JESSE S. MARTIN
 
JESSE S. MARTIN, 86, of Stafford, TX passed away in the afternoon of September 21, 2010.He was born on January 7, 1924 in Sheldon, TX. Jesse graduated from Milby High School in May of 1942. He served in the military from 1943 to 1946. He married Mary Sue High on July 3, 1948, who would be his wife for 55 years before her passing in December, 2003.
 
Jesse attended the University of Houston on a basketball scholarship and the G.I. Bill, and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor's of Science and a Master's of Education.
 
Jesse's first coaching job was at Johnston Jr. High from 1950-1953, where he coached football and track. From there he went to San Jacinto High School in 1954 to coach basketball, golf, and J.V. football. During the summer months he would lifeguard, teach swimming lessons, and conduct a youth program at Lakeside Country Club.
 
From 1960-1968, Jesse coached football, golf, and varsity basketball at Waltrip High School, winning the city championship in basketball in 1966 and 1967.
 
From 1968-1969, he served as elementary P.E. supervisor for HISD before becoming principal of Cooley Elementary School.  He stayed at Cooley until 1974 when he transferred to Neff Elementary as their new principal until his retirement in 1987. Working with the students and teachers at the elementary level provided great joy for him. He missed everyone very much and spoke highly of his staff following retirement.
 
Coach Martin is survived by three brothers, Foster, Lawrence, and Alfred; brother-in-law, Carl High; son, Phil and wife Susan; son, Steve; and son, John and wife Nancy; and grandsons, Matthew and Michael.
 
A Memorial Gathering will be held Friday, October 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Services, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. A Graveside Service and inurnment will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to The  American Cancer Society .

Teddie Jordan

Coach Martin was a class act.

He treated all of us with respect and that's what we gave him back.

Rest in peace coach.
