Diane, thank you so much for all you do for Mr. Wann.  He, and you, have graced us with so much comedy and it has been fun reading his messages.  Praying you will have a fantastic new year.  May 2022 be the best you have ever had, and I also wish this for all of our classmates.  Just wish I had not been so bashful for my three years there on 34th street.

All is quiet on the Waltrip front.  Praying Mr. Wann is getting better, with strength returning and recovering physical and mental faculies . . . . . Played golf 3 times this week.  Once bundled up, once in sweats and today in shorts.  January's winter has been hit and miss.

Hoping to return to the barroom dance halls and the ballroom dance floors soon.  During this Covid mess, we have only been dancing a couple of times, and my body has attrified . . . . . I need some exercise.  Need to get back in shape.  I also miss my dance friends and students.  Three years ago, we were meeting up at least once a week.

Friends, stay safe and healthy.  And Go, Rams . . . . .

Well Bennie, that is a great way to exercise. Does keep the muscles and everything else in shape.  Golf also has a lot of walking, especially if you slice those balls into the trees...lol.  I really enjoy watching golf on TV, always been interested in playing golf, didn't have the time or money though.

Really miss our Beau-man, although thoses fingers will bring him back, as I don't know how this would all work without him.  I'm going to attend a Knights of Columbus benefit in Anderson tomorrow, should be a fun time for a good cause.

Planned to visit Keith last week but was told the staff had 2 positive Covid cases and since nursing facilities are notorious for being large scale petri dishes, I have not gone and have not received any news from his siblings either.

Experiencing Covid fatigue – this crap was not in my retirement plans………..

Back in South Texas since Jan 4th and have nearly thawed out now – we went on a ½ mile walking tour of Christmas lights at the Minneapolis arboretum Jan 2 night with a low ambient temp of – 20 F without wind chill! It was a brisk walk followed by hot adult drinks…………

Like many others in our age group, I’ve been keep’in busy myself ticking the boxes on my ‘ist list’……….dentist, dermatologist, cardiologist, orthopedist, ophthalmologist,   pharmacist……….

Been watch’in way too much TV, especially news and google’n things I don’t understand which is an enormous array of useless info and I will share one of my profound findings below:

Thomas Jefferson once said something like, “My great grandfather was a warrior so my grandfather could be a farmer so that my father could be a merchant so that I could be a scholar”.

Tom Brokaw appropriately referred to our parents’, as ‘the Greatest Generation’ and I have called our Waltrip64 generation, born immediately after the end of WW2 as ‘the luckiest generation’ cause we have enjoyed a downhill economy here in the USA, especially those of us growing up in suburban Houston TX into WASP, two parent families, resulting in many of us now driving Mercedes, Lexus and some even, Corvettes (Lynn, Larry, others?).

However, there may be Camels on the Horizon for future generations……

The founder of Dubai, Sheik Rashid, was asked about the future of his country, and he replied, "My grandfather rode a camel, my father rode a camel, I ride a Mercedes, my son rides a Land Rover, and my  grandson is going to ride in a Land Rover…but my great-grandson is going to have to ride a camel again. “Why is that, he was asked?

And his reply was, “Hard times create strong men, strong men create easy times. Easy times create weak men, weak men create difficult times.’ Note: For accuracy this US based history lesson, insert ‘women’ for men.

Many may not agree, but we need to raise warriors, not parasites.

And add to that the historical reality that all great empires, the Persians, Trojans, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and in recent years, the British...all rose and perished within 240 years.

They were not conquered by external enemies; they rotted from within.

America has now passed that 240-year mark, and the rot is starting to be visible and is accelerating. We are past the Mercedes and Land Rover Years….the camels are on the horizon. The greatest generation consisted of 18-year-old kids storming the beaches at “Normandy”. And now, two generations later, some 18-year-old kids want to hide in safe rooms when they hear words on Facebook or Instagram that hurt their feelings. They also want free stuff from the government because they think they are entitled to it.

The ‘camels are on the horizon’ for sure…

From Aransas where the wind is howl’n out of the North at 25-40 mph, so brewing up a batch of my own recipe of vegetable soup and sweet cornbread probably adding a few more Covid lbms,  wtl

Wayne, I am sorry to say that I think you are right on target.I hope and pray that we can recognize that our future generations will have the fortitude and work ethic to make us wrong, but we worry about the future that our grandchildren will inherit!

Wayne and Ted,

You both could be right, but I see other things happening that give me hope. I honestly think that there is a new awakening bubbling up that we just don't hear that much about because it does not get the airtime that all the negative stuff gets. Unfortunately, much of this lack of airtime is by design but folks are beginning to see through some of this and I think awareness is building.

God bless America!

On a lighter (musical) note, check out what I think is the best ever ‘Tear in Your Beer’ C&W song. Yep, even better than Ray Price’s ‘Bubbles in my Beer’ or Hank William’s ‘Tear in my Beer’ (the real Hank not Jr.) or George Jones’ ‘Little Bitty Tear Let Down’ or ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’, any of which may be considered by some to be the standard. But I always liked Willie’s 1982 recording of Gary Nunn’s ‘The Last thing I Needed the First thing this Morning’ as the best and then I heard his son, Lucas’ 2020 acoustical solo Utube version of the same song and everything changed. Willie’s hit was a top flight studio recording with full orchestra arrangement as compared to Lucas’ which appears to be just him sitting alone in his home studio (have not heard it on any album).

In this case, the acorn not only didn’t fall far from the tree, the acorn is now the tree………… since even Willie will not live forever (his diaphragm has been diminished for several years probably from too much smoke), the future of Texas country music is apparently safe for another 50 years or so and although Lucas was born and grew up in Maui, I believe he thinks of Texas as his musical home and fan base (ref: ‘Just Outside of Austin’).

Larry, I hope you are correct as well as always being a happy guy and an eternal optoimist. Maybe that hopeful generation are all riding bicycles as we speak. I don't think this potential problem is political by nature nor can it be solved by politics, it is simply a cultural issue which transends politics.

History repeats. wtl

Wayne, you are so right about Lukas Nelson.  Great voice.  He sings a variety of genres.
i have been blessed with four grandchildren who are durable enough to face the coming age of challenge.

three of them spent ther formative years on the Mission field in bucharest Romania. They all pitched in on clinic days - even the youngest to get patients seen and medicines distributed.  When I was visiting I was put to work also.  It was good for them.  Their daddy has been great teaching them from a young age to be responsible with their time
i raised two princesses.  I am sorry.

my other granddaughter has been motivated all her life to excel.  Her parents have encouraged her every step of the way.  I don't know her as well as other grandchildren.  My younger daughter had a child a month before her 18th birthday.  She gave baby daughter up through a private adoption agency..  we met her when she was 18 and had decided she wanted to meet birth mother.  Beth had died several years earlier so she decided she wanted to meet the rest of us.  She is 26 now and getting married.
listened to two hour CSpan history discussion with four authors.  I was in hospital this past week with heart failure and pneumonia so I had two hours to spend.  One man said that Benjamin Franklin had one son.  Son was loyal to England because he had been grand poobah of New Jersey.  Franklin never spoke to him again.  Said he hated him.  Wow.  Never heard that before.
I MISS BEAU.

This is coming from Kay Derrick, Robert's wife, and the following not necessarily the views of Mr. Derrick.   Have you heard of "The Great Reset," the latest book by Glenn Beck.  Wayne Lake's comments are right on, and it behoves us all to be aware of what is on the horizon for this country and the world.  Thanks Robert!

Prayers to you, Pat, that you get well quick!  My goodness.  surprise

----------------------------.

Here's a memory of mine about Willie:

I had been volunteering at the Austin Free Clinic for a couple of years when we were asked to provide a medical tent at Willie Nelson’s 1st 4th of July Picnic in 1973.  I went but they soon asked for one of us to instead help out in the ‘office area’ because they were short-handed there, so I did.  It was chaos, a disorganized mess.  I am not surprised that the concert lost money.  Afterwards I was asked to help out at a number of concerts, again in the ‘office areas’.  I did this for a couple dozen concerts and then got tired of the muggy heat, the chaos, the crazy crowds, the super-loud music, etc.  It was fun, though, for a while

About the concert:.

The birth of an iconic festival happened in Dripping Springs on the year of 1973!  In 1972, Willie was on the lineup bill for the Dripping Springs Reunion, and fortunate for the Willie fans, the reunion did not meet expectations due to poor attendance.  Nelson was interested in this concept and in 1973, he decided to host the first annual Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic in the same place, only this time, Willie brought  over 40,000 hippies and rednecks.  The Picnic lost money, but launched a Texas tradition.

The lineup was:  Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall, Loretta Lynn, Hank Snow, Tex Ritter, Bill Monroe.

"It was miserable and it was great, one of the glorious heathen stomps between the Americas of J. Edgar Hoover, Joe McCarthy and Ronald Reagan.

How fantastic Steve.  I would have loved to meet Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson.  I was born for aiir conditioning though.  My grandson lives in 'south Austin' now which is really Dripping Springs.  I look at my life as layers.  First layer was Oak Forest.  Great foundation.  Second layer was folk singers.  Third layer was church and stewardess adventures.  Fourth was marriage, children. Chaos of having people live with us.  Fifth was beginning and running a business.  Now sixth is retirement.  Sometimes it is icing on the cake and sometimes it feels like mud pies.
i can not believe some of the adventures I have had but I am glad for the memories.  I am thankful that my church group is still together (since 1963) and my marriage is still strong (since 1969).  We are blessed to have been raised in Oak Forest aka Mayberry.

Please keep our fellow classmate, Jimmie Sue Roach Nation, in your prayers today as she has a graveside service for her husband, Bob.  They were married 32 years and he will be a great loss to her.  Fortunately, she has strong faith and it will comfort her during this time.

Beau Wann, Jr.

This is Diane typing for Beau. We are saying prayers for Jimmie Sue and Keith and everybody who needs prayers. Beau's latest MRI (his 17th!) was Jan. 14th. It didn't show any substantial changes, so he took another round of chemo pills this week.  He has an infusion of a different chemo on Tues. Jan 25th.His only complaint is that it is too cold! He tires easily, but is still fighting it. His left hand has a mind of it's own an does what it wants. It makes it hard to type.

Love to all from Beau and Diane. And thanks for your continud support!!

Classmates, I guess this is us: health concerns as we grow older. It is so sad for all of us. I remember my Mom saying that everyone she loved was dying. What can we do but pray a lot for each other and to realize there is always someone whose battle is harder than ours! My heart is full for all who are suffering illness or sorrow. We need to have strength from each other. 😘

Well said, Mary Weidner (Williams).  As we continue to age, we should expect more health issues or worse.  I am grateful we have such a close and caring class to pray and look after us.

Thank you, Diane, for giving us an update on Beau.  I am so sorry for all that both of you have been through.  I hope the chemo pills help Beau and he will soon be back on the Forum telling stories like only he can.  Please keep us posted.

Prayers for all of the classmates that are ill or going through rough times.

From Diane Wann this morning:

Beau has been in MD Anderson hospital since Tuesday afternoon.  They don't know how long he'll be there yet.  He's had lots of chemo effects.  They are in the observation unit - probably moving to Neuro Unit later today.

Let's pray for Beau's medical staff to find the cause of his issues and find healing for him.  Pray for Diane - keeping vigil in a hospital room is hard.

Prayers for Beau and Diane, the medical staff and of course, all of us here on the Forum.  We are all aware of the fragility of our health as we are entering the fourth quarter of our life spans.

Mary - agreed.

Glenn -uplifting, however, I still lose my train of thought and forget names I could bring up quickly!  and the cure for that   ?
