresh water boating adventures.

Anybody hear how Gary Keith is doing? I was looking forward to seeing him as he indicated he might uproot from those Ark. hills for a few days if not to see us, his grandkids but maybe around our schedule. Regarding that Black BB team photo, what happened to Bruno and Spanky. Bruno used to make some of the get togethers and  Spanky and I got to be good friends during and after HS but he got pretty confused after doing a tour in Viet Nam and disappeared from sight.

Maybe David Blankenship will come South some time in order to avoid the cold winter where he lives?

Wayne, there is a good article in today's Chronicle, the Outdoor page in the Sports section, about a fisherman getting bitten by a gator last week in Matagorda Bay. He and two buddies had anchored their boat and were wade fishing about dawn. The buddies waded out on the bayside of the reef and were trout fishing, he decided to try the inside, a little more brackish water, for a redfish. What he got instead was bitten pretty good by a seven foot gator, they obviously also prefer brackish!

His name is Ray Sexton. The good news is that he was wearing ray guards, which as you know are a Kevlar reinforced shield for your lower legs that wade fishermen wear to help against sting rays, because he had been center punched by a ray pretty good without protection about 15 years ago and suffered a painful wound from the long venomous barbed spike they deliver. The guard absorbed most of the tooth impact from the gator.  I have a pair of ray guards but usually wear some snake leggings that I use in rattlesnake country, which are about the same but go a little higher. Anyway he was able to fight and kick and get the gator to release him and regained his footing, and hollered to his buddies who came and helped ward the apparently unafraid gator away long enough to assist him and make their collective leave. He had some bleeding but apparently will be OK. Had to be a little exciting.

As for a report on Gary Keith I don't have a recent one but will talk to Jimmy Stockton tomorrow and one of us will report back.

I don't have any recent contact with Bruno but he always faithfully attends the reunions that end with zero and I'm counting on him being there next October.

I also would love to see Spanky. I always enjoyed him and he and I went to church together, and while I shouldn't admit it because my beloved and dear Presbyterian mother is probably tuned in to this broadcast in Heaven right now, Spanky and I used to skip a Sunday school class together from time to time and ride around and terrorize Oak Forest for an hour instead. I hope he's doing good.

And the way I read it Blankenship has committed to Jimmie Lee that he will be there next year to see the big dance. I'm really looking forward to seeing that old rascal as he and I had some memorable times back then too. The last time I saw you David was back when you had the good restaurant on Fountainview right off of Westheimer, however many thousand years ago that was.

Unless something has happened in the past year, Bruno & Bonnie live in Houston.  None of their Christmas cards have been returned, so I'm assuming they still live in the Memorial area.

Yesterday, Charles had the drain tube removed and he moved to Life Care in Plano.  It's a long-term, acute-care facility (basically, another hospital).  He'll be there for 3 weeks (term Infectious Diseases physician wants Charles to have IV antibiotics).  He'll be monitored 24/7 for blood pressure, heart rate, etc., and they'll keep up with his temperature so we'll know whether he's developed any more infection.  He will also have physical rehab.  He's pretty sore from the robotic surgery and the drain tube.  Nothing ever showed up from all the lab tests they did on the infection they removed before inserting the drain tube last week, nor from the picc line they tested.  Considering everything he's been through, Charles looks better now than he has in about 2 months.  The nurses at the facility were amazed that he walked in there on his own (most patients are rolled in on gurneys).  His hair continues to grow in (mostly dark) and his beard remains dark.  The next 3 weeks will probably be difficult for him as he's feeling much better, but he's confined to Life Care.

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

Appriciate your report, Jimmie....sounds as if progress is being made.  Funny thing about those infections isn't it.  How they skipped reasoning...Charles, praying and hoping that your stay is health-fulfilling, and S H O R T, and home is on the horizon.  Ya'll take care.

Teddie Jordan

Just got a good report from Gary Keith. He is back home after his quadruple heart bypass surgery about three weeks ago, and rehab, and is making good progress. Both sons, his mom and brother and sister and a lot of other family have been there rooting him on and have all gone home now.

His son and brother cut him two cords of firewood while they were there and he is set up for winter in the mountains. And he is definitely enjoying Lois' home cooking much more than hospital fare.

Keep doing good old friend.
