Beau Wann, Jr.

I forgot to mention that I heard from Jimmie Lee today methinks. With all that she has on her plate, she emailed me to see how we were doing!  Anyway, charles is having a rough time of it the last couple of days. Feels just terrible. He's had pneumonia about 4 times this year. So, everyone say a goood prayer for Charles, Jimmie Lee and family. Send some healing thoughts and prayers to Charles tonight before you retire for the evening.

KAY! ! ! ! Howdy! sure is glad to hear from you! "sure is"? My mind sure does go in different directions at the same time! Great to hear from you! I cant believe I missed the shroom festival again. Ding dangit! ! ! Bandera and Fredricksburg are beautiful, especially on a motorcycle. Utopia and Leaky are great too.

Of course anywhere in Texas is a good place to be, cept maybe the big city!   4 ladies on a trip? Hmmm...My first and last trip with a bunch of guys, ie my MC trip to D.C. for rolling thunder in 12, I always got a separate room. the rest of the guys doubled up or even tripled up to save money. Money is an important thing, but my quiet solitude at the end of the day is more important! ! !

I remember my last days in the Patrol Squadron in the Navy. We got a new old guy in, that snored so loud, he sounded like a grizzly bear trying to sing! If you came in after this guy went to bed, you could forget about going to sleep. Some of us would go out and sleep in the planes, or anywhere you could find to get away from the noise!

Went to sleep towards the end of the Dallas Cowboy game, dont know who won...dont really care! They dont show the cheerleaders near enough, dontcha think? Anyway, guess I went to sleep too early, cause I've been up since 3. Made a cup O Joe, and all the cats came a runnin for something to eat. I hate to turn down Katy and Peaches, cause they are so thin. Annie-Bob is getting to look like a pot bellied pig...tha big pig...big olie just licks at the canned food, but really likes the crunches better! guess it reminds him of the bones crunching in a mouse! Now there's a really great thought! Keep it up mister and we'll just have your credentials pulllllled!

My youngest borrowed Pegasus (my motorcycle for those just tunning in) to ride in a benefit that I'm still not clear on! It was sponsored by "Mattress Mac" (who else) and the "blue Knights", (motorcycle cops) and others. They rode to Galveston and back with full police escort. Kevin said that there were a lot of nuns riding on three wheelers and side cars and on the back of bikes. He said that a nun rode on the back of my bike...now that tears it, I specifically said before he left, "NO NUNS" are to be riding on my bike...but nooooooo, did he listen?

He said her name was Sister Joyce, and she was a fun nun! ! ! She had never been on a MC before, and just giggled and laughed the whole trip. Well, I guess it was a good thing, cause my son could use the protection. He's the one that got hit down on the Kemah bridge a few years back. Broke his lower right leg in four places, with all the different breaks you can have. Now has a titanium rod  in that leg! He said he wasnt too nervous going across that bridge, and pointed out to the spot to sister Joyce where it happened and told her about it when they stopped.

He also sent a picture to me of the Christian Motorcycle Club praying over my bike and blessing it. Even got a sticker for my windshield. Now you cant beat that, a nun rode on it, and it was blessed...what more could a feller want?

They didnt start back till 5:30 Saturday eenin because of the rain. Whew, I'm sure glad of that cause rain is hell on a motorcycle and it's rider, blessed or not! He got back safe and sound and put it in the garage and picked up his truck and drove home and slept till Sunday morn late. We were at a wedding when he got back.

I did notice when we got back from the wedding that Pegasus sorta glowed, and had a shinny halo over him! Need to wash it with a high pressure hose cause the Galveston air encourages rust! ! !

I guess to recap that day, my son had fun with a nun under the sun on a benefit run and now it's done...hun! ! ! ! !     OH STOP IT RIGHT THIS MINUTE, YOURE MAKING ME KRAZY! ! !

Speaking of weddings, the one we went to was a good one...sort of...I mean, I'm just not a wedding kind of guy...that belongs to the ladies! ! ! The young man and woman getting married are soon to be doctors. They start their residency this next year, and they are both going to be pediatricians! Stephen, the groom, is the son of a long time friend from church. Stephen and his brother Dillon were in my Sunday school class, and Dianes sunday school class, plus she had them in the childrens choir.

It's amazing how quick they grow up. They were so small and cute back 20 or 30 years ago...now they are tall and handsome men, and both turned out so well too! Dillon is a math teacher and coach at a katy or cyfair school, and of course I already mentioned Stephen is a doctor. His new bride is also a doctor, and is just stunningly beautiful and as tall as Stephen. He is 6'6" if he's an inch. When they greet me, they have to bend over to give me a hug! Well, as long as I get a hug, I dont care if I have to stand on a chair!

The wedding and reception was held at the Vineyard, which use to be a church, at the corners of Michaux and 11th street. Key street is behind it, right where the garage apt we stayed at back in the late 40's and 1950. We moved to Dubarry in 51 methinks!

Diane and I couldnt remember what the name of the now defunct church was, but it is the one with the steeple that you can see at the end of 11th street. A Methodist church was directly behind the garage apt on Key st, which is literally a stones throw from the church that is now a Wedding place...I thought it was either west end baptist or east end baptist...Well, depending on where you were physically, it was either east or west...eh what?

Poor Peaches, she just howls day and night. Dont know what to do for her other than what we have been doing, thyroid pills and high blood pressure pills, and food and water! She doesnt like to be held, never did, so cuddling her for any length of time is out of the question! Well, she is 18 now and in cat years thats...hmmm, carry the 3...bout 72 years old for a kitty. Maybe I should sit her on my blessed bike...bless her heart!

Ok, now she has awakend my beloved and her savior. gotta make more coffee! Maybe some scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast! Yall keep the sun at your six and ride boldly ride...with a nun if you can...

Charles has been having quite a bit of pain on his left side under his rib cage and still been hurting in all his joints.  Had established a relationship with a pulmonologist, hoping next time he had a temp we could call him and not have to go to ER.  Well, last week, he started coughing a lot of stuff up and continued with the side pain, which got worse and his breathing was really labored and it was not sounding good. Tried to reach pulmonologist last Friday, but missed him and Charles did not want to go to ER.  He was not running a temp, so we waited until today to call pulmonologist again.  He didn't have time to see Charles and said he should go to ER.  So, we came into Baylor McKinney around 10am.  ER doctor discovered Charles had an air pocket on the outside of his lung and it had collapsed his lung.  Dr. said air got out through a hole, which would heal.  Had to do a surgical procedure on him (without any pain meds or sedation) to cut a hole in his side and insert a tube to let air come out.  Well, it was really, really painful, but he grabbed my hand and held on through the whole deal.  Then they did an X-Ray to make sure tube was in correctly, and decided it was in too far, so they made an adjustment and did another X-Ray and decided it was OK.  Then we had to wait to have him taken for a CT scan and then into ICU.  There is lots of fluid and "gunk" coming out of that tube.  They are testing it to see what kind of infection it is.  Haven't heard CT scan report yet.  His Coumadin level was totally out of whack, so had to give him Vitamin K (which is what he can't have while he's taking Wahfarin to control Coumadin level to prevent blood clots and possible stroke).  Said as soon as that's leveled out, they'll get him back on his Coumadin regimen and get it straight again.  His heart rate is totally high, so they're administering additional afib meds through IV along with lots more antibiotics to try to get everything under control.

Our son Chad came in when he got settled in ICU to keep me company and find out what was going on.  Betsy is running the business beautifully during all this this whole year and we're so proud of her dedication while keeping up with her family and us.  Kingslea has been a real help to us all year keeping our dogs when we have to make our trips to MD Anderson and doing whatever we need help with.  And Chad has kept up with what we needed and had to do some repairs at the lake to keep everything going up there.

Please keep Charles in your prayers.  This is one of the toughest times he's had during this journey.

Charles and Jimmy, glad to hear from you although it has been a painful one to read, and a really painful time for Charles.  Sounds that the ER trip was certainly in order, praying and hoping Charles gets quick relief as soon as possible.  Ouch, no anesthesia? Wicked ER.

and the support keeping up with your animals, home and lake home......blessed!!

Amen on Jackie being outstanding!

The Beach Boys had kind of a surprise guest playing backup guitar in their band, a guy named John Stamos, a TV actor. I didn't know much about him, but Fran and every other lady in there from 8 to 80 did, and got real excited and energized, and went kind of crazy over him. You'd have thought Elvis or the Beatles had just shown up. Apparently he's kind of handsome and he had on some skin tight black jeans so that probably had something to do with it too. I will say he played guitar pretty good and they eventually let him sing the lead on a song and he was pretty good at that too. He even played the drums for a while and he's definitely a talented guy.

Afterwards I thought about maybe trying to get me a pair of jeans like his, but I doubt that Academy even carries them, and if they do they probably don't make them in relaxed fit.  And also if I tried to wear them as tight as his were I doubt I could even walk, and I damned sure couldn't climb up into my old truck. So I guess I just stick with my Wranglers.

Teddie,  John Stamos was "Blackie" on General Hospital a hundred years ago and he was also a teen heartthrob singer in his day.  Glad he can still perform.  He's still acting on USA channel in "Necessary Roughness" as well as doing Broadway shows.  Glad y'all had the Beach Boy experience.

Ran into classmate and old friend Skip Bresk and his lovely wife Charlene at a Mexican food place over by Memorial City while having dinner with Lisa and her two sons last night. Skip asked me to extend his regards to everyone and hopes to make the fiftieth next year. He said he reads the website fairly regularly in trying to keep up with the class.

Like all of us high mileage vehicles he has had his share of serious health problems, in his case associated with his heavy exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. But he looked good, still has that great smile, plays golf almost everyday at Champions, and is still going strong.

It was really good to see him.

I think you guys picked the correct split-off band to see.  Mike Love's group seems to understand that the old farts come to hear the music they grew up with.  They were in Galveston a week ago and did two sold out shows at the opera house (yes, I understand your heart throb, John Stamos was there).  Brian Wilson's group was here the week before that and did not sell out his one concert here.  I met Brian at the meet and greet with the 50th concert tour last year and, as best as I can tell, he is a living zombie.  Brain must be fried on too many drugs.  He wrote some great music back when, but his only interest at the meet and greet was to keep asking his "keeper" when he could go to eat.  Oh well, they did put on a great show.

Charles will be having a robotic surgical procedure tomorrow @ 12:30 here @ Baylor Heart Hospital - Plano.  His left lung is collapsed and he's breathing with only his right lung.  There is fluid & infection inside & outside his lung and they've been draining that for 2 days.  The procedure is designed to get in and clean out all the infection and then hopefully his lung will inflate.

Dr. George Simon (our main doctor @ MD Anderson) has conferred with Dr. Kim Jett (Cardio Thoracic surgeon here at Baylor) and also all of Charles' cardiology physicians, and they feel he is up for the procedure & since we are in one of the best heart hospitals, there will definitely be plenty of cardiology support during surgery.  Dr. Simon called me this morning and was totally assuring that Dr. Jett's procedure is the best route for Charles @ this point - have to get all the fluid and infection out.  While Dr. Jett is in there, he's going to get a sample of the tumor for a biopsy (something we'd declined in September because of Charles' afib history).

Dr. Jett says Charles should be released 3 days after the surgery and will be able to drive and get back to normal activity (have almost forgotten what that is) very soon after going home.

We thank each of you for your prayers, e-Mails, texts, etc.  I've been reading all his messages to him and it truly brightens his attitude.  I will post his progress following surgery.

I don't like large crowds so concerts are not my thing, but I really enjoy going to Cynthia woods pavilion because the groups I like don't do outdoor light shows.  Beau and I will have to take a trip outer to see one of our alternative or garage bands.  I'm sure Diane will come, but Ron would rather have dental surgery.

Waiting to hear from Jimmie lee.   Praying for them lots.

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

He's out of surgery.  Dr. Jett came out to talk with us, said everything went well.  His heart rate did go haywire at first, but they got it under control and no more problems during the procedure.  Said they got lots of infection & fluid out - in lung and around heart and outside lung.  Sending sample to pathology for testing.  Said his lung is pretty much shot from radiation.  Part of lung around tumor is stuck to tumor - didn't have my wits about me to ask how big it looked, I'll ask tomorrow.  Said they tried to inflate lung after completing clean-out and not much success.  They removed the large drain tube and sewed up that hole and left 2 small tubes in - one to drain fluid and one for air.  They will leave the ventilator in until tomorrow morning  I asked whether they'd keep him sedated as he'd be pulling at the ventilator and he said they would (but even after heart surgery, with sedation, he was yanking at it anyway - he hates them).  Will take 48 to 72 hours to see whether lung will inflate.  Is surprised that he wasn't septic and died because of all the infection.  Pulmonologist talked with me at his room and said he didn't see anything except mucous when he did the bronchoscopy.  I asked whether he'd seen other lungs a bad as Charles' and he said, "Oh yeah."  Thankfully right lung looks healthy, so it will have to pull the weight until left lung inflates (if it does).  If it doesn't, they'll go from there and decide what can be done.

Haven't gotten to see Charles yet - they are getting him set up in his room.  God answered lots of prayers - he made it through surgery and so far so good.  Charles' brother Brad (the youngest Brawner) drove up from Houston to be with us and is driving back home tonight.  Thanks so much for all your prayers and support.  Will keep you posted when we get any new reports.

Just talked with Charles this morning before I head out and he sounded good (actually, after they pulled out the ventilator, his voice sounds more like his normal voice than it has in months).  Our daughter, Betsy, predicted that maybe the ventilator would get his voice back?????????????  Will wait and see - he was scheduled to get the vocal chord repaired Oct. 24 and now it's cancelled until 3 weeks following his release from hospital.  They got him out of bed and into a recliner for about 3 hours yesterday afternoon until he said his rear was killing him.  Takes a village to get him transferred to/from bed as he's got a million tubes and wires in him.  He said they woke him every hour to poke and prod (I reminded him everyone is diligently monitoring everything so he doesn't develop more infection).  Infectious Diseases doctor said he's had a strep infection (go figure).  I asked whether any one of our family could have brought that strain to him and he said, "No."  All the doctors insist this was caused by all the radiation and chemo he's had as it totally lowers the immune system.  They don't seem to think his lung is going to reinflate, but since his right lung is healthy, he should be able to resume physical activity (GOLF) within 2-3 months.  He won't be able to walk the course - will have to use cart - but he can gradually work into increasing number of holes he can play.  Didn't see the surgeon yesterday, but the Acute Care Pulmonologist has been excellent in visiting and monitoring and informing us what is going on.  He's off this weekend, but assured us his associate will be in charge.  Y'all have been so diligent in your support and prayers - THANK YOU SO MUCH!
