John Burgess Webb

the soft tail is a classic;i noticed that pegasus has spoke wheels,i dont know if you tune them but if not you need to get a spoke wrench and sound each spoke, some will thud and some will ping;tighten the loose spokes at the rim until all spokes ping at the same note, high and tight, makes the wheel more ballanced and absorbs lateral stresses.the kit cobra sounds like the cats'meow, bump that little 260 with a lunatti '3/4'cam and you will have "that"sound without shaking your teeth loose;smooth.id put a gt40 429 clone in it for passing purposes;whats 6 mpg? i just like the feel of acceleration;its a 'freudian thing'.i like nice machines;i speant many hours laying on the floor at my grandmothers home and watching her sew clothes for us on her singer sewing machine;i was fascinated by the way she could make that machine really work without effort.she made some fine shirts;my other grandmother made corderoy shirts for me and phil every winter.one year she made me a shirt from cloth left over through a couple of years and it was neat;brown, green, orange, red, eggshell and blue.it wasnt a "harlaquin"shirt,at least i didnt think so,more like "a coat of many colors".my mother would go at a dress pattern like a math professor;i guess i learned a little about geometry before i went to kindergarten.clothes patterns were complicated;the task of laying out the shapes and cutting the material went to mother and the sewing was done by my grandmother.i think having my long-term memory is a blessing;my body is a toxic waste dump with the equvalant of a rag wrapped around my plumbing like the steam pipe on the "african queen".i hope you dont mind that i share the last little vantage;in that  the memories of the early days seem to have clarity and the bad days seem too terrible to remember;the sheer terror and violence of war hauled me down and kept me down for 45 years.i thank god(whatever name one may use)for this forum and being in touch with friends and remember those times that were pleasant.there were hard times and there will be more hard times but we have had a good foundation in our first years, those days yielded to 'test days' and we enjoyed a wholesome competition that i enjoyed even though i was legally blind.after kennedy,i felt free to defend what i felt was mine;in that spirit,i enjoined the violence.for this i have paid in a like currency,to my own detrement.anger and destruction, not knowing who the enemy was, just like in that tropical paradise of vietnam.

then, the diologue on renoir shook my memory about the relative value of currency.here was vincent van gough;a starving artist, who was a peculular tzoid who never sold a painting and kept them all in his studio,a centry later one of his paintings that would have been worth a few dollars then, sold to a japanese cartel for 7 million at christies.go figure.it boils down to whatever some individual is willing to sacrifice for something he or she really desires, for love or money.value is hard to structure and we fight about it all the time.if "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" then a universe of pleasure is opened and there seems to be no natural law against it.poke out my eyes and i would still have, would still 'see' the world in my mind;ideas are born in the mind but we fight about them all the time.what is value in a polorized world? we have to deal with it.

p.s. there was vincent van gough lV ,who believed in truth and freedom but was murdered for documentery work on islam.under sharia law he was guilty of "denegrating islam";a death sentence in the form of a fatwah(holy writ) was executed in broad daylight on a street in amsterdam.it imports a 'chilling effect'on the freedom of speach.it works the same in panama or colombia or any place where corruption and intimidation are the means and the tools.

Hey John, I tune em till I can play Wagners "Ride of the Valkyries" and "Upon the Gods Entering Valhalla"...two of my all time favorites for sure!!!

Use to watch my mom sew stuff...she made whole outfits for me, pre K of course. Made an overcoat for me once. I sure did like it!!! My mom and my sisters could sew very well. Mom had an old singer that had a treadle on it you worked with your foot! The whole outfit was black...she use to turn the wheel on the right of the machine, by hand, back and forth, to and fro...turned out some mighty fine threads for us in her hey day...hey...Truth be known, I would have liked to learn how to sew, just to make the clothes that I like, that I cannot find in my size, or it is in my size, but for a shorter person or taller person etc...yalllll know what I mean...

Boot making woulda been a good thing to get into...but I of little patience, and skill...I use to lay on the floor or in a chair next to the sewing machine, and go to sleep to the sound of the hum of the motor and squeak of the rocking chair...good ol days for sure...

Rode Pegasus around all day...got tired and had to come home...not as young as I ought to be...went to several jeep dealers and CarMax to check out the new jeeps! If you dont want to be bothered by sales people, ride a harley to a dealership...they leave you alone for sure...Plus if they do hang around, they dont ask about a trade in!!!! I wouldnt trade my bike for all the cars on earth...I like it just the way it is...

Anyone thinking about going to the Lone Star Rally in Galveston Nov 4th weekend???? I probably will...people watching paradise! No one to ride with, both sons sold their bikes, and most friends have gotten rid of theirs...Maybe DW and I will go. She drives the car down there and parks on the seawall, and then gets on the back of my bike and we ride up and down the seawall and then to the strand. Beautiful place Galveston...Surprised it's still around after all the pounding it has taken since 1900...

Hey lunch bunch, sorry I missed out on lunch and the comraderie and good conversation, and a chance to solve the whirlds ills...but duty called...Dang rogue cow of Ms Olearys anyhow...tore down a 20 ft section of fence and turned over one of the feeders, and I just filled it up with about 450 pounds of corn...I started to shoot her, not Ms Oleary, the danged tootin cow...Heck far, that cow is now corn fed and prime beef... Had a heck of a time gettin her back to the reservation!!!!

I have a 12 ft bullwhip, of which I am proficient with, well, not as good as Lash LaRue, but good enough...when all else failed to motivate her, I popped her in the behind with it, and that got her moving! I hated to have to do that, but she was trespassing, and I feel I am going to need some couseling because of it, maybe reparations, for pain and suffering...she did run me around my pickup truck a couple of times, not Ms Oleary, bossy the cow...She is a big cow too, a Santa Gertrudis, and they standd about 6 ft or so at the shoulder...man, she is gonna be good eatin one of these days....

My poachin brotherin law, shot a cow during deer season one year, and he and another fool ground it all up in a meat grinder...didnt much like him, he was always poachin whatever he could kill, in season or not...not unusual for him to kill 20 or 30 deer a year...I was hoping he would get caught, but he died instead...

Hey John, you gonna be able to drag your toxic self down here next Tuesday???? Or anytime???? we all looking forward to seeing you...

Oh, me and Coop read with our kids last Monday...just makes my heart swell to be able to maybe  help these kids...I know we have a lot of teachers in our group, and I'm married to one, and I know teaching is very hard...and I only have 3 kids for about an hour once a week, but still it is nice to be able to help even in a small way...Their faces light up when they see Cooper on his blanket in the library...they give me a hug, and thenCooper a hug...Diane warned me about the hugging, which I dont mind, but these kids are starved for love and affection and just someone to act like they care...Ol Coop is the best thing for em, non judgemental, loves em whether they can read or not...Morgan has warmed up to cooper, and sat beside him and just stroked him till he almost went to sleep...Morgan has the most delicate face and beautiful dimples and curly blonde hair, what a doll...she just laughs and giggles at Cooper, and thats worth the price of admission right there.

Westin and Maria Elena stil are standoffish, they sit and face Cooper and read to him that way! They will get more at ease, I am told by the Librarian and my own Librarian, Diane, as time passes...I sure hope so! Wont get to read this next Monday, it is an in service day for the teachers and kids are off,,,Boo!!! I think the kids would rather read with cooper than take a day off...me too!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey...lunch compadres...had lunch today at the hole in the wall, Angies Diner, and it is surprisingly good...beef tips and gravy on mashed potatoes with fried okra and boiled cabbage, plus rolls and or a plethora of other delectable delights...you have to watch ordering beef tips...some places dont cook them right, and they are tough as an old boot...Not at Angies though, they were, "melt in your mouth tender"...rolls so soft, like eating a cloud, and REAL BUTTER...of course all the bad fat and calories had been removed by the chef...

Saw my grandson play JV football out at Cinco Ranch stadium. They beat Memorial 28-0...Memorial is not the school it use to be. Not many kids on the JV team. In fact when defence or offense was on the field, not many kids left on the sidelines...I think Most of em played both ways...which when I was a lad, I thought was common practice, except for the quarterback...
Hey, youse youtes that played football at Waltrip, did any of youse play both sides???? Was it allowed????  I only remember one game that I went to, and it was the Sadie Hawkins game that Lanice Richardson ask me to our senior year...I think we were playing Sam Houston, and we won...maybe...will have to consult our yearbook...

I'm thinking, at this juncture of the day, a good old fashion nap is in order...everytthing is starting to look blurry, even with my glasses on...hmmmm not good!!!! Oh, talked to a lady at sears parts and service, and she said she had lasik surgery to correct the same problem I have, Nearsighted in one eye, and farsighted in the other...she said it worked swell....any of youse youtes have that surgery done????? If so, does it last for long time?????? getting tired of wearing my glasses, and tired of hunting them down so I CAN WEAR THEM....

I be back later...I know, thanks for the warning, eh hoser.....

your friend and brother, his dukeness, Beau C Ephus

Afternoon to all you fine Waltripians. This weather we're having is definitely a 10 isn't it? I'm looking forward to going to the UH games Saturday evening. It will be a grand night for football. For all you folks who haven't been out there the Coogs play in Robertson Stadium on campus (formerly Jeppesen Stadium for HISD in our day). It will be torn down soon so they can build a totally new stadium on the same sight. fund raising and planning are underway. For the new football stadium and major renovation to Hofienz Pavilion projected cost is $130,000,000. So that probably means they better raise about $175M. They have some architectural renderings on their athletic website, www.uhcougars.com. I hope you can read about UH thrashing Miss. St. on Sunday morning. I think this will be their 3rd sellout of the season. they only had 800 tickets left on Monday.

Cephus, in answer to your question, there were quite a few people on our football team who played both ways. Even Glenn Smith the quarterback. If I'm not mistaken he played defensive back. As I remember it back then at least at the HS level it was more common for guys to play both ways.

Have a busy weekend going. Tonight I'm going to hear Omara Portomundo in concert at Jones Hall. She has been the vocalist with the Buena Vista Social club for years. This concert is celebrating her 80th birthday. Lots of great music with a Latin beat. Great stuff!

I hope you all have super weekends!

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

When a ball is hit in the air, in the infield, the "infield fly out" rule is invoked...I know why...so the fielder doesnt purposely drop the ball, doubling up the runners...now here is my quextion...

If an infield fly is an automatic out, WHY BOTHER TO CATCH IT???? Is there some rule that says a fielder MUST catch the ball???? What if he should let it just hit the ground and not touch it??? Then what???? is the ball live...can runners advance...is the batter out???? If the ball just lays on the ground, and there is a man on third, can the runner advance home safely if not thrown out at home???? What if the runner has a big lead off, and the ball just drops on the ground, can the runner advance home, or does he have to tag up????

Here's another...if a ball hits the top of the fence, and bounces over out of the field of play, is it a ground rule double, or a home run???? If the ball hits the top of the fence, but below the yellow home run line, and then the fielder catches it before it hits the ground, is it an out, or a ground rule double??? Is the fence part of the field, and therefore anyball touching it is like it touched the ground????

what if the ball bounces on the ground and heads over the fence, and actually passes the top of the fence, but the fielder managed to jump to the top of the fence and catch the ball, out of the field of play, is it still a ground rule double, or is it just in play????

These and other quextions are just running rampant through the fertile fields of my mind...and as I have stated before, a mind is a terrible think...

yo beau, tune spokes-velly velly important.the norton 750,honda 750 and harley sportster i had all had spoked wheels;my super-glide sport had aluminum wheels and it performed well.because i like to go fast,i prefer the solid wheels;spokes look better but you have to keep them tight.

i may not make it this month, had a bad spell this week and its hard to pace myself with pain.got meds but have to watch it close.the back surgery is the one thats not healed yet and anyone with back pain knows how it will shut everything down.in november it will be a year since heart surgery;its healing up fine and its just a little sore in a few places where the bone was cut.ive come to terms with time,i dont push it;i have to gently persuade it because it is tougher than flesh and bone.its kinda like a drill instructor;it will keep going wheather you can keep up or not,to the last breath.

John B., we be praying and thinking positive thoughts for your healing...another reason not to like spoke wheels, is that they need an inner tube...had a flat on Pegasus a year or so ago, on 290 out about Waller, at 70 miles an hour...fortunately it was the rear tire and not the front...
Cant fix  a tire with fix a flat or plugging it, if it has an inner tube. Had to call a tow truck...boo...and buy a new tire.  That shot an entire day, and all I wanted to do was ride...

That 750 Norton a one lunger???? The Norton, I have heard from reliable sources, was the fastest bike in the whirld...I dont care, cause I dont want to go fast...smallest mistake can be fatal...well, what the hell, you cant live forever, right!!!!

good saturday to all...your dukeness Olbeauwannkanobie

Good Sunday morn to youse youts...

John, I feel your pain...no really, I feel my pain...had to take a couple of the little white pills. I resist taking them untill absolutely unavoidable. They work...make me sleepy too, but unlike most folks, I cannot go to sleep when I take them! Catahoula Jack and I have been out sitting in the swing, looking at the stars, talking to God! I did fall asleep in the swing, but I fall asleep in the swing with or without the little white pills...something about a swing that is so soothing to me. Ol jack had his head in my lap, whilst I was visiting with God, and his angels, and ever now and again, Ol jack would raise his head and look at me with such great love...

I try to pick out the stars that I know, and realize I dont know any of them anymore. My view of the stars is distorted. Looks like they are all on fire...and they very well may be!!!!  Didnt do a whole lot today, at least nothing that I planned to do...just wasnt up to it! Yall feel that way sometimes??? Not productive at all...well, I did vacuum, and a few other minor drudgeries...went to Colinas for lunch, Had the Z pizza. It has everything on it except anchovies...Colinas is on the corner of 19th and Nicholson, across from the old Reagan State Bank! Dont know what bank it is now...Colinas is ok, waitstaff is surly at best, but food mostly good. cant understand why a business that relies on service, why it isnt friendly.

Bought a Stihl (steel) chainsaw Friday at ACE hardware on the corner of hwy 529 and barker cypress. Manager waited on me, and was both professional and personable. Very knowledgeable about the chainsaw and it's operation, as to be an expert, without being condesending. A valuable asset to "ACE for sure!!! Wish I'd bought a Stihl long ago, instead of buying the inferior brands, ie craftsman, poulan etc...This particular model is the MS260, and has an "easy start" pull on it. Barely pull on the rope, and it releases a spring, and starts the motor instantly. No more pulling and pulling until my arm falls off, plus it came with a case and extra chain and most importantly, a STIHL CAP...oh, and a carbide tipped chain. Fire depts have them to cut through shingles on roofs like they did during Katrina and Ike etc.

If you havent been to an ACE hardware in a while, most of them have an extension of the Post office inside. However, it is a million times better than visiting a post office. Friendly prompt service, something you dont get at a U.S. Post Office...

Why did I mention ACE and my new chainsaw???? beats heck out of me, just ramblin! Gonna be a long night, painless, but sleepless also. But what the heck, I'll just nap tomorrow during one of the boring games on TV!!!

Back to Colinas, they serve Focacia bread, which is the first place I have ever had it or heard of it. Good bread with olive oil...went to Costco,  they have their own bakery, and found fresh Focacia bread . Bought some, and wow, what a wonderful delight it is...It is better than Colinas, in my opinion. Also, if you are cooking with olive oil now, as we are, try GRAPE SEED OIL...it is lighter and really brings out the taste in what ever you cook in it, or in a salad. I think it is better than Olive oil, in my opinion...try it, I dont think you will be disappointed...you will probably love me forever for giving you all these tips...

Aggies lost...sorry sister doc...Rice lost...Houston lost...Baylor lost...Tech won, much to the delight of my beloved...she went to Tech, but graduated from UH. A very loyal fan she!!!!

I know everyone is enjoying this weather, and I am no exception...about the only drawback, is that I LOVE JACKETS AND COATS...heck, it isnt even cold yet, and I already have 4 jackets out and have worn all of them...well, not at the same time of course!!!! I just love jackets and coats and hats. I use to love sweaters, but it just isnt cold enough down here to warrant wearing one...at least for me anyhoo!!! In my much younger days, I liked turtle neck sweaters, but wouldnt wear one now on a bet. Just to chokey and hot around my neck now days!!!!

Been on many dawn and midnight patrols since last we visited. All's quiet on the western front...in the early morn, sitting along cole creek between the Bolivia street bridge and the trestle to the west of it, you can see the steam rise from the placid waters as the suns rays peek under the bridge! Tuesday, saw a redtail hawk pluck a pigeon right out of the sky in mid flight. It was so cool...well, not for the pigeon of course, but thats just nature, survival of the fastest!!!

Anyone read any good books lately???? Rich, how was that opera???? I love opera, well, some of it...Ive been trying to read "Cant Wait To Get To Heaven" by Fannie Flagg, author of "Fried Green Tomatos"!!! Been having a hard time getting into the characters and the whole book, for that matter! Just havent been in the mood for it! Sat down with Cooper and Oscar Mayer, and practiced our reading. Jack was very attentive...I wonder why!!!!! Seems he is also on first name basis with Ol Oscar M...Jack will lay next to cooper, and myownself, and follow every move we make, hoping to score...he does!!!

we had to put the wooly mammoth on a diet, much to his consternation...when we go to the kitchen, which is often, he just begs for food...not people food, he doesnt eat it, but cat treats and dry cat food! He wont eat canned food, or even real tuna, he just licks the juice off of it!
Olie Olie Olie, what we gonna do with you????

I am finally running down...hard to keep my eyes open...no kidding, its only 3:30 AM...guess I will sing off...been great chatting with youse...your turn to open up now...

an old indian once told me, "Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here, we might as well dance!" ...Rich has been trying to get us all to dance for a long time, so nows our chance...

Teddie Jordan

Hey Beau, to answer your question, Fran and I have both had lasik surgery. I, being a chicken, talked her into going first. Then about a year later, when I was finally convinced that she was not going to need a seeing eye dog, I went ahead and had it too. That was about 8 years ago and I can honestly say it's probably the best money I've ever spent in my life. Loving the outdoors as I do, glasses were always a major pain for me. After a long walk to the deer or duck blind or turkey hide before daylight, I would sit down and my glasses immediately fog up from the heat I had built up. So there I was, ready for action, except for the fact that I couldn't see. Or try fishing in a light drizzle. Why somebody hasn't come out with eyeglasses equipped with defrosters and wipers is beyond me.

Anyway, I would highly recommend it.

The surgery was pretty quick and easy, but I don't think I would have been any more nervous if I had been awaiting brain surgery. Knowing that I was going to be nervous I asked them if the routine was to give me any medicine to calm me before. They said, Oh yes, we will give you a Valium and we have big burly truck drivers that are asleep when we come to get them. Well, I'm not a big burly truck driver but it didn't faze me. I had heard about valium all of my life and what a big disappointment that was. A beer or a marg would have done me more good.

Anyway, do it.

As you know I'm looking into hearing aids right now and if I get one and you get your eyes cut we could be the bionic geriatric twins. We'd be paternal twins though because of our different hairdos. I know a couple more of our classmates who could join our bionic club too.

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Theo, thanks for the info...although I wish you hadnt said "get your eyes cut"...sometimes I need someone to hold my hand on things, especially on visits to the sawbones for surgery...although I had no problem with my gizardectomy, wasnt nervous at all! Only thing that bothered me was I wimped out and let them give me too much pain killer, and it put my kidleys to sleep, and as you know, you have to go, before you can go...But alls well that ends well!!!  Maybe I will look into it...get Diane to have it first, you know, ladies first!!!!!  You gonna go to costco???? I would sure give them a try on the hearing aid dept!
Cost 50 dollars to join, and well worth it...I like my HAs...

Although today, I wasnt very happy with them. Couldnt hear diddly squat for some reason...told my beloved something was wrong with my hearing aids!!! She turned to look at me, and I got the funniest look from her...then she stood on my size 11 feet with her size 4 feet, and grabbed the front of my shirt and pulled my face down to hers, and said, "guess what...you dont have them on"...OOPS...not only do I need gooder ears, I need gooder eyes, and now much more gooder memory...I really thought I had put them on...who ya gonna call, "Ghost Busters"!!!!!!!! Dont let Mrs Simpson see those last couple of sentences! I really know better, just cant resist messing up on purpose!!!

My oldest son and his wife came over this evening, to fix a belated birthday dinner for Diane!
We had fresh grilled yellow crook neck squash, and steamed broccoli, and brown rice, and fresh caught speckled trout! All was good, but too healthy for me...not enough grease! It was good, but the fish had too much garlic for my taste! Thats one thing I have noticed about my sons, they use very heavy garlic on just about everything! Being Italian, a little garlic goes a long way with me...What????? you heard me, I'm Italian...we dropped the "aroney" from Wannaroney...yeah we did...you believe that dont you????

Never did go to sleep last night, or this morn, havent even had a nap today...looks like tonight will be the same...no big thing, I will eventually get some sleep...give me a chance to enjoy the silence and catch up on some reading, and loving on a few of the critters that want to get in my lap...Jack and I will sit in the swing for awhile...we both love that!!!

Well ok then, YAWN, heck fire, who knows, might just get in a few winks tonight, that would be nice...
Your friend and Italian Brother, and personal duke, Olbeauwannaroneykanobie...

God morning Waltripians. Hope you had a good weekend. The UH game was dismal. They should feel embarrassed. I don't think practice this week will be much fun. The offense had some excuse since they're still trying to sort out their quarterback dilemma. I'm not sure what caused the defense to come unraveled but it wasn't pretty.

Cephus in answer to your unanswered baseball questions. The umpire calls the infield fly rule. Therefore the batter is out even if they drop the ball and the runners can't advance because time is out when a batter is out until the umpire signals "play ball". In answer to your questions if a ball hits the top of the fence and bounces out that is a home run. If a ball hits the wall below the yellow line it is the same as if it hit the ground. The ball is in play. If the fielder catches it coming off the wall it is not an out. If a ball hits the ground and bounces over the fence it is a ground rule double even if the fielder jumps up an catches it. All of these circumstances infield fly rule, home run and ground rule double are calls made by one of the umpires. Also each ballpark has it's own ground rules in addition to the general ground rules. That is brought about by the individual configuration of each ballpark. If you notice before each game starts the managers give their line ups to the plate umpire. At that time the three of them go over the ground rules of the ballpark they are playing in. This is my take on the situations you described. So if you or anyone else knows differently let me know. I need to have these things correct. it might mean I would win a bet someday

DOD the concert Friday was a lot fun. I really like the Cuban music. I sure hope I have as much get up and go at 80 as Omara Portuondo does. From what I read in the program she is touring all over the U.S. and Europe. Go Omara! Man did she have some good musicians with her! The guy playing the double bass was great. He played that big ole fiddle almost like it was a guitar. it was amplified so you could clearly hear what he was doing. They also had a guitarist, drummer and percussionist, all were super. Omara just recently won a Grammy for her album Gracias. That  music just makes you want to get up and dance!

I hope as many of you youtes as can will be at Fudd's tomorrow night. It's always a good get together.

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

Hi, all...

The Chinese that I work with have been looking at the Forum with me today. They have wonderful questions about "the way things were back then". Their average age is about 27 years. They think the girls are beautiful and the guys very very strong. They are impressed that some of you married your HS sweetheart and still love and keep them today! I like that about ya'll too.

I will see ya'll at Fudd's and truly looking forward to traveling your way...

Paige

Hey, missy Paige...soooo glad you got on the forum...who's that with you in the pic???  Hey Burge, dont know what it is about the night, been awake since midnight thirty...got real sleepy at 9, actually bored silly with the football game and other foolish folly, so I went to bed...managed to get about 3 hours of sleep, which for me aint all bad...Jack and all the cats were up...dont  know what was bothering them, unless it was me!   Jack wanted out, which is a rarity! He and Coop generally sleep all night, lucky for us...Jack and I sat in the swing out by the cement pond counting the stars, looking for that illusive shooting star...never did see one!

Washed and dried one load of clothes, and washed the dishes and all before dawn...Army's got nothing on me!!!!  It must be Claudett Colbert night on TCM, and sell any and everything on all the other channels! Lacy is in my lap, and has been my little shadow most of the night...Jack wiggled his way under the foot stool in the library, and just disappeared...that is until I got up, then the footstool started walking across the floor...critters are sure strange sometimes!!! And of course, us human beans arent, of course not...

Watched a program on the wolves in yellowstone park...a century ago, hunters, farmers and ranchers pretty much decimated the packs, then came the effort to save the ones that werent killed off, to now very healthy and numerous packs! Now the farmers and ranchers and hunters are complaining again that the wolves are killing livestock, and killing off herds of deer and elk etc...bills introduced in congress or trying to be, to start killing the wolf off again...the idjits in power, just dont seem to get it, you mess with mother nature, she gonna smack you hard...my neighbors up at ye old country estate, all have donkeys and mules and some have Great Pyrennes dogs to protect their livestock from predators such as, coyotes, bobcats etc...

I dont think that wolves come this far south, but I swear I saw what looked like a wolf up at ye old country estate...probably just a stray huskie or shepherd, still rather large and menacing looking for a dog...have seen lots of coyotes...one was trying to lure Cooper away so the pack could kill and eat him...had to tackle cooper as he started running towards the decoy coyote!!! Pulled my 357 out and of course wily coyote disappeard before I could get the range and bearing...

working on my fourth deck around the cement pond...instead of sinking four bys, I use the made for blocks to support the timbers...it is hard, to say the least, to level 3 ground touching points...I kept having to dig down at one end, then it was too low, so had to dig the middle out and the other end out, then that was too low, so dug the first end out and it was too low, till the blocks almost disappeared...heck, I could have just sunk posts instead...so I filled in the holes and started over again...Almost got er this time...had help from Jack and Cooper and big Oliver...

Good ol jack, peed on one of the concrete blocks for me...I guess to settle it in more...seemed to work too...Hey jack...Oliver is having a grand time, kicking up a lot of dust as he rolls in the dry dirt...I picked him up to take back into the house, and after I set him down, it looked as if I had rolled in the dirt...That big ol boy is such a delight! When he starts running around the pond, ol jack runs with him, and trys to turn him over with his snout...sometimes it works, and sometimes ol jacks snout gets perforated...then he looks at me, all hurt and sorrowful, and trying to dislodge a wooly mammoth from his snout...

well, ok, guess I will sing off for now...
today is tuesday and fuddtripians night...have to remember to put on my bionic ears...been forgetting them the last couple o days...

hey all....been reading your quips daily, been busy with the school thing.

Yes Beau, there are wolfes out here and you being farther north than me, should have quite a few.  Went to the St. Stanilaus Catholic Bazaar, wonderful BBQ and auction in their newly built hall.....The food line was about a football field long.  I hung out viewing the auction and wishing I could buy one of their homemade quilts - 500 - 1300. beautiful and for a good cause, bought a lb of their brisket to take home after the line went down.  This has always been a very sucessful community event and, if you want to see the old-timers, new timers, kids and families.  The ompapa band was fantastic.

This weekend is a new one "The Mexican Hill festival" in Richards, TX.  Haven't been but I hear there is a good turnout, food, drink, family activities, old cars, bikers, etc. and I  will probably go this year....Drifters is now open and gave away free food and beer last weekend.  Didn't go to that one, just passing on the news.

The best one as far as I can rate is the Madisonville Mushroom Festival on 10/23rd....I will be at that one, been waiting all year.  If you like gourmet "freshly whipped up" dishes made and demostrated before your very eyes, with a complimentary sample of wine of your choice by local winerys here and there in TX. as well as a $10.00 book of mushroom recipes available for purchase.  A lot happening here, my fave time of the year.  Oh. and by the way, Grimes County, the Land of Milk and Honey, has also gained the title of the "Heaviest people in the Brazos County....hee, hee, those ranchers are eating their own sausage and beef!

Good morning Waltripians, hope to see bunches of you at Fudd's tonight. I plan to be there but don't let that deter you. Burge hope we'll see you soon. With winter approaching a trip south should be appealing.

Kay, good to hear from you. Keep up the good work educatin' those young'uns. You need to get on down to Fudd's we haven't seen you in an age and you weren't at the reunion this year. You're missing some good times!

Beau, I think  TPWD is working on increasing the population of red wolves in Texas. That is the native species here. Last week I think you were asking about the Canadian you knew "eh, hoser". I consulted a friend who is a former Canadian. They usually put eh on the end of a statement that they want a positive response to such as "Nice day today, eh?" Hoser is a slang term for a guy. I presume I don't need to explain that. Are you selling tickets to watch you build the deck? I'm sure it will wind up in the cement pond someway. You haven't mentioned the wooly mammoth being in your lap lately. Is he pouting since he is on a diet? I'm glad you kept Coop away from those coyotes. Liz enjoyed meeting the big fella at Woof Fest. She is sure all those dogs and people were there to meet her. Took her for a walk last night. We don't make much progress when the neighbors are out. She is as enthusiastic about meeting people as she is about food. Which is very enthusiastic. Remember she is a full blooded Rushin Setter!

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

Fred Keller and Judy Foster of Wasilla, Alaska converted their 1976 Mazda pickup truck into a giant Radio Flyer wagon. It took 11 months to build. Keller says, "you kind of get the sensation of driving a sports car."

Very cool ride sisJ. I'll bet they could sell a lot of those if they put them in production. I could see Burge driving down from Almost Arkansas in one to go to a 2nd Tuesday gathering!

Sister Jackie, you always come through with the good stuff...thank you again for such a great gift as this website...that radio flyer brings back a few memories...use to have one as a wee lad, and bought my boys one when they were wee lads, and got our grand children one when they were wee lads and lasses...cant beat a radio flyer, well maybe with a corvette...or well tuned mustang...

Just back from 2nd tuesday at Fudds with good folks all...I always have such a great time, and no matter how bad I feel before hand, I feel so much better once I attend...what a great group of folks...happy birthday pretty pirate paige...29 again! But where else could I sport my new hearing aids and show em off...I just know I was the envy of my classmates! Even those that dont need hearing aids, are going to get some thanks to me...

Teddie and I were talking about finding a younger crowd to hang out with, a crowd more fitted to our age, 2nd childhood...nah, I think we stay where we are...dont think anyone could find a better group than us...

Worked some on my new deck, not much, just went out and kicked the supports on it, and check to see where my tape measure went...yup, you guessed it, in the pool, along with a pencil and a folding lufkin measuring rule...No other tools, just the odd tennis ball and doggie play toys...
Let the wooly mammoth, big Oliver out, and that fool cat  just jumped in the dirt and rolled and wiggled until he covered his entire immenceness with the dusty stuff...meanwhile, a mouse jumped out of the philodendron, and the wooly mammoth ignored it, but Catahoula Jack pounced on it and killed it and set it down in front of me...Lord-a-mighty, I got reversed critters...Freaky Friday on Tuesday...

Right now, the wooly mammoth is firmly ensconsed on my left foot, good think I still have my boots on, and they are steel toe, cause he is kneading his claws that I dont need, as we speak!
GET OFF OF ME YOU DERANGED WOOLY BULLY....oh, this ought to be good, Jack has put his head  in my lap, and Cooper has followed suit...It is sure good to be loved, aint it, even if it is just critters?????

I heard the blinker on my truck for the first time today, since I got it in 2007. You guys know what I'm talking about when your wife reminds you that your blinker is still blinking, because you dont hear it, or see the light blinking, yeah, you know what I'm talking about...
well, my wife wasnt with me today, to keep me out of trouble, and I signaled that I was getting up on the freeway, so up I went...then about a couple of minutes later, I hear this "clicking" noise!!!! I'm thinking, "what in the hell is that clicking"???? "Oh no, now whats wrong with my truck" says I to no one in particular, cept maybe the truck gods...It were my blinking blinker...Ha!!!

Well, I found the source, it was my blinker. Before today, I hadnt heard it, being deaf as a post...and, my beloved wasnt around to point out the fact that I was being an idjit...I have scolded other drivers for having their blinkers on for miles...now I know why...everybody is deaf, and blind!!!!!
I could even hear some of what people were talking about tonight, not all, but enough so that I wasnt just going "unh huh, ok, sure, yeah right"...and really not hear, or understand a thing that was said...I still sometimes ask for folks to repeat things, even though I hear them now, hard to break an old habit...

If any of youse youtes havent been to 2nd tuesday at freaky fudds, you really should come...one of our classmates was handing out 100 dollar bills to everyone...Nice folks...Pluse if you want to eat healthy, and like meat, they have Buffalo, and elk and wild hog and assortment of salads...we got the regular burger, and had em take out any bad stuff...works for me!!!!!
Dang, it was so good seeing everyone...thoroughly enjoy myself! Didnt get to talk to everyone, but dont think that is a problem for anyone...least not me anyhoo...I talk to em next time...

Gonna try to go to sleep tonight, at least thats the plan, got a full day at our county estate tomorrow...Gotta pick up my son in the morn, and go by ace hardware for a few items and then off to check the feeders and cameras and mow and cut up some fallen trees for firewood and clearing the fence line...get to try out my new chainsaw, yea....dont think I  will need my hearing aids...I hear all I want to hear in the country, besides a chainsaw doesnt need any help being noisy...I rode my motorcycle tonight to fudds, and had my HAs on and thats another thing that doesnt need amplification...Oh, and was playing Roy Orbison in the truck, and that ol boy can shatter glass on those high notes...dont need a HA listening to him...

WOW, just saw em bring up the first miner in chilie...two months underground...one down, er up, and 32 to go...hope all goes well without a hitch...the supervisor agreed to be the last one up, wants to get all his men up first....speaks well of the man...Probably not gonna get any of them to work in a mine again, ya think!!!!! Might not be so lucky next time, if you call 69 days underground, well it does beat the alternative...being dead!!!!!

Ok, guess I will sign off for now...it sure was good seeing you good folks at fudds tonight...

i was out walking with the great hunter dogs and watching the weather;a front is coming through and the air is full of dampness.the southern sky is clear to the east and jupiter is shining @5 magnitudes brighter than ambiant stars.a friend told me that you can see 3 moons of jupiter with good binoculars;after the rain expected tomorrow the sky should be clear and i can set up an old reflector telescope i bought from roger conoway a few years ago.i like the old style bezel ring with long flexable tangent screws and counter-weight.like me,a clumbsy dinosaur.its fun on clear nights with NO mosquitos.nothing like the horizon to horizon canopy of stars in the skys of new  mexico and colorado.even without a full moon the starlight was dazzaling.

beau my boy,and you too teddy, dont go hanging around with younger crowds;you would not understand a single word they say,(except"whatever!")you know what i mean, like from outer space.its not worth a whipping from your good wives, and shame on you anyway.

i thought that the dogfish was the uglyist fish in the world, but this guy REALLY dosnt want to be eaten;not by sea creature or man.tell me god dosnt have a sense of humor.

in 1930 this marmon v16 convertable coupe was a car for serious professionals. at $5,000.,it had an all aluminum overhead valve v16 with a displacement of 490 ci.only 400 v16s were made, another bench mark to exceed,in thought and craftmanship.

note the fence in the background;looks to be appomatix to roanoke va..this car is a 'gangster' machine

What a fine machine! Probably pick one up for a song and a dance...and a quarter mil or more...not very much, when you say it real fast!!! Front should be here right about now or roundabouts thereof...lungs and sinuses are acting a fool...gonna have to break out my inhaler...boo, that stuff makes me more hyper than a 10 year old girl on speed...or caffein and sugar...last time I saw my grandaughter, she and a friend were bouncing off the walls after cokes and candy etc...

third miner coming up...sure is going slow...better slow than never, eh!!!!

coffee smells like it is through perkin...nothing like the smell of coffee in the morn...or anytime!!!!
All you good folks that are sleeping at this time in the morn, alls well on the southern and northern front...one of these days, I am going to find something to put me to sleep for 8 solid hours...and no side affects!!!!

Clock striking 4...All the cats and Jack are up now, thanks to me...too early to feed them...but not to feed me...hmmmm, out of eggs, boo...how about some cream of wheat? Malt-o-meal? Whens the last time any of youse youtes had some cream of wheat??? we have it all the time! it sure warms a body up!

How about Ovaltine???? I have a chocolate Ovaltine malt once or twice a week, with honey and stuff...N-E-S-T-L-E-S...NESTLES MAKES THE VERY BEST...CHOOOOCLATE...REMEMBER THAT ONE...Paige was singing that last night at Fudds...it was her birthday, and she celibrated with a chocolate malt with whipcream and a cherry, and cookies...Nice to remember and enjoy such simple pleasures...

Ok, got to go...computer is fixing to shut down and restart for an upgrade or whatever its doing it for...

Be back later today, after a busy day at the country place...

Paige Talley (Meek)

I was asked last night who the lady in the picture to the left was ----------> She is my granddaughter, Meghan. This is from her 20th Birthday this year.

I had the best time last night at Fudd's. If you didn't make it this time, we won't give up on you! Come on 'round when you can.

Richard, Lynn and Beau have more adventure stories than I do and it is always fun to laugh with them. What fun too, to see James King (he and I were in 6th grade at Cooley together...Mrs. Wilson was truly a lady and a great teacher).  It is always fun and most interesting to hear the chatter of friends comfortably sharing their hearts.  Ladies giggling (Yes! I heard giggling) as reminiscent tales pass from chair to chair.

Fudd's prepares a really great chocolate milkshake and it taste even better when it's directly from my “List of Things I Like” brought to me by a dear friend during my birthday month!. Thank you kindly, Sir Richard.

Fall is trying hard to push its way into the Brazos Valley (is this really a valley?) The deck beckons and the morning's coffee aroma is tantalizing... but, alas, the hour has passed and the day must become full of itself.

Thank you, my friends, for a lovely evening.

Paige
