High school teacher found dead at home

By Angela Weatherford Staff Writer

Athens Police are investigating the death of an Athens High School art and English teacher who was found dead at her house Tuesday afternoon.

Foul play is not suspected, but the body of Melinda Henry, 61, was sent to Southwestern Medical Center for an autopsy. While preliminary results may be available in a few days, a full report could take several weeks or more.

According to a report from the Athens Police Department, Henry was found by her son, Byron, who hadn’t heard from her since Sunday.

Athens Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes said extra counselors were at Athens High School Wednesday morning in case they were needed to meet with faculty and students.

“(Assistant Principal) Margaret Johns and a counselor read a statement to the (Henry’s) students about what had happened,” he said. “The information came straight from the fire department.”

Henry was in her first year at Athens High School teaching art and English II.

Henry is the second Athens High School teacher to pass away in the last four months. In July, art teacher and cheerleader sponsor Kathy Thompson died suddenly.

The last time we saw Lindy was at classmate and cousin-in-law Sharon Smith Gouras' house up in Palestine back in the early ninties. Fran and I always thought a lot of Lindy, and Sharon just adored her. If I had to pick one word to describe Lindy it would be "sweet". If I had two it would be "sweet and kind".

Rest in peace sweet lady.
