Susan Howard (Bowman)

Well, Wayne, it is so nice to be missed!  You motivated me to say "hello", although I read the Forum almost everyday!  I just returned Friday from our family cabin in Lake City, CO, where, like you are experiencing, it was so cool and nice every day!  Had the heater on a couple of mornings it was so chilly!  We were there almost the entire month of August - got out of the Texas heat for awhile.  Colorado is in a drought almost as bad as the one here, but it did rain while we were there - those nice afternoon showers that are so common in the mountains.  We saw where the big fire was near South Fork and also Creede - so many trees gone!  At least those two wonderful little historic towns were saved!  The pine beetles are also terrible in that area as they are in a good portion of Colorado - they haven't made it over Slumgullion Pass as yet to Lake City.  Pretty soon only aspens and cedar trees will be left!

Take care everyone and try to stay cool!  Looking forward to seeing all of you at the mini-reunion the end of October!

Teddie Jordan

Susan, good to hear from you and glad you got a month of early fall in the mountains. Can't wait until we get our first cool morning here, hopefully in a few weeks.

And the wonderful name of Slumgullion Pass has got to be on the list of greatest all time most colorful names, along with some of our Texas favorites like Dime Box, Cut N Shoot, Nada, No Trees, and Muleshoe!

And I always loved hearing stories of the sound of the old  East Texas railroad conductor's call of the upcoming stops as he sung, Tenaha, Timpson, Bobo and Blair. It later became a popular gambler's exhortation to bring good luck as they rolled the dice. Never worked for me. East Texas native Dandy Don Meredith brought the saying back into vogue with his Monday Night Football broadcasts back in the 70's and 80's.

Thanks, Teddie, for the  story ...you were  too honest to be a lawer.  Watching last weeks Texas A&M game vs. Rice. They were ahead, until Johnny Manziel came in.. Unfortunately Mr. Big Ego came in with inappropriate atttitude, but had the capability to beat them. I am into the PGA golf tournaments,  thinking about taking it up myself.

Susan,

Your message brought back fond memories. In the 70's I rode horseback much of the area around Slumgullin Pass from a base camp about 9600' elevation between Creed & Lake City. What a beautiful place it is!

Great to hear from you.

Susan Howard (Bowman)

Hey David!  That area is beautiful and it's nice to know someone who actually trekked it on horseback!  Highway 149 over Slumgullion is now paved all the way, but when you were there (unless you have been back since then) it was pretty much a gravel road.  It was like that when my folks first found and fell in love with Lake City, and I don't think it was paved all the way over until the early 80's.  Was your base camp near Deer Lakes?  There is a campground there and it is at the Slumgullion Pass peak. You may have been on either side of the pass, but I bet you know where I mean. I have some pictures from there which I need to download, then I'll post some on the Forum.  I had the special treat of being able to photograph some bull moose there before we came home.  There were supposed to be 19 moose in the area, but I only saw 2.  However, that's more than I've ever seen there - I think they hide!  Got some great shots!  You would be surprised at how many Texans occupy Lake City in the summer!

Nice to hear from you, too!

Pat Brantley (Ross)

I am not trying to start a debate, but we have a number of people who have served in combat.  I would love to hear from you about Syria.  I have been praying and reading all sorts of articles.  Please tell me what all of your opinions are.

Jackie Crowe (Finch)

David,  Same here --- great to hear from you!!!!   Please let us hear more from you!  I hope you're coming to 50th Class Reunion next year -- mark your calendar - October 18, 2014.  The Woodlands Resort & Spa.  Better see you there!

Susan, I bet it was hard to leave your beautiful place in Colorado.  Looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Teddie, yes you were just a baby in that photo with Ms. Keller.  It was the '62 year book, love your story behind it!

Scotty, sorry about Alan Wamble and those pictures of Baptist Temple sad.  How are you doing?  How's your arithritis?  Hope you and Lola will be at Fudd's next Tuesday.

Pat I'll leave the debate up to the guys on Syria - Burgess where are you?  I know BroBeau is busy with his move and building his place in Chapel Hill.  Doug Romans where are you -- come on guys would like to hear from y'all.

I guess I left some of you dangling from my last MD Anderson report that I was seeing Dr. Arun and hoping that my last chemo would really be the LAST.  So here's my update --

I saw Dr. Arun and no more chemo!  She’s switching me to the Endocrine Therapy (pill form) since my PET scan didn’t show any significant changes from the last one.    I’ve come to a plateau with my Taxol.  I’ve actually had chemo for 10 months now (26 treatments – 6 FEC and 20 Taxol) and it’s time to stop – hope all my side effects go away!  The neuropathy in fingers and toes and tingling in my right arm, losing toenails and fingernails, etc. is getting the best of me -- kind of clumsy, but hopefully soon it will diminish.  Good news - my hair is growing back and I now have some eyebrows and eyelashes, can even wear mascara!

Of course there will be some side effects with this new med – Anastrozole (hot flashes, mood swings, bone weakness, etc.)  but I’ll deal with whatever I have to.  I don’t see Dr. Arun again for 3 months – that is really scary since I have been on a weekly basis at MDA.  But this is good --- I’ll still have some trips there for Coumadin check and once a month I’ll have the Zometa (bone builder) medicine (not a chemo).  That procedure takes about 30 minutes via IV (Power Port).  At least I'll get a little break from MDA.  I'll have another PET Scan mid November and see Dr. Arun for results.  Please pray this new treatment works!

Everyone have a great weekend and I hope to see y'all at Fudd's next week - Tuesday, September  1 0.

Hugs,

J

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

Thanks, Jackie, for posting the reunion committee meeting photos.  You look fantastic!  So glad your treatment regimen has changed to something easier and pray all your hindrances from the chemo fall by the wayside.  You go, girl!!!!!

Teddie Jordan

Jackie, great news on your being through with chemo, and that your body can start getting back to normal, which it will. Ten months and 26 treatments is a long, long time.

And what a great early Christmas gift for all of us that we can start seeing you on a regular basis again!

Uncompaghre Peak (over 14,000 ft.)  from Windy Point about 15 minutes from Lake City, CO, travelling south over Slumgullion Pass to Creede.  I bet you know where this is, David!

Bull moose at Deer Lakes near Slumgullion Pass.  This was a treat as I haven't seen a bull before, just cows.

Deer Lakes - there are several of these lakes and also a beautiful campground - great fishing and many photo opportunities!  This shot does not show the mountain vista which is to the right - beautiful, too!

Okay - I know these are too big.  I need to work with our picture program a little more to figure out how to downsize them some.  This is an absolutely gorgeous place just a short drive from our cabin.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hello mine waltriptexians...so glad to see the chatter on the forum...SUSAN ! ! !!  Wonderful pictures, thank you for posting them. That kind of scenery is just mangificent. Been a "Rocky Mountain Man" sort of guy mine whole life. Yeah, that cool weather is hard to take isnt it! It was 80 this morning out by the cement pond. Me and Jack and Big Oliver went out there and sat on the swing before daybreak, and all of us fell asleep.  Next thing we remember, Diane was waking us up along with that "lucky old sun".

Yeah Kay, I'm with you about mr ego and a and m. Truth be told, I really dont like football anymore, or baseball, or really any sport. I use to love football, and could not wait till the college season and pro season started. Havent felt like that in 5 or more years. I havent a clue who won the super bowl and whirld series the last 10 years...

Guess it's just one of the many "passages" we go through. I only watch NASCAR because my son likes to watch it, and GOLF, because my other son likes it. Was watching TV with my grandson, and he was flippin around to all the stupid so called reality shows, (you want reality, get old)  and I finally said to lite on something good, so he turned to NASCAR. I told him I really didnt want to watch that unless he did, and I only watched it because his dad watches it. He started laughing and said he really didnt like NASCAR, and he only watched it because his dad watches it. Hmmm, I wonder if Kevin watches it because he thinks Taylor and I like it?

Round and round we go eh! ! !

Hey Pat, in my humble opinion, we should not be in the middle east, except to support Israel...PERIOD! ! ! The muslim tribes have been fighting each other since the beginning of time...as well as all the different african tribes...wonder why we havent interfered with all those different african tribal wars! ! ! Now, my  leanings are, I'm about 12 aircraft carriers to the right of Attila the Hun, but I dont want to interfere where I know I (America) am not welcome ! ! ! Just dont bring the fight to me, and if you do, I will annilate whosoever does! ! ! Then maybe they and others wont do it again! ! !  Let them fight it out, and solve their own problems, which they never will, because they are mostly uncivilized, and living and thinking the way they did from the beginning of time! They still live in the desert, and have made no strides to advance their society!

(remember Pol Pot? He had doctors, lawyers, teachers, musicians, intellectuals, educated people killed, because he and his ilk wanted to live in the past, the so called simple life, and didnt want the aforementioned groups to interfere! ! !) America did nothing about it, and there were atrocious civil rights violations commited, not to mention a million plus murders...hmmm, maybe a million or more murders is not a civil rights violation!!! Gee, wonder what is! ! ! Seems there was another gentleman, Hitler I believe was his name, he was just the opposite, he wanted to get rid of what he deemed was the riff raff, jews, gypsys, blacks, sick lame and lazy, uneducated people, and anyone not of the "pure race" German aryans...and Hitler was not even German...but Austrian...

The muslims dont want "their" women to get an education, to be anything other than the slaves they are. That alone should get the blood boiling in ALL WOMEN everywhere, especially in this country. Wonder why it hasnt!  Where are the civil rights leaders?????   The women that should be leading the charge in that area, should have started with the women in congress, first ladies, any woman in a position of governmental power...but where is the outrage?

The women leaders should be screaming at the top of their lungs, everyday, all day long, about the treatment of muslim women! ! ! They should be marching in the streets of every country, until these barbaric practices against women are stopped,  especially here in America, land of the free and home of the brave...but they're not...why not???? Well, it isnt convenient for one, and for another, there is no political or monetary gain.....

The leaders of this country are all indignant and self righteous when it comes to dealing with countries with bad track records in "civil rights violations" ie just about every country we STILL do business with. If enslaving women and honor killings are not a violation of civil rights, then I dont know what is! It can be said, that we ought to mind our own business, right?  Ok, then lets do just that! ! ! ! And all the other countries should mind their own business when it comes to America...right?

HONOR KILLINGS???? you have got to be kidding me...all I hear is just a smattering of grumbling in this area...I hear tell, that this new regime in America, is trying to allow "SHIRIA LAW" to become active in this country....soon, I guess they will amend the constitution to allow for "honor killings" instead of divorce! My question, is who will be "stoned", husband? or wife? or children?

I read where a muslim father, here in America, land of the free and home of the brave,  killed his two daughters because they had become too "westernized"....way to go pop! YOU CAME TO AMERICA, you had to know what you were coming to, unless of course, you dont follow the age old custom,  "WHEN IN ROME"....Does that mean, that we can come to your country, and do the same?  I cant believe there are people out there that want to carry on a dialogue with these people, and get them to be "reasonable"...oh yeah, all depends on whose definition of "reasonable" you use...right? you might as well try to talk a grizzly bear out of eating you for dinner!!!!!!! And I hate to denegrate the majestic grizzly bear by comparing them to these...savages! ! !

Why, did you know that the "American Indian, Native Americans, "THA NOBLE SAVAGE", (I find nothing noble about them at all) all use to fight each other? Yup, hard as that is to believe, they fought over things such as horses, food, territory, hunting rights, and to prove they were fierce warriors, and just about anything that they deemed valuable..and they even captured other "indians" and enslaved them, as well as the new comers, tha white people....they were savages then, and that kind of behavior in the 21st century is still practiced in other countries, and by same kind of people...uncivilized savages! ! ! !

Before I am labeled "an injun hater", I have admired the indians ability for survival and stamina and horsemanship, allthough they did mistreat their livestock, as well as their women. Did you also know that the "five tribes in the east, Hurons, Irroquois, Mohicans and two others I cant remember, and I may have it backwards, but the five tribes were led by a...gasp, a WOMAN! ! ! The matriarch! ! ! ! Wonder how she fell from grace ! ! ! (an aside here, the Irroquois were labeled as rattlesnake people, because they were the worst of the worst in treatment of any unfortunate soul that should find them selves captured by these SAVAGES. And a woman was leading them....hmmmm...

America has never been welcome, no matter where we have been, even when invited, except maybe getting rid of hitler, and then we quickly wore out our welcome. Politics has no business being involved in war...politics, is generally what gets us in a war in the first place, and causes much grief to the ones that are placed in harms way. Of course, having said that, there are always exceptions to the rule, and for that matter, all rules. But you have to be smart enough, to know where and when not to get involved, and for the most part, the elected morons dont seem to have that ability! ! I have followed, retroactively, politics from the revolution, and actively, till now, and politics went down hill from then till now.

Russia fought in Afganistan for 15 years, with us suppling arms to the ones the russians were fighting. Now we are fighting those same people, and they are using our weapons against us, and I'll just bet the Russians are laughing their collective asses off because we are (the political powers that be) stupider than the Russians!  (also, the Russians and the chinese were supplying North vietnam and north korea with arms to fight us).....Now I know folks will be saying, "but those people are hurting other people, using poison gas to keep their people in line,  and we just cant allow that"..."so we will send all our young men in there and get them killed and maimed and cause grief to all their families, because we cant allow that" and all for a "just cause"...YEAH RIGHT! The folks that want to help, let them all go...you start sending politicians and well meaning do gooders to war, and I guarantee you, war will cease to be! ! ! !

I am not opposed to helping others, but only if you take the politics and politicians out of the equation! Let the warriors fight...let the red cross administer help...let the churches help...let anyone help that wants to, BUT POLITICIANS STAY OUT OF IT! ! ! !

As an active member of the PATRIOT GUARD, I have ridden in many funeral processions and stood at attention with the American Flag that the soldier or marine died for, or thought he or she was defending, and watched many many times, the anguish suffered by the family of the fallen service man or woman, and it is just too too too much...every stinkin politician should have to shoulder the burden that the families carry, but they dont! ! Oh well, all in the name of democracy, right? ...whatever the cost...to others! ! ! !

My God, I could go on and on about the attrocities this country has commited to it's own people by the politicians in power, all in the name of "justice, right, and sadly God"  and it's all about "power"! ! ! Of course this kind of talk, if monitored by the present regime, is classified as "terroist...hate speech...seditious"... It's amazing how a corrupt government hates the truth, and ours is just about as corrupt as any there is. To get to where I am, you have to read read read, and read somemore. Follow the money, the quest for power, who stands to gain from whatever actions are being called for. THE LOBBYs...big business and big government.

Just look at our past records, Korea, Vietnam, just to name two...now it's Iraq, Afganistan, and soon to be Syria, and then probably Iran, and on and on ad nauseum...Putting all the above out of your mind, and only thinking "good thoughts", hoping and wishing, and praying, hasnt changed a thing, and wont change anything, unless ALL PEOPLE do it, and ALL PEOPLE ARE NOT GONNA DO IT! ! ! Believe, there are people out there that just hate others, and will do anything necessary to destroy those they hate...hate is a terrible thing isnt it!

Have I thoroughly confused and and made you mad? I hope not, but the truth is what it is, the truth, and not just how I see it, but how history has recorded the truth. Eventually a lie told as the truth, has a way of surfacing, like our treatment of native americans, and veterans to name two groups.

You ever wonder about the difference in treatment an active veteran gets as opposed to the "has been veterans" like me and our classmates and those that came before us, and even the veterans not on active service today that have fought in Iraq and afganistan etc? It's like, "we dont know you now"! ! ! They sure as hell knew us when we went in harms way for em (the politicians)! ! !

Remember WWI ? President (we will not fight a war overseas) Wilson and congress promised the WWI vets a bonus and other things they were not gonna follow through on, if they would join up and help put the "dirty hun" in his place. Well the Marines and Army and Navy did just that. Did congress follow through with their promises? Not just no, but hell no. When the vets marched on D.C., to get what they thought they justly deserved and was promised them,  they were fired upon by our own military led by the likes of Capt Eisenhower, and other officers like Patton, MacArthur, Bradley, Truman etc. All names that are revered in the military history books...I know, they were just following orders from their superiors...but where does it all end?

I hope you dont hold the above disertation against me, it's just how I see things have turned out and how we are where we are...once again, if one thirsts for truth and righteousness, ya gotta read read read...everything, even things that are distateful...

Hmmm, there goes the smoke alarm...breakfast is ready! Guess I'll go see what culinary delight ol Hop Sing and Wishbone have cooked up for our dining pleasure!

Keep the sun at your six, and ride boldly ride, but safely...

Oh, we are getting down to the wire, and still havent found a place to live...homelessness is looming mighty large on the horizon...Well, anyone that thinks like me, ought to be homeless, eh what!

Beau Wann, Jr.

My sentiments perzactly Scotty...Dont want to crash that party atall! ! ! Wouldnt surprise me if the only reason bozo wants to attack syria, is to drive the price of oil and gas up...it's happened before, and often...big oil wants gas to be at 5 dollars a gallon, and really cripple America....China just bought Smithfield, the largest pork processing company...looks like the price of bacon and sausage is on the way up...as well as truckin and transportation!

Had our garage sale a weekend ago...what a disaster! Hardly sold anything at all. Called Disabled Veterans and they picked up a bunch, gonna call GoodWill to take all the furniture...anyone need a Baldwin upright piano? 1954 Seeburg 100 jukebox??? Got em priced just right...Beaus junque yard, really will save you money...of course you will need to arrange for shipping...

Ok, smoke alarm going off again, suppers ready! ! ! Wonder what ol Hop Sing and Wishbone have prepared for us this fine eenin!  blackened spam, refried refried and refried beanie weinies! Oh why not!

Hey jackie, sure be glad to see you at fudges...Hey Jimmie Lee, how you and Charles getting along? Charles get any relief from all the treatments? Sure hope so...been thinking about yall...

Beau Wann, Jr.

It's me again Margaret! ! ! Good ol Attilla the Homeless! ! ! Two of our 600 cats are driving us crazy! they are both 18 years old, Katie just a few months older than Peaches. Katie is a "Blue Tuxedo" and Peaches is an "Exotic Shorthair" (she still looks like a kitten in the face) Cool huh!  Anyway, they both have gotten so VOCAL about wanting something, be it food or whatever! They howl louder and longer than a hound dog on a coons trail. Katie has "hyper-thyroid" problem, and is on medication, and also high blood pressure pills, and Peaches is on high blood pressure meds!

NOW I AX YOU, HOW DOES A CAT DEVELOP HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? What stresses a cat out? Especially when they live in the proverbial and literal lap of luxury! ! ! Open kitchen 24 hours a day- a thousand and one safe and snug places to sleep...all the catnip they want, plus kitty greens grown on premises...etc...

Oh well, could be elephants with problems, eh! Rode Pegasus today...only rode for 45 minutes! I hate to say it, but riding now hurts my back...booooooo! Man, that was my onliest theraputic outlet...now what the heck am I gonna do for stress related stress?

Need it now more than ever! Closed on the new house construction loan...lordy what a convaluted conglomerate of gobble de gook...they had to slay a thousand trees for all the paper work we signed. The stack was a foot thick. Now we just have to close on the sale of our house, if that ever happens!

Got a buyer, but so far no closing date. Had an inspector out to examine the place...what a mess...he's paid to find things wrong, and he found plenty...of an inconsequential minor nature..."a screw loose on a door knob" ...blah blah blah...what a crock!   "Saw a spider in the house"... oh no, not a spider! We even got geckos in the house sometimes. Of course they enter at their own peril, cause our cats dont allow visitors of a geckos persuasion!!

Ok, I'm gonna get off of the forum, cause when I'm on it, no one else gets on, and when I'm absent, lots of folks get on!  I guess yall are intimidated by my "writing credentials", with all the pulitzer prizes I have won...golden globes and tonys and academy awards for best screen play...The Ohio Buckeye award...yada yada yada...Really, I'm a regular guy just like yall, well, not like the girls, but still regular if I were one! And if there's anything I like best, and that's being regular, by golly!

I put my pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else...oops, thats not quite true...I actually put all both legs in at the same time...I have to sit down to put em on now days. Cant jump up and put em on on the run like I use to as a youngster...I'm still pretty much wash and wear, but a tad slower!

Oh, you willll be proud of me, I found a way to put on my socks without help, mostly.  Isnt it ironic, we get to go back to when we were youngsters. I dont have trouble tying my shoes, cause I dont wear shoes, I wear boots...or bare feeted...dont generally go outside without some foot protection, cause there is always a stone out there with my feets name on it, then I get to limp! ! !

Been signing up for rent houses on line, sending emails, but no one responds to our inquiries...whats the point of having email if you dont respond? Even called the phone numbers, no answer! ! ! What gives? Do they know it's me? Heck far, sometimes I dont even know it's me!

Tried looking for a travel trailer to put on the new/old homestead to be, but no luck there. What the heck good is the internet, if you cant find what you want? Bout the onliest rental property in the Chappell hill/Brenham area are apartments, and I dont even want to go there. It's sure gettin scary being homeless, especially with 6 cats and two dogs...oh  yeah, and a wife....and two cooks...and a partridge in a pear tree...la la la! ! !

They have a double header Monday Night Football games on tonight! Texians dont start till 9:30, which has long since passed. You notice I CAN TELL TIME!  Well, goes with the territory of being a great writer! Or is that a write greater? Oh pooh...

You know what we havent had in a long time? No, not rain, but we havent had that in a very long time, but a WABEC meeting! Maybe we can have it at Fudds tomorrow night! Yeah, thats the ticket, we will hold our very first WABEC meeting of this year at Fudds. Lots of things to discuss, lots of whirld affairs to solve, and burgers to evaluate! I'm gonna get the chicken fried burger and some O rings...yeah,thats the ticket...dang now I've gone and made mahself hongry...Wishbone and Hop Sing are both asleep. Guess I'll have to do a little "hunting and gathering" and forage for myself some vittles!

This was gonna be just a short note, and you can see I have strayed from my O riginal intent...as I have allus said, a mind is a terrible think...
      Ok, see ya tamarraw night..
Keep the sun at your xis and ride boldly ride, but safely...
Your frien and special brother-in-classmate, Attilla the hun gry and home less...

Susan Howard (Bowman)

Okay, Beau!  Just a word from a former realtor.  All of the little stuff the inspector found is inconsequential!  The only things you need to worry about are things that are not cosmetic, things that might be a danger or interfere with the function of living in the house:  ie, mold, or electrical outlets that shock, leaky or broken window seals, etc.  Your realtor can advise you on all of this.  When we sold our house in Indianapolis the inspector came up with a list of things, one of which was a window in the master bedroom that wouldn't stay up when opened.  That was the one thing on the list that we said we wouldn't fix because it was the result of the house settling and the buyer accepted that.  Fortunately our house wasn't too old, and we had kept up with most repairs.  One thing we had to do was have our duct work and the coils on our heat pump cleaned because there was mold (which we were unaware of) and we had a cat and the buyer was extremely allergic to cats. What should have been about a $200 fix ended up costing us $1000, but it was a deal breaker if we didn't do it.  You can also offer the buyer a set amount to take care of things that need to be taken care of if you don't want to fix them.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Susan, thanks for the advice! I know the house is almost 50 years old, but We have a home owners warranty, that covers everything, paid up and transferrable,  plus a service policy with Jordans air, paid up and transferrable, Termite policy, paid up and transferrable, Flood insurance paid up for a year and transferrable,(and we are not in a flood plain, nor have we ever flooded)  a roof policy paid up and transferrable...foundation is one tenth of an inch out of level, so foundation is great! Plus, all the above has been inspected and given a clean bill of health. Air and furnace is only 7 years old, and Ha at Jordans says an air conditioner should last 20 years, and Ha walks on water as far as I am concerned.

New hardy plank siding top to bottom, stem to stern, new paint outside, and inside, new floors up and down, less than a year old, all metal exterior doors, storm doors on all exterior doors, storm windows on all windows, new shutters etc...the one thing they were concerned with is the roof, it is a 30 year roof, with 20 years on it. Had a roofer come out, and he will guarantee it for 5 years. I told em I am not gonna have a new roof put on!! They were concerned about the elect panel, inspector said he saw a loose wire...I told them what it was, but had to have an electrician come out and spell it out for them, and check out the panel and say it is ok.... We have even thrown in the fridge and washer and dryer, with an option for them to buy many more and other things too.

I think we have been more than fair for the price we're asking and that they offered. I know this is a big purchase for them, and they want the most for their money, and dont blame them, and they are paying CASH, which is good for us. I guess I'm just anxious to move forward...git er done! Turn the page to the next chapter, tally ho...homelessness! ! !

I hope I am just kidding about that, but it sure is loomin large on the horizon!  Maybe I'm jus bein a nervous nelly...

Hey Jackie!  Wish I could be there!  Have a little wine for me!  I will see you at the end of October!  I don't get to Houston as often as I did now that my mom lives in Temple, but I hope to be able to get back on a monthly schedule.  After all, my grandson lives there! Take care!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Wee small hour of the morning...cant sleep...what else is gnu!  Brain wont shut down, and I even took a melatonin! Too many things to do, and cant do them for waiting on this or that.

Fall is right around the corner, the signs are there! Been hearing a crow for a couple of weeks. You know, the lone "caw" on a quiet morning. Sounds from a cut cornfield...well, we have no cornfields around here, but the sound is still the same, corn or no corn, and thats no corn!

Hummingbirds are out in full force, suppin on the sweet nectar of lantana just outside the kitchen window! Have not seen any ruby throated ones, but green back and dark colored ones. They sure are an amazing creature arent they! The redtailed hawks have been circling overhead, looking for a meal of opportunity. They dont really have a season, they pretty much just hang around all year long. The monarch butterfly has also been hanging around the lantana on their migration to the mountains of mexico.

Remember that particular cover of National Geographic, with the lady standing in among the thousands of butterflys? I believe that was around 1972 thereabouts, when they first found the wintering grounds of the monarch butterfly! I always thought that was odd that they didnt know before that time, but I believe the article said that scientists didnt know the monarch migrated anywhere!

Saw some mexican whistling ducks down at cole creek yestidy morn. Me and Cooper out on patrol, spied 5 of the krazy kritters floating in the water. I guess ol Coop was feelin sporty, cause he gave em one of his window rattlin barks, and about a dozen or more rose up from the water and the tall grass on the sides of the creek, and commenced to headin for a quieter spot, sans me and Cooper! Ol Cooper sure looked pleased with himself, started prancin, and let em have another bark for good measure! That ol boy doesnt usually hand out barks that close together. He usually will bark once a day if the mood strikes him! What ever mood that might be! Or if one of the other kritters is on his bed! That always solicits a bark!

Thought I smelled wood smoke wafting down from the high country the other day. Thats a good sign of an approaching winter. That and the crows! An old indian told me once to "watch the birds", they will tell you what is going on! So far, I havent been spoke at by any birds, and other than sitting in the trees and flying around, I dont really know what to look for! I guess if a woodpecker is sittin on top of my punkin head, something might be up! Besides my dander!

I always look forward to the first cold front! One time we got our first one in September, but mostly in October and November. I reckon, due to the warmer and dryer than normal spring and summer, winter will be a long time coming...sadly! Things just arent like they should be, or like I remember as a lad! Sounds and smells and the changing seasons sure were important in my life! Dont really know why, just one of those things I suppose!

Havent seen much else in the way of wildlife, at least around Oak Forest. Not as many turtles down at cole creek, since they "improved" it! I imagine they killed a lot of em with their "beautification" program, when they dumped a zillion tons of boulders and rocks along the edges! The squirrels sure are looking skinny this year. With the size of the acorn crop the last couple of years, I figured the squirrels were gonna have to start going to Jenny Craig...hmmm maybe they did, and the news media missed it! Well, the squirrels are hungry this year, cause they are taking the pecans that are still in the green outer shell off the trees. Not even waiting for them to fall! Plus they seem to be playing alot, running around and up and down the trees chasing one an other.

Diane and I both, saw an albino, or blond squirrel. If it was just me that saw it, you might have cause to pause, but since Diane saw the same thing, you can take that to the bank. Never seen a blond squirrel before in all my borned days, unless you count Cooper, he is blond, and for the most part,  does act squirrely!

Speaking of pecans, I think I am going to start eating pecan pie next time one is offered up for dessert! I havent had a piece of Pecan pie since 1990, the onset of my diverticulitis. Pecans are soft, for seeds, or nuts, unlike peanuts and cashews and hazel nuts and filabert and brazil nuts...oh man, I sure liked going to parties back in my nut eatin days, specially around thanksgiving and Christmas, cause folks always put out a bowl or two of the delectable delights!

Maybe I can get ol Wishbone to make us a pecan pie one of these days. Found a recipe for "chocolate meringue" pie in my Cowboy magazine. I have a recipe from my grandmother, so I'm gonna compare the two. I actually made an apple pie once, somewhere round 1990, give or take a year or two. It was under the tutelege of my mom and aunt Elenore and Diane. Yup, made that puppy from scratch, and all by myself...they just looked on and nudged me this way or that sos to keep me and the pie out of trouble. Worked to!!!!! I remember that day, I cooked a pot roast and some fresh green beans and corn and tomatos right out of the garden. Well, the roast didnt come out of the garden, just the fridge!

My aunt cooked us up a mess of fried green tomatos that were so good, they disappeared off the plate before she could set it on the table! Havent had any since then. I just dream about them from time to time. We dont fry anything but bacon and eggs! Sure would love to have some fried green tomatos again...

Here's an axiom, or truth...always unfold your blanket BEFORE you lay down! Otherwise, you spend half the night wrestling with it trying to get it unfolded and your legs untangled from it! I generally dont sleep in the bed at night, so as not to disturb my beloved with all my tossin and turnin and jimmy legs, so I sleep on the couch, or try to sleep. Bout the time Dianes alarm goes off, I go to sleep, or want to!

I really needed to get to sleep tonight, cause I'm taking my son Kevin to the airport this morning. He is going to Alaska for a hunting and fishing trip...a trip of a lifetime! I've always liked Alaska, and Montana, but never felt content with going to either. I just wanted to be happy here! Besides, got too much responsibility here that I cant shuck to go traipsin off in to the wild blue yonder! Thats one of the things I miss about my youte, being able to pick up and go places! Well, I miss other things from my youte, like my hair and teeth, and not hurting so much, and a nickel coke and candy bar, and the Saturday matinees, 10 cent bus rides, Sears candy and popcorn counter, and the heavenly smells of Woolworths, and the wood floors of the old stores!

Looks like we not only lost Foleys, but the old building down on main street as well. It is scheduled to be torn down in the coming months, as Macy's has moved out of it as well. Nothing is left from our childhood, but memories! I guess thats with all generations I suppose. I just sorta thought ours would be different. There was no better store than Foley's, especially at Christmas! No better place to eat lunch than Woolworths lunch counter, or Walgreens! I would love to have one more lunch at the L.C. Cafeteria.  Ok, guess I better sing off for now, it wont let me paragraph, or line feed. So, keep the sun at your 6 and ride boldly ride.  your frien and special brother-in-classmate...Attilla the hun gry

Teddie Jordan

Beau, most of the behaviors of wildlife, including good ol' homo sapien, are explained by the basic needs of eating, mating and migrating. The hawks and harriers start moving down from the northern climes in the fall and we end up with a big concentration that winter here. They feast on our abundant squirrels, other rodents, rabbits, birds and other small animals. Just this week I saw a hawk intercept a dove in mid air near our back yard bird feeder and in an instant there was a big puff of downy feathers and the dove was gone. One of the most interesting sights to me is a little later when the buzzards and vultures migrate. You'll see big bunches of 30-40 buzzards circling high but always moving south. Can you imagine traveling a thousand miles by doing circles? Kind of reminds you of our politicians in Washington.

And about ten years ago I was lucky enough to look up from my work and see the once in a lifetime sight of thousands, probably millions , of monarch butterflies in a line as far as my eyes could see in either direction, riding the leading egde of a cold front in early November as they moved through the south Texas area on their way to their winter haven in the protected canyons of Mexico.

Other species such as the hummingbirds we're seeing now, the Teal which I will be tasting this time next week, the earliest migrating of the waterfowl, and even ol' WTL, will soon be winging their way down. Like you I can't wait for our first real cool front, which I define as at least a couple of mornings with lows in the forties.

Yep, I’ll strap on my SWA wings to head South with the other bird brains on Monday, the 15th (getting too cold here), then fish Port o’Conner with my son later next week – can’t wait to smell the salt air even if it’s still 80% humidity. I’m about to fish in my pants!

Then in about a week, Lora and I are headed to Tahiti (she has endured me for 25 years and says she deserves a great vacation) – we sail from Raiatea to Bora Bora for about a week on a 40’ monohull sailboat (with captain this time) – maybe catch a mahi or wahoo in 2000+’ of blue water – then stay about a week on a tiny motu (spit of sand/atoll off a bigger island) around Maupiti - snorkel with the mantas – dig my toes on the sand – read a book or two - try to catch bone fish etc. then Moorea to purge and then long flight back to the real world.

Sure glad to hear from David Blankenship even if he is dizzy and lives on Utah.  Speaking of Utah, I spoke Kupec today and he is somewhere in Utah headed to Mohab to ride with friend from California next week.

Any country/Jimmy Buffet fans out there check out License to Chill (with Nashville hat acts like Kenny Chesney, Clint Black, Toby Keith, Martina Mc Bride, Leon Russel, George Strait) which I am currently listening to………..good stuff for the ears.

Speaking of ears, we have had the best sweet corn and tomatoes for the past 4 weeks and I’ve been eating them every day – almost gone vegan they are so good.

From you know where but not for long,
