Beau,

That's "Miss Texas Ruby," if you please.  I was thinking Marge & Gower Champion originally were skaters, but guess they were just dancers.

I definitely remember the TV show with Miss Texas Ruby.  I wasn't even into country music back then, so assume that was one of the few TV channels that was on the air at a time we watched it.  I remember when TV started, they didn't always have shows on the air during the the whole day and when they did, you had very few choices to watch.

Remember Milk Drop Mo?

Susan Howard (Bowman)

I remember Milk Drop Mo!  Also Howdy Doody, Captain Kangaroo, and the Mickey Mouse Club.  It's amazing to me how Sesame Street is still on - Big Bird and all - used to watch that with my kids when they were little and now I watch it with my grandkids!  I loved Mr. Rogers, too!  Such a sweet, gentle soul!

Remember Fred and Ginger?  I think I was in love with Fred Astaire!  Then there was Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald - wow, how they could sing.

Suddenly I am feeling very old!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Howdy!!!

I allus wanted to dance like fred astaire or gene kelly, but...just not as light on my feet as they were! I started watching closely how they danced, and they are generally up in the air with both feet off the ground! Thats how they make it look so good and easy! Always wanted to tap dance, but...there again, you need talent...I took one dance lesson from Patsy Swayzie, and one from someone across from the Oak Forest park! Mike Collins and I went once! Dont know who it was that taught the class! Another reason I joined the Navy, all the sailors in the movies could really cut a rug!!!

(having to type with one hand. Storm coming through, and I have three cats in my lap, all sniping at each other, but none will get down, and Jack is huggin my left leg! Needless to say, they dont like storms.)

Milk Drop Mo...wasnt IT a milk jug, or a drop looking character??? I remember seeing it, but dont know exactly what IT did!!!  Sorry about that, MS TEXAS RUBY...werent they a Houston act??? If memory serves me correctly, and I dont know why it should start now, but Curly Fox, really had curly hair, or real wavy hair!!!

WOW, we're getting a nice rain here...oops, it stopped!

Did my duty Friday, municipal court Jury Duty...Yup...made it through another one! Had to be there at 10 am, and didnt get picked! They let us go about 2! Paid us 6 dollars American money, and cash too!!! Wow...didnt cost me to park either, used lot H on the corner of Houston Avenue and Memorial! So, lets say it cost me a whole gallon of gas, that puts me about 4.50 to the good! Dang, who says this economy is in the terlitt!!! Well, it did cost me 7 dollars to eat...Oh great, now I'm in the hole 3 dollarss!!!! Oh woe...!!!!

Walking along Houston AVe, there are a plethora of beautiful trees, and one pecan tree in particular, that must be 100 ft tall, and 100 years old, and loaded with pecans! It is beautiful! Any of youse youtes walked along the bayou walk???? I did, and it is really beautiful! They spared no expense of our tax dollars to make it so!!! Now, all one or two of the people that actually go down there, can see just how beautiful it really is! They have walking bridges over the bayou too! One at about the same place that the covered walkway we used to cross the bayou to go to the Sam Houston Collisium from the parking lot where the carnival rides were during the rodeo!!! Remember it??? That walkway, was enclosed, and had a moving conveyor belt that you could stand on and ride across!! Or have I gotten that mixed up with something else!!!

Any of youse youtes, students of C S Lewis???? I mean, outside of the Chronicles of Narnia???
Now here is, or was a man that used 100 percent of his brain, 100 percent of the time! I have read, or tried to read and understand, The Weight Of Glory, The Screwtape Letters; Mere Christianity: and A Grief Observed, along with some other of his writings! I know that a Grief Observed, was about the death of his wife Joy! And Mere Christianity is the reconciling of Christ and christianity! (Lewis was an atheist at one time) I get the general gist of what he is trying to get across, but it seems to me that he is overthinking things! It takes him a whole chapter to say what probably could be said in a paragraph! The last thing he gets to, is the actual point he is trying to get across, while bringing up a separate and supporting point in almost every sentence! I mention C S Lewis, because his is one of the books I took to Jury duty, The Weight Of Glory!!! And I was wondering if anyone out there had read and understood his writings! I have to read and reread his works!!! Having a black and white intellect, is really tough when someone trys to shade in some gray area!!!! I just dont see any gray at all!!! Something either is or it isnt, does or it doesnt, will or it wont, can or it cant...no in betweens. This is not a learned process, it is a genetic trait!

Really has nothing to do with anything, just wondered if anyone else read His works!!!

Went to the Ranch Saturday! Took half ton of corn up, along with other items of interest! Like two dogs just itchin to run through the meadows and woods! Of all the things I love to see, that make my heart burst, are these two dogs running around, along with the wildlife of course! They stayed right with us everystep of the way, only straying evernow and again! Diane rode the Golf Cart, and I walked, ax in hand, checking and filling the feeders! Both Cooper and Jack were just marvelous! They got a little tired, but neither one would ride in the cart! Filled up their wading pool back at camp, and they just played Uboat commander, snout and face under water, and hindend up and out, pushing themselves around the pool and splashed most of the water out! Had to refill it! Then they got out and rolled in the dirt...yea!!! Then took a nap!!!

took some colored tennis balls up to play fetch with them! Of course, cooper being the intellect that he is today, just looked at me and grinned when I told him to fetch!!! Nope, not gonna happen...he just grins and lets his tongue hang out, wants to shake hands and lay down! Now Jack on the other hand will fetch, but not necessarily bring it back to you! He will pick it up, and then toss it further with the flick of his head!!! Right before we left to come home, I told jack to "fetch the pink tennis ball", and he did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How did he know it was pink??? how did he know that ball was the one I wanted??????? There was a blue one a purple one and a green one and an orange one! That ol boy is very smart, smarter than I thought! If I am on the tractor, he knows which way I am gonna turn before I know which way! If I turn right, he is already on the left and vice versa...I'm gonna see if I cant get him a job!!!

Kay, you need a top hand at your place???? Ol Jack is rarin to go! He makes journeyman wages, but he will pretty much work for...steak and potatoes!!!!

Went to chruch at the little country church in the city, yesterday! Usual suspects, of 30 people in attendance! Communion sunday...when I serve communion, I am always in fear of dropping the wine/grapejuice tray! Hasnt happened in 28 years, maybe I'm safe, but still like to be on my guard!!! Had the usual complaint from the one or two people that dont like the bread we choose! Everyone has been told that if they want to bring the bread, please do so! Sometimes folks just like to complain I guess! We use the Hawaiian Sweet Bread, because it seems to work out the best! Sometimes someone will bake bread in their bread machine and we will use that! I love fresh baked homemade bread. Maybe we could add butter to the communion trays...nah, probably not a good idear!!! Can the butter be blessed???? Sure tastes like it to me!!!

We are having the front doors of the church painted red! A common practice in the early churches! I forgot why, but it meant something good! But some people at our church, just hate the idea! Only one or two!!! I told em it serves two purposes, one of which, it will make it harder for the thug brats from Black Jr High, to write ugly words on the doors! They used chalk last time on the front porch and columns! Luckily it washed off before any of the little ol ladies saw what was written!!!
When we were kids, the thought of desecrating something as sacred as a church, never entered my mind!!! It was just something you didnt do!!!! Now they break in and steal the computers and whatever they can! Had to put bars on the windows! Some wonderful souls stole the central air conditioners for one of the buildings! Now we have bars on the outside units! Sad state of affairs the whirld has come to!!!

Noticed some huge limbs down in the front of the church yard! Gonna get my 16 foot trailer and chain saw and cut em up and take em to the ranch for fire wood! Probably later on this week! Anyone need fire wood??? Might be a cold winter! Our fireplace has the gas logs! Only way to go!!! But up at the ranch, we have an outside fireplace!!!  Just ramblin along aint I!!!

On our daily patrols, me and the boys spied a new mommy wood duck with three tiny babies swimming  together! They are the cutest things!!! Mommy just swimming and quacking, and the babies glued to her pin feathers, swimming in a close V formation!!! Kind of late in the year for new babes, but I guess this weather we have is conducive to more wildlife than say... INDIANA...Susan!!! Yall hurry on down before the first snow fall, before you get snowed in!!!! When you do get snow, make a snow angel and a snowman for us and take pictures and put it on the forum! We like to see what a REAL SNOWFALL  looks like!!!

I have a good friend that lives in Florida, that is originally from Indianapolis! He hates the snow, but now is rethinking Florida, because he has been through a half dozen hurricanes! I was hoping he would relocate to Texas, but probably not!!!

ok, singing off for now...your friend and brother...Klem Kadiddlehopper...remember him, Red Skelton???

Susan Howard (Bowman)

Hey Beau!  Tell your friend he definitely needs to rethink Florida and move to Texas.  My mom and I are driving to Sun City in the hill country just north of Austin on Sept 24 to see what they have to offer.  It's a Dell Webb community and looks like a really great place!  We actually have a Dell Webb community here in Indianapolis which is beautiful!  I am coming to Houston to celebrate my mom's 94th birthday on Sept. 25.  I want to be there to celebrate every one of those events with her that I possibly can!

I have read some of T.S. Lewis's works, especially the Chronicles of Narnia - my favorite is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.  When I taught 5th grade my class read it and we used it as the basis for a literary study and related projects.  And you are right, he is a deep thinker - even in the Chronicles.

My cat doesn't like storms either.  He hides under the bed.  I'm glad you got some rain.  Send some our way, would you?

Well I sure do remember Milk Drop Mo. I watched it every week and was an actual card carrying member of the Milk Drop Mo Club. Wish I had saved that card.

I must have been a big milk fan, and actually I still am, because I also watched the Looney Auction on TV every Saturday morning. Remember that one? They had a deal with Carnation Milk Company and printed Looney Bucks on the little round cardboard cap that was used to seal the glass gallon and half gallon milk jugs. You collected the bucks and when you had a bunch you went on their TV program and bid in an auction for toys and bikes and cool stuff. I saved and saved and just when I had accumulated quite a few bucks, they went off the air. But I remember that Glenn Smith went on there one time and had enough to buy a bicycle, which took thousands. I asked him how he was able to get so many and he said he had his whole family and neighbors and friends saving them for him. The start no doubt of his entrepreneurial talent.

Great memories of a simpler time!

My first time to be close to a tornado path.  Sirens are going off and TV shows it going right through northern tip of McKinney about 1 mile from our house.  Schools are holding all the kids until tornado warning is over in about 10 minutes.  Had to call my kids to warn them and, of course, they didn't know anything about it - Duh!

Burge that Aston-Martin is a beauty. I've lusted after those cars for years. Anything that was good enough for james Bond is ok with me. Now all I need is the $$$'s to seal the deal.  I would also still like to have a Volvo P1800. Which is the car driven by The Saint, Simon Templar. Heck I wouldn't mind having a VW Karman-Ghia convertible to tool around in on the weekends. British racing green with a tan top would be just fine. Or maybe a MGB or Austin Healy?

On the subject of cars and movies, what did you think of the flick and the car Gran Torino? I thought it was a great movie. Sort of surprised that Clint Eastwood didn't get an Academy Award nomination for it. I thought that the subject car was a knock out too.

Beau I think Milk Drop Mo was a big ole drop of milk. I think he was on some kids show. I also think but I'm not sure that it was a local show. Does anyone remember was he reping Oak Farms or Schepps or what brand of milk? I liked Kitterick better than MDM anyway! What young male didn't? You should make a video of Coop and Jack playing submarine commander and bring to Fudds.

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

Jimmie Lee, I had the same thing happen when I was teaching school a few years ago.  A tornado passed within a mile of our school and it was right at dismissal time.  We had elementary kids in the "tornado" position in the hallway for about 2 hours after school.  At least they sit now with their heads between their knees and their arms protecting the back of the heads and necks.  Don't know that we would have made it if we had to be in the "crunch" position they way it used to be.  That tornado did a tremendous amount of damage nearby - even made national news.  Glad you're okay!

09/07/10 05:29 PM #3137

Jimmie Lee Smith (Brawner)

All the storms up here are result of the big storm that hit Mexico and South Texas last evening.  A tornado cloud was spotted on a lake close to Ft. Worth about an hour ago.  We lucked out and got just a whole bunch of rain and the storm moved on North and so far a couple of funnels were spotted in the rain clouds but no funnels touched down up here.

Seems like practice runs for storms in elementary we had to get down under our desks and cover our heads and at Black and Waltrip we had to go out in the halls.  Remember Hurrican Carla - 1963, I think - we were without electricity at home and school for about a week, but we still had to go to school?

Jimmie Lee and Susan, if you had continued to live in the Oak Forest area you could have actually experienced a tornado. One hit us in 1983. That's far enough back that Beau will remember it. It hit in the middle of the night. That was quite an experience. The Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Candlelight, Shepherd Park areas looked like war zones. We were without electricity for 7 days where my house in GO was. That was a really taxing weather year. We followed up the Spring tornado with Hurricane Alicia in August. No electricity for 11 days then. Try Houston in August with no electricity. That means not only no AC but no fans. If I'm not mistaken that was also the year we had 3 days below freezing at Christmas time. We had electricity but no water. All the pipes were frozen. Having a house in Garden Oaks with pier and beam construction was a blessing. When things thawed out the water was under the house not in the attic like most peoples. Thinking back I've lived through a lot of Mother Nature's wrath, just as many of you have. Starting with a week long ice storm in 1950. I really remember that one because my dad was a lineman with HL&P. I'm not sure how many hours he worked then. He wound up with phleobitis and got an electricians license after that. Then the freeze in '83, another bad on in '89, five hurricanes that remember. Tropical Storm Allison and the city wide flooding that went with it. I never say "oh it's only a tropical storm. No big deal" anymore. An earthquake in Acapulco (nice vacation) and a blizzard in Washington D.C. one year. Also several prolonged droughts and probably some things I've forgotten. To quote that famous philosopher from SNL, Roseanne Roseanneadana, "It's always something"!

For you car fanciers, there is a lady driving a VW Bus around OF that has been really nice restored or maintained. It has a great new flower power paint job from the late sixties. There were several of those VW buses in the family. One year going deer hunting with my uncle in his we were fighting a head wind going up I-45 as a norther was blowing in. I thought when we got to the hilly terrain around Madisonville and Centerville that some of us might have to get out and push on the uphill grades. That was a pretty cold weekend. Not sure how cold it got but the water in the insulated cooler froze about a half in. layer of ice. There was a lot of wood burned in the campfire that weekend.

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

Richard,

We were still living in Candlelight Plaza in '83 and the tornado went right through about 2 streets from us.  We had a huge tree fall across our cul-de-sac street and we couldn't get out until all the neighbors got big saws and cut it up so it could be moved out of the way.  When we could get out of our area, we were amazed at the damage to homes so close to us.

09/08/10 04:42 PM #3141

Richard Meek '65

Jimmie Lee that was pretty amazing wasn't it. I didn't really have any damage at my house on W. 30th. Just a bunch of debris to clean up. Not so at my parents house on Cheshire.  They had the top of a pine tree through their roof. No one was hurt so that's a good thing.

Douglas Romans

Hey gang,

Did y'all know that Curly Fox and Texas Ruby "purportedly" lived down our street on Wakefield near Ella??? I say "purportedly" because I'm not 100% certain of this but that had always been the neighborhood rumor in the 50's though I never saw them.

Rich, was the ice storm of '50 in January/February or later on in December of that year? I remember it vividly to this day---I thought there were ice cubes from our freezer all spread out in our yard---one of my earliest memories!!!!

I also was on the Waltrip track team for the 1st two years of high school and am glad to hear of its modernization--I remember the treacherous concrete curb. The surface of the track was always simply called "cinders" which did seem to be made of crushed up bricks (their advantage was there was never any mud to run through). What a joy it was to fall down on knees and elbows!!!!!!!!

DougR

09/08/10 05:06 PM #3143

Richard Meek '65

DougR. I think it was in Jan. or Feb. I'll have to check though. Yes those cinder tracks were great when someone tried to plow a furrow with their knees and nose. I kept a tooth brush in my training kit to scrub out the wounds when hydrogen peroxide didn't get it done. You could get some really nasty infections going if you didn't clean them out completely. It was always interesting. . get the tooth brush out and guys were up like a shot. . ."I'm good, I'm good, I better get warm for my next race". I don't blame them that hurt like the devil. Other than sympathy pain though I never felt a thing.

In 1983 I was "Out in the west Texas town of El Paso!" (Marty Robbins) graduating UTEP and beginning my first year of teaching.  Different storms out there - lots of dust and sand.

Steve Puckett '65

Per the ice storm of 1950 - that is my earliest memory that I can date. I was puzzled & facinated by the ice covering everything, especially the front door's welcome mat encased in ice.  We lived west of N. Shepherd, north of Washington (Cottage Grove area?) where Dad worked at the Hudson car dealership. We had a nearby ice house that had a mynah bird. I amused the patrons by holding long conversations with that bird! We soon moved to 1349 Chantilly (just east of Oak Forest) as soon as the house was ready. We moved in time to see them pour the north side of Chantilly.

Burge, are those two Arabian beauties yours?

Orgre of OF we haven't heard from you lately. Are you, Coop & CJ are still on Dawn patrol protecting the western approaches to Kingdom of Oak Forest?

Sir Theodore, did TS Hermine drop a lot of rain on El Vendedor? If it did, everything should really be growing.

09/09/10 07:34 PM #3150

Teddie Jordan

Ten four Rich, and thank you. We caught 2 4/10ths inches from Hermine, which was well timed and just added to the already fantastic rainfall year we've been experiencing. Helps my little wild friends recover from the 18 months of virtually no rain and large scale die offs that we experienced in 2008 and 2009. But then it is called the Wild Horse Desert and weather and rainfall always have and always will cycle. We thank the Good Lord for all of our blessings.

Changing subjects, Fran and I plan to drop by the cocktail party for the class of '65 tomorrow night for a little while to see some old friends and visit. Hope other '64ers can make it too. Forty five years ago it seemed like the members of that class were alot younger than us, but that difference seems insignificant at this point doesn't it?

Ted, I'll see you and Fran tonight at the reception. Looking forward to it. Age differences do disappear don't they?

Burge I do remember the Pin Oak Horse. I went probably three or four times. I remember people dressed up to go to that, coats, ties, etc.  Then sat there with sweat running down your back but that was life in Houston. It was a simpler time wasn't it.  I have seen the Lippanzaners a couple of times. They are really outstanding. Since a lot of what they do is contrary to a horses normal musculature I've wondered about their training methods. They are beautiful to look at. I'm not a regular atendee but have been to the polo matches over by I-10. That's really interesting. I wish I had the money to be a participant in that sport. I don't think I would but I'd just like to have the amount of money it takes.

Everyone have a super weekend and keep on dancing,
