ah,the chineese;what clever fellows.we have to buy thier junk,we are used to having things;so used to it that we forget the threats made against us every day.the west seems to believe that we can absorb any "punch"our enemy wants to lay on us.hamas is right down below our border and no one can think of a thing to do about it;have we lost all of our strength and possibility?there was a time when no nation or entity would dare attack the u.s.;now we just cringe and wait.what is going on people?all the polititian cares about is his electability, making nice for the great arena;selling off our power to the lowest bidder.here i am,dangling on the edge of my broken health and it still bothers me more than if i wake up tomorrow.the people of america deserve better.is it just me?has cabin fever taken my sense of humor and appreciation?mabe there is a reason;i know its not all me;others around me express dismay regardless of what political party they belong to.its something different this time.you just cant quite put your finger on it but its there.hope is making it through this year without another attack on our soil,at least that would demonstrate some policy.here is an iconoclast, hoping.

I think people's attitudes to some degree are influenced by the stage of life they are in. I think people are also greatly influenced by societal circumstances. Such as 18 mos. ago we were staring into an abyss that had the potential to repeat the Great Depression of the 1930s. That issue is improving but still has people spooked. I think if you look at history you find that people behave pretty similarly in every age. Just the technology changes. Human nature doesn't change much. The Roman politicians built public housing projects and had the Circus Maximus so the pepole would keep re-electing them. Our founding fathers pulled political stunts that rivaled if not surpassing todays. They weren't simon pure. At least I'm not aware of any on them fighting duels and trying to actually kill each other today. As far a people being afraid to attack the U.S. I'm not sure when that was. If I remember Teddy Roosevelt had to deal with Barbary pirates attacking American ships in the Mediteranian Sea. In 1942 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the Germans had
U-boats attacking shipping on the East and Gulf Coast. If you remember in the 1950s we were going through all sorts of drills in school in case of attacks by the Russians and some people put bomb shelters in.In 1961 Krushev tried to send missiles to Cuba. I think things ebb and flow. There never has been and never will be a time when everything is hunky dory and we live in Nirvana. You just do the best you can with what is happening. Easy to say, hard to do.

On a lighter note. Did you see Lindsey Vonn's gold medal performance in the Women's Down Hill last night. Was that gutsy or what? She finished the race with her right ski not toudching the snow it was hurting so much and still did well enough to win the gold. And she did it on a course that was so tough that three of the top skiers fell. Just amazing, what a competitor!

Okay, here is another movie challenge. Who was the star in the movie Evil Roy Slade?

goot eefening mine liebchens,
Been on a mission! Had to get to the ranch and check on stuff! Lots o water at the south gate, some of the county road washed away! Rickety ol bridge, still there and still rickety!!!
Lots and lots of Hawks on the way there and back! Even saw a few dead on the side of the road! Probably tried to tackle one of the many chicken 18 wheelers we have roaming the area! Anytime you get behind one of them critters, you best back off!!! I didn't, and had to pull over at the first car wash I could find!

Hwy 90, or is it 39, well, no matter, is two lane blacktop, and I was trying to pass the chicken truck, so I got closer and closer, and was waiting for my moment, when I noticed two things, feathers, and a whitish grey substance, and things were getting blurry! "Hells bells, I'm going blind" I exclaimed to no one in particular. I guess maybe to God and his angels! Didnt get an answer right away though!!! THEN, OUT OF THE BLUE, I GOT AN EPIPHANY!!!! I wasnt going blind, IT'S CHICKEN POOP!!!!!!

Chicken poop all over my truck and windshield!!! See how sharp I am, nothing gets past me!!! Now thats just chicken shift!!! Glad I wasnt on my MC! I'd a been in dire straights for sure!!!! Woulda been "slip slidin away", or words to that effect!!!

Pulled over in North Zilch at the onliest car wash in the county it seems like!!!! Cost me 4 dollars American, to get that "crap" offin my truck, and to be able to see agin!!!

Had Breakfast at the Denny's in Hempstead about 7 this morn! Waitress named "Flo" called me "hun"! I axed for the "senior scramble" and she wanted to see my ID!!! But then, gave me a wink and a smile!!! Some folks just have a way of makin you feel good dont they!!!!! She was very attentive, like a service person should be! And for that, she got a sizable tip! Well, for me it was sizable! you think .25 cents was too much????? NAH, LIGHTEN UP! I WAS JUST FUNNIN YA!!! Gave her .50 cents! Thats me, "Daddy warbucks"!!!!

Always have to stop in at North Zilch for my perfunctory cup o joe and a danish!!! The Dane wasnt there, so I just had a cup o joe!!!! I allus ask how bidness is, and he allus says the same think, "slow"!!!!

Met the fence guy at the back gate, and gonna get a bid for a gate offset! Angry Beaver couldnt make it, so i catch him next time! Parked the truck, and walked all over, checking feeders and cameras and the like! Most of the rye I planted is still there! Getting kind of dingy though! Lots o huge deer tracks and hog tracks! Saw three boars running through the center meadow! Thought I was gonna have to draw down on em, but guess they didnt like the odds, cause they veered off! I only had my .357 and 1911 .45, and 12 gauge shotgun! Wonder if I brought enough club???? I guess I am a scary critter at that, eh!!!!

It's gonna take me all damn summer to just warm up!!!! I cant believe I have gotten this danged cold natured!!! Use to be a furnace!!! Yeah yeah yeah, useta dont cut it anymore now does it!!!!

Hey Bernd!!!! You mean to tell me, that Krupp Kraut Steel aint as good as it usetabe????? What ever is this displaced kraut kracker gonna do now???????
Kaint depend on the chineeeese to do a good job, unless they put lead in it!! Now the Krauts are kaput!!!
All kidding aside, is Krupp still in bidness????
Also is there a Mauser factory, or at least a reminder???
Ol Mr Mauser new what the heck he was doing with his action and 7MM!!!

Speaking of kraut, thats hard to find, except in a can at krogers!!! The great german eateries in New Braunfels I guess are a thing of the past!!! Kind of makes you want to start a restaurant and serve your favorite food! Paige knows what I'm talkin about!!! But a restaurant is so iffy and the crowds are so fickle!!!! It would take many dedicated lovers of good food to make it work, and also folks that werent hell bent on becoming billionaires over night!!!!

Gotta run feed the critters! John boy and coop and at least 12 of the 6 cats are head-buttin me!!! Be back a tad later!!! I know, thanks for the warning!!!
Your pard the bard beauregard aka evil roy slade!

Ah yes, Jason Bourne is a fixin to kick this guys behind!!!!
I like the Bourne trilogys! Matt Damon is to fight scenes as Steve McQueen was to car chase scenes and being cool of course!!!

I kind of patterned my life after Steve McQueen! Yeah, its true!!!! Once again, McQueen was to cool as I was to clutzy! See, me and Mr Cool werent that far apart! Unless you consider 180 degrees far apart!!! Picky picky picky!!!

That drive really tires me out, so I think I will call it an evening! Yall jump rat on in here and chat!

Good night Mrs Simpson, where ever you are!!!
Your friend and brother
Evil Roy

PS Hey burge, so glad to hear from you! Hang in there and take er easy!
Also sometimes, when I dont get on here, I was actually on here, and typed out a long dissertation and or recollection, but I keep hitting a button, and I dont know which button it is, but it makes what I typed disappear!
Kant seem to figure our what I'm doing wrong!
So, I generally dont start again, I just go away and come back again later! Lots of stuff I have typed has not made it on the forum! Some probably a good thing too!!!

Beau Wann, Jr.

Good morrow gentle folk,
Thanks Burge, I will try the refresh, and also, maybe if I go back a screen on the back arrow! That sure is aggravating, type out a long winded masterpiece, only to have it disappear!!!!
47 gredees this moanin! Yesterday in 1936, it was 19!!!
Boy, do I remember that day! Jeese, everything was froze solid!!! Outhouse door was stuck, pump handle wouldnt work!
Couldnt get the ol Stutz Bearcat cranked up! Milkman delivered the milk and it froze, rat there on the front porch. Had milkcicles! Chickens wouldnt lay! What a year that was!!!

Hold on, gonna get the fireplace going! You know, I have seen those fireplaces that have a remote control!!!
Havent got a clue as to how that works! As far as my fireplace, I am the remote control!!! Now, ifin I can just get moving! Joints all froze up and stove up!!!

OK!!! Now thats better, sort of!!! Had to move Headquarters in front of the fireplace! All the cats and dogs are jockeying for position! Ladies?? Men?? go in order of seniority!!!! No pushing or shoving, women and children first!! SETTLE DOWN YOU IDJITS!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY FINGERS! MY FINGERS! CANT FEEL MY FINGERS!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Just poured hot coffee on my hands, and couldnt feel it!!!! Yeah, thats how cold it is here at the north pole!

Sorry Bernd, I know it isnt as cold here as it is in Berlin, but it does seem that way, at least to my young beautiful body!!!! Was that a snicker I heard??? Dont make me come over there mister!!!!

Ok, heres a movie question; In the movie **** **** *** **** who played ***** ******! Here is a hint, * **** **** *** ****** and * **** ***** * **** **** !!!! First correct answer wins an all expense paid (by the winner) vacation to North Zilch and a cup o joe at the Exxon station with the danish, if he's there! So, put on those thinking caps!

Now on to the news; An idiot ran his plane into a building, so we have our resident airplane expert to explain it to us! "Well, it was a single engine plane, they can fly pretty high, and fast too! It weighs about as much as your average suv and probably carries a littl more gas! But when it hits something like a building, it will crash, hard, and catch fire, and cause a mess"!!!
Thank you Orville Wright!!!!!!!

The news media and government agencies have become a group of idiots led by idiots, thinking they are talking to idiots!!! Thats why I dont watch the news anymore!!! They talk down to us like we are 2nd graders! Well, of course we arent as wonderful as they are!!! But I do believe I can figure out what happens in a plane crash!!!

Also it is sickening how each head of each agency lavishes praise on all the other agencies! We hear nothing of a useful nature, except; "I would like to thank the CIA AND THE FBI AND THE EMS ETC for their response and cooperation in handling this ongoing crisis! Each and every person in the CIA, FBI EMS ETC, and you know who you are, is just absolutely wonderful during this...(whispering) say, does anyone actually know what happened here??"

And when they get introduced by the moron before them, who gives their name and all information about who they are and what they do, then the next moron gets on and repeats what was just said!!! Ok Ok, I wont watch anymore!!! So, I am depending on you good folks out there to keep me informed! Tell me when to lock and load, and in what direction I need to point my tank!!!!

Speaking of tank, gonna go to the gun range today with a good friend that I worked with for 30 years! Got some of those new ear protectors that have a battery in them, that you wear, and can talk to one another, but when you fire, it cuts out the sound!!! Great tool that! But things like that drive my little pea brain crazy, Because I am forever trying to figure out how they get it to do that!!!! Sometimes it drives me to distraction!!!! But, I guess if I was smart enough to figure it out, I woulda come up with it and invented it!!!! And also not flunked algebra!!!

AAAWWWW that is so cute!!! John Boy is pretending he is handing me his rubber squeeky chicken, and then when I reach for it, he pulls it away!!! Maybe I could take him on that pet star show!!! Shucky darn, I could take the whole menagerie of mine! Big Oliver could run around with a boot or sack on his head, John Boy could tear up a sock, Coop could sit and look perplexed at his dinner bowl, Annie Bob could shove cans off the counter, peaches could howl at me at the top of her lungs, (Peaches is a small orange marmalade color exotic kitty with a face that looks like a kittens, she is 12 and weighs only 7 pounds, but she just howls at me to do something) Katy could stomp on me, and Lacy could turn her nose up at any and every food you give her, (then later on she sneaks in and eats it) and Sammy could be invisible! He hardly ever comes out!!!

I'm sure there's probably some I left out, but at my young and tender age, I have a tendency to forget names!!!
Ok, got to get the little woman off to her executive job, and go out on patrol! Looks like it's raining south of us! It better not rain, I need to get in some practizin with mah shootin arns!!!

"Paul Harvey...Good day"
I miss hearing him at noon! Listened to him for years!!!

Beau,

The news media and government agencies have become a group of idiots led by idiots, thinking they are talking to idiots......NOW THAT IS A STATEMENT I LIKE! Thank you, Beau. This has replaced real professionalism in news like we used to enjoy and depend on. Media people were REMEMBERED because of their good sense, business suits and manners, and way of reporting not their star quality and, may I add, goreous hunk faces! and love your stories on life with your animal entourage, tugs at my heart every time.

I love German food too, german potato salad, reuben sandwiches, saukerkraut and brautknust? Good people, once removed from the evil of war in our history, settled all around out here in Grimes county, brought their recipes, their conservative, God-fearing ways, comman sense values.

Having a wonderful 63rd-2nd day and it's Friday. Thanks, Teddie, Jackie, and all for the BD emails. Life is Good.

Beau if you're looking for sauer kraut in glass jars at Kroger look over in the meat dept. Where they keep the cold cuts, bacon and sausage. They also sell their own brand in good sized plastic bags. Now it's a pretty good trick getting it open without getting sauer kraut juice all over the kitchen counter. But the sauer kraut is pretty good. Goes just fine with knockwurst and spicy mustard.

Since you have an affinity for diners where the waitresses call you hon. Does the name
Florence Jean Castleberry ring a bell? Also have you ever had breakfast at the Avenue Grill on Houston Ave. near the police station and municipal courts? Really good old fashion breakfasts. After indulging you can enjoy a second cup of coffee and listen your arteries slam shut.

If you carry that much weaponry to go check on a gate, how much do you take to go hunting? You may have to trade in your PU for a deuce and a half! It is always a good idea to keep your powder dry.

Beau,
Not wanting to appear uppity and ruin someone else's chance to answer your movie trivia question ingeniously coded with (*'s), I have an idea as to what it might be but I will only hint at it--was it the male lead in a color movie from 1939? However, I have NO idea as to what YOUR clues to this question might be.

A bit of trivia--the only 2 words in English containing all the vowels, IN ORDER, are; Abstemiously and Facetiously (counting "Y" as a vowel when ponounced as an "I".

Does anyone know what is unique about these word combinations?

"Starboard/Larboard" and "Width/Sidth"
DougR

02/19/10 04:31 PM #2266

Richard Meek '65

DougR the only thing I can guess is that they are both a combination of a word in current use and a word that is no longer used. Starboard and width are still in use. Larboard and sidth are not.

Very good Richard, you are right,
But exactly WHY are these obsolete words NOT currently used today in these particular cases??????

Kay,
Heard what you said about moles. I have battled them and pocket gophers here south (or is it north?) of Navasota for years. Then when Beau mentioned hawks in one of his comments it made me think of how many red tailed hawks I have been seeing this year. Diving to the ground from the trees and power lines. And shazaaaam. So far no moles for gophers this year. When I feel sure they are all gone, will shooo the hawks up your way.

Robert, Kay,
Have you tried a fake owl???? You can get them from simple for about 16 to 20 dollars, or real creative that run on batteries, where their heads move and the eyes are red led and light up! They probably have em running off a solar panel!

DougR, I know that the term Larboard was dropped from use because it sounded too much like starboard. This discontinuance happened during the time when ships still used sails. In heavy weather or in a battle it was too hard to distinguish between the two. So the term port was substituted. I'm just guessing that sidth was dropped for basically the same reason. Width and sidth were too similar. So we now use width and length instead of width and sidth.

For those of you discussing Czech & German food. There is a bit in the current AAA magazine about that type of food at Sulaks Cafe in West, TX (which is about 80 mi. so. of Dallas) Supposed to be worth a stop. They have a dessert that sounds like it is enough to get most people to stop. Beau might jump in his truck and head there immediately. They serve a large chocolate chip cookie in the cast iron sillet it was just baked in with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. That's Sulak's in West, TX.

Beau, if you're ever wandering around in west Texas, the area not the town and get close to Ballinger. Stop and have a burger at the Beefmaster. Their lunch buffet is supposed to be really good but when I stopped there a burger sounded great and it was. It was also in Ballinger that I first encountered a Carnegie Library. Apparently the Carnegie Foundation made grants to small towns for libraries to further literacy. It is a very impressive building with Greek columns in this out of the way small town. It is amazing what you sometimes see if you get off the beaten path.

My two older sisters and I begged and pleaded with my Dad to take us to the movies any movie just please please take us. Finally he relented and although Mom warned us that the movies did not meet the Parents Magazine Ok for kids, he tooks us to see a double feature at the garden Oaks Theater. First up "Stalag 17". I guess we really were too young and all three of us were soon begging Dad to take us home. (I have never seen the movie since then, but my brother in law assures me that it is sort of a not that bad and that Hogan's Heroes was based on the movie.) Anyway, we were definitely not laughing and the sisters may have been crying by the end of the show. Now Daddy please can we go home? Nope you wanted to come to the movie we are going to stay and watch the next feature..."Slade" At least it is a western right? As I remember, the first scene, a young boy is rolling a hoop down a deserted dusty main street. In comes the bad guy riding as fast as he can, the boy looks up... and then you see the hoop rolling away on its own.. I think Dad did relent and we went home. I am sure by today's standards I would probably think both movies were tame, but then, sheer trauma.

GENERAL ORDER UNITED STATES NAVY DEPARTMENT,
Washington, February 18, 1846
It having been represented to the Department, that confusion arises from the use of the words "Larboard" and "Starboard," in consequence of the similiarity of sound, the word "Port" is hereafter to be substituted for "Larboard."

I was interested and found this. Hope it helps.

Steve and Richard are both correct concerning the history of starboard/larboard and width/sidth. However, Steve, I was unaware of the existence of the US Navy order from 1846, though I figured some official proclamation must have been given out--but thanks for the info. I wonder when the Brits officially substituted the word "Port"--before or after us? I must google on this point.

The etymology for "Larboard" is based on the same root word akin to the word "Larder" as a repository of supplies and foodstuff--since the "left" or "port" side is the usual side (board) of a ship used for loading supplies.

It seems Spanish has a similar problem with the wording for the directions for "right" (derecho) and "straight ahead" (a la derecha)--this must really cause a few wrecks while driving with the radio blasting in the driver's ear.

Keeping the trivia ball rolling, I am aware of only ONE country's name containing only ONE vowel--what is it? and are there any others?
