Richard,

You would really like the book "Lanterns on the Levee" by William Percy. It is essays of a planter's son. Fabulous.

Enjoyed the reading.

Thanks as always.

Paige, I'll give that book a try. Beau, you were close but there may be a connection. Maybe the gov'ment gave the Indians those shoddy war surplus blankets?

Another couple of bits of trivia from the Colonial era that I picked up when I took a tour of Old Towne Annapolis. If you're ever there I would recommend it highly. The docents are dressed in period costumes and it's a walking tour that is very enjoyable. I'm sure you've noticed how in portraits of that era men would stand with one leg turned partially outward, showing off their calf muscle since they wore knee britches. The ladies of the time found this to be exciting. That is where the term putting your best foot forward originated. Another tidbit is the ladies use of fans. We're all familiar with ladies flirting with the gents while looking over the top of a fan. There was also a couple of practical applications of the fan. In the summer for a cooling effect and in the winter as a shield from the heat of the fire places. Both of these seasonal benefits had to do with comfort. Also they had to do with beauty. The ladies make up of the day was wax based. Keeping their faces cool was very important to keep their make up from literally melting off their faces. What a social disaster that would have been!

Anybody thinking about going to the NHRA drags at Baytown this weekend?

It should be a fast track and good weather if you like the smell of nitro and burning rubber.

If so, gimme a call/note.

Beau Wann, Jr.

greetings from oak forest
Hey Wayne, I would like to go, but cannot! I havent been to the new drag strip yet! Still remember the Gay Pontiac strip down in dickinson!!! We were allowed to sit on a telephone pole that was laying on the ground just inches from the dragsters and all! The noise aqnd pressure created by those blown bad boys, would just almost crush you!!! Have fun!!! Is the Force family gonna be there???

I am upstairs on the little womans computer! Mine has the pig flu! I hope I catch one of those &$&#^%@&$ that send out viruses!!! If I had the kind of knowledge it took to construct a virus, well, just imagine what good you could do instead of harm!!!
It came in on a picture I copied to my gallery! It was from someone I know, but I'm not sure who! If anyone here sent me pictures of a glock with the enscription of "smile, wait for flash" then you got the virus too!
The virus destroyed a lot of my pictures, I sure hope it didnt get into my music!!!

I will open no more attachments!!!

Did you all get your new recycle bin???? I was so anxious to get it, and so excited when we got it!!! Whats wrong with me??? Now, I have a problem with just tossing all the items together instead of separating them! But my darling bride says it's ok!!!

I enrolled my buddy Cooper in an obedience class, hopine to advance to therapy dog status!!! He met with the trainer today, and she started in with the "come" command! Good ol coop, true to hisownself, just sat down and grinned and put up his right paw for someone to shake!
The trainer then pulled out some treats, but ol coop held his ground! He wasnt about to let her get the upper hand!!! "Cooper, COME" she said!!! "yeah right" I said!!!
Coop just sat more determined not to move, and for someone to shake his paw. Well, the first meeting and lesson went just as I figured! Coop is only gonna do what coop wants to do! The trainer walks over to him and gives him a treat, and he wouldnt take it, because she had too many fingers on it! He doesnt want to touch your fingers when he takes a treat! I told her this, so she just barely held it and good ol coop stood up and took it!

So she walks back to her spot, and now, I'm sitting down in a chair next to coop, cause this is gonna take a while! "Cooper COME" she dommands! Coop looks at her like he just showed up here on earth, so he sits down and grins and puts his paw up for someone to give him five!!! Well, this went on the whole hour! Kinda taxed the trainer a bit! I wonder if I'll get a refund???
Well, we got 8 more sessions, we will see what we will see!!!
Methinks I should have started with John Boy!!! Ol coop is the "R" word methinks!!!

I am having a hard time typing, becauswe I have been practising on the guitar, and the strings make the fingers on the left hand, if youre right handed, callused and hard and numb! Still dont know which songs I will do
! I dont do any of them very well anymore, so I guess I will be on the "talentless" part of the show! The person in charge says she has 8 folks now, and me! I said, You still just have 8!!!

Ive asked my7 beloved which ones she likes, and cant get a commitment! I could do wihat I do best, moan and groan and limp! I hope you all appreciate my sacrifice tonight on this entry, cause I had to climb the stairs and now gotta go back down! MOAN GROAN LIMP!!!!

Be glad when my computer gets fixed, or I hope it can be fixed!!!
Looks like the wind is kicking up out there! White caps on the cement pond! Been on a few patrols since last we chatted! Saw the two wood duck mates today! I get attached to things, and then I worry about them! Ol dopey me!!! Saw some dopey ducks, one owas on my house, and the others were on a big tree and power lines! Ok, now you know, they have web duck feet and not claws, right??? The ones on the power lines were rocking back and forth trying to keep their balance! craziest think Ive seen in a while!

Cole crick getting kind o stagnant, hope we get that rain they been pronising us! Hey, did you folks know that the bluebonnet festival is this weekend in chapel hill??? Me and the little woman thinking about riding pegasus up there on Sunday! Playing hooky from church!
Gonna be a beautiful day! Supposed to be 300 vendors up there! If you take a motorcycle to things like that, then you are limited to your purchases, thank goodness!!!
Caint get no shifarobe on a motorcycle!

Guess I'll go practise on my guitar, and limber up my vocal chords, like thats gonna do any good! Sure wish I hadnt agreed to this, I'm gonna be just terrible!!!
Even the cats have been predicting I'm gonna stink, cause everyone of them have barfed on my sheet music! Glad Cooper didnt, cause he harks up a bushel basket full o stuff! Now thats just yuky, sorry I mentioned it!!!
See ya
Ol coop is barking??????
gotta go

Hey Richard,

Bet that was neat, attending Beau's church. Small churches are so unique, and familish! The big overblown ones (excuse me if I trample on anyone's toes here) are too commercial and play-acting, or theatrical, I should say. We may have to go to listen to Beau perform.......

Hey Beau,

Sounds like a beautiful weekend coming up! The bluebonnets are fantastic, and the food will be good. I know all you guys are in agreement with Beau, that much can't be hauled on a motorcycle. Boo!

In our end, we will have the Circle 7 Ranch participating in a trailride, with wagons and all. The weather looks great for riding. So looks as though bikers and horses will be out and about. I have barn cleaning and mowing to do, but I probably can get some grandson recruits. There are a lot of regular guys eager to haul away anything metal out here, as it is paying high price for metal junk, and believe me, I had a lot in and around the barn. I was happy to get rid of it and they were happy to get it. They might of made couple hundred off me.

Kay, I usually go to a large church, First Presbyterian across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts. Don't worry about trampling on toes because you're not. I generally feel the same way you do. I started going there when my mom was an elder at Oaks Presbyterian. Every time I missed church or some event at OP I'd get a call "Richard, I missed ou at church today". So it saved a lot of aggravation to transfer my membership. Anyway the point of this long dissertation is that I was surprised at what a warm welcoming church it is. They really practice what they preach with outreach programs to the community and other programs. Anyway I've got a great option of going to First or Oaks.
I think going to listen to Beau and the magnificent seven would be an excellent idea! Beau, what is the concert date, time and location?
Is your trail ride like the ones that come to the Houston Rodeo or just a one day ride?

Beau, I enjoyed your description of Coop's first day at school or Teacher's first day with Coop. Have you thought about the old saying that dogs take after their owners? You need to take a closer look at your duck friends feet. They do have claws. I can verify that from personal experience. One day several years ago my wife (at the time) and I were enjoying a picnic beside the pond at Mesina Hof Winery. This big old Merganser drake comes mosing over and wants to participate in the picnic. After I ignored him for a while he quacked at me a few times. I politely told him no duck food today. He quacked a couple of more times. I continued to ignore him. we were sitting at picnic table enjoying wine, cheese, fruit and French bread and this duck just hops up on my leg and sinks in his claws to steady himself. His claws went right through my pants and into my leg. That duck doesn't know how close he came to being made into pate'. Anyway, ducks do have claws on their webbed feet.

Nope me thinks the official Houston rodeo is over. This is a private annual trailride, we all just expect it on the roads. They are also a kinda wild bunch, I'm told.

Richard Meek '65

Yep the Houston Rodeo is over. I just wondered if your trail ride would be as long as some of those trail rides are? Wild bunch , huh? Well just make sure all the firearms are unloaded before anybody starts enjoying the firewater. It'd be a shame for some fool to shoot themselves in the foot.

Has anyone else received a SECOND census form like me?

As prescibed by the US constitution, I duly filled out and mailed in my FIRST form a couple of days after receiving it sometime in the middle of March.

In order to better ensure proper and timely receipt of my census form, I even went to the post office and dropped it off at the inside mail slot.

Well, lo and behold, much to my bewilderment I received the above mentioned SECOND census form several days later on March 31st!!!

The enclosed explanation for this second mailing stated that only ONE RESPONSE WAS NEEDED and there was NO NEED to fill out and send THIS SECOND form in, that is if you had already sent in the FIRST form--which I had done?????

But, being the curious beast that I am, I decided anyway to call the toll-free number provided for any possible questions regarding this matter just to hear the guv'ment's explanation for such a waste.

After drifting through several query options, my particular problem was addressed with this CONTRADICTORY answer--the recorded message said that RE-MAILOUTS of a SECOND form automatically occurres if the FIRST form has NOT BEEN RECEIVED BY APRIL 9th!!!!!!! (Remember, folks, I received this second form on March 31st--10 days BEFORE their own April 9th cutoff-?????). The message went on to say that the FIRST form was probably "lost" in the mail (which is, unfortunately, totally believable) and that I should go ahead and resubmit and mail in this SECOND form and that I would not be counted twice????????

What happened to the original notice about NOT having to resubmit this SECOND form if the FIRST one had already been sent?????

What a waste of money by our "efficient" guv'ment. This is totally crazy. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Hopefully, my census form went through OK seemed to be rather benign after hearing how detailed it was supposed to be. I guess I got the short form. I also got my taxes finished and mailed prior to the 4/15 deadline. I will have to say that the IRS seems to be very efficient at finding all my mistakes. Usually a couple of years after the fact, they let me know how I erred. Fortunately for me, it is usually in their favor so they send me a little check.

Hot Rods filled the Austin streets this weekend.

Does it seem to anyone else that things are bassakwards in relation to the census and taxes? The major point of all the adds I see on television and print, is be sure and be counted so your community gets its share of federal revenue. Doesn't seem hard to figure out why we have overspending. We have to send our money to Washington in the form of taxes. They then spend billions on advertising and"administering" it. Then they parcel it back out to the people that sent it in minus the expenses. Now does that seem crazy or it is just me? Some other items that seem out of whack. Such as about one third of the working people in our country work for some government entity, a Dept. of Education that doesn't operate any schools or set any curriculum, a Dept. of Agriculture that has more employees than there are farmers, a Dept of Energy that has over 100,000 employees, been in existence over 30 years and still hasn't developed a national energy policy. What are your thoughts? This is all national. I haven't even mentioned the folks at the state and local level.I'll see some of you at Fudd's tonight if the good Lord is willing and the crick don't rise.Shouldn't be a problem and Beau and Coop probably have the ducks and coots under control. So plan on driving over to Fudd's and enjoying some good fellowship and food.

Kay does anyone in your local trail ride ride a mule? For some reason I thought about Festus on Gun Smoke riding one. That might be pretty cool. Particulary a white mule. I've read that it is hard to get a cinch tight enough on a mule because they're more round around the middle than a horse. Anyone know if that is correct? Beau, have you made any progress getting yor neighbor mule to talk?

04/13/10 11:38 AM #2471

Kay Watters '65 (Greene)

Hey Richard,

Not sure about the mule question. Do know that horses can blow their middles up to avoid being cinched too tightly, so you have to watch for that or your saddle will fall off. There were a few stupids that had to be tazered this weekend, physically restrained, etc. and I'm sure some landed in the local jail. But it was truly a beautiful weekend.

Teddie Jordan

Just want to say how much Fran and I enjoyed seeing everyone at Fudd's last night. Many laughs and many great memories stirred from the conversations and stories. If I had died in my sleep last night it would have taken the undertaker a week to get the big smile off my face. It occured to me driving home just how lucky we all are to have the chance to commune with others we share so much history with. Even something about hearing various people's health issues that makes us realize we are not alone in this aging process. Everyone take care and for those of you who didn't make it you were misssed and we hope to see you next month, Good Lord willing!

PS- And Jackie I just saw that this is page 100 of the Message Forum. Congratulations to you and thank you again for starting this great website.

!!! AN ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITY !!!

Good morning, Buenas Dias, Guten morgen, Bon jour my fellow Waltripians. This Sunday, April 18th, at 4:00 you have a VERY rare opportunity. Oaks Presbyterian Church is having a talent show. The headliner will be none other than Beau Wann, Jr. Beau will be playing and singing along with eight other performers. The show should last about and hour and a half. There is no admission charge
( or preaching) and all comers are welcome. The event will be in Fellowship Hall. Oaks is located at 1576 Chantilly, across the street from Black Middle School (Black Jr. Hi. for all you oldtimers). Come out and have a good time. You'll proably see some people you haven't seen in a long time (for the most part, that's a good thing).

For those of you have been wondering why we haven't been hearing from Mr. Wann (he lets me call him that because we're such good friends),his computer has been on the blink. He assured me last night at Fudd's that he will have a new one hooked up anytime now. So you will be able to read Beau's wannderings again (always a treat).

Don't forget, OPC, 4:00, Sunday!See you there!

Keep on dancing,
Rich

HELLO BOYS - I'M BAAAAAAACK!!!
Well hells bells, got ol R2D2 up and runnin after a brain transplant! Coulda used one of those myownself, a few years back!!! But alas and alack, gotta play with the hand I was dealt!!! this will be short, cause me and Coop gotta go to class! Last week didnt count, just a chance for the instructor to see what she got herself into!!!

Been tutoring ol coop, using cliff notes, on "How to be a dog"! and "How to be Cooper-ative"! Dont think he cares much though, has his eyes shut and snoring!!! "Stay, stay, Good Boy" !!! See, he is smart, asleep, but smart!!!

Guess I better sign off for now, got to get prepared for Koops kindergarten klass!!! If nothing else, it should be interesting! The instructor called and was preping me on what I should bring, hotdogs, leash, collar, shot records, and any toy coop might be partial to! "You want me to bring the couch" I asked??? "Cause THAT IS his favorite toy"!!!

She also said the class would be small, just one other small dog would be enrolled! "Great" I said, "a snack for coop. He should like that. What kinda small dog is it, a poodle"???? Just got chuckles from her, but she doesnt realize just who, or what she is dealing with!!!
Oh well, we will see what we will see!!!

I will log back in later tonight and up date the dog lovers in the group! And judging from all that I have talked to, most all of us are dog or critter lovers!!!

Soooooooo enjoyed Fudds last night! I was not going to go, cause I rode pegasus all day, and was hurting, but my lovely bride talked me into going! So glad I did! If you havent been, great conversation and great comp;any as Teddy said!

I would say, that Jackie has certainly secured her place in heaven, cause she has truly made a difference in this whirld with the Waltrip 64 website! Cant thank her enough for what she has done for us!!!

Hasty lumbago
yore friend and sweet tater
BooWang
PS; Thats what the r2d2 people called me when they said my r2d2 was ready!!! Been called many things, but never BooWang!!! oh well, been called worser

04/14/10 04:51 PM #2476

Richard Meek '65

Beau, I'm generating some interest in your return to the stage this Sunday. A potential attendee on the '65 website wants to know if they can count on a Debbie Boone medley? What say you BooWang?

Congrats on page 100!!!! Way to go group! Keep the stories and memories going!

And yes, we had a great time last night, I'm with you Teddie, I'm still smiling. Just such a wonderful, warm and fun bunch. Missed those that didn't come, but mark your calendars for May 11 and be there.

Posted most of the Fudd pictures, but will have to add a few more and finish ID's later.

Have a good evening.
Hugs,
J
