hey paige,im glad there is someone watching how this bill is unfolding, although it has passed already, the writers have the advantage in that it is so strung out over time that those in congress who havent read it probably never will.its a fait acompli.heres to the poor souls in congress that are not lawyers;mabe the persons who actually drafted the bill should by law stand and read the bill to all under manditory stricture.you probably have an idea what 2000 pages looks like;all in legalese, articulated and parsed to be opaque and worrisome.i mean lawyers need love too,i bet that it took seveenteen laywers to draft the "health care"bill.can you imagine the energy?lawyers for doctors, insurance co.,drug co's,health and human services and thier entourage of experts;then throw in the unions and the g.a.o. lawyers and accountants.then there is always some blogabitch charactor with their 'special interest' concern.boy,i love washington.its a barrel of monkies.seventeen lawyers to write and seventeen staffers and interns to skim through it for for studdering, language quirks, punctuation and spelling;then after being advised on how to spell his/her name, the legislator signs the bill and it does to the 'bear pit'.sometimes you win, sometimes you get thrown from the pit."god love em".

and beau, you can go into your santuary and look at your first love; i imagine it would be hard to let go of a stratocaster.good luck.was it 1956 or 57 when the stratacaster was born? its as cool as it can be.what do you think, lloyd?

you guys are the musicians, but ive the heard the stracaster in many different hands and for one who loves music;my ears have heard as many different sounds come from that guitar.its an honorable piece of work.

Hey burge, you are correct...Just got through playing Honky Tonk on my old strat! Sounds just as good as ever! Of course, I have a new amp, one o them new fangled digical ones, got a digical screen and tells you whats who...But I also have the old tube amp that I have had for almost 50 years! Still sings...it's an AIRLINE...which means it was sold by none other than Monkey Wards!!! I dragged that strat with me halfway round the whirld! Played with some make shift bands from all the branches of service...uso...etc...that is when I could!!! Met a lot of good folks back in them days!

We've hardly gotten a drop of rain today, but skies are black, and I've been smelling rain for two days! Rode my winged iron horse yesterday for about 200 miles! Running some fuel additive, "rocket fuel" through it! Sweetheart just purrs...only uses super unleaded. I figure I was getting around 40 mpg...not bad jethro, not bad atall...Smelled the rain then, along with all the other road smells! Got behind a square bail hay truck in Brenham, and stayed there for a while, taking in the  Sweet smell of alfalfa...

Corn is getting high, almost elephant eye high...Stopped in a the new ROCKYS on 290 at Field Store road, outside looks whoop de doo, but inside is lame!!! Nothing to offer that a 7-11 doesnt have, ceptin maybe a lunch counter!

Looking dark and ominous out! Guess me and the boys will stay in this eenin!!!

Hey Theo, thanks for the Rolling thunder video! Kinda makes you want to go up and salute that marine and hug him!  I think, I will start thinking about going to the rolling thunder event next year! After I go to Montana...maybe. Something to look forward to, eh jethro!!! I think I will start calling Jack aka John Boy, Jethro from now on! I kinda like Jethro...dont you all! Jack likes it!

Ok, I dont think its gonna rain, so me and the boys will go out on dusk patrol...

I noticed the other day in the local rag that Fuddruckers had been in Chapter 11 since April.  They have now been acquired by Luby's.  I guess that means that the Pappas family will be putting their stamp on Fuddruckers.  I sure hope it works better than the direction they have taken Luby's.  I would guess that, as with all takeovers, they will be closing some of the Fuddruckers outlets.  Let's hope they leave the one on 290 alone.

Well DOD if you start calling CJ, Jethro, are you going to call him Jethro Beaudine (from the Beverly Hillbillies)? Seems like an appropriate name with his affinity for his squeaky chicken. I always loved Jethro's plight of deciding whether to be a brain surgeon or a fry cook. DOD I lnow you would know this but does anyone else know Jethro's real name? The actor not the dog.

I don't know about rain at your house but I had a real downpour at mine starting about 10:15 last night. I was glad to have it. Don't know how long it lasted though. I find rain a very relaxing sound to go to sleep by so guess what  happened ? You are correct. It didn't take long for me to be in the land of nod. A funny thing happened as the storm was building up. I was emptying the dishwasher and there was a huge clap of thunder close by. Liz came scurrying over and crawled under the open dishwasher door. Smart dog. . seek cover when the lightning starts!

Jim I saw that little note about Fuddrucker's also. If that happens we might think about convening the meeting at Roznovsky's on 34th @ T.C. Jester. Ron Roznovsky, the owner is a Waltrip alum, either '70 or '71.  Just a little tidbit about Ron, he played baseball at UT and pitched a no hitter in '73.

Keep on dancing,

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Rich LH, I know the answer!!! If no one else knows, call on me!!! Lubys has the same stuff theyve always had plus now, its all you can eat for 6.99 on Saturday! Pappas is turning them into the "hog trough" like "golden corral"! The pappas bbq, that was luthers, is a much better place than Luthers! Food is good too!!! Tillman Fertita has bought back a lot of the shares of the Pappas corp and is now the majority stock holder, or soon will be! He wants mor e control over the corp!

No rain here, other than a sprinkle! Rode my bike today, 165 miles, 3.83 gallons! And according to what I learnt in the JETHRO BEAUDINE SCHOOL OF CYPHERIN,  thats better than 40 MPG! I was head brain surgeon at the JBSOC, as well as captain of the hawg callin team!

Sky got black all round, huffed and puffed, but no rain! Boooooo!!! Was gonna cut the yard today, but looked like rain, and had to hold the couch down with Jack and Coop and Oliver and Katy! Now thats a heavy weight crowd rat there!

Startin to seriously think about my MC trip around Texas and or Montana, sometime in October...maybe!!!  If and when I go, some of yall would need to come over and help my beloved around the house, you know, walk coop and jack and brush the cats etc, clean the pool, flew de coup mow de lawn...Well, we will see what we will see, eh jethro!!!

Vacuum been broke for a week, broke belt! Finally went to sears and got the right belt and put er on today. First thing right out of the gate, sucked the curtains off the wall in the Library!!! You know, I dont do this stuff on purpose! My beloved comes home, and I'm trying to rehang the curtains, and did quite a good job too, all things considerin! But I still get the "teacher glare"!!!  How come it is, that the vac wont pick up a wad of wooly mammoth hair, but just let it get near the curtains, or some other valuable item in the house, like a sock or a just poured bowl of dry cat food, and whooooosh, it devours it! Probably suck down the TV If I got close enough!!! I hope I'm not vacuuming when DW or some other women comes in the house wearing a dress! Probably take it and her underwear! Then my vacuum cleaner would get arrested for being a masher! Why is it called "masher"???? Just what is a "masher"???? I know what it's supposed to mean, but really, where did the term come from??? Maybe the first guy that was caught not being a gentleman to the ladies, had mashed potatoes on his shirt???  Life is stranger than fiction sometimes, eh!!! Of course, I'm pretty much stranger than fiction too!!!

Guess I will sign off for now!!! Dogs and cats all layed out everywhere! Looks like the SPCA exploded all over our house!!!

Keep the sun at your 6 and ride boldly ride!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Burge, I think I sawr that or someother flying lawnmower on the telie! I had a flying lawnmower oncet! Dang thang pissed me off, so I threw it in the street!!! Entire neighborhood all went inside and locked their doors! I have had flying weed eaters and edgers and other equipment, not necessarily confined to lawn equipment! Hammers, saws, routers, and assorted wrenches etc...Sometimes things just piss me off, and I got to teach em how to fly! I tried to throw my truck once, but hurt my back instead!!!  Of course ive mellowed somewhat in my reclining years!!!

The sweet little girl next door baked a loaf of bread for me this morn, and then they went on vacation to Destin, Florida! I just love fresh baked bread...well duh, who doesnt???

Think I will go have a slice of it now...with real butter...and blackberry preserves...hmmm hmmm hmmm...

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

Hey all,

Well its taken me a half hour at least to catch up on all the emails, like coming home and getting a big hello with hugs and " a wealth of info....errrhhh, and Happy Happy Birthday, many more in the future, Beau.  All the pics of the last Fudds are a reflection of a healthy nice looking group of happy people!  Euuurah!

I've been busy trying to get school info up to date and attempting to catch up with chores and added events.  I've had grandchildren and their children moving in and out on a regular basis the last 6 mos. and I'm wondering if that is the reason my two dogs are both chewing on their legs and paws.  Our relationship has changed somewhat, and they've had to contend with a mighty 1-1/2 yr old who pinches, pats, and tries to sit on them.  My bedroom is their retreat of sorts.  Could also be allergies, fleas (brought in two dogs next door who belong to the guy in my congregation who mows and helps around the place)  unfortunately, he hasn't taken on the responsibility of shots, heart worm, flea problems and they've infected my place) nor fertility.  One is a mutt who favors "skunks" and always walks around with a strong smell of them...hard to love that one, and a pit bull he brought on without asking.  It's a cute one, they always are as puppies, but now I have to watch him around the dogs, cat and babies!  I don't trust
"pit bulls"  Does anyone have any suggestions on the leg chewing?  Today I'm going to bomb the inside of the house, spray them when I get home and spray the yard and outside perimeters where the above other dogs hang out, trying to get into the yard. I think the wet weather and humidity may also be responsible for the fleas.

Everything changes, but I hope Fudd's will continue, I'm going to try to get there July...Luby's used to be a wonderful and economic place to get good food, but the food is not so good and the prices have gone sky-high.  Where do they want "Old Seniors" to congregate?  Took a friend to Golden Corral but the food is not as good as it once was....movies are shallow presentations of what we all remember as well.

Oh well...good reading, keep on growing, Liz! and keep on dancing, good for the heart and head.

Teddie Jordan

Went fishing down at Aransas on Saturday and caught a fine mess of Speckled Trout. We ate some for dinner last night and they sure were good.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him and his family for a lifetime.

06/27/10 07:27 PM #2813

Beau Wann, Jr.

Hey Theo,  anytime I want fish, I have to go to K rogers! No one taught me to fish! They didnt have that course in the JETHRO BEAUDINE SCHOOL OF CYPHERIN, BRAIN SURGERY AND DOUBLE NAUGHT SPY SCHOOL.  I am, however, open for the proper fishing instructions, from the proper instructor!!!  I do not even own a fishing rod!!! What sort of man has no fishing equipment??? I use to own severl rods and reels! Ah and fine they were too!  I forgot what brand they were! Probably Zebco, or Garcia!!! I remember I use to love to peruse the fishing equipment at sears and oshmans and just about any sporting goods store!  I guess I lost interest because I never caught any fish, even when they were biting! I remember standing shoulder to shoulder with the wild bunch, on the banks of Lake Livingston when it was semi-new! We, They, were reeling in the large mouth and small mouth just one after another, from 1 pound to several pounds apiece! My line lay slack in the water like it wasnt there! I was using the same bait and same equipment, but I got nary a nibble! I even swapped rigs with them all, and the line on each and every one went slack! While the one I WAS using, started catching fish!!!! Dangdest thing I ever saw! Something like that sort of worries on a feller! I never wet a line again! I only went when I took my boys! I showed them what I knew, which wasnt much, so I faked it pretty good!

They caught their first fish in wolf park at lake livingston! Some blue gill, little pan fish! they had a blast! Now, they are both excellent hunters and fishermen! Always get what they go after!!!

Oh, I went one time with a girl, same park, wolf park at lake livingston!  She was a girlfriend for about a week! She was 18 and I was almost 30! Her name was Carol Ann! She was built like the proverbial brick outhouse! About an 18 inch waist and the rest of her was a sight to behold!!! You could a set of bunny ears on her, and voila, playmate of the year!!!  But I digress! We got to wolf park before daybreak, and got already for first light! there were a lot of boats in the cove, each with about 4 fishermen!  We put our lines in along the shoreline, and the fish were taking the bait, but not the hook! My little darlin, Carol Ann, started cussin at the fish, and you could hear her all over the lake!  No sooner would she toss in her line, and the bream, or blue gill, would relieve her of her bait!!! She would just cuss a blue streak! Make a chief bosuns mate blush!!!! She had a husky voice, almost like she had a cold all the time, but that was just her!  By daybreak, there were no boats in sight of land, or at least where we were!  In fact, we were the only ones in the park or probably left at the lake that day! She could cusss a blue streak *%^&#$*^%&()_(^*)&^*&(^%$*#&%$*%^(^)*!!!

Her roommate in college, and I forget the college, was none other than Johnny Hortons Daughter! Carol ann said if she heard that *&^%$^&#$@&*( song again about the three legged horse, she was gonna *&^$#^@^#&$*%(^)&_ puke!!! Or words to that effect!!!    The song was Johnny Hortons "Comanche", Custers favorite Horse and the last one standing at the battle of the Little Big Horn!!!! Ol Carol Ann was cute, and fun...I had forgotten all about her until teddie mentioned fishing!!!

I loved playing poker, until I lost every time I ever played! Anytime I ever won a hand, everyone else dropped out! I never even got openers, generally Jacks or better! Use to play with the wild bunch alot, but never won! Pair of twos was a high hand to me! I love poker, but just unlucky!!!

WEll suppers ready, so gotta run...

Robert Derrick

Rich LH,

Did you mean his real name which I think was Max Baer. I still remember how much my mom and dad enjoyed watching that show. We watched it together and I recall how they would laugh out loud. And the Red Skelton Hour. They were country folks and could relate. Those were good times.

06/27/10 08:08 PM #2815

Robert Derrick

And Teddie,

Isn't there a story about someone who fed thousands with his catch? Where was our invite?

06/28/10 10:22 AM #2816

Richard Meek '65

Robert, you are correct. Although technically his name is Max Baer, JR. His dad was a professional boxer.  He was world heavy  weight champ . That show and Red Skelton were big favorites at our house also. I noticed the other night that PBS was running one of the old Victor Borge specials. He's been dead a while but his material is still funny.

Kay, good to hear from you you it's been a while. The fleas are just terrible this year. One of the best things I've run across is a once a month pill you can get from the vet called Comfortis. It is really effective for flea control. Don't give it to any puppies though. I think they have to be over 6 mos. old. but your vet can clarify that for you. Your dogs chewing on their paws could be anxiety over the change in routine or the flea infestation may be the cause. So I guess the solution is send the grandkids home and get rid of the fleas. Both easier said than done.

As far as Liz continuing to grow. . .there doesn't seem to be any slowing that down. Even with all the frustrations that go with a puppy, I love having her around.

DOD, I think you're getting your restrauteurs confused. Chris and Harris Pappas are the owners of Pappas Bros. (sort of fits since they're brothers). Tillman Ferttita is the majority shareholder of Landry's Restaurants. About the only Luby's I ever eat in is the one at San Felipe and Post Oak so I don't have a lot perspective. I think the food is still pretty good but their prices are definitely way up. That was inevitable since they bought it when the company was broke. I think modifying their menu with some new items was long overdue. That Luby's on 34th hadn't changed their menu in 40 years. Luby's biggest selling item though is still their mac and cheese. As best I can tell it hasn't changed. If you really want good food in a cafeteria go to Edo's Cafe on the Park. Just happens to be a client of mine. But Edo cooks everything himself. He doesn't use any butter, fats or MSG. His food is very health conscious but very tasty. Ken Olivier can back me up on that because I know he likes it also. Fellow Waltripian Don Haley and his wife Joanie are in there frequently. Edo's is only open for breakfast and lunch. It's in the Amegy Bank Building just inside Loop 610.. I like supporting small businesses. It seems like Landy's and Pappas Bros. must have 35% of all the restaurants in town.

Tater, your tale about sucking the drapes off the wall made me think of that old Peter Sellers movie when Inspector Clouseau is posing as a housekeeping employee in a hotel and winds up sucking a parrot into a vaccum cleaner. Do the cats and dogs go into hiding when you get the vc out?

Sir Theodore, if you get around to conducting remedial fishing lessons let me know. It's been so long since I've done that I doubt that I'd remember how to properly tie a line. So I could use a refresher course myself. It sounds like taking DOD fishing is a good idea. He drives the fish to other peoples line. That's a new one on me but as Tater admits he is a unique individual.  As I see it that's a good thing. Perhaps we could interest the Duke of DuBarry in a few hands of poker afterward!

Well everyone just keep on praying, crossing your fingers, dancing around the campfire or whatever you do to bring good luck that we don't get hit with a hurricane this summer!

I'll look forward to seeing whoever shows up a Fudd's this coming month.  Kay's comments about people having a good time is accurate. Come on out. Surprise yourself and have some fun.

Keep on dancing,

Rich LH

All,

I like to read cowboy stories and just read a passage from “Jack Hildreth Among the Indians” written in 1893 by Karl May. It’s a storey about a young man raised by his uncle, a tenderfoot German immigrant civil engineer working in New Mexico. His uncle’s code was as follows:

‘Fear God but no man. Never lie, or sneak, or truckle for favor. Never betray a trust. Never be cruel to man or beast. Never inflict pain, but never be afraid to meet it if you must.  Be kind, be honest, be daring. Be a man and you will be a gentleman.’

Good advice then and now for young men.

Weather in Minneapolis MN today : High of 75F

Fished last week in a small (200 acre), man made, 10 year old county park lake in SE Iowa and my bro-in-law  and I caught about 90-100 big mouth bass the first three days to about 3 lb and finally got a wall hanger on the 5th day of 20"/4-5 lbs with a mouth big enough to easily insert a softball! We throw 'em all back, just lip piercing.

Ted, I need to know where your guide took you, I hope you had your GPS on board and marked the spots. I hav'nt been catching many keeper trout down there but also don't fish with live bait either.

howwwwwwwwdyyyyyyy, (minnie pearl for howdy),     Kay, Go to your vet, and I believe that the pill Rich Lh mentioned is what we gave Rocky! it works! Also if you can get some insecticide and spread it in the yard like you are spreading fertilizer, that helps control the fleas! use to use Diazinon and some other, but they banned that! Seven dust helps control fleas! It is non toxic to critters, and you can apply it directly on your dog or cat! I used it in the garden on the maters and corn and stuff! Works ok!!! Nothing is 100% effective, yet! And when it is, they ban it usually because they arent getting protection money! They banned DDT, which I think is a ok thing, however, we, the US guvermint sold it all to mexico! They put it on all their vegies and then sell the produce to who...why us of course!!! Ignorance can be corrected, but stupid is forever!!!

Yeah, Rich, you are right, I got my antemansewers all mixed up!!! But heck, they are all peas in a pod...like you, i like to support the small bidnesses and mom and pop stores! sure wish more folks felt that way, instead of going to wallifreakinmart!!!!   I havent been to EDos though, will make it a point to go one these days! If any of youse would like to meet for lunch or breakfast down there, let me knwo! I'll try to watch my manners and not spill the tea all over the place!!!

Yes Robert, it was Max Baer Jr that played jethro beaudine! His daddy was a fighter of sorts, really a clown! Liked to clown around in the ring! He fought Max schmeling in 1933 and got KOd in the 10th round! Dont know how he lasted that long with Max Schmeling! Mr Schmeling joined the german army in 1941, and went into the paratroopers, and was injured in the battle of Crete! Just a little know factoid to amuse your cranium brainiums!!!

Don Teos has a fish plate, shrimp, catfish and other stuff, for about 7.99! The owner/manager said they offered it for lent, as a special, then when lent was over, stopped serving it, and customers wanted it back, so, voila, it are back!!! I havent tried it, but is probably good!!!

Heres another bit of sad news, The Toy Store in the village, that has been there for better than 60 years or so, is finally closing! The daughter of the original owners has been running it for 10 years! TS allison caused them 50K dollars in damage, plus the recession, and then the construction in the village area, has finally taken it's toll! She said she hasnt had a salary in 5 years, trying to keep the store going! Sad Sad Sad!!! I went in there as a kid, and took my boys in there when they were kids, and our grandchildren in there! It was a w2onderful store, juust packed with all the memories we as kids enjoyed and grew up with!  I think Moelers bakery is still in bidness in the village! It was wonderful! Back in the 50s, you could get a coke for a nickel and a piece of pie for .15 cents! REAL PIE, mad with REAL SUGAR and BUTTER and EGGS...

Speaking of eggs, fixed my patented breakfast yesterday morn, and FOUND A DOUBLE YOLK egg! Cant remember the last time I had one of those! Probably 40 years or so! That was so cool!

speaking of eating, I'm hungry, and it is lunch time! Tuna on Rye (seedless of course)! see yall later...

Ok, I stand corrected! It was Max Baer that defeated Max Schmeling by TKO. Before he fought Schmeling, He fought Frankie Campbell, and beat him so bad Campbell died the next day! There was a movie made about it, using different names! I think cagney or garfield played in it! I will have to look it up!

After Schmeling, Baer fought then heavyweight champion the Italian fighter, Primo Carnera who weighed in at 275 pounds! I thought I read somewhere that he weighed in over 325, but no matter! Baer beat Carnera in a decision and became the Heavyweight champion for almost a year, or right at a year!

Then along come the "Cinderella Man" James Braddock, who was a down and out fighter, never having really done very well! Baer was always clowning in the ring and didnt train for this fight! Braddock trained very hard for this one! Baer was favored 8 to 1 , but clowned around in the ring the whole fight, and lost a 15 round unanimous decision to Braddock! I think it was scored 9 rounds to braddock and 6 to Baer!

More little known factoids to make your brain say, "what"????

Beau, you're going to have to get out more. Moeller's has moved. They're now located on Bellaire Blvd. across the street from  a YMCA. If you're heading west on Bellaire it's on the south side of the street just before you cross the RR tracks into Bellaire. I think the building used to be a HoJo's. Their advertising says they're in West U. but I think West U is actually on the other side of Bellaire Blvd. I'll have to look into that.  Anytime you want to break bread at Edo's let me know. I office just around the corner. I walk over a lot days for lunch. If you talk nice to her SisJ might join us. She offices very near too and Ken Olivier lives near by.. As DOD said anyone is welcome. By the way if you eat the lasagne, it's the real deal. Edo is from Peruja, Umbria, Italy.

Since you're talking boxing, do you remember Roy Harris?

I'll give you a chip shot.  . . what was Ellie May Clampitt's (since I'm sure you lusted after her as a youte) real name? And Granny's real name?

Rich

I think that the food at Luby's is still OK, but the prices exceed what you would pay at a medium priced sit down and order restaurant.  The addition of waiters doesn't make sense, I thought the little ladies coming around and refilling your tea glass were fine.  It also doesn't seem like they have done any updating on the furnishings.  The few Luby's that I have been in lately seem dark, dingy, and dated.

Ken Olivier also likes Cleburne's cafeteria and always wants to go there.  However, while the food is good, I try to avoid the place.  It gives me a picture of where most of us will be in ten years or so (if we are lucky).  To put it mildly, the clientele seems to be predominantly of (very) advanced age.  By advanced age, my observance is that many, if not most, are on walkers or in wheel chairs.  I expect to see employees tying helium filled balloons to the walkers and wheel chairs to help people identify and avoid them.  Whenever I am in there, I fully expect at least one diner to assume room temperature.  It could take hours for someone to notice.

why shucks Rich, Donna Douglas was Ellie May, and Irene Ryan was Granny! She was only about 35 when she played granny, but also died young! Contrary to popular belief, Donna Douglas wasnt my type! I didnt pay her much mind, her role was too silly! I like em to be able to count without looking at their fingers and toes, and not have a chimp attached to em!!!

I liked em to be intelligent! Dated quite a few phi beta kappas! They liked having said they "went out with the "bad boy" from the other side of the tracks"! Hells bells, that was ok with me! I dated one that had a PHd, and we use to...well, I better not tell that one!!! They're probably sitting around now, talking about me, if they could remember me, saying"I went out with this guy, that was sooooo dumb..."

It isnt brag, when I speak of some of the ladies I went out with, I didnt look at the women I dated as conquests, or trophys, and I dont speak of them that way! I am a people watcher, observer...shucks, I considered it a conquest if I could get through a meal with out spilling sonething on me or them, or turning the table over!!!! I did that one time, well, it was an itty bitty table, and I just stood up when they came back from powdering their nose, and knocked that table with all the goodies on it over on em!!!! Something like that made for a real short evening!!!!

One time I was with a young lady in Coronado California, at Marios, a fine Italian restaurant! I had never seen anyone bring a cart around with desserts on three levels! I just took my spoon, and sorta tasted from a few still on the cart! How was I to know you were just suppose to point to which ever one you wanted and THE WAITER would place it in front of you! They didnt do that at burger king, or dairy queen!  I was in the navy!!!! You push one o them carts around in the mess hall on a ship, or other installation, and it wouldnt get a yard before it was emptied!!! Needless to say, my california dreamin about my california girl, was short lived!!!

Went out with a staunch womens libber! Now I am all for equality all around! It never bothered me, and still doesnt if a woman or any race of person makes more than me, or drives a better car, or belongs to a country club etc...But this PERSON would just send daggers my way and want to fight, when I opened the door for her or performed someother genteel action that was instilled in me by my Mom and DAd, like opening a door for anyone, not just a lady, but especially a lady for sure, and pulling their chair out for them to sit down, and standing up when a lady entered or left the room, or when anyone my senior entered or left the room, or offering my seat to a lady, 8 to 80, didnt matter, or to anyone my senior!  If my mom or dad was around, I better not be sitting whilst a lady was standing!!!!!!!    Just good ol southern customs, meant totally as RESPECT to whomever!!! I see nothing wrong with that practice! I dont do it much anymore, which is sad I think!  I really like well defined lines in society! And I know the next thought from some folks, is "I like people to know  their PLACE"!!!!  No, I liked to know where MY PLACE WAS, not others!!! Shoot, I know I'm as rough as an old cobb...I do have a few smooth edges, and sometimes I can even find em too!!!

I still try to open the door for my beloved, or anyone that happens to be going inside or outside with me! Not practicing it much anymore, sometimes I forget to do that, nowadays!

Talking about fighters, Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams was from Houston, and was a strong fighter, but had a problem with being scared if his first punch didnt put you down on the canvas! Which gave him a glass jaw so to speak! I saw him hit someone in the stomach, in the ring, and it picked that ol boy up level with the top rope! He hit him in the side of the head, and looked like someone had sprayed blood everywhere with an atomizer! Remember, he took a .357 slug point blank range to the stomach, and survived, and even fought Casius Clay back in 66 methinks! Saw it at a theater on closed circuit TV in San Diego! He had Clay backed into a corner twice, and was gonna throw that killer right, and nothing clay could do about it except absorb it, and Williams didnt throw it, and backed out and let clay out of the corner! I thought he could take Clay, but Williams looked scared! When I saw him let clay out of the corner twice and not hit him, I knew then, the fix was in! there was talk that the black muslims had gotten to him and told him to lose, just like sonny liston! Liston never put up much of a fight, he just layed down and lost! If you have access to the tapes, look at em! You'll see what I saw!!! One of listons fists was as big as two of Clays, plus he had reach on him and size and weight! Its a shame that so many of the fights were fixed by whoever, for whatever reason! Mostly for money to be sure!!!

Now, clay was fast, and a good boxer, and could take a hell of a beating, and still come at you! But those two fights had to be rigged!!!

Do you remember Ezzard Charles???? There is a street over by me named after him! It is just north of Tidwell, and there is a street named Tuskeegee, in honor of the valiant airmen in WWII! They escorted the bombers over the english channel to their targets, and back, and never lost a bomber or a fighter! They flew my favorite plane, P51 mustang! Rushs Father flew P51s in WWII!!! that was one prop driven plane that was capable of 437 miles and hour, and probably more in a dive!!!  It had a Packard/Merlin engine!!! It had a range of just over 2000 miles, and could stay on station for 8 hours, and had a ceiling of almost 42,000 feet, and could climb about 3500  feet a minute!!! Good plane that one!!!

Ok, yall are probably napping at this juncture, so I will sign off...

Maybe I missed this one in all the cafeteria discussion - what about Allbritton's?  Closed, too?

Spent the week working the Guitar Foundation of America Convention and Competetion...No stratocasters, but lots of fantastic nylon string classical guitars. There are so many makers now! And the players were fantastic. young  teenagers playing pieces that Andres Segovia would have been proud to play. There were about 800- 1000 registered, about 150 competitors from all over the world. Sunday nights Artist finals had a Swede, Russian, Belaruse and a Brazilian, sorta a World Cup for Classical Guitar. I thought the Russian or the Brazilian was best, but the judges picked the Swede. Maybe you're the best if you can play extremely difficult pieces that are hard to follow and the only emotion conveyed is pain?

Speaking of Fenders. I had a fender bender yesterday, no one hurt and only one parking light busted on the 95 Lexus that hit me. I never saw the car coming, as I was changing lanes. I think that they never saw me either going too fast probably. Oh well I guess it is time to start taking the bus.

Wanted to let you know about one of our very own who just won two first places for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. In an article about reporters Amy Upshaw and C.S. Murphy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette it told of them winning the I.F. Stone Award for investigative reporting at the annual Arkansas Press Association luncheon, it also mentioned that the Gazette won 11 first-place awards and Gary Keith was awarded two of those awards for his articles, one in the General Interest Column and one in the Humorous Column. He received a call from the editor of the Gazette to come in next week for him to be able to meet Gary face to face and to treat him to a nice lunch.  Contratulations Gary.
