My family had a lot of history with Heights Hospital too. I had an emergency appendectomy there when I was 14, my sister Kay had her appendix out there too. Dr. Shoemaker, Stan's dad, was our family doctor and we were neighbors too. I can still remember when he would make house calls if one of us was sick. He was a good doctor and a good man. Unfortunately my dad died at Heights, a blood clot after fairly routine surgery in 1965, at age 59. Probably wasn't one of the hospital's finest hours.

Methinks
Heights Hosp was about the onliest one in the area!!! My dad broke his laig in 52 or 53 methinks, and went to Heights! I went on numerous occasions for an adrenalin shot for my asthma in my youte!!! I know I've mentioned before, that Dr Gould was out family doctor! He saw 4 generations of our family! Good man he! Good Doctor! Great Bedside manner!!! He kept his office visits very low, because he didnt take insurance!
He first started his practice in 51, and an office visit was about 2 dollars, or a bushel of corn or a pullet!!! Last office visit was 35 dollars before he retired! He and my dad were good friends! Dont know why, they didnt have much in common! I think they just amused each other!!!!

The lady at Houghtons Jewelry on 34th and 290 is dating Dr Goulds son the dentist!!!! How I know that, is because she told me! Dont know why though!!! I guess we were trippin down memory lane, talking about Mathis Jewelers and general all round Oak Forest lore!!!

I really like Houghtons Jewelry! Seem to be honest folks, and have relatively good prices!
Hi Theo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! 29 AGAIN????

Hey Robert and Lynn, it might of been Dr Joachim!!!!

Been to heights lately??? Remember the red brick building, with no windows, 1 story, next to the hospital that had grass or weeds growing on top???? It's still there, and still has grass or weeds growing on top! My dad told me what and why, but I forgot!!! Colinas restaurant is at Nicholson and 19th, and they are very good! Z pizza is the best!!! Also Portobello mushrooms on spinach topped with cheese is excellent! Calzones are so big, they would feed a family of 4! Nicholson st is the street where the train tracks ran down norht and south!
You can still get breakfast in the old yale pharmacy!

Too much has changed!!!! And not for the best either!!!

hey beau;its 3 in the morning here;there too if have my time zone correct.but anyway, all you guys out there that were in country may fell a little twinge of TET in the mist.how about those sneeky bastards.had to deal with them too long old friends;burned me completely out.i look in the shadows and search in my nightmares, allways something bad just off to the side there-see it?how could i even be alive?sometimes i wonder;but i guess if i cant even go night-climbing in the mountains in my dreams i have reached the big 'point of deminishing returns'.scotty,i hope you can understand the way i feel, sometimes much too deeply.when my heart gave out,i couldnt go any further;the doctors and nurses have been carrying me along with friends and family.friends and family have kept me alive so many times and found me dying at others.most people live thier lives in a normal way;something im happy for, for them.since december 1965 while at danang,i started dying.some of you vets may wake up in the middle of the night and realize it was something that happened during TET;happy new year for china and vietnam,a wound here where it will always make me nervous.lynn, how many times have you felt the desperation of that time.i hope you have been able to explain to pat when memories come into your mind;i could never explain to mary that i was in emotional pain.i tried one time ,just before we got married so that she would KNOW in advance what she was getting into.i told her that i felt like an 82 year old man.i was physically and emotionally exhausted;i told her that i personaly had to maintain low depression to maintain my sanity.i had to be be stoic about the experiences in vietnam ; nothing could ever shake as much as that did DIDI-MAU;DIDIMAU---MOVE ON-MOVEON-so many times ive tried to just 'move on' but ive looked back and like LOT'S wife;was turned into a pillar of salt.mary couldnt understand why i would take off at midnight and walk down 43d to t.c.jester just down the street to walk along whiteoak bayou on a full moon.she didnt realize that this the way i had lived the last two years and the moonlight reveiled beauty on the bayou,as rivers and paddies of rice in vietnam did;where your night vision is your life, literally.this is where i went to think;solitude that i must have to sort things out.i tryed to catch up,i just couldnt handle what i had experienced and later what i would see every time i watched t.v.or read the news.saw my old unit 'charley'1/9 get completly cut up by northvietnamese heavy machine guns;even shooting the wounded marines who were stacked up on tanks trying to get out of the ambush.i know what am ambush was from my time in 'c'1/9;this one was killing my friends.i had to sit there in my mother's home and couldnt do anything about it.i was disturbed for a few days, that turned into a few years.my last contact with the vietnamese was on a good note.i had friends that voted me an "honorary govener" of thier provence on the cambodian border.i miss my vietnamese friends and thier families but cant bring myself to look them up when i come to houston.too many years go by and you forget.7 years of my life that was someone elses-like forest gump.SE LE GUERE

I love the Heights stories, especially being switched at birth. Beau, I can hardly wait for your book to come out, it is definitely on my Christmas list for books to give to bring out smiles on my relative's faces. Dr. Joachim was my kids pediatrician. He was great, so friendly and very thorough. I first heard of him when he was Janne's little brother, Judd's doctor. I had never heard of a doctor just for kids until then and remember how strange I thought it was. Teddy you sparked my memory of home visits by doctors. Dr. Mc lived on my street, Cheshire, for awhile, but even after he moved he would come too. In fact, he diagnosed my polio when I was 5 and I was quickly sent to a hospital for valuable treatment in the early stages. The hospital was only for polio victims and my memories of that hospital and the things I observed haunted me for years, mostly the mirrored faces reflecting from the huge iron lungs. The only way I was able to match the faces to the heads was by the mirrors affixed on the top of the tank-like structure. The machine made an unnatural noise when breathing for its occupant. It seemed like everywhere you looked their was abnormality of the limbs, including myself. Mine, fortunately, was tremendous weakness that could be mostly overcome with time and therapy, but the visions and interpretations from childhood to adult were assaulting to the mind, nonetheless.

I'm off to see my Mom and will look for the red building with the grass growing on the roof!

Another memory of Heights Hospital, was a vacant lot between it and 18th St., where old men would gather at a big table under the trees and play dominoes and forty-two all day and into the night. They were really old, like probably in their 50's and 60's!

Did ya catch that big ol’ full moon rising in the Eastern sky last night around 8pm CST? (maybe even seen from Germany about 7 hours earlier). If not, you should have Tivo’ed it because it was great.

There is something about a full moon peaking over a barrier island and viewed from across a Texas gulf coast bay that is hard to beat. In my book it rivals Del Coronado sunsets, Rocky mountain air, Cajun cooking, good friends/rum/music, cute puppies, etc.

Full moons use to make me do crazy things but since I quit drinkin’ Jose Cuervo Gold, not so much anymore.

Scotty there is an awesome deli, Carter and Cooley, across the street from Select Care/Heights Hospital. It used to be a drug store. Was that Dugan's? For those of you who haven't eaten there, Carter and Cooley has some great food. Their BL&T may be the best in town. My uncle, who grew up in Garden Oaks, has to go get one when he visits from Ft. Worth.

A few of years ago I got to go to a birthday party on 19th St. That was put on for Huey Long to celebrate his 102nd.birthday. He was one of the Ink Spots. He played some of their hits at his party. Pretty amazing that he was still playing and singing at 102. Unfortunately he passed away last year. There's always interesting things going on in the Heights.

This has been a good year for roasting marshmallows in the Heights!

Jennie Anderson '65 (Dylan)

I'm planning on lunch today at Carter and Cooley's eating a BLT! I drove by the old Kaplan's and felt such frustration that this enormous building of condos covered the entire lot! I always felt like that corner was part of our childhood's, never to go away. Mr. Winstead, our crossing guard at Oak Forest lived across the street from Kaplan's. He was such a sweetheart of a man.

Linda Webster '65 (Jennings)

The Heights to me has always meant Kaplan's-Ben Hur. I remember as a child going there with my grandmother, and always just signing a ticket for a purchase. All of my clothes didn't come from Kaplan's but if my aunt made them the fabric came from there. Since my grandmother didn't drive, one of us took her always to Kaplan's which is where she bought all her Christmas gifts. I remember on Christmas Eve her entire living room was filled with packages wrapped & purchased at Kaplan's so many that we had to enter from the side door many times. I was crushed when I found out that Kaplan's was closing.
I remember taking her also to what was then Reagan State Bank and that she would not let me give the deposit to the teller, she had to go inside everytime. Many fond memories of the Heights.

I also spent a lot of time in Kaplans as a kid while my mother went throught the pattern books and bought fabric. It wasn't much fun for a boy, torturous. Until I could get over to the toy section, much better. As an adult it was a great place to buy wedding and Christmas gifts. i could walk in, get a quality gift, have it gift wrapped and be out of there in thirty minutes. I got to know Martin Kaplan before he sold the property. It was unfortunate that none of the following generation had any interest in the business. A real neighborhood treasure, sorry it is gone.

Does anyone else remember Mr. Hall the custodian at Stevens Elementary? He was a nice man. I think he lived on 34th. He drove a blue Plymouth (I think) forever.

If you're interested in good restaurants in the Heights there are several on 19th. Shade is very good. I also like Thai Spice and Collina's. They have good food but they're also BYOB. Bringing your own choice wine is great!

Hey Robert Derrick,

See you are from Navasota, do you enjoy living there? Did you marry someone from there? Bet we have crossed paths so many times and not known it.

Back to Heights Hosp. - my doc. was Dr. Lucas, I candy - striped (volunteered) there as well. Sometimes, I think, as it hints we all do, that if we could go back "in time" and visit for a short while, and memory treat, we would; so that we could wallow in all of our young memories, and enjoy the feelings we felt at that age. I enjoyed the outdoors the most, walking under the huge old trees, and cracked sidewalks, curbs, the smell of rotting leaves (humas) complete with flickering shadows of sunlight and breeze hitting my face, so pleasant to just blend in the moment with nature. No stress, no fears, no obligations, just pleasure in the moment. I have always wanted to live on a street where the neighbors faced each other and everyone was on their family porches enjoying the early evening, listening to the sounds of cars passing, people chatting, children playing...where you really knew the habits of your neighbors and you shared your lives in the comman block you lived on.

Kay, that sounds like a great beginning to a novel. Linda, I too, remember all those beautifully wrapped Christmas presents from Kaplan's. Who has packages like that anymore? Yes, my Mother just signed her name on a piece of paper and we got to take it home. If we were good and let my Mother try on clothes or shoes w/o bothering her we could select something from the toy department to buy. What a toy department that was! It had everything I ever wanted as a kid. When I got married I received so many wonderfully wrapped gifts from there, china, bed linens, towels......I especially loved that time of my life, even though I didn't know one thing about cooking, I did love my kitchen things!

About not knowing how to cook, one of the first meals I served my husband was stuffed flounder, but I didn't scale it. There were many more, but that was the one I most remember. I've never cooked a flounder since, but I sure like to eat them! Stuffed that is!

Thanks, Jenny, it was a pleasant memory...although I defer to the Beau-man on the book writing. Beau must be out on one big patrol, and letting us ramble on in his absence. I'm sure that he is not happy with the rainy, nasty weather we've had to endure, any more than I. Just re-read Beau's bio, and got some chuckles.

Burg, sure wish it was a reasonably safe world again.

I've sure enjoyed all of your comments.

When I lived in Houston, I used to make regular trips to the different neighborhoods of my choice to participate in old memories and see how the old places were doing. Hardy Toll Road (anyone know of future plans for the Toll Road?, Yale, Heights, Brookside cemetary, Oak Forest, Timbergrove, my old married homes, near Airline, and last in FM1960. Difficult to get back now that I'm living out of town (70 mi. 1 way trip to Fudds)

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT A TREAT TO READ ALL THE ENTRIES FROM EVERYONE!!!!!!
MADE ME FEEL ALL BETTER!!!! Been under the weather!! Boo!
Bad cold! You know the drill, stuffy knose, achy bones, fever, at least 8 of the seven dwarfs, achey, stinky, dopey, docky, grumpy, donder, blitzen, winken, blinken, and nod!!!! Man, if I felt any worse, I'd be dead!!!! it would kill an ordinary man!!!! Plus, I am almost totally deaf, except for the ringing in my ears, or head! They say it isnt the ear, that it is a nerve in the brain that causes "ringing in the ear"!!! WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THAT DAMN PHONE??????

I have eaten at Carters and Cooleys, and Richard is correct, most excellent! There was a Tea Room, behind and across the street from Harolds. Cant remember the name, but they moved to spring branch! Never did any good there! I think they shut down!!!!

Like everyone that shopped there, I miss Kaplans! I too got to know mr Kaplan! He and I would sample the coffee that they were showcasing! He was such a very good man!
I shopped there for christmas from the time I rediscovered it 15 years or more ago, till the day they closed!!!! Made me sad!!!!
Hickory Hollow is a good place to eat! It is on the corner of Heights Blvd and Center street, just south of the rail line! Very good food!!!!!

Hey, "Howlin wolf" wtl, we didnt get to see the moon, cause of cloud cover!!!! I didnt think Al Gahore had electrons, just hanging chad!!!! A few plants wilted and almost destroyed when I breathed on them when I was a drinker!!! I quit drinking 35 years ago, well, hard drinking, I woke up one morning and the car was in the driveway sideways, and I was asleep in a pillow case in the corner of the living room!!! And I didnt remember what, when, where, or how, or why!!! So rat then and there, I got religion, saw the light, had an epiphany, etc!!!!

The good Lord been good to me, keeping me alive this long! Probably for his amusement! Which is fine with me!
Been truly blessed!!! Well, been hoggin the forum long enough! Sure am gladd all you good folks got on! Be back later! Hey Burge, how you pups???? There is a sharpei in our neighborhood. When me and coop are out on patrol, he looks around the corner of his house with that square muzzel and just watches us! What a beautiful and inquisitive and intelligent face he has!!!! Everynow and then, he barks, and Coop gives him one back, but only one!!! Heck, with that hoss, one's enough!!!!

Been moving furniture around the house for a couple of weeeks. It's kind of funny, so Tell you about it later though, I'm plumb tuckered out now!!! Gonna lay down with the critters!!!! Probably rise up with fleas, eh!!!

Beau, while you've been in the Land of Nod some of us have been slaving in the free enterprise system. Glad you are moving around enough to not be mistaken as dead. You've got to get well since Fudd Tuesday is coming up

I'll have to try the Hickory Hollow haven't been there in a while. My neighborhood favorite for bar-b-que is still the Bar-B-Que Inn at Crosstimbers and Yale. They really do a great job on fried shrimp and catfish too.

Burge, years ago when I took my dog to obedience class a lady brought her Sharpei and that was the hardest headed dog I think I've ever seen. Is that a breed characteristic or was that just Honan? For those of you who might remember her, Honan belonged to Suzanne Debien who lived in Garden Oaks also.

I better get back to economic endeavors. I hope everyone has a great evening. The Rockets are on TV tonight. Better yet if your favorite college or high school team is playing get out of your chair and go watch them. If you don't have a favorite team you can go with me to HBU.
The Huskies will be back in town on the 15th vs. North Texas. Take care.

ill post a couple of pics that i took of my shar-pei family today.these are not obediant dogs by any streach of the imagination.they are independant and some say they are aloof;aloof is only a first impression.if you can imagine a dog being polite, then that is tug-boat,the young male with all the wrinkles.he is stoic and a very polite little guy who waits by me when we all take a walk.whereas ping is all out there;checking out everything around, her snoot high in air working, hunting; the spot- on recon for her master.ping is as sensitive as a kitten and as quick.sometime i refer to them as my
cat-dogs; as the cat sometimes and then they turn right around and make moves like a quarterhorse;when they play i just watch and enjoy;they really know how to put on a show.obediant?not in a strict sense;as i can call them sometimes and they are right there or they might be busy, playing with the dogs down the street or watching my neighbors'houses both north and south.they sit in pairs, one facing one way and the other ,the oppisite way.they are natural guard dogs and were bred at least 2500 yrs as service and farm dogs.they guarded the tombs and temple along with the chow and the pekingnese.bred for intelligence and temperment, thats debox, you can tell by his demeanor that this is "the little golden lion"as they were known as in china.with the shielded eyes, this boy projects confidence and dignity.boy(pong debox)is a funny guy;he is quiet, sensitive and extreamly strong.his temperment is as good as they get, loves people but you have to give him time to square you out in his world.he comes out of the house rumbling and woofing saying"hey you,im pong debox, this is my master's house;whats your reason to be here, stay there and ill tell my master someone is here to see him.or do i know you?ive seen you over here before, you are all right-go on in.he is a real gentleman at heart.his son tug-boat is going to be a little bigger than boy.tug-boat has a gentle temperment and is special;he is a champion in form and a coat that will be too curly for the standard but fine with tight little curls in his coat and a fine mane oround his neck.his little sister panda is a hoot.smarter and more inquisitive than any of them.she is the runt but was the first to grab the world.when ping's litter first opened thier eyes, she was the first one to go exploring.sweet little face and full of the devil.they sound like kids dont they?truely, sending a shar-pei to obediance school is sorta like sending eric clapton or jimi hendrex to music school.thier breed begs you to understand them.they are not for everybody.one could say that they are esoteric.one must give time and patience to this breed.
my dogs help cheer me up,you can see a cloud over some of my writing lately and though im feeling better, these little animals have been a service;they make me laugh.

Hey Burge,
Obedience???? Coop must be part sharpei!!! that ol boy is just dumber n a sack of rocks!!! Either that, or he is playing me for all he's worth!!!! The sharpei in the hood, looks just like you said, aloof, inquisitive, all knowing and intelligent! He looked at me like einstein would look at me trying to figure out his theory of relativity on his blackboard! I just love looking at these guys! But, good ol coop, that boys' light is on, but nobodys home! I'm not being mean, just factual!
You can put a treat close to him, and if he cant reach it with his big ol snout, he wont budge to get it!!! I have to put it close to his mouth! Maybe thats his plan!!! Boy, does he have it good!!!! But I love him, as I do all my critters!!!!

Does anyone out there like moving things around in their homes???? I dont mean the actual physical ACT of moving things, just the end result???? Well, thats me! I cant stand to leave well enough alone, especially when I am not happy with how a room is arranged! My beloved knows this, and is ever mindful and fretful of my obsessive compulsiveness!!! I try to make it as unnerving for her as possible! I get my big "Fat Max" measuring tape out and set it on the bar, where she cant miss it!!!!

She now knows what the tape means! "I'M GONNA MOVE A ROOM AROUND"!!!! She just doesnt know which one, or when!!! I have moved rooms around at night while she is asleep, careful not to make any noise and wake her!
She has gotten up and walked through a completely rearranged den, that only hours earlier, was not arranged this way!!!

She just groans and stumbles to the coffee pot, and gets her "teacher look" on!!! She just shakes her head, and has a sip of coffee and goes on about her bidness!!!
Sometimes I have put the room back the way it was, while she was at work! When she got home, she just shakes her head and moans!!!! I dont do it for meanness to her, but because my mind is rearranging it, and i have to satisfy my mind!!!!

Last week, I swapped the kids room with the office!
Now, that took two days! But it is sooooo much better! Even my beloved and beloved haley loves it!!!!! GOOD!!!

Yesterday, I put the tape on the counter, and DW just groans and says, "what in heavens name you gonna move now"????
I told her I was just thinking about stuff!!!! So after she left this morn, I sprang into action! Well, maybe sprang is a bit much, but I did hurry as much as a crippled up old man can!!!!

I have hated our bedroom for...ever!!!! Even after we got new furniture for it, a king sleigh bed and triple dresser and side tables etc!!!
I had originally set it up according to the "fang shooie" book, and it still didnt feel right! Felt more like "krap Fooie"!!! I cant remember when I have gotten a good nights sleep in there!!!!

Well, I set about the task of moving the lead filled furniture! GooD GOD, that stuff is heavy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I prevailed, and moved it all by myself!!!! A side note here, all homes, should come with "Stepford Handymen" in a closet, so all you have to do is say, "oh HAL, would you move the furniture around for me"! But, I guess thats why the wives have us, huh!!!!! WHO DO WE HAVE????? Just our ownselves!!!!

Finally got er all moved, 4 hours later!!!! The room feels much better now! In fact all the cats got on the bed and conked out!!!! They all helped though! Cats are inquisitive by nature, and love to see what you are doing! They "furniture surf" !!!!! Two are three of them will jump on whatever you are moving, and ride it all the way to it's new destination, like you need all that extra weight! They dont care where you take it, they are gonna surf!!!! Then when you get to your destination, they ALL have to inspect it!!!!

Well, DW likes the "new" bedroom! "The room looks so much bigger now" is what she said!!! I'm running out of rooms to rearrange! Not gonna do the game room, the pooltable is in the middle of the room, and it weighs in at a cool 1000 pounds! Even I, am not that ambitious!!!!
Or is it crazy????

Many years ago, I swapped the dinning room and the living room around! I liked that, but made the dining room a sitting room/library instead of a living room!
Works great too!!!
Back in me youte, I made the living room the bedroom, and the bedroom, the living room! Of course that was in me youte, and single days! Hell, back then all my furniture was concrete blocks and boards, and beanbag chairs, and one single bed! all pretty easy to move!!!!

Remember the concrete block and board entertainment centers we use to make???? Shoot, you could do so much with some concrete blocks and boards! Almost like an erector set, or tinker toys, eh!!!!
Even painted the blocks and boards too!!!!

OK, it's official, I am officially old!!! I watched the Lawrence Welk show for the first time this past Saturday! It was cool too, in Black and white! ONe of the early ones for sure!!!! "thank you boys"!!!!!

Speaking of dogs, John Boy, (jack) has a couple of squeeky rubber chickens, and he loves em!!! Well, everynight, before he goes to bed, he puts one of them in my boots!
Then, in the morning, before I put them on, he sticks his head in the bedroom to watch me!!!! So, I play along and stick my foot in my boot, and the chicken squeeks, and john boy has the most delighted look on his face!!!
So, I pull the chicken out, and he takes it very gently and struts out of the bedroom! I call him John Boy, because they called John Kennedy "Jack"! Anyone know why they call someone named John, Jack????? I figure I'm allowed!!!

Anyone want a cat???? There is a little simonize cat hanging around outside! I feed him, but I am not going to adopt another critter!!!! He is a sweet little guy, probably a yearling! Young and small, and white feet! I believe he is a chocolate point simonize!!!! Big Blue eyes, and a talker!!! Soon as he lets me pick him up, I am going to take him to the vet and have him neuterized, and then turn him loose!!! Just cant have another indoor critter!!!!!!

Guess I better shut er down for now! I heard the news idjits say that people that get on the internet are depressed!!! Hell, I was depressed before I got on this furshlerginer thing!!! I was depressed because it's cold, depressed because it's overcast, and depressed because it's suppose to rain for two days, depressed, because I cant get my fruit trees and pecan trees planted at the ranch! shoulda already had em in the ground!!!! Depressed because of the news!!!! I was actually looking forward to getting on the computer and chattin with youse youtes! But the idjits on the news says I am depressed! Actually I'm just stopped up and my motor is running wide open!!!

My glasses werent at the computer, so I got up to get them, only I forgot what I got up for! So I sat back down, and then when I couldnt see the damn computer, I remembered why I got up, to get my glasses!!! Well, I did that routine three times before I got my glasses!!! Lawdy mis clawdy!!!!! Anyone else out there having trouble with their short term memory????? Say you are!!!! Please!!!!

All the critters are down for the count tonight, so guess I'll head to the sleep chamber! Coop is stretched out on the couch, snoring and Jack is in the loveseat/chair all catywaumpus, and every other chair and footstool has a cat on it! My lover kitty Lacy, is warming my side of the bed for me!!!!
Good night John Boy: Goodnight grandpa; Goodnight mary ellen....

You and Ferrell have furniture moving in common!

The grand children always run in and say "You moved the furniture again????"

Lately, they have been pointing out the eccentricities of our speech. Seems that its funny if we say "Mash the button." or "Push the button" Now I guess we should say "touch" or "rollover"

If I say "Tump the water out of the wagon" they don't know what I mean. Squash is a noun, a vegetable to them. I like it as a verb as in "Squash that bug." Oh well, the generation gap grows.

Remember Bill Cosby's "Little black hairs" routine. He is looking in the mirror and noticing all the elder changes on his face. Seems like every time I look there are a lot less hair and a lot more wrinkles flaps and folds. I hope I never have to lose my teeth. I think that I would look like one of those Leonardo sketches of the old men, with a hook chin and flabby jowls.
